Haunted Hearts Legacy #2

The Hummingbird Heart

Rate this book
Shortly after escaping a circus tragedy, young Italian orphan, Willow Antoniette, seeks refuge at The Manor of Diversions—a holiday resort in England born of a ghost story. For eleven years, she’s raised alongside the children of the resort’s owners: Julian, his twin brother, Nick, and their younger sister Emilia. Now that Willow is of marriable age, she's determined to escape finishing school along with everyone's efforts to make her a proper lady. The only man she wants to spend her life with is Julian, after all. Yet how can she tell him, when he thinks of her as nothing but a friend?

As a machinist and engineer, Julian Thornton prefers a governable life. He can't allow his ever-deepening attraction for Willow to distract from his amusement park plans to lure a younger, wealthier clientele to their family's resort. In hopes to escape Willow and find investors, Julian sets off on a transatlantic ocean liner headed for the St. Louis World’s Fair, unaware Willow has secretly stowed away on the same ship.

A tiny, mute orphan named Newton and a pair of haunted Italian shoes bring Willow and Julian face to face on deck. Forced to work together to solve the mystery of Newton and his vindictive, ghostly companion, Julian and Willow can no longer fight their untapped passions. However, time to admit their true feelings is running out, for the ghost and her murderer have enlisted them as unsuspecting pawns in a karmic game of cat-and-mouse that could cost all of them their lives.

Today I posted the official book description for readers of The Architect of Song who are curious about the second in the series. The three follow up books are set within roughly twenty years of the same time era (1883 & 1904+), and each story connects to the others through family members that are in some way haunted by a ghostly element. Oh, and in case anyone's wondering, there's no love triangle in this one! I'll be revealing the cover in either January or February 2017.

Also, for a fun sneak peek, here's a picture of the haunted 18th century Italian latchet shoes that play a role in this particular story:

A heads up that this book is a little steamier than book 1 (the two POV characters are at the cusp of adulthood and already know one another having grown up together, so there's more sensual discovery involved), but it's not graphic. Like book 1, any love scenes are written with a literary slant, leaving most things to the imagination. And no worries: there are family dynamics, ghostly mysteries, travels, and secondary characters aplenty, so it's not all about the romance! ;)

I read this last year, but I can still remember how much I loved it.

Julian and Willow are both great characters and I really enjoyed their interactions. They have chemistry right from the start and I was basically waiting for them to kiss because the UST is palpable. And of course seeing Juliet and Lord Thornton was delightful.

Plot wise, it's deliciously creepy + they're on a boat for a good portion of the book and for me, that made it a bit more tension filled. I mean, you can't really escape... The sort of quiet anticipation really made the ending satisfying and I don't have words for the last chapter. I can't even wait to see what the next book in the series brings.

**Huge thanks to Anita for spoiling me rotten and sending me a beta copy to read**

5 Stars!!!!!

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! I am drowning in all the feels right now. The Architect of Song was absolutely ah-mazing, and I wasn't sure if The Hummingbird Heart would be able to fulfill my crazy high expectations (I was expecting so much from this book!) and THIS BOOK DELIVERED. If you just want an answer to the question "Should I read this book?" then I can say, without a shadow of a doubt, resoundingly Y-E-S! Even if you haven't read The Architect of Song (which I also strongly recommend) then you can read The Hummingbird Heart as a standalone, because it is just that good.

Now that I've recovered my feels and can process what happened, I'm going to keep this review generally short and vague, so everyone can enjoy this book in full splendour. Alright *cracks fingers*

I won't deny that I was a little apprehensive about diving into a book focusing on another set of characters (I adore Juliet, Chaine and Hawk, so how could anyone else compare?). In the past, this hasn't always worked, and I've ended up feeling disconnected and disappointed. The Hummingbird Heart doesn't try to replace the original cast (who obviously pop in for awesome times) but instead makes the reader fall in love with an entirely new cast of characters - I couldn't help but adore Julian, Willow, Newt and the new gang, because they were just so complex, engaging and amazing to read that I fell under their spell almost instantly. I won't say more, because spoilers, but their struggles, journeys, development and everything in between was a joy to read!

