World-class equestrian, Jessica Wyeth, is thrust into the middle of a game of geopolitical warfare. Reeling from revelations of her connection to the violent struggles to expunge Britain from Northern Ireland, she’s blocked by unseen forces from returning to the United States.
The facts of Jessica’s birth become her deepest secret. Her late mother was considered by Northern Ireland to be a terrorist and her father is a key negotiator between violent Irish Republican Army (IRA) factions in Belfast and the British Government.
Jessica vows to keep her father’s identity hidden at all costs.
Only one man knows Jessica’s truth. Michael Connaught, heir to an international crime family who profits from political uprisings, struggles with his own legacy. He is torn between protecting the woman he loves or using her secrets as a catalyst for inciting global unrest.
When a terrorist bomb rips through the crowd at the Atlanta-based Summer Olympic Games, Jessica is forced to fight for her life in ways she never dreamed.
Connie Johnson Hambley grew up on a small dairy farm just north of New York City. In 1965, an arsonist burned her family's barn to the ground. From that experience grew the stories that have become "The Charity" and "The Troubles."
Hambley writes about strong women from their perspective in situations that demand the most from them. No special powers, no gadgets, no super human abilities. Just a woman caught up or embroiled in something that she has to get out of, hopefully alive.
Every bit of personal experience is used to create a story that is as believable as it is suspenseful. Using her law and investment background in ways unique, creative, but not altogether logical, Hambley has enjoyed robust professional pursuits that include writing for Bloomberg BusinessWeek and Nature Biotechnology. Experience at a major bank in Boston introduced her to clever schemes dreamed up to launder money.
Hambley writes page-turners and "The Charity" is the first in a series. Look for updates and information on facebook.com/thecharitythriller, on Twitter follow @conniehambley and thecharitythriller.blogspot.com.
I bought a signed copy at the Author's book signing event in Hartford. This tale kept me on the edge of my seat and up for two nights until I finished it. Jessie tears at your heart as you hope she can finally be with her horses. The twisted ending was worth the wait for this trilogy. The characters's flaws and logic had me shouting at times, and cursing. I'm now going back to read the first two books in this trilogy.
Connie Johnson Hambley delivers an unforgettable tangled web of suspense in her latest book The Wake. She gives the reader a heroine that’s smart, strong and resilient. It’s a fast paced book that grips the reader’s attention till the last page. Is a terrorist born or made? The action packed plot feels timely and modern. It certainly resonates with readers, who love a masterfully written book. A perfect addition to your reading list. Jessica Wyeth is intelligently crafted by Hambley - a believable character, who feels authentic.
Wyeth’s late mom is considered a terrorist in Northern Ireland, while her father is a major player in negotiating a truce between the IRA and the British government. Can old wounds between these two rivals be healed if Wyeth’s family secrets are brought to light?
The Wake is a thrilling read and a heart-pounding tale. An excellent ending to the Jessica Wyeth’s trilogy.
Jessica Wyeth can’t trust anyone. She fled to Ireland to escape an organized crime syndicate run by the father of her lover, Michael Connaught. Now she wants to come home to resume her life as a noted international horse trainer, but she can’t set foot on American soil until she deals with U.S. Immigration officials who believe she was involved in a terrorist bombing in the UK. It’s 1996 and “The Troubles” are still ripping at the fabric of Northern Ireland.
Jessica wants nothing more than to be left alone with her horses; but without knowing friend from enemy, she can’t relax. Michael inherited an international arms dealership from his recently deceased father and may or may not be attempting to turn his father’s syndicate into a legitimate business. Jessica’s wastrel Uncle William is conspiring to seize the fortune left to Jessica by his brother. In Ireland, Jessica found her birth father, a Catholic bishop; but he can’t help or even acknowledge her without exposing his less than celibate past and endangering his peacemaking negotiations in Northern Ireland.
The Wake is the final installment of Hambley’s Jessica Trilogy, but be assured the book can be fully enjoyed without having read the first two books, The Charity and The Troubles. Hambley knows how to write a thriller. The Wake will keep you awake, hoping you can stay up to finish just one more chapter. And every chapter is worth the sleep loss. The surprise ending includes one of the best chase scenes ever written. This book is a winner.
I loved the conclusion to the Jessica Trilogy by Connie Johnson Hambley. The twists and turns of the plot are unexpected but believable. My only complaint: there's no good stopping point in the book for setting it down and returning to "real life"!
Started out slower then I would have liked. But at some point it became a page turner with many twists and turns. Although it's the end of a trilogy it would be interesting to see how things move forward from the ending.
