4.5 Finding her way home Stars

Tempting Fate, the 4th book in the Colorado High Country Series, was great. I have been wanting Chaska's book since book 1. If you go back to my reviews of the other 3 books in this series you will see I was like I can't wait for Chaska's book in each one lol. To say I was excited to see Tempting Fate on Netgalley would be an understatement. I was over the moon. And that cover.... OMFG that cover is drool worthy. That cover deserves a standing ovation!
Chaska was everything I wanted and more. He was sexy, smart, and brave. He helped others, was respectful, and was just all around panty melting yummy. He has a calmness to him that was very peaceful, but he could be fun too. I loved how much family and helping others meant to him. Chaska was just an all around great guy. I fell in love with Chaska in book 1 and my love for him grew with every book. Naomi was a fighter. She had a hard life and no one to support her but she fought to make a living for herself. I thought it was so cool that Naomi made jewelry. Naomi had some major insecurities about her self worth, her sexuality, and her talent. Naomi was sweet, talented and honest. She had a love and respect for wild life. From start to finish I felt Naomi really grew in this book.
Chaska and Naomi were very sweet together. They had a lot in common and got along well. I loved that Chaska showed Naomi that it was okay to enjoy sex. That sex with someone that respects and cares for you can be a beautiful thing. I loved the build up of their relationship. I had a good laugh at the jalapeno incident. Chaska was so sweet and supportive of Naomi. Chaska wasn't the only one that was supportive of Naomi, the whole town came together to support her. I loved the friendship between Naomi and Winona. I would love for Winona to get a book.....hint....hint! I loved the Lakota aspect of this book. Being part Cherokee I love reading about the Native American heritage in any book. Especially when it's shown in a well researched and respectful way. I also loved getting to see the Rocky Mountain Search & Rescue gang and the past couples again. The HEA was awesome and very sweet. I would like to know if Naomi and her mom are going to have a relationship in the future though. Tempting Fate was a sweet, easygoing and entertaining read. I enjoyed every minute of it and I can't wait for the next book!

A real gem.
If you ask me why I love Pamela Clare’s books? The answer is very simple; they always take me on an emotional ride full of love, joy, hope, excitement, laughter, tears, and more. And Tempting Fate is no different. It had my emotions all over the place, of course, in a good way! While reading this, I went from smiling to laughing and to crying, and back again within a matter of moments. For me, it was such a great reading experience.
I can wholeheartedly say that this book checked all my right boxes!
Wonderful and desirable hero. Check.
Adorable heroine. Check.
Heartwarming and beautiful-written story. Check.
Sensual and breathtaking romance. Check.
Memorable ending. Check.

I loved Chaska Belcourt. This man, oh, this man! The author has always created such amazing heroes. Chaska is the man of my dreams. He has a beautiful heart. He's caring, tender, compassionate, understanding, altruistic, and oh, so endearing in every way! I love it when the hero takes care of the heroine and helps her in her times of need. And Chaska has always been there for Naomi through both good times and bad. *loves*
Naomi has been a fighter since the day she was born. The way she managed to get through her tough times was so moving yet inspiring. She’s my kind of heroine—strong, intelligent, capable, brave, but still very feminine. I loved that her character is believable and realistic. Sometimes women can be difficult, unreasonable, or even stubborn. There’s no need to keep emotions in check or pretend to be tough or invincible all the time. There’s nothing wrong with getting emotional either. Crying doesn’t mean that you’re weak, but it means that you’re human. Naomi isn’t flawless. And that’s why I enjoyed her character so much.
I love reading the stories about the Native Americans in general, so I genuinely enjoyed learning more about the Lakota Indians and their way of life in this book. I loved the way the author wove this aspect into the story and she did it perfectly.
One of many things I was impressed about this book was the kindness and support of the townspeople of Scarlet toward Naomi. I personally believe in the goodness of mankind. I believe that people are inherently good at heart, and I also believe in the selflessness that causes people to reach out and extend a helping hand to someone in need. So, for me, it wasn’t too far-fetched that the locals held a fundraiser for Naomi. On the contrary, it touched my heart deeply! This part of the story was very inspiring and uplifting.
This book had a little bit of everything I love in my romance read. There was plenty of sweetness that made me go aww, and there were enough emotional moments that brought tears to my eyes. If sweet romance stories are your things, please look no further and pick up this one! You’ll love it!