The plot was incredible! I flicked through the pages so quickly I forcefully made myself slow down so this book wouldn't end so quickly (and the wait for book 3 started *sobs*). If you liked The Architect of Song then The Hummingbird Heart is right up that path, haunting gothic vibes, emotional turmoil, a mystery and then reveals, reveals, reveals at the end.

Once again, I'm taking a moment to applaud Anita's stunning prose - she has a gift and practically every sentence is quotable. Really, her writing is enthralling and it just pulls you into the story mercilessly and doesn't let go until you've turned the last page. I always have such an amazing reading experience with her books - so evocative and emotional! (I love anything gothic/sublime, so this is like my cat nip).

Was that review short? I'm not sure, but containing my feels for this book/series is difficult, so forgive me. I'm not sure what else to say - The Hummingbird Heart was wonderful, and if you haven't got the message - read this book!!! I'm already excited for The Glass Butterfly and can't wait to find out what the inanimate object will be in the next book!

*Thank-you so much to the author, A.G. Howard, for providing me with an ARC of this book. I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review*

An advance copy of this title was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review. My thoughts are my own. This review can also be found at The Starry-Eyed Revue.

This novel was, simply put, gorgeous. I loved Howard's Splintered series, but there's no doubt in my mind that I love this series best. I think it's just how sensual and mysterious each ghost story is -- or has been thus far -- coupled with the historical setting. I can't get enough of her atmospheric words.

Howard's characters are always so multi-faceted, and Willow and Julian are no exception. By all appearances, Willow is a tough, no-guts-no-glory kind of tomboy, but as the story progresses, you get to see her more vulnerable side, the one she doesn't want anyone to see. And Julian is the straight-laced, analytical type, but he comes out of his shell more than a little throughout the story. But when they come together...they are completely different people with each other. Their chemistry would blow up a lab if left unchecked. But they are also very caring, attentive, loyal and protective with each other, and I loved reading as they learned how to love each other together.

But it's not just the main characters I found so appealing because Anita's characters all have these layers and dimensions to them that you discover as you're reading. I love how the author weaves such diverse characters and situations and how seamlessly she does so. She doesn't just mention them and then brush them aside; that diversity is essential to the story. These characters facing adversity and trying to right the wrongs of the past gives me life. Howard doesn't gloss over Newt's muteness or the rumors of a fellow passenger being part of the Italian mafia simply because he is rich and has a harem of gorgeous women in his entourage. It was the same in the last book and I am on board for more of this.

My only real complaint with The Architect of Song, the previous book in this series, was that I wanted more from the ending. And I got that with this sequel. More from the previous couple AND more from the featured couple and their story, and it was everything I'd hoped for them. I adore how these stories are already connected and what that might mean for future books in this series, and I can't wait to read more!

GIF it to me straight:

Beautiful and emotional character driven story that, like the first book, totally captivated me from start to finish. It was less intense than the first one but just as engaging in its own way. There is no love-triangle in this one (yay) and the romance is adorable! 💗

You’ll love the characters and the wonderful atmosphere of the story. Totally recommended and I cannot wait for the next book!

“I … love you. From the first moment I saw you adjust the pistons and cylinders on a compressed air engine, I was yours. Now I can’t remember a time when I didn’t belong to you. And … and even should you not return my feelings … well, that will never change. Not for the rest of my life.”

***Note: I received an ecopy of this book early via the author in exchange for an honest review.***

I have loved AG Howard's writing and stories since Splintered hit the shelves and I was thrust into Wonderland with Alyssa, Morpheus, and Jeb. This series holds up to what I have come to expect when reading one of her books.

The Hummingbird Heart tells a beautiful story of young love, self-discovery, the power of forgiveness, and adventure. I enjoyed watching Julian and Willow's relationship grow from the beginning. Their interactions and ability to read one another shows just how close they were before they developed deeper feelings for one another. I loved how their feelings jumped off the page at me. I kept having to remind myself that it was all new to them, because I kept yelling at them to just communicate and some confusion would be alleviated! I'll admit, I also called Julian an idiot occasionally, for being so insecure about his inexperience. :) I enjoyed seeing the story unfold and there were definitely some twists that I didn't see coming but that fit perfectly, despite the surprises.

