Feisty and no-nonsense, Ava is a powerful, successful woman. If only she wasn't also horribly single and alone. Spending most of her nights with her head buried in a good romance, Ava didn't know what to think when she first met the tall, handsome tattoo artist named after a Norse God. She was too busy looking for things to hit him with. But a chance encounter like no other breeds a passion that she has never experienced before. Will Ava be brave enough to look past what she thinks is best for her? Will she realize the man of her dreams is the same man that destroyed her perfect pair of Manolo Blahniks and irritates her to no end with his stunning perfection? Find out if these two flawed individuals can be perfect together in Ava's Thor(n)!
This book started off with a rant (I agreed) about descriptions of black women in romantic fiction and it had me hooked. But it's really a story about enemies to friends with benefits (fwb) with absolutely no commitment desired and the very involved (in their business) friends of Thor and Ava.
Thor and Ava meet (and it's not cute) when he accidentally knocks her coffee out of her hands and refuses to apologize or offer to buy her a replacement. Outside of the coffee shop, the situation escalates further -- they eventually part ways, but will meet again soon enough.
Ava's friend Evie is an (almost) reformed one night stander until she (unknowingly) meets Thor's friend Axel in a restaurant and they hit it off. All four reconnect (with explosive results) and later on Axel invites the ladies to his BBQ where Evie was going to have sex (he said no) with Axel!
Evie started to annoy me when she convinces Ava to step outside her comfort zone by attending an outdoor music festival and they get separated and Ava is nearly trampled to death. Out of nowhere comes Thor (still enemies at this point) to save Ava. Minutes later, Evie walks off with the Axel and leaves Ava to her own devices! What? Really? Was this adventure truly about helping her friend or hooking up with a hot guy?
Now that Axel is interested (and vice versa) in her, Evie turns into a judgmental crusader (and continually says many hurtful things) about the FWB relationship that Ava is having with Thor. So much so that Evie takes it upon herself -- after already having a conversation with Ava -- to talk to Thor! Ava and Thor are understandably upset with the judgment and unsolicited advice on how they choose to navigate their (relationship) status. Though, I never felt enough of a shift from their FWB status to them wanting an actual relationship.
Ava is 28, old enough to know what she wants and how she wants to live her life but her best friend Evie thought otherwise. Proving -- sometimes, you have to keep some relationship matters to yourself, because the friends of Thor and Ava were much too involved in their lives and in this story.
Too much internal dialogue, too much telling, too much repetition, too many grammatical errors and typos, too much tame and vanilla sex, and way too little story.
This book also reads like the author heavily researched IRR forums and took note of what Black women complain about and seemingly want. That, plus the misplaced and awkward colloquialisms, made this book seem inauthentic.
I want a real story from a real author who's bringing something new, original, raw, and courageous to the game...not this recycled, pacifying popcorn triteness.
I'd never read anything from R.J Fletcher, but it's like she read my mind. I bought the book based on this passage alone:
"My eyes honed in on those keywords I always dreaded and had been haunting me with every new book I seemed to get my hands on. Curly straight hair. Green eyes or some other light-colored bullshit. Milk-and-coffee skin. What the hell does that even mean? Oh, and let’s not forget: small button nose and the model figure. I’m so overwhelmed by the need to gag I just shut down my tablet.
The colorism in romance, especially in my beloved IR genre, has been a total turn off and I've gone from avid reader one-clicking my way to a huge TBR stack to 'let me go on Amazon and read the sample first'. Some authors have probably figured this out (lol) so they don't include the heroine's description until much later in the book, or it's so oblique that I'm not sure what the heroine looks like. That's fine, I'm very good at DNF'ing the fail. I'm also very good at blowing off most IR and reading more comics featuring dark-skinned heroines who actually DO things.