We return to the Rocky Mountain Search & Rescue team for the further book in Pamela Clare’s outstanding Colorado High Country series.
Tempting Fate is Chaska Belcourt’s story, and I loved this book from its first paragraph to the last of the epilogue. I’m a relatively new reader of Ms. Clare’s work, this series has basically been my initiation into her awesome writing style, and once again she did not disappoint.
"Don’t think I’ve gotten enough of you because I haven’t."
This book is a little of everything but all built around a great romance. The author took the Native American heritage that Chaska lives his life by and the beliefs he has that stem from it, and weaved it into the story, as well as the romance that built between him and Naomi from the moment of her rescue right to the point where they declared their love for one another.
"What you are… is a survivor. Who you are is entirely up to you."
Both characters aren’t actually looking for love and romance, so it comes as a bit of a surprise when their feelings towards each other change almost immediately. The chemistry between these two was off the charts, but the sexy times weren’t rushed. Naomi and Chaska’s ideas about love, sex and relationships are wholly different due to their upbringings and I just adored the way Chaska went about restoring Naomi’s confidence in herself sexually and as a woman in general.
"May be the Great Mystery behind this world see’s all you’ve endured, knows how brave you’ve been and how alone, and wants you to be happy…"
This was just an all-round enjoyable read. It’s like going back and catching up with friends and family now, I just adore the whole dynamic with the Rocky Mountain Search & Rescue family and each book the author releases that adds to the depth of knowledge I have of the area and the characters, and it just makes each book even better.
"This place, these people… Naomi could come to love this."
This is a series that will hopefully run and run, the author has set up Scarlet Springs, its residents, and the Rocky Mountain Search & Rescue team in such a way that I don’t think she will run out of stories to tell or characters to put in them any time soon.

Naomi Archer is vacationing in the Colorado mountains near Scarlett Springs when she is confronted by some very bad people. She is ultimately discovered and rescued by Chaska and Winona Belcourt who take her in while she recovers. Naomi gets to see the best of the community during her time with them and is exposed to the Lakota heritage, which may be her own.
I loved everything, and I mean everything, about this story. Naomi captured my heart and Chaska my mind, body and soul. Her story was heartbreaking and her initial encounter with Chaska truly felt destined. Their developing relationship was just wonderful as he also led her to the Native American culture she'd always wanted to embrace. You'll have to read the story to learn why as I don't want to ruin the experience. Chaska isn't perfect but he's pretty close, especially in his sensitivity to Naomi, other women and his search & rescue team. Yes, he's gorgeous, talented and sexy but it's his inner beauty that makes him special.
So often Native American history and heritage is wrapped inside an aura of mysticism and otherworldly impressions. Not so in this story where culture and practices are steeped in traditions and philosophies that are in tandem with the environment and history. It has such an air of authenticity that I knew the author had been exposed to the culture more than just through casual research, which was indeed the truth (see the author's notes at the end). It was quite the education, one that I won't forget.
This story is outstanding and has a bit of mystery and suspense to go along with the romance and history. The strong sense of community was pervasive throughout the book, not only in Scarlet Springs but in the Lakota tribe, so much so that it was almost palpable, like they were separate characters. It is a powerful story on so many levels, one that will stay with me. I love this series but I especially loved this story.