While the characters so easily became part of my family in my mind, the writing is what keeps me coming back for more. Her descriptions, the emotion that seeps from the pages, and just the words she puts together makes me never want to stop reading. There were some places I marked that were great quotes, gorgeous sentences, or, in some cases, hilarious because they sounded so real (between all the young adults, there were some definite lines I laughed out loud at!).

I can't wait for this gorgeous cover to grace my shelf next to The Architect of Song. :)

I'm looking forward to the next installment in this series. I am invested in this family and I want to know more about them and future generations!

The Hummingbird Heart was such an adventure! As much as I enjoyed the first book (The Architect of Song) I loved this one even more. The story simply had it all; romance, mystery, ghosts and a lot of swoony moments between the two lead characters.

The story is set nineteen years after The Architect of Song and features one of Nicholas and Juliet's sons, Julian, as one of the main characters along with Willow who's been living at The Manor of Diversions ans raised alongside Julian, his twin brother Nick and their younger sister Emilia.

At one point Julian ends up going to the St. Louis World's Fair on a transatlantic ocean liner. But what he doesn't know is that Willow, the woman he has been having feelings for has secretly come aboard as well.

I loved both characters, especially Julian because he wasn't the any usual heroes in books that I've read about. I loved that he's an engineer and that he designs amusement rides. Willow was a great character to read about as well. I loved her spririt. She had so much fire within her, even though her past was quite tragic.

My favorite part out of the whole book was the time Julian and Willow spend on board of the ship. I lvoed the whole atmosphere of it and combined with the author's gorgeous writing it was all even more amazing.

Aside from being a romantic historical and paranormal story it was also a mystery. It was one I really enjoyed and kept me on my toes. It just was one unexpected twist after another and I didn't see any of them coming so I can only applaud the author for this.

And gosh... was it one amazing romance! Like I mentioned before there were many swoony moments. Willow and Julian really had some amazing chemistry going on between them. They both had their flaws but in the end I thought it made them all the more perfect together.

I also feel like I should mentioned that the next book is going to be about Julian's twin Nick. And I'm just so excited about this, you have no idea!

I think I need to immediately change my answer to the question "who's your favourite author?" since I'm once more giving away 5 stars to a Howard book. She deserves them, each and every one of my stars, every bit of my love for her stories, her characters and her writing style. This is what I want in books, this is why I read, this is what I love.

Howard takes the time to catch up with the Thornton family. Although we see only short glimpses of the main characters of her previous book, it's enough to at least know that they're doing quite great, with some ups and some downs. But, she most of all takes the time to introduce us to the new characters, the stars from this book. We get to see their normal lives, how they interact with others and how they live. And therefore we quickly bond with them and start caring about them.

And that's where the true story starts. As soon as Howard introduces the mystery and more and more storylines start to intertwine and mingle it's hard to put this book away. I just wanted to keep on reading. I wanted to know what was going on, what it had to do with Willow and Julian and how they were eventually gonna solve the issue and get their happily ever after.

The wonderful mixture of interesting and endearing characters, a lovely adventure with a little bit of danger and a heartwarming romance, all written in a wonderful flowery and lively writing style, eventually lead to me caring that much about these characters and their journey, that tears rolled down my cheeks in the finale. I just was so incredibly touched.

And after reading the blurb for the next book, I can't wait to read it next week!

It’s no secret I’m a huge fan of AG Howard so when I was offered a copy to read I jumped on it. I adore Howard’s characters and they always have such great chemistry. This book takes place 19 years after The Architect of Song and once again it deals with a ghost story. I love the bits of mystery woven into the story and I have a feeling that as we read more and more in this series we’ll see how each book is interwoven more than we even think.
The characters in THH were so beautifully done. The two main characters, Willow and Julian, were well rounded and whew-they had chemistry! This book had lots of kissing (yay!!) along with a great mystery. The pacing was quick and it was a fast read. And, look at that cover. Swoon.
The side characters were wonderful too; especially little Newton. I grew very attached to him and I’m excited to think we’ll see him in the next book (I hope!). Julian’s twin brother, Nick, wasn’t in this book all that much but I’m intrigued to learn more about his storyline. I didn’t love his actions but with Julian as his brother and his parents being who they are I know there’s got to be a great side to him. I’m eager to read about it. Emilia was also intriguing and I loved the little bits of her book we get to read. Really, I could read a book about each of these characters happily.
The storyline was really creative and I didn’t predict all the outcomes which is always fun. Howard has such a skill at creating an atmosphere in her books. You can feel the magic in the air as you read and I just love her descriptions, especially her character’s clothing. Howard adds little details that paint things so clearly in your mind’s eye. Her character’s clothing choices and style really help to help you understand her character’s personalities.
Final Thoughts:
The Hummingbird Heart was yet another gorgeous book by Howard. Once again she delivers addicting writing, character chemistry and an atmosphere that keeps you enthralled. I highly recommend this romantic ghost story!
I know some of you will ask- do I have to read The Architect of Song first? I really think you could read these out of order but you will be spoiled on a bit and I think reading them in publishing order allows for the stories to build on each other.