I've made the case before - IR is our genre. Black women write it, read it, review it, support it with time and money. Hell, we have our own awards and gatherings. We defend it from the white supremacist publishing industry that sees little to no value in making Black women the objects of love, desire and happy endings. We even put up with substandard stories because we're so thirsty to see ourselves reflected. Yet, some authors seem dead set on perpetuating the very colorist nonsense that we deal with in real life. For a lot of books, no way can a dark-skinned woman ever find her HEA, or if she does, she's so damaged and downtrodden, that by the end it's almost a mercy HEA rather than one as a reader, I'm invested in.
So that passage spoke to me in a way that I haven't been in a long time. I have been Ava more times than I care to count and it's maddening to say the least. And while white authors may have the excuse of not knowing, Black authors can't say that. They know colorism is real and if every character (or a significant portion of them) look more like Zoe Saldana or Zoe Kravitz rather than Lupita Nyong'o or Danai Gurira, that's a problem they need to seriously examine. And DO something about.
***
So, that passage made me download the book right then and there, even though I was way over my book budget for the month, but it was both Ava and Thor who kept me up all night reading. Talk about oil and water - it was a miracle they even had sex, since they seemed to get on the other's nerves. Yet, this seeming antagonism is why they actually worked as a couple. My rule of thumb is that every alpha male needs an alpha female to compliment his strengths. They balance each other out, and frankly makes for explosive reading when two strong-willed people are willing to give a little. Your mileage may vary, but a doormat heroine is boring as hell. In the paranormal genre, she deserves to be red meat for whatever beasties are out there.
My rules for alpha heroes are that they are protector, lover and they respect the heroine. They don't belittle, they don't demean, they don't bully. They are not afraid of a strong woman. They don't slut shame. In my view, 80% of so-called 'alpha heroes' written today violate my rules and why I have no time for their asshatery.
I loved how this novel broke down that fourth wall, that I was able to get inside Ava and Thorn's convoluted heads. I loved their brand of crazy, how as much as they butted heads and tried to keep things purely sexual, they both knew it was a losing game.
There were times I wanted to shake Ava, especially her "Black folks don't do" lame excuse, which in the hands of a less skilled author would come off as playing into stereotypes, but here was Ava's flippant way of disguising her fear of stepping outside of her comfort zone. Though she's no nonsense and has a pretty good sense of herself, she's also complex. A bit insecure.
There were times I wanted to kick Thor in his family jewels, but my girl Ava knew how to put him in check when necessary. Thor, as much a man-whore as he was, at least had the decency to not be a chest beating troglodyte. Yes, his hit em and quit em was a defense mechanism from his past, but I never saw him as being proud of his conquests. In fact, the opening scene of him and some other female was almost comical (okay, I have an odd sense of humor). It was like he was trying to convince himself) and the reader) that hey, he's perfectly happy.
Then there's Evie and Axel. I'm so ready for their HEA. It's always great to read about positive Black female friendships. These two are truly ride or die, even when they step on each other's toes, such as Evie getting into Thor's face. A true friend will tell you that your slip is showing, but they'll also help you hide the body.
Oh and, if the sex got any hotter between Ava and Thor, my Kindle might have gone up in flames. I love a dirty talking hero, the nastier the better. Especially when the heroine is down with it and gets off on it too. And Thor loved Ava's curves, which is always cool to read.
My only problem with this book was that it was just too damn short!!! I want more Ava and Thor. I just have a thing for cute and messy and alpha couples.
Please READ, READ!!! Ava is strong, sexy, real, and well accomplished! Thor is strong, sexy, real, and well accomplished! I love their angsty sexual chemistry and the 🔥 they have when interacting. To the author: Thanks for bringing in some racial factors, immigrant issues, socio-economic biases people have. So enjoyed this book....read from start to finish in one sitting. 💋
My first read by this author but definitely not my last!!
I was hooked from the opening scene where Ava is lamenting the fact that there's lack of diversity in romance heroines; no one looks like her, short, curvy and natural self.
Thor and Ava are my new favorite couple. Their explosive, passionate reaction to each other never lets up!
Hot sex, great dialogue and real, likeable (even in their catty moments) people.