O M G I love Chaska <3 Naomi is a sweetheart <3
I was so eager to read the 4th book in the Colorado High Country Series. The main reason: Chaska
I've been so intrigued by this tall dark and handsome hero. All of the Search & Rescue team members are heroes.There's just something I loved about Chaska- even as a minor character in books 1-3.
The setting of course, is Scarlet Springs, CO. Not too far from Boulder. It's July, in the mountains above Scarlet Springs, CO
This is told in 3rd person POV. The heroine, Naomi is new to this series. Chaska and Naomi's meeting is very dramatic.
The beginning of this story really takes off. Naomi is pretty much all alone in the world. She's a talented photographer and nature/wildlife jewelry artist.She's camping while she explores and photographs the scenery and wildlife.
Chaska's sister Winona had just been on Chaska's case to find a special someone. He's been busy with work as an aerospace engineer and volunteering with the S&R Team. Winona runs a wildlife sanctuary. She has a wolf, Shota, who plays a key role in helping save Naomi. No sooner did Winona mention finding someone.... they come upon Naomi. I don't want to give too many specific details. I love how the story unfolds.
Yes, it's dramatic. Naomi is rather mild mannered, timid. She's much stronger than she realizes. Her early life was really tough to read about. It made me angry and sad. Naomi felt like she didn't belong anywhere. She had the look of a Native American, but with blue eyes.
Chaska and Winona didn't press her for details-at first. She gradually reveals her past.
Chaska and Naomi grow closer. Chaska is very gentle and protective of her. He tells her that this is one of the definitions of a warrior. Chaska and Winona are Oglala Lakota. Chaska and Winona aren't in touch with their parents but are close to their grandpa, they call "Old Man". I absolutely love Winona and "Old Man". Winona is my all time favorite book-sibling. Old Man (Grandpa Belcourt) cracked me up. His wisdom and sage advice had me missing having a grandparent around.
The town- people of Scarlet Springs are very kind and welcoming to Naomi while she recovers. They seem too good to be true. I went with it. I'm sure that there are small close-knit communities that regularly help out those who need it.
The suspenseful part is in the first half of the book. That leaves the 2nd half for Chaska and Naomi's relationship to grow. AND of course-- the romance. Whew. Chaska, WOW. He's so wonderful to Naomi, and very patient and romantic.
Naomi (and I) learned a lot about the Lakota ways. Naomi learns more about her own heritage.
There were no slow parts for me. I was really caught up in this wonderful story.
Naomi was NOT weak at all. Chaska & Winona, Old Man and many others recognized her strength in surviving-and beginning to thrive. It wasn't really a coincidence that Naomi & Chaska met. I think that Naomi was drawn to Scarlet Springs. She found her way home, her real home.
I loved the ending. It was so funny and romantic. The epilogue was very good. HEA.
Be sure to read the Author's Note at the end (98%). I sometimes skip those. Ms Clare mentions her personal and journalist experiences with the Native peoples.
I will be re-reading this book many many times. Chaska and Naomi's love story is about finding their one and only. They were in each other's path.