3,5/5 ⭐️

4.5 stars!

This is Howard's best series so far and that's coming from someone who enjoyed her Splintered series a whole heck of a lot.

I preferred The Architect of Song just a bit more than this installment but it is still such a wonderful series so far and I will be anxiously awaiting the next book!

Why I Love This Series And You Should Too:

-Likeable protagonists that are full of gumption! Willow is such a wonderful female character. She's tomboyish, feminine, sassy, caring, passionate and everything I always love to see in a leading lady. Julian (I swear every book where there's a Julian I end up loving them) is such a newb when it comes to romance and is so ridiculously smart and goonish you can't help but fall in love with him!
-Physical Disability Rep. 6-year-old Newton is mute and I love how Howard includes characters with these attributes (also: deafness, blindness etc.) because I don't see a lot of characters like this as of late. But as a woman who very much has a working voice I can't really speak on his particular issue. I will say that I wasn't upset or uncomfortable with how his character was portrayed and that's what I base my opinion off of.
-The swoon-worthiest romance that had chemistry off the charts. Willow and Julian. Julian and Willow my loves. Ugh their romance was perfect. No complaints from me whatsoever. And the romantic scenes are not at all graphic so if you are looking for a New Adult series that dials down the pillow talk this is the one for you!
-Ghosts, dark and alluring atmosphere, family drama. This series has all that and a bag of chips.
-The writing was so LUSH I just about want to jump for joy with how beautiful A.G. Howard's words are. I am glad I took my time with this one because it is worth savoring every delectable word from her.

Anyways, this series is fantastic. Please go read it!

If you don't know about Howard's writing then I suggest you get out from the rock you've crawled under! Her writing is compelling, beautiful and lyrical. And she knows how to write gothic novels!

But in the historical genre? She also does a pretty amazing job! This book takes place 19 years after the end of the first book, "The Architect of Song" and follows the story of Willow and Julian. They are both in love with each other, and they try to hide it from one another. Also, there is a mystery in the ship, they've sailed into that will keep you in you on the edge of your seat wondering who is the real villain and who the victim.

Also, the eroticism in this book may be subtle but it does you swoon and fan yourself. The historical elements were very well described and it is obvious that Howard has done her research in order to give a realistic story to her readers. I really recommend reading the first book of the series though before diving into this one.

Read more of my reviews at Cornerfolds.com!

Last year I read The Architect of Song and it turned out to be one of my absolute favorite books of 2016! I was a little unsure how the series could continue with such a huge time jump. (Those kinds of things can be so hit or miss! I'm pleased to announce that everything went better than expected!

The Hummingbird Heart picks up 19 years after the ending of The Architect of Song with Julian, who lives with his family at The Manor of Diversions, and Willow, who has taken refuge there after the death of her parents. Willow has been raised alongside Julian and his siblings and loves them as family, but also feels something stronger for Julian, who is dead set on visiting the World's Fair while she attends finishing school, much to her dismay. Rather than letting Julian take off on an adventure without her, Willow sneaks aboard his ship intending to follow him across the ocean. Of course, it doesn't work out quite as seamlessly as she'd hoped and that is where the excitement begins!