Ava was definitely a down to earth sister. She had many hang ups due to prior relationship issues but she is really trying to change her ways. Thor was trying to not get his feelings hurt again and I totally understood where he was coming from. Sometimes you can not run from what is meant to be. Their relationship was exactly that
Firstly, I really appreciated when i began reading this book that the author was able to target black women like myself who are shades darker than caramel and hair tougher than the average long straight hair as well as the kinky hair which majority of other authors feature in their book. However, this book is about two people who met in one of the most unconventional way. What started out as hatred for each other soon turned into a friends with benefits relationship then into a love affair. The funniest part of the book for me were the arguments between Ava & Thor. As usual, we often argue with the ones we have strong feelings for. All in all i really enjoyed reading this book and i hope to see a book about Evie and Axel's story
Great story with very relatable characters! It was realistic and honest and I throughly enjoyed it. I had to get past that first bit in the prologue because I found myself not liking the male lead and his inner commentary. But once the story started I got into it. One little quip I have is the way the main female character sort of announced herself it just felt wrong and I think it could have been reworked or edited so that she describes herself so the reader gets that she's not the "typical" female lead in a story such as this. I hope that makes sense. But besides those tiny little things in the very first pages and a few grammar and editing issues the rest of the book was phenomenal.
Ava is does not start of being your favourite heroine but I promise you she will grow on you. Thor is well, gimme a minute. Sexy, damaged, edgy and sweet. The shouldn't work but ...
Put them together, and you get an unconventional story love. That's honest, funny and a lil raw. You won't be able to put it down until you are pouting that's it's over so soon.
Ps. Love seeing old friends again warms the heart S&D forever.
Ava's Thor(n)...I liked this but not as much as others. The writing was solid, some minor editing mistakes, but one of the more well-written IR novels which is always an added plus and bonus. The characters sounded like real people, and I almost finished this in one day before having to stop to give my eyes a rest.
So why only three stars? Good question.
There were moments where I wanted Ava to go in on Thor when he said something particularly vile and nasty, but in between she would be distracted with his overbearingly sexy looks. Ava and Thor had repeatedly and constantly talked about one another's aesthetics that I was like, I get it, y'all can't look at each other without wanting to bone. Let's focus here. It honestly took some of the depth out of the story for me. And Thor, I feel he didn't work hard enough to get back into Ava's good graces. I would have liked to see more of him striving to get to know her as a person while also opening up. He did eventually, but that wasn't until like the 88% mark of the book.
What I did like:
Ava had her insecurities she had to overcome and it was a nice change of pace the author took to show her personal growth, the avenues Ava was pushed into opened her up to different experiences. I like that she didn't automatically become a changed, confident woman because Thor laid good pipe.
I have mixed feelings about Thor. I didn't dislike him but I can't say I really cared about him overcoming old hurt from a previous relationship. I just wanted him to stop thinking with his dick 90% of the time. He had a moment of depth but it happened so quickly it read as superficial to me. Maybe if the story had been a bit longer with less sex, we could have gotten to know more about him and Ava, but I understand the story was about two people butting heads, being combative, giving as good you get, while succumbing to sexual attraction and fighting feelings though knowing you're gonna lose.
The ending was perfect for Ava and Thor and really brought things full circle.
"But it seemed like my excitement all came crashing down on the first page. My eyes honed in on those keywords I always dreaded and had been haunting me with every new book I seemed to get my hands on. Curly straight hair. Green eyes or some other light-colored bullshit. Milk-and-coffee skin. What the hell does that even mean? Oh, and let’s not forget: small button nose and the model figure. I’m so overwhelmed by the need to gag I just shut down my tablet. Another one bites the dust."
At this moment did this book become my best friend. It didn't stop there.
Excerpt
"There are authors out there that refuse to write about women darker than a paper bag. Do you get the reference? Or with hair curlier than 3C. Hello, where my 4B and 4C sistas at?