This is the fourth book in Pamela Clare's Colorado High Country series. As with the others, it's chock full of rescues involving hottie hot rescuers with great bods, and quirky characters.
Chaska Belcourt is a member of the elite group of rescuers that cover the Rocky Mountains. On a hike, he, his sister, Winona, and their trusty wolf (!!!) Shota come across Naomi Archer just in the nick of time. Naomi was injured when she escaped a couple of fugitive convicts who decided to take over her campsite, and she's close to death when Shota finds her.
There's a lot of great background on Chaska's heritage. Sadly, Naomi has never known her heritage. She knows she's mixed race because of her blue eyes, but she was found abandoned as a newborn. Adopted by a cruel couple who stifled any interest in her possible background, Naomi knows nothing about where she comes from. With Chaska and Winona's help, she comes to grips with her life and all that happened before she ever got the chance to make any choices for herself.
It's a lovely story that has some nice laughs and romantic love scenes. I liked that Chaska and Naomi came together so naturally and didn't have any contrived freak outs. This is one of the things I really like about Pamela Clare's writing. It's low on contrivances. Things flow organically. If a problem arises, it doesn't feel like it was shoehorned in for the sake of making something happen.
As with a lot of PC's work, this one has amazing research. The author's note at the end explains her own history with the native people in Colorado and how she came to be so knowledgeable about their lifestyles. She also finds ways to bring a tear to the eye. There are a few moments that are very poignant and PC handles them well.
This series is independently published, which would make me feel good about buying it even if it weren't so professionally presented. While there are a few typos and such, they're far fewer than many of the pro published books I've been reading lately. Add to that the attention to detail in the narrative and research and you can't go wrong with this series.
Chaska Belcourt is a member of the elite group of rescuers that cover the Rocky Mountains. On a hike, he, his sister, Winona, and their trusty wolf (!!!) Shota come across Naomi Archer just in the nick of time. Naomi was injured when she escaped a couple of fugitive convicts who decided to take over her campsite, and she's close to death when Shota finds her.
There's a lot of great background on Chaska's heritage. Sadly, Naomi has never known her heritage. She knows she's mixed race because of her blue eyes, but she was found abandoned as a newborn. Adopted by a cruel couple who stifled any interest in her possible background, Naomi knows nothing about where she comes from. With Chaska and Winona's help, she comes to grips with her life and all that happened before she ever got the chance to make any choices for herself.
It's a lovely story that has some nice laughs and romantic love scenes. I liked that Chaska and Naomi came together so naturally and didn't have any contrived freak outs. This is one of the things I really like about Pamela Clare's writing. It's low on contrivances. Things flow organically. If a problem arises, it doesn't feel like it was shoehorned in for the sake of making something happen.
As with a lot of PC's work, this one has amazing research. The author's note at the end explains her own history with the native people in Colorado and how she came to be so knowledgeable about their lifestyles. She also finds ways to bring a tear to the eye. There are a few moments that are very poignant and PC handles them well.
This series is independently published, which would make me feel good about buying it even if it weren't so professionally presented. While there are a few typos and such, they're far fewer than many of the pro published books I've been reading lately. Add to that the attention to detail in the narrative and research and you can't go wrong with this series.

This book started right off with a heart pounding experience when 27 year old Naomi is camping by herself in the Colorado mountains and two escape convicts approach her campsite. The next day, Chaska and his sister, Winona are walking Shota, a wolf rescue on the trails when Shota suddenly takes off. When they catch up to Shota, he is nudging an unconscious Naomi in need of medical attention. Chaska, being part of the local Search and Rescue team puts a call out for the team.
Naomi was very lucky. She fought off her captors and escaped but not before she suffers being shot at and breaking her ankle. What the author unveils for us from here is a beautiful and heartwarming tale of a town that comes together to help a stranger heal physically and financially, all the while Chaska and Naomi grow closer together.
I really enjoyed the small town setting and these wonderful people who care more about others than most of us experience in real life. It's the small town filled with people that we all wish we could find for ourselves. It trully added more to this story.
Chaska is hands down one of the best Hero's I've read. Not only was his physical description drool worthy, but the way the author described him as a human being was so much more appealing to me. He was such a kind, giving man. He's a true Lakota warrior with the way he takes care of anyone who needs it. He was not a womanizer and showed such respect for woman. Even put into a difficult situation with another woman, he handles it in such a way that had me falling for him even more.

I'm quite relieved that we don't hold nor follow any traditions in my family as I'm pretty sure that I will be the first one to sidestep and move away from it.
Traditions / customs / practices for me equals restriction. That's a big NO for me.
I love my freedom. So glad that parentals are supportive of this... or maybe siblings have exhausted them that they don't have the energy left to even worry.
Though I do love hearing stories about tradition from others.

Also, what I did adore about this was even though there is some drama built into the story, it was short lived.
Of course, she didn't forget to add lotS of cameo appearanceS of Jesse Moretti and others.
Jesse Moretti, Ms Clare loves to tease me.

Naomi and Chaska have a very unconventional start to a relationship. Naomi knows very little out her family heritage, and craves that knowledge. Chaskas’ heritage is known for generations, a constant in his life. Together they carry an intense attraction to each other, within days the couple have faced numerous battles, cultural and personal. Ms. Clare formulated the perfect couple to face lifes challenges and come out stronger and better than before.
Pamela Clares’ novels have never left me disappointed; her quality of work is astounding. Every character is full developed and adds depth to the novels. Ms. Clare provides little quirks to each character making them so realistic and believable. The secondary characters allow small glances back to previous couples or glances into an upcoming couple. She provides such strikingly real detail in each novel, details only someone who has lived part of the novel could provide. Tempting Fate has easily become my most desired Pamela Clare novel, it has left me wanting more and more from Scarlet Springs!

