Bluestocking Brides #1

Amelia and the Viscount

Rate this book
“No eligible bachelor wants to marry a bluestocking…especially not those frightful Chadwick girls.” – Lady Jersey, Almacks Patroness.

Amelia’s writing was often prone to getting her into trouble. Hence why she eventually took on a penname. But it seems, once again, her unthinking need to spill out everything onto paper will land her in hot water.

After her sisters persuade her the only way to get over her love for Lord Nicholas Wentworth is to write about him, Amelia devotes hours and hours of ink to the subject. However, she never expects for Nicholas to end up in possession of this information. How could she admit her affection for him when she knows full well he is still in love with her now married sister?

To save herself embarrassment—and more importantly to keep her penname hidden—Amelia must find a way to intercept these letters, and if she cannot, she must persuade Nicholas it was all some awful jest and that she is certainly not A. Hardwick—purveyor of stories so scandalous that it would mean utter ruination for all the Chadwick girls should the truth come out.

DNF. Thankfully I got this through Kindle Unlimited and didn't pay for it. It has such high ratings, and so I wanted to persevere, but I just couldn't. It was SO over-the-top.

I was excited because hello!!!!—the whole series is about bluestockings (my favorite kind of heroines). But almost from the beginning, I became quite weary, because the girls seemed quite immature. The back and forth between them was silly and light to the point of airheadedness, and that kind of continued. And it wasn't a "fun" quality-type light, like Julia Quinn, it was ... stupid.

What finally drove me over the edge was Nicholas. Nicholas, our valiant hero, has been pining for Amelia's sister, who recently got married. He's still pining for her a bit, thinking of her, etc. He runs into Amelia and one of her sisters, and all of a sudden, despite knowing them for all of their lives, randomly is like "Holy shit, how have I never noticed Amelia and why am I noticing her in a way that is kind of special and omg am I going to have feelings for her??".

Then a runaway horse makes them both go plunging into the river—he to save her sister (who gets out on her own) and Amelia to save him (because yeah, that's logical). And then this happens:
He drew back and met her gaze. That's when he saw it. That same spark. Amelia was not shaking from anything but cold. She had no fear in her. That same exhilaration fired through her veins. He could see it flash in those green eyes. It struck him hard in that moment. You feel the same as I do. You're like me.
Yeah, umm, what? And then he actually says out loud, "How did I not know?" ... Know what?! Wtf are you talking about buddy? Y'all just went for a swim. Now you're both cold. And you looked in her eyes for a hot second. Chill the fuck out. Although you're already chilling. Because you were in a fucking cold river. So maybe it went to your brain ...?

I know, I know, I'm being harsh. But it was too much; I tried continuing, got to halfway, and then I had to give up. Definitely not for me. Wish you better luck ...

(And another one, because I'm a secret RHONY fan)

' Amelia and the Viscount' by Samantha Holt. This starts the new series "Bluestocking Brides". This is the story of Nicholas and Amelia. This book is a Novella with almost 100 pages.
Amelia and her sisters are what the Town call Bluestocking and different. They are not popular at all. When their sister married a Scotsman that added to their notoriety. Amelia is a writer who has taken to writing about her love of Nicholas . Nicholas is in love with her sister Lavinia who is now married. When some of her letters accidentally get delivered to Nicholas's home, Amelia and her sisters set out to get them back. Nicholas is still sadden by the lost of Lavinia but his feelings start to change with he starts to know Amelia better Nicholas finds that Amelia is more like him then he every thought Lavinia was. Amelia has that 'spark' that Nicholas has and understands.
Loved this sweet story and hope to see more stories about the other sisters. They each had such a fun attitude!

The story is about 5 sisters. Four of them are singles, Amelia (The protagonist) who is the more serious and sensible of the sisters, Julia who is more devious, Catherine the delightful one, Emma the annoying one and Lavinia who is married and living somewhere else. Amelia is a secret writer who writes scandalous love stories. Amelia is in love with Nicholas, a viscount who used to love her sister Lavinia. Will the viscount love her too? You need to read to know that.