I’m an unapologetically Black woman,..."
honestly. i loved colorism and black woman issues she addressed in the book she did it beautifully. especially in an interracial book like this. she picked up on all the right cues in interracial dating from a black woman who doesn't discard race but accepts the differences and also still doesn't accept cultural appropriation just bc they are dating. I particularly liked bc even though I like IR anything and everything wasn't acceptable, like she got the cringe feeling we get if a white person tries to hard to be down.Another thing I loved was even though she first propositioned him with the enemies with benefits thing, she allowed him to come begging back after things changed. That spoke volumes to me because she wasn't going to continue to string herself along to a piece of man. This character really resonated with me because I feel we are similar, both hard edged to keep the bad people out but loving to those close. She addresses that she may need a change this forced me to do some self reflection. Overall great book.
wish it was longer too.

I gave this book five stars not because it was a spectacularly great read. It was a good book. This book got 5 stars bc sometimes you just need to read a HEA with a female lead that's not racially ambiguous and still gets the guy. Sometimes you need to see that author's get it and can write about a different type of woman. A different kind of beauty. I loved Ava and Thor. I loved how 2 people, most would consider polar opposites, and never in a trillion yrs being together, become a couple. I loved Ava's crazy and Thors extremely high self-esteem. This was a wonderful break from the monotony that bwwm books have become. However, I can say I have read most of this author's books and I love how the characters are paired. I love their flaws. I love how things are stripped down and at the end of it all the reader realizes that we all have more similarities than differences and that love, when given a chance, transcends color. And happiness is where you find it. Not defined by societal norms and doesn't come in color coded and religious coded boxes. To the author, continue doing what you're doing. We all need to remember, especially now, that we are more than the color of our skin and the sum of our parts. And at the end of the day we are all people who want to love and be loved and accepted for who we are and not what we look like, sound like, or pray like. I know this review doesn't tell you much about this book. However, I hope the stars given is enough said. Like I said, sometimes you just need a HEA.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book. Both protagonists Thor and Ava were damaged characters and found it hard to even contemplate a relationship. Ava is the stereotypical black woman: too much sass and feistiness, loves her food (Amen to that) and secretly consumes romances waiting for her Prince Charming to enter her life though making little effort to go out and find him herself. (Come on this is the 21st century - not the Medieval era!) But I can understand that... after a hard day's work who wants to go seek a man? However, her bravado hides a genuine person terrified to fall in love. She has a heart of gold and a vulnerability which captures our hearts. Thor is similarly damaged: He has little respect for women and even less for himself which will unfold in the novel. He is drop dead gorgeous yet carries around an arrogant grin as if that is the answer to all women want. Although the story line is somewhat formulaic, we are intrigued how these two very unlikely characters are going to get along in the romantic sense especially after their first and second horrendous meeting!! I am pleased that R.J. Fletcher kept the characters true to themselves yet together they are a force to be reckoned with. A great read Ms Fletcher as are all your books. I would thoroughly recommend this book as well as all the others.
This book was a pleasant Saturday afternoon read. The first thing that attracted me to the book was the clever title. I love a cheeky title that doesn't give away the entire plot without even having to read a synopsis. Also while cover art does not make the story more interesting, it definitely adds to the appeal.
Ava's Thorn is the story of two strong willed, jaded people who have what could be considered a not so pleasant "meet cute." Every encounter with these two was rife with sexual tension and explosive chemistry.
There's no need to provide the overview as the gist of the book is listed in the details. I will say that the characters were well written and there were moments of comic relief. I was not overwhelmed with so many typos that it distracted from the story, nor did I find myself skipping pages due to writing that did not flow.
There weren't many drawbacks with this story other than the fact that I wish it was longer. A part of me was hoping that there would be another foil in the story like another man vying for Ava's interest, but I guess that was touched upon in the chapter revolving around "girls'night"...
This is my first read from this author and I will say that I'm impressed.
This was a good story that was blown by the unlikable, obnoxious, immature, over the top behavior of both characters, especially the h. I did not like the h character. I wonder why the author felt like they had to go there? Lots of unnecessary shouting, over the top dialog and childish conversations/interactions. In addition, not enough background as to why the h behaved the way she did. One explanation was an ex; however, she must not have learned too much from that relationship; she was all set to repeat it again. Again a good story, except the characters behaved like characters in the Jerry Springer show. Such a waste; however, if a reader enjoys or appreciate the behavior of the characters on that show, then this would be a 5 star read, lol.