The fourth book in Pamela Clare's Colorado High Country series. Naomi Archer is on vacation hiking in the mountains when 2 men hold her at gunpoint. She knows what is coming so she makes her escape and nearly dies. But Chaska Belcourt and his sister, Winona, are hiking the mountain the next morning and rescue her. Faced with recuperating on her own, Naomi is invited to stay with Winona and Chaska to mend.
Naomi has identity issues with the fact she was abandoned at birth and adopted by a couple who treated her harshly. She escaped that life and made a new one making jewelry but she has never really felt like she belonged. Chaska is proud of his heritage but chose to leave to pursue a career as an engineer. He also volunteers with the Rocky Mountain Search & Rescue Team. Both are wonderful, lovable characters that you can't help but root for. There was a small mystery involved in discovering Naomi's roots but mostly it was about building relationships and more than just the romantic one.
I have said it many times that Pamela Clare cannot write a bad book and this one was awesome. Another highly recommended book and series!

Another wonderful story set in Scarlett, Colorado. I have to say that I particularly like Pamela's novels with native American characters. She captures Chaska, Naomi and Winona (and their various relatives)with the respect and honour they deserve...but she also manages to make Chaska steamy hot! Special note on "Old Man" Belcourt...loved his spunk and charisma!
I really like that the author shares notes on many (if not all) of her novels. In her note for this book she gives us her background with Native issues as a journalist. Once I read the author's note, I understood why her descriptions seem so realistic - she's experienced many of the rituals she's describing. I think that having a personal take on much of her work makes the stories that much richer. Thanks for the great book, Pamela...and may you never run out of experiences and research material!

Naomi had a hard start to life. Left by a dumpster soon after being born, nearly dying. She has no knowledge of who she is or where she came from and still she fought to make a life for herself. An artist at making jewelry, she yearns for a past, a connection to who she is.
Chaska Belcourt grew up on the reservation of his people but strayed away after a betrayal. Still close with his grandfather, Old Man, and his sister who he lives with. His strength and view of the world and live is refreshing.
When he & his sister and her pet wolf find Naomi broken and bleeding and near death in the forest he will do anything to keep her safe. With no where to go his sister offers her a place to stay with them and that close proximity leads to a rush of feelings in both. As the two grow closer, fonder, secrets of her past will be revealed and besides growing closer to him she may just learn who she is.
I loved this book, may be my favorite so far. Pamela Clare is a MUST read author. At least in my eyes.

I truly adore Pamela Clare's writing. She is one of the best contemporary romance authors on the market. She can truly write a captivating story and she doesn't need dirty talk, erotic sex (not that there is anything wrong with that) or suspense to keep a story going. I truly enjoy every book of hers that I read. I'm never bored.
I found this story so enjoyable and entertaining. I loved all the sweet surprises we got in this story. The laughter and the tears. I enjoyed the little bit of "mystery" in this book. I loved how Chaska was led to Naomi and how their love progressed and grew.
Truly enjoyable book and I look forward to the next book in this series.

There are few authors who can paint a story like she can and in "Tempting Fate" she has filled her canvas with the wonders of the Native American community, their traditions and their lore. Pamela Clare has forged her way through the trenches of 'normal', 'run of the mill' romances, straight into the stratosphere of 'Romance Legend'. I'll buy ANY of her books, regardless of genre, at any point that they are released. She's a talented writer, not 'dumbing down' any of her conversations between characters, or her diligently worded novels, so that we can get sucked into them. She does so much justice to Native People just by taking on a story like this.
Chaska and Naomi are a lovely couple. Naomi's backstory is a confusion of not knowing where she came from, and Chaska (on the other hand) knows exactly where he's from and embraces that past, even has scars to prove it.
The romance is top notch, the storytelling is beautiful and the characters (secondary and beyond) really pull you the rest of the way into this dynamic plot. Its a beautiful mix of family and friends.