I loved both of these characters so much! Willow is a strong woman with a tragic background and no intention of following social convention. I loved her absolute refusal to do what was expected of her and follow her own path instead. Julian was infuriating at (many) times, but his fierce love and protection of Willow had me falling for him long before the end. Newton was another crucial character in this story who grew on me, although I wasn't sure of his purpose at first. I enjoyed how his story intertwined with that of Willow and Julian's and loved their interactions with him! Julian and Newt together was hilarious more often than not!

The story was totally unexpected and fantastic! I wasn't sure what to expect or how it would tie into The Architect of Song, but I knew that there must be ghosts, and I was not disappointed! The plot was very different from the first book in the series and completely original. I loved how seamlessly everything came together in the end and was definitely surprised! I never saw the twist coming at all!

The Hummingbird Heart is gorgeously written and the atmosphere is perfectly gothic, creepy, and romantic. Although this is certainly not horror, there was a sense of foreboding that overshadowed all of the events that I absolutely adored! I also loved the little nods to Alice in Wonderland throughout the story. (In case you aren't aware, A.G. Howard's first series is an Alice retelling!) I will say that this book was a bit slower to start than The Architect of Song and there were times when it moved at a bit of a slower pace than I might have liked, but it wasn't enough to detract from my overall enjoyment - it just meant that it took slightly longer to reach the end. Now that I think about my long wait for book three, I'm not sure that's a bad thing!

I can't say much more about this book without spoilers, but trust me when I say that it was fantastic! If you are a fan of gothic historical fiction, this book is one you aren't going to want to miss! And while reading book one was definitely helpful to understand some of the background information in this book, I definitely think The Hummingbird Heart can be read as a standalone. I can't wait to get my hands on The Glass Butterfly!

Wow, this book was right in my wheelhouse! A perfect blend of historical fiction, fantastical elements, and lovely, charming romance (with just a perfect dollop of spicy). I am such a sucker for the ghost-story romance trope and this book nailed it to perfection, as did the first book in the Haunted Hearts series. I'm looking forward to reading the concluding book in the series.

Bravo!

The Hummingbird Heart is the second book in the Haunted Hearts Legacy series, and picks up 19 years from we left off in The Architect of Song. It’s starts with a terrible tragedy that just tears at your heartstrings. Willows parents are taken from her, and she is sent to live with a family at The Manor of Diversions. Willow has been growing up with Julian, Nick and their younger sister, who happen to be Nicholas and Juliet’s sons and daughter from the first book in the series. Now Willow is almost grown, she has her mind made up of what she wants, and with her being as headstrong as she is, nothing will stop her.

This was such a fantastic cast of characters, it’s hard to pick a favorite. So, I will start with Willow, she is on those characters that I liked from the start. She was a sassy, tomboyish, and didn’t take no crap kinda girl. It was expected of her to be this feminine little thing, to be prim and proper and she was not going to let that happen, at all. How could I not like the rebellious girl. Now, Julian was a smart, wholesome, and handsome young man, pretty much completely opposite of his twin brother who liked to sew his seed where it would take him. Nick has his own issues to deal with, but that’s another story. Willow and Julian have some swoony chemistry with plenty of kissing and sweet moments together. And I just couldn’t get enough of their banter back and forth and the budding romance. There was also a little boy that just stole my heart, and his story was amazing and how it was weaved into the story as whole was magnificent.

Most of the story takes place of a ship that is heading towards St. Louis World’s Fair where Julian is hoping to find investors for his amusement park. Willow and Julian find themselves in a situation with a ghost, and people who can’t really be trusted. And there isn’t anywhere to go, they are on a ship. The atmosphere on the ship was pretty creepy and with so many unanswered questions, who is this little boy? What is his connection to Willow and not only that what does this ghost want with Willow. Not knowing who to trust, and this mystery to solve, it all made for a haunting read. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. As I raced to the finish, I was fairly surprised by it all, but I was happy with how it all played out.

Once again, Howard has brought a wonderful hauntingly romantic tale with a side of a ghostly mystery. The wait for the third installment is going to be torturous, but I it will well worth the wait.

Can we say a new favourite? I think we can..

The Hummingbird Heart by A.G. Howard is the sequel to The Architect Song, but don't let that worry you. This book takes place 19 years after the first one finishes and focuses on the children of the original pairing. It can be read as a stand alone, and you'd still completely understand what is going. However I do believe you get a stronger connection to the characters if you read The Architect of Song first. I have been a reader of A.G. Howard for a while now, loving each and every story she's crafts, but I am going to say that this one may prevail to be my favourite.

