On October 12, 2007, a young soldier is injured in Afghanistan. For the next two years, as he is moved from Bagram to Germany to Walter Reed to Palo Alto and finally home to Washington State, his family never leaves his side. And throughout those years, his father writes daily emails to family and friends, chronicling the journey from a dusty road in Afghanistan to the snowy summit of Mt. Rainier.

I chose this book for a book report in my cognitive linguistic disorders class (studying to be a speech therapist). I learned more from this book about TBI and the recovery process than I would have just reading my textbooks. The author was very detailed about his son's recovery from a severe traumatic brain injury, and I spent the entire book rooting for their family and hoping that one day "Little" David would join his father in climbing Mt. Rainier. I definitely recommend especially since proceeds from buying the book go to a community center for soldiers. Thanks so David and all of the military service men and women and their families for everything they've given up for this country.

Such a private insight

I really appreciate the fact that David's recovery has been made available, I could never have realised the practical steps of getting a severely wounded soldier back home and into recovery, he is so loved and his Dad's heartbreak, hope, frustrations but ultimate belief in 100% recovery shine through.

Inspirational reading of a family's unconditional love for their son who was seriously wounded in Afghanistan and sent by medivac back to the USA. The story is not about the rights or wrongs of war, but is a collection of almost daily emails. These were sent to family and friends, to keep them updated on son David's health and long-term recovery. At times, the author adds additional notes to clarify some situations but the notes are minimal and take nothing away from the medical and therapy facts, or the emotional toll being experienced by David's father (along with his wife and daughter-in-law - David's wife), as they battle to ensure that David receives the appropriate therapy to ensure he is able to recover from a profoundly serious head trauma. The author was adamant that he was not prepared to settle for his son just being comfortable and stabilised, but required the appropriate care and therapy to bring his son back to the adult he knew, before leaving for Afghanistan. A highly recommended read.

This book is a wonderful story of recovery, although I found it somewhat depressing at parts, told through the point of view of only emails. It was very factual about the whole recovery process for people who had suffered from brain injuries, while still having plenty of emotion that always comes with life-changing events told by a wonderful author. I was very moved by the father's devotion to climbing the mountain in honor of his son. I think that this book would be a wonderful read for fathers and brain injury patients and pretty much anyone who can get their hands on it!

Bravo to the author who with his determination and love helped his Wounded Warrior son through a long and labored recovery. Please read this book to learn what happens when our troops come home. Many of these men and women who sacrifice their lives come home and are sick, wounded and need much help and care and love.

David, I hope you have or will someday make it up that mountain with your father. You have another fan and I will continue to watch your progress, God bless you. I received this book from a Goodreads First Reads fee giveaway.