I tried the first book and DNFd it, so I thought I'd give this series another go with this book. I don't know, it just isn't for me, I thought it was just okay. I had some of the same complaints as the first book - good lord, not an average looking person in this whole group, I mean, everyone is beautiful, perfect, amazing! The whole town is amazing, the heroine has a really bad experience and every single person in the town knows who she is, wants to help, gives her clothes, gives her money, they should rename the whole town to Mary Sue township. I mean, the first few chapters I was searching for an ugly, mean person in the town just to give me some real. I was hoping I would love this book so I would read the rest, but it really just confirmed that even though I love some of Clare's other work, this series isn't for me.

After all, she is a woman who has no friends, no family, and a long way from her home. This story covers not only the romance between these two characters, but the struggle Naomi has as she tries to discover who and what she is.
This is a sweet, low angst romance filled with lots of interesting information about the Lakota as well as the operations of a search and rescue team. The pacing is solid without getting too bogged down when sharing these details. There were several storylines this book could have taken that would have dialed the excitement up a bit but were either left to dangle or dealt with off page. Even so it was a nice read.

The pacing is solid without getting too bogged down when sharing these details. There were several storylines this book could have taken that would have dialed the excitement up a bit but were either left to dangle or dealt with off page. Even so it was a nice read.

I feel the need to say how much I like this author, because I've never read a book by her that I didn't love. It's like she doesn't know how to write a bad book ;p This series is simply amazing !
When the story begin, it grab my attention right from the start with the heroine being in danger. The hero is walking on a trail with his sister and their pet wolf Shota, when the canine scent something and lead them to a woman seriously injured and bleeding. They rescue her and learn that she doesn't know a thing about her origin. Naomi was left by her mother next to a dumpster when she was a baby and raised by religious fanatics. She came to Scarlet Springs for a vacation and to take pictures. With no family and insufficient means to support herself after her recovery, Winona and Chaska welcome Naomi at their house during her convalescence. Winona is playing matchmaker and try to convince her brother that Naomi's presence is an answer to his request to find the right woman. Chaska is popular with the ladies without trying, but he never was a man to fool around and see love and sex as a sacred and special thing. Is it a Lakota thing or a Chaska thing ? No matter what, I find it attractive.
Once again, I think the author choose the perfect title and she made an excellent job at "selling" the State of Colorado. This book may not have a lot of action or twist and turn, but that doesn't mean it wasn't fascinating and fun to read. With the hero being a Native and all the details about the Lakota's customs and culture, I really enjoyed learning about a different culture. It may seem repetitive at first (if you read the other books) to read about Chaska explaining to the heroine what he do as a member of Rocky Mountain Search & Rescue team and showing her the place in town we already know, but it's good information if you begin the series with this book and anyway, I like the setting of Scarlet Spings and it gives an opportunity for the protagonists to meet again the other characters.
I must say that I especially enjoyed Chaska's belief about sex, how significant it is. The attraction between him and Naomi was hot, but in a languorous way that I have not seen often before. It showed that sensuality is just as important as sexuality.
I just can't get enough of this series ! Not only because Pamela Clare always create amazing characters, but I enjoy reading about wildlife and nature.

It's a good read. I liked Naomi, and it was good for Chaska to have his story. Although this series is no I-Team, it is getting better by the book. Lots of sexy, studly S & R guys. The summary of this one gives too much of the storyline away...

I enjoyed the overall story, especially because it incorporates the hero's Native American heritage. Those cultural elements are woven seamlessly into the story. My one critique is that this story is the perfect vehicle for romantic suspense. I know why this is not THAT story, but it cries out for more danger and suspense.

I know for a fact I read this end of 2017 but did I forget to mark it down here?! I could have sworn I wrote I love Chaska ahhhhh anyway, I LOVE CHASKA.