The story is short. The writing is OK. There is no much character development going on here due to the length of the book. The main protagonist is the only character which is a bit more detailed compared to the others. The story has nothing new to offer, it feels more generic like many other historical romances I have read in the past. This book is part of a series and each one will be telling the story of one of the girls. Hopefully, the next one will be better. The book suitable for a fast reading session, but don't expect anything spectacular. I give Amelia and the Viscount a 3.0 out of 5.0 stars.

Today I borrowed my sister's computer to use her Kindle to read a novella by a favorite author of us. When I saw this pretty cover from an author I've never heard about before in her Kindle, I decided to give it a try.

" The Chadwick girls were known to be unusual."

Amelia passion is writing.
Julia likes nature and animals
Catherine enjoy astronomy
Emma is presently obsessed with singing but always searching for her true calling
Lavinia is happily married

Amelia write scandalous books and romantic ones. She's not the only one considered scandalous in her family according to the ton, but it's one of the reason why she and the other girls have trouble finding suitors. But that's okay for the Chadwick's ladies because they don't care for the idea of marriage. But not Amelia. She has been in love with Nicholas, a friend of the Chadwick's sisters for quite a time now, but he only ever had eyes for her sister Lavinia. But when someone give him by mistake the love letters she had wrote to him that he was never supposed to read, Amelia and her sister Catherine have no other choice but to go to his estate to retrieve the missives before he read it.

I was not completely sold on Amelia and Nicholas's romance. His sudden change of mind and feelings was hard to believe, but I'm gonna read the second novella to see how it goes. And I thought Nicholas's relationship with his butler was pretty funny.

Sweet

This was short and charming. There was not much in character development and i wanted to learn more about Nicholas. Amelia's character was more fleshed out and she was just so lovely.

This last book I read of Samantha Holt was my last one, so I said. It used to be that all her heroines were beautiful, and that was good for me because I deal with ugly and fat women every day so I don’t want them to be in my reading material, (I know I'm showing, once again, how shallow I'am) but I decided to try another of her novellas again. And I will read about the other 3 sisters.

This was a really cute love story about Amelia who loved Nicholas, all the while convinced that he loved her married sister Lavinia. Amelia was also an author and Nicholas found a letter about Amelia’s characters and Nicholas realized that the writer, A. Hardwick, was Amelia and the letter was to him, written to him to make the characters in her book seem more realistic and then she would change the names in the books.

I could tell you what Nicholas’s house and garden and land looked like but I had no idea what Amelia or her sisters Julia, Emma and Catherine look like, except they all had red hair and, I think, green eyes. There was a little description of Nicholas but not enough. I don’t care about the paintings on his ceiling look like I want to know what the characters look like from head to toe. As cute as the story was there should have been more description of the players.

There was one fairly explicit sex scene in the gazebo, in the garden, during a ball, which I thought was a little tacky. Not a very romantic way to take the heroines virginity; tossing up her skirts while laying on a bench. But....

As to the narration: I know it was crazy again to spend $4.86 on less than 100 pages but I couldn’t stop myself because Stevie Zimmerman was narrating. She does such a fantastic job on the men’s and women’s voices and her emotions are awesome.

I'm on the fence here between a 3 and a 4 as I did enjoy the story overall - up until that proposal....
Who the hell... Ick.... no! Badly done, Nicholas!

I didn't mind the sisters silliness or their mother's snobbery or Nicholas' being kind of a dick to his butler, but that.... that kind of ruined the story for me. You can be adventurous without being sleazy, am I right?!

Anywho, aside from that, I did enjoy the story, especially that it was short! Might even read the next book about Julia and the Duke. I just hope the sisters mature a little bit. I didn't really think 'bluestocking' and 'silly' comes in the same description, but I suppose sisters will be sisters. And the ending was a sweet in a sisterly way, though I would have preferred the Epilogue to be their wedding night!

This was a sweet and short story. Amelia and her sisters are all a little too clever and forward thinking for the ton of way back when. To make matters worse Amelia writes books that are quite scandalous. She's only had love for one man. But he had eyes for her little sister until she married someone else. Now he chases a pen doing the paperwork for his estate. Occasionally he gets outside to chase thrills. He wants someone who can match his fire and desire for the thrill.
I liked this story. I loved the relationship between Amelia and her sisters. I felt like Nicholas was a tad fickle but hey, it all worked out in the end.