The characters felt unique, and each brought the pages to life. This story has a cast of characters, each having a point to the story and remaining stuck in the reader's mind. The main protagonists Willow and Julian are such a stunning pair. Their banter works to entertain readers and cheer for them through and through. Willow it now one of my favourite characters ever to be written. She's not perfect and she's a little reckless. She made me laugh more times then I could've count throughout the novel. This book is set in a time period where men have more of the power, but Willow doesn't let that hold her back. Shes stronger willed and devoted to the people she loves. Reading her character was enlightening and sadden that I won't get to see much of her in the future to come. Julian is the opposite of Willow, he's calculating and wise. In this love story it's clear that opposite personalities bring people together. The rest of the cast was just as important, each holding a quirk to unlock the greater meaning behind the story. Overall Howard did an extremely well job at crafting these characters.

This is one of my favorite authors, she's an auto buy for me. This is the second book in this series and up front I have to say that I normally stay away from this time period, it drives me crazy, I hate the whole proprietary thing, and the scandalousness of women showing an ankle or having to have chaperones, my brain wants to burst a blood vessel. However, I do make exceptions and one thing I love about this particular series is while they do follow the norms of society at this time, this family, perhaps due to the Romani in them, stray outside the norms, and I love that. I really enjoyed reading about the children of the couple from Architect of Song, and that we get some further glimpses of that couple. I liked Willow very much and Julian was a good man for her. The mystery was good as well. I'm really hoping that the next book belongs to the brother Nick, I feel a whopper coming. A.G. Howard is a great author and I love her stories, she has such a gift.

I have been a huge fan of Howard since her Alice in Wonderland retelling, Splintered. Then when her new series started with The Architect of Song, I was very much pleased to get a new group of characters to love, as well as another world built with her beautiful way of weaving words. This second book is set at a different time than the first one in the series. It's something I always wish would happen, but rarely does. We get a look at our couple Juliet and Lord Thornton in the future, and we are getting to see their children. Of course in order for their children to have a romance, the author has to introduce some new characters, and we get quite the emotional introduction of Willow at the beginning of the story.

Okay, I give up. I'm just a sucker for this series.

I guess all I need is a fun romance with some ghostly activity and I'm game.

Despite her still using "g*psy," I can't help but like the characters. Not to mention the romance. Dang it.

So much of this is just too cute, and I just can't. I mean, Julian? Newton?
Oh, and I adore Willow.

Yes, the next one is on it's way to me as I write this.

Someone talk some sense into me. I am not a romance reader (not saying there's anything wrong with romance, just not my usual shtick), what happened?! Why can't I resist this series?!

Also, Dear Author, please stop using racial slurs.

3,5*

A potom to niekoho predsa len prestane baviť, najskôr väčšinu čitateľov.

Až príliš veľa priestoru venovala myšlienkovým pochodom hlavných hrdinov, čo naťahovalo úvod príbehu a odďaľovalo skutočný rozbeh deja.

Ústredná časť vynahrádza trpký pocit z uťahaného začiatku, avšak ani to nestačí.

I enjoyed the continuation of the Thorntons' story, how the resort has grown, and who their grown children have become. Willow is another damaged character with a dark past, but this storyline is a bit lighter than the first book. The changing settings in England, on the boat and train, and in St. Louis kept the pace moving nicely. The reveal of the truth and the past were deliciously slow and twisted, making it very satisfying near the end when a full explanation was provided. I also liked the growth of Julian and Willow, not only closer together, but finding who they are as adults and individuals along their joint and separate journeys. Very sweet and happy ending, and I'm ready to hear what happens to the other Thornton children.

Maturity level: new adult, meaning not for teens and under. There are a few significant moments of danger and violence, but drugs, drinking, and swearing are at a minimum, especially given the time period. However, in slight contrast to the time period, the scenes of intimacy and mentions of physical responses to the opposite gender are more explicit than I'd prefer. The story is mostly driven by the investigation of a mystery and ghostly involvement, with occasional lingering on sexual pursuits. I just wish the latter parts were a little less descriptive.