It has been a long time since I read one of the Colorado High Country novels, but they've never truly disappointed me. This one blew all the previous ones away!
I loved Naomi and Chaska's story! I thought that the Native American heritage plotline was delicately and gently woven into the story, to the point where it was so integral to the story that I think the book would have been diminished without it. I really identified with Naomi, especially her hope at finding her people. Chaska was so wonderful with her at every step of the way, he is so my favorite of the CHC heroes!
I liked that this book had a bit more suspense than the others, but that it was more subtle this time. This story was definitely about the romance and not the suspense angle! I also loved how Naomi wound up standing up for herself on more than one occasion in this book!
This will be very hard to top in future CHC novels!

Basically, my first thought upon seeing this new Pamela Clare release was: "Another historical?" But then I realized this was the fourth installment of Colorado High Country and I freaked out! Because, how did I miss this book's release?
Well, that situation got remedied real quickly.
The Story:
Chaska Belcourt and his sister Winona chances upon Naomi, wounded and unconscious after a struggle for her life from a pair of escaped convicts. Because of a flippant challenge Chaska had given to the Creator, followed by their wolf companion, Shota, rushing off and leading them to Naomi, Winona believes that fate had intervened, bringing the "right woman" into Chaska's path.
But Chaska is hard pressed to believe that fate had anything to do with it since Shota was the one who found Naomi.
Meanwhile, as Naomi recovers from her injuries--a broken ankle, surgery, and a vandalized car--she is surprised to find how friendly and helpful all the residents of Scarlet Springs are. Naomi had had to learn how to take care of herself after running away from her cult-like adopted family, a place where children are punished harshly for the smallest slights, and where her adopted father controls every aspect of everyone's life in his community. This type of kindness is new to her, and the togetherness in which Scarlet's residents present is a novelty she slowly begins to hope could be part of her own life.
With Chaska and Winona offering her a place to stay until she can get back on her feet, Naomi comes to love her hosts as well as the small town of Scarlet Springs; and soon starts to believe that maybe she's found somewhere to belong. Meanwhile, the attraction between Chaska and Naomi is unmistakable, and even Chaska has to admit that maybe his sister was onto something about fate leading him to the woman he was meant to be with.
My Thoughts:
Tempting Fate read like two stories in one, starting off with a semi-contemporary romance with a romantic suspense lingering in the background. Naomi's escape from the convicts and then the hunt to find them. Meanwhile, Naomi spends her time recovering in the Belcourt siblings' home, trying to figure out how to get her life back together while fearing that the convicts may come back for her.
The second half was straight up contemporary romance, and there is a very slight distinction between the two halves at the 50% mark. The convicts are captured and now Naomi and Chaska's romance takes center stage. In this portion, a lot of mundane, day-to-day activities and events occur, such as little romantic dates, a few Team rescues, and big team dinners, and of course, the steamy sexy times.
We could call it two parts of one story.
First of all, I love how our author infuses so much heart into all of her work. Her characters are always good people, and her message is always positive. This is a standard Pamela Clare story.
And alongside this, she also always tries to bring awareness to a lot of different things; in this case, the Native American community, citing historical events and facts about places like Wounded Knee, or giving us a glimpse of what life is like living on a reservation. Her infusion of the customs and traditions of the Lakota is definitely inspirational, while giving us a glimpse of a contemporary Lakota family and a couple, simply going about their lives, not restricted to stereotypes given by society or media.
It's certainly something to think about.
Tempting Fate is a sweet, lovely contemporary romance, written well, with a great set of characters.
I suppose if I had to complain about something, it would be the somewhat over-dramatic emotional scenes that Pamela will sometimes drop into her romances. She has the tendency to go a little overboard with her character's emotional reactions to any and all events, which will sometimes make me picture her heroine in a sobbing voice almost 90% of the time, and her heroes always clenching their jaw at every negative slight he perceives being directed at his true love.
I sometimes also imagine swooning, and those old fashioned covers where the couple is barely dressed and there's wind blowing, for whatever reason. I mean, all this particular cover is missing is a half-dressed woman, since we've already got heaving man-bosoms.
Add onto that the schmaltzy dialogue during love scenes, and sometimes I have a hard time suspending disbelief. Not that I've ever been in a relationship before, but it just doesn't seem believable that people talk and act like that.
Then again, like I've stated, there is so much heart presented in Pamela's work that it's hard to stay frustrated with the little quibbles. Instead, you just move on and enjoy the rest of the story. Even if the story is a little disjointed, with most of the main conflict resolved before the halfway mark, and then the last half of the book simply filler material to slowly tie together all the loose ends.
Because, after all, all the characters are great characters, and Pamela is a great writer, regardless. As I'd stated before, I honestly have and still enjoy her romantic suspense books much more. And no matter the amount of schmaltz, I still find her books entirely enjoyable, if only because she understands when to cut the schmaltz so that it doesn't become too over the top.
Anyway...
I DID enjoy the little road trips that Chaska takes Naomi on, from one area to another along the mountain ranges, from one little town to another. And I always enjoy seeing the day-to-day activities of the SAR Team.
Overall, this was an entertaining read, and I hope the next book will be about Chaska's sister.