Nicely narrated by Stevie Zimmerman. This short story was the perfect easy listen for a Saturday afternoon.
I would have preferred a longer, more developed cast and storyline but I still very much enjoyed this cute story of Amelia and her Viscount. The characters were very likeable especially Nicholas who seemed to be very understanding and easy going despite his reputation of being wild. The sisters were charming and I am looking forward to reading more and finding what other mayhem they can embroil themselves in.

Amelia is smart, loyal and true to herself regardless of a mother who does encourage individuality. It was fun reading about her secret life as a scandalous writer under a pen name. Her idea to get over Lord Nicholas by writing him letters that were never meant to be mailed. But it was good that he came to his senses before it was too late. A quick fun read.

Cute story, but short and there was a lot of focus on Amelia's sisters and as not much on the romance or the h/H's character development. It was 'insta-love' for the hero. This was a fun book to read however and passed the time nicely. I will be reading the next book in the series. Also there were a few grammar errors that could have been picked up with another go-over by the publisher

Reviewed at Romantic Historicals

Amelia and the Viscount is a charming, rather delightful lighthearted romance between one young woman who has loved a man for far too long. And one man who is coming to realize that his idea of being in love doesn’t quite equal the reality of this woman.

Amelia’s sisters are quite a lively bunch, each a completely different personality. It will be enjoyable watching them each find matches that fit their personalities. Amelia is determined to get over being in love with Nicholas. It’s almost working, until it doesn’t. For getting over this man is far more than she can really imagine. And she has a good imagination, as shown in the books she writes involving the scandalous actions of the ton. Amelia and her sisters are seen as a bit odd by the ton, and it is a source of vast amusement that those ladies who look down their elegant noses at her family are the ones buying up her scandalous tales. Until her letters to Nicholas go missing. Those deeply personal letters that tell the man she loves of her feelings and their life together… well it would be their life as told through two characters. She needs to get those letters back, in any way possible.

Nickolas was certain he’d been in love with Amelia’s sister, Lavinia even though it had been a love from afar. She’d married a Scotsman before he could make a move and now he’s certain he will never love again. That is until he gets a chance to truly notice Amelia during an unguarded moment. To really see this red-haired, beauty who’d been right there living next door all the while he longed for her sister. Now Nicholas has to come up with his own plan… and Amelia’s letters offers the perfect solution.

Amelia and the Viscount was a fun romance. We meet all of the sisters in this first book, and while they are very close I’m hoping that future stories have a little more romance between the main couple instead of sisterly conversations and antics. I enjoyed them, but the romance got slightly overshadowed by them, in my opinion. I enjoyed my time in this world and would definitely recommend this story for any Historical Romance reader. I’ll be picking up the next story in this series.

I read this title through my Kindle Unlimited subscription.

Comical, endearing short read.
Publisher's Description:

“No eligible bachelor wants to marry a bluestocking…especially not those frightful Chadwick girls.” – Lady Jersey, Almacks Patroness.

Amelia’s writing was often prone to getting her into trouble. Hence why she eventually took on a penname. But it seems, once again, her unthinking need to spill out everything onto paper will land her in hot water.

Hardwick—purveyor of stories so scandalous that it would mean utter ruination for all the Chadwick girls should the truth come out.

My Thoughts:

I liked this story of friends to lovers. Amelia has loved Nicholas almost all her life. Nicholas, however thought himself in love with her sister, Lavina until she instead married a Scot.
He never even dreamed that Amelia was the woman for him.
Amelia is the anonymous author of stories that are considered scandalous by the ton. She has based those stories on her dreams of herself and Nicholas and has written letters as therapy to help with her stories and to also help her get over her infatuation with Nicholas.
Will these two unlikely lovers come together in the end or will he marry another?
I gave this novella a 4.25 of 5.0 star rating for storyline and character development and a sensual rating of 3.0 of 5.0 flames.
There are a couple of scenes with heated kisses and one rather hot sexual encounter which is quite a lot for this short read.
I read this book through the kindle unlimited program. This in no way affected my opinion of this book which I voluntarily reviewed.