The author has provided a free copy of her work in exchange for an honest review.
This is my review and how I see it. Author R.J. Flecther's story Ava's Thor(n) an interactive read, at some point in this story the characters are speaking to you the reader. I loved it! This is a book about a couple who have been hurt in the past and are not looking for love but find it unexpectedly.
The interaction between Ava and Thor(n) is hilarious from the start. He does become a thorn in her side at first meeting and her for him.
Two people who could not be more attracted to each other found themselves initially for him (denying the attraction) and for her (fighting the attraction).
This is actually my second time reading this book and I love it just as much. When I first read I felt a connection to Ava in a sense that are personalities were very similar. The second time around her character really resonated with me because of a recent failed relationship. I loved how Ava’s appearance was similar to mine. I mean we are different cause I am taller but emotionally speaking like her I am not someone who can do one night stands or fuck buddies.
I do wish that we could learn more about how they both settled into the relationship. I would love to see another book about where there relationship is now and how they are working through the problems that they each had. All in all R.J. Fletcher did an amazing job.
This story brings heat and drama with a wild alpha male and intelligent and defiant woman....intense chemistry and passion. I thourghly enjoyed the build up of the romance and how the story flowed easily, quite compelling.
The author's wit and charm comes through effortlessly, I could identify with each character and felt as if I was actually there.
I have absolutely no hesitation what so ever in reccomending this novel. A MUST read. Thanks again RJF 😁
I just loved every moment of this story it was like getting a modern lover affair that in reality was an old-fashioned romance. The two main characters are not only to characters that you could cheer for but they are a couple that you want to see how the whole relationship plays. The writer paints a wonderful picture of two people afraid to let their frauds down. Overall this was such a wonderful way to spend a day.
I wasn't going to leave a review since there were many already but I really enjoyed the story and the characters. Ava was no nonsense, petite and feisty, and professional. Thor is a commitment-phobe, large, tattooed businesses owner. Interesting mix that plays into the storyline.
I got this a a read for free with Amazon Prime; sometimes the Prime books are not the greatest reads but this surprised me.
This book deserves a great rating. I'm just sorry that I can't do it justice. I loved the angst between these two from their first angry meeting to all the other meetings before they finally gave in to how much they wanted each other. They tried the sex buddies and it was destined not to work. Watching them finally comes together was great. I could not put it down until the end and even then wanted more!
This is my first time reading a book from this author. And because of the humour the character development also being my favorite genre. I did love this one. This story has a different feel but nonetheless very good. I'll certainly be following this author again.
Ava is one short firecracker that even shocks Thor into submission. She told him off for spilling her coffee fix and he ruined her shoes. You have to enjoy their banter throughout the story. But Thor past does sneaks up on him but Miss Ava puts Miss Katherine in her place. I highly recommend this read. I enjoyed all of it.
OMG!! This was the qurikest, sweetest love story! It did start off a lil disjointed but quickly picked up a nice flow. There were several lol moments and I loved how both Thor and Ava's relationship and their self growth progressed.
I finally found a great story to read! The characters were well developed and the storyline was great up to the end. I loved the humor and especially the upbeat rhythm of the story. Awesome story...Finally a good one!
I was impressed that this story actually stood up to the reviews. I usually read reviews sceptically but I'm happy to say the reviews were correct. I loved the characters and the way they were written.
I love books that take you on a journey and this book definitely delivers. Even when I wanted to reach through the book and chock some people. It is entertaining and indicative of what people face while in relationships. 5 stars well earned.
Some parts left a few unanswered questions. What happened to the female tattoo artist? What happened with the best friends relationship? And did Ava ever go to Thor's parents house? These are just a few that should have been answered
Really enjoyed Eva and Thor's story!! It's engaging, funny and heartfelt. The supporting characters were great too. I hope there's more from all of these characters!!