Nothing can beat the magic that was the I Team series.
This romance is sweet, but lacks that extra oomph.

A heart warming love story rich in Lakota customs and history.
As with most of this author's books they come from the heart and her experiences. That always shines through in her writing. As Lakota children Chaska Belcourt and his sister Winona were mostly raised by the elderly in the family because they believe the elders are the wisdom of the Lakota people. They are in charge of passing down the cultural ways. His grandfather was heavily into the old ways and his father is a Sun Dance chief. He likes his heritage but he left the reservation and went to college and his sister soon followed. They both settled into Scarlet Springs where he is both a mechanical engineer and part of the Rocky Mountain Search & Rescue Team. It is while out on a hike that he and his sister come across a badly injured woman that turns out to be his half-side (matching female half)
Naomi Archer is a woman that has been running from her heritage since the day she was abandoned after her birth. She was adopted but religious fanatics who abused her causing her to run away at 16. She's never known her true heritage and was made to believe it was something to be ashamed of by her adoptive parents. Years later she makes her own jewelry and has come to Colorado on vacation to take pictures of and draw animals for future pieces. Its while out in the woods alone that she crosses paths with two dangerous men who mean her harm. She manages to escape them but not before getting shot and injuring herself more. Its Chaska and his sister who come across her and set her rescue in motion.
There are a lot “come to terms” through this book. Chaska having to come to terms with Naomi being the one, Naomi having to overcome the insecurities her past instilled in her and eventually embracing her true heritage along with trusting her heart to Chaska.

Set against the majestic backdrop of Colorado, Clare has created another spell binding winner with Chaska and Naomi's story. Book 4 in the Colorado High Country series, Tempting Fate was a wonderful blend of heritage and family. Perception of not just one's self but also others was a big point as Naomi learns to restructure what she was taught and eventually come to embrace herself. Chaska's Lakota heritage was also fascinating to read about and provided an unusual backstory, but it was one I personally enjoyed learning about.
A tiny blip of suspense, a sweet, very sexy romance, and a wonderfully hysterical, supportive cast of characters blend together beautifully in this carefully crafted story. I'd recommend this series for any contemporary romance reader who likes low angst, snappy humor, and a close-knit, small town, nosy but well-meaning, supportive cast of characters!

I love, love, love Chaska and his gentle ways, and I love how he and Naomi got together. I also love Naomi's journey in finding and then claiming her identity as a Lakota woman. Their romance is sweet and heartwarming until the end. I also enjoyed reading about the tight-knitted Native American community that Chaska, Winona, and Naomi belonged to and their rich culture.
Also Zach McBride made a cameo in this!!!! I freaked and texted Jae about it lol

C'est mimi tout plein ! Pas de personnages qui se torturent les méninges pendant des chapitres à se demander pourquoi ils ressentent ce qu'ils ressentent et s'ils ont le droit de ressentir ça, pas de malentendu, l'histoire coule toute seule comme une évidence. Les personnages sont attachants, et la scène de la demande en mariage est géniale.
Alors ça vaut peut-être plutôt 3,5 que 4, mais c'est pas grave :-)