I just love to read any books by Ms. Samantha Holt and when I noticed this new story with a beautiful cover I jumped at the chance to read it. Ms. Holt just knows how to tell a well crafted romantic sweet story no matter the length and some amazing characters you can’t help but love. Sure I wanted a longer story since the family and minor characters are so endearing plus I wanted more into their family life still there is more to come and another upcoming in the series.
Amelia is a Chadwick where most of the society loathes them and the whole family is unusual. Amelia also likes to write scandalous stories which tainted her good name even more. There is one more thing that Amelia and her sisters know of her secret love for Viscount Nicholas Wentworth. Unfortunately Nicholas has always had a thing for Amelia’s sister Lavinia. So Amelia pours her heart out to Nicholas in her writing by writing letters to him secretly as A. Hardwick something she never thinks will harm her since he will never know her true feelings until some of Amelia’s letters turn up missing.
When I first started reading about Amelia I couldn’t help but like her she was sensible, smart and practical. She loved her sisters even though they managed to get her in situations with Nicholas that was less than ideal. In fact I just loved them the nature loving Julia, the astronomer Catherine and Emma the want to be performer. I can’t wait to read more about their antics. I was unsure of liking Nicholas as an ideal hero especially since he harbored feelings for Amelia’s sister Lavinia and just never noticed her. I just wanted to shake him because how could he not know how Amelia felt. I think he did he just was too scared to admit to himself what he felt and maybe if there was more about their past relationship I would have connected better with him. I am glad he finally did see Amelia for who she truly was but most of the time I wanted to shake him. I just hope I can be patient enough to wait until the next book because I will definitely read it and I can recommend this for anyone that wants a short steamy regency read.

Ameila and The Viscount (Bluestocking Brides Book 1) by Samantha Holt is the first book in her Bluestocking Brides series. This is not my first time reading this author but this is my favorite of her books so far yet. She has created a fast, easy flowing story that will pull you in from the very beginning. Her characters are both connectable and lovable. They pulled my into their story with easy and I felt like they were friends then characters. This story really is about heartwarming, second chances and what you do with them when presented with it. This is the story of Ameila and Nicholas. Ameila is the oldest of three sisters and has been deemed the responsible one. But what everyone don't know is that there is another side to Ameila that she keeps hidden. She has a wild, hot, steamy romance side that she may not even be aware of. Nicholas is a man that seems to be wild to all who know him but there is another side to him that is so much more different. Ameila has always been in love with him but he was suppose to marry her sister but something went wrong and her sister married another. Ameila writes under a pen name which is how she reunites with Nicholas. What will happen when he gets his hands on her writing? Will she be able to hide her secret? Will they finally see what has been right in front of them all along? These two have such great chemistry together. They are just made for each other. I enjoyed that Ameila has a secret side to her, it spiced up the story some. They both are not what they really seem and that helps make the story more engaging. I have always enjoyed historical romances but this one tops the list and I highly recommend you read this story, I think you will find yourself hoping they just open up their eyes to find their happily ever after like I did.

I just finished reading Amelia and the Viscount (book 1 in the Bluestocking Brides series), by Samantha Holt.

This was such a refreshing read.
It was fun, it was sweet, it was absolutely delightful.

The Chadwick girls are girls after my own heart - carefree, fun, independent girls that I could see myself being friends with.

These redheaded wildlings are used to the glances the “Ton” casts their way but it doesn’t seem to bother them too much.

Although, as the oldest sister, Amelia sometimes worries for her sisters and what their futures might hold - she isn’t as concerned about her own future.

Her heart seems to cling to Nicholas Wentworth so she is willing to try anything to get over him - so she writes him letters. Letters that are meant to stay hers and hers alone.
She doesn’t want him to know how she feels, but she needs an outlet for her feelings.

But we can’t foresee all the details in our lives and neither could she.

In a surprising turn of events, some of her letters end up with Nicholas.

What a disaster! Amelia sets out with one of her trusted siblings and is desperately trying to think of a way to get them.

I don’t want to give anything away so I’ll leave it there.

Step into a world where women (and men) were meant to be prim and proper at all times and read about how these beautiful women refuse to dull their bright minds, to satisfy society and see for yourself the brave men that end up falling for these redheaded beauties!

The Chadwick sisters got a little nook of my heart and I’ll be sure to follow this series to see how the rest of them fare.

This was a 5 star book for me.

The Chadwick sisters are an unconventional bunch, a group of girls more interested in their various hobbies than men. Amelia Chadwick is the oldest of her five sisters, and finds her happiness writing salacious stories under a pen name. Amelia writes to move past her love for Lord Nicholas Wentworth, who happens to be in love with her married sister Lavinia. Amelia knows that Nicholas could never see her in a romantic way. After all, she's a red-haired bluestocking, the exact opposite of her elegant younger sister Lavinia.

Amelia writes Nicholas several letters declaring her love for him in an effort to move on.
When the packet of letters is accidentally mailed to Nicholas, she and her sisters have to find a way to intercept them.

This was a charming little historical romance, it was both funny and sweet. The plot moves along quickly with a lot of witty dialogue. Nicholas and Amelia shared some sweet moments and plenty of heat. I loved the sisters and their relationship, it's going to be interesting to see them each meet up with their perfect match. A novella with plenty of personality, it's perfect for an afternoon read!

Stevie Zimmerman's narration was excellent as always, she brought the story to life. She performed distinct voices for the characters and had the perfect voice for Nicholas. I requested a copy of the audiobook, and I'm voluntarily leaving a review.

Ameila and the Viscount (Bluestocking Brides Book 1 ) by Samantha Holt

Ameila and the Viscount  (Bluestocking Brides Book 1 ) by Samantha Holt is the first book in her Bluestocking Brides series. I absolutely loved this book, this is my first by this author and it definitely won't be my last.I was drawn in from the beginning and couldn't put it down till the end. This is an amazing story about second chances and what one may do when offered it.This is the story of Ameila and Nicholas.Ameila is the oldest out of three sister's and  has been deemed to be the responsible one.Ameila has a secret side to her no one else knows about. She has a hot and steamy wild side  that she's not even aware of .Nicholas  seems to be the wild one to all who knows him,but even he has another side to him that much much different. Ameila is in love with him but he was supposed to marry her sister, but something happened and she married someone else. She writes under a different name this is how she is reunited  with Nicholas .Can she keep her secret hidden? What happens when Nicholas gets his hands on her writing? Can these two finally see what's been right in front of their eyes ?The chemistry between these two are  crazy, they obviously belong together. I have always had a soft spot for Historic romance and this one is definitely on the top of my list for favorites.I most definitely recommend this book. I can't wait to read more from this author.

It started out as promising...but ended up meh.
I like the initial premise: an unrequited love and secret love letters.
Of course, as historical romance, this book has tons of inaccuracies - like things that I think should not be done in that era - but somehow I managed to keep on reading, even while realizing that (I admit that the fact that it is a short novel helps a lot. If this were a full-length novel I might DNF this). The author is quite good in describing the family situation and how the sisters interact. I also like that the writer takes time to describe the hero's attraction towards the heroine - a bit too sudden, but still explainable - and how the attraction developed.

However, what made me gave 2 stars to this book is the plot. I mean, this book could pass as ordinary, warm-hearted love story had it not been for the silly "late night sneaking" into hero's house. I feel like it was being done halfheartedly. Either you write a bizarre machination as a plot or you write that ordinary love story where hero and heroine learn about each other. Pick one. I even skipped the part where hero and heroine made love.

That being said, I would still read the next installment of this series.

Amelia and the Viscount by Samantha Holt is a perfect 5 star period novel! The whole time I was reading I felt like it was Pride and Prejudice all over again, save for some distinguishing differences, and a steamy scene or two.

Amelia is a writer, and for her time she has to use a pen name as to not bring any unwanted attention to her family. The town she lives in already thinks her and all her sisters are silly. Her passion is writing, and was Nicholas. Nick had recently gotten together with one of her sisters and little does her family know, her sister ran off with a Scotsman. Amelia sees Nick again for the first time in six months and realizes she still loves him, but also realizes he is with her sister and will never see her in any other way.

When Nick sees Amelia again for the first time in months he notices her, and I mean like he has never noticed her before. He gets her alone and they share a kiss, and he ends up reading one of her writings, when he discovers she is the writer, he will stop at nothing to make Amelia his forever.
The story is perfect, and the book has a great ratio of story to romance to drama. I loved everything about this book, and definitely can’t wait to read the story of the other sisters.
