A Friends to Lover romance like you’ve never read before… Cari Patrick is my friend. My best friend. He’s every good girl’s dream come true. Funny, sweet and holy-hell hot . Perfect. So what’s the problem? I’m far from perfect and I’m no one’s idea of a good girl. I know that, but I’ve wanted Patrick ever since the first night we met. Ever since I kissed him and… well, did decidedly ungood-girl things to him in the front seat of his car. The same night he gently but firmly shut me down completely with a it was nice to meet you, Cari. I know he’s out of my league, but that doesn’t stop me from wanting him. And if the way he looks at me when he thinks no one is paying attention is any indicator, he wants me too. But he’ll never make a move on me. Not unless I make him. That’s what my friend Tess says. She thinks all Patrick needs is a little push. I think she might be right. The last thing I expected was for him to push back. Patrick Cari is my friend. My best friend. She’s the perfect male fantasy come to life. Talented, smart and so damn beautiful that when she’s around, I can’t seem to look at anyone else. Perfect. So, what’s the problem? I’m a nice guy and we all know where nice guys finish. Dead last. I’ve wanted Cari ever since the first night we met. The night she kissed me. Touched me in ways that made it hard for me to think clearly. But she was drunk and just broken up with her douchebag boyfriend—as much as I wanted her, I couldn’t take advantage of her that way. Because Nice Guy, remember. Even though it’s been years since that night and know she’s moved on, I can’t stop thinking about her. About that night. How good she tasted. How good she felt. But we’re friends now. Best friends. Roommates. And it’s driving me absolutely insane. **Patrick and Cari's story concludes in volume 2, Claiming Cari. USA Today best-selling author Megyn Ward lives on coffee, chocolate and more than the occasional glass of red wine. When she's not spending time with the hot, dirty-talking Alphas and the strong, capable women who love them who live in her head, she's busy chasing chickens (and kids), hanging laundry and burning dinner. Either way, she is almost always in the company of her eight dogs, her truest and most faithful companions, and her almost as faithful husband, Joe. Megyn is also the author of the award-winning Sabrina Vaughn thriller series, written under the name Maegan Beaumont.
The blurb says there's no cheating, but there most definitely is. After pining over the h for months, the H receives a blowjob from another woman, which the h happens to walk in on. That constitutes as cheating in my book. After reading about the blowjob, everything that came afterwards was just meh.
I am so disturbed and upset right now. This book is disgusting.
This "romance" is pure toxic behavior. I prefer to see emotionally healthy relationships and people who are growing towards greater mental/emotional health. But this is a devolving of mental/emotional health for Patrick. Cari is pretty messed up already and it's like she takes Patrick down with her.
They met three years ago when she broke up with his roommate. Patrick is (was until 37%) a solid guy who acted respectfully around Cari. While she tried to make out with him at their first meeting, he puts her off because she's drunk.
For the next three years, even tho she wants him, she dates around (including going back to his roommate) but they become good friends. I'm pretty sure he stays celibate after meeting her. She's the one for him, but SINCE SHES ALWAYS DATING SOMEONE ELSE, he doesn't make a move on her. He thinks they are just friends.
Three years in, she needs a place to live and he offers.
By this time, she finally realizes that she wants him. So decides to see if she can drive him so sexually crazy that he'll break and make moves on her.
BUT SHE KEEPS DATING OTHER PEOPLE!!
And he continues to treat her with respect. When she wanders through their apt wearing little, he just bears it cause he doesn't want to make her uncomfortable.
Well, she finally pushes him so hard (literally) when she asks for his help in zipping up her dress to go on a date. She pushes her butt into his erection and moves on him. AND THEN THE GUY SHES DATING COMES TO PICK HER UP.
And Patrick finally realizes she's TRYING to sexually frustrate him. On purpose. But he doesn't realize she wants him. He just thinks she's trying to frustrate him as a game.
So, when she goes on HER date, he goes to the bar and picks up a woman. Not anyone in particular. Just a willing woman.
And he takes her up to their shared apartment where he gets a blowjob. Now that's already bad enough that this supposedly one-woman man let's another woman suck him. But Cari comes home and sees the end of this. She's decided she needs to say something to him. FINALLY!!!
I am so grossed out.
The "hero" is drunk and has just wiped another woman's lipstick off his dick when he confronts the "heroine" and immediately makes sexual moves on her.
And it just has this rapey feel. Ya, she "wants" it. But she's just told him she's moving out. No one wants to see the guy they care about getting sucked by another woman. And he gets all alpha with Cari, pushing open her bedroom door, and just starts screwing her. And when he's done, he just walks away and doesn't let her explain. He fucked her as a way to "teach her a lesson". It doesn't feel loving. It feels abusive.
This book makes me heartsick.
Cari has some major issues. She dates abusive, manipulative cheaters. And somehow, with the combination of her terrible behavior and Patrick's awful reaction... it just feels like he's turned into the very guy she always dates.
This books sucks. And I'm sad. I'm not happy they're together. This is a shit show.
I liked (past tense) Patrick. I didn't understand Cari. I hoped she would eventually make sense. But she doesn't. She's a sick sad woman who doesn't really provide much friendship to Patrick. She's unhealthy and doesn't make his life better. She drags him down. And now... he's an asshole. His choice, I know.
At first I wasn't loving it and then I hated it. Every single character in this book is absolutely awful.
Cari: Oh man guys like Patrick deserve better than me...waahh quit crying about it and be better bitch. Nah instead let me date every rich asshole I can find just to make everyone feel uncomfortable.
Patrick: Oh man I'm such a nice guy, I can't go after the one girl I like because she's my friend. Dude, grow a pair or get over it.
Connor: I treat women like crap but it's ok because they like it. And now I have enough experience to tell everyone else how they should be living their lives.
Tess: I'm gonna be mean an awkward to Declan because he broke my heart when we were younger. Get the fuck over it or remove yourself from the situation.
Declan: Freaking ditch your bitch fiance if that's what you want. Don't dick around like the world made this situation and there's nothing you can do about it.
Gosh I really didn't like this.

Blurb: It was a bet. A stupid bet. One I never should have made. One I knew, that could cost me everything...
To be honest, I didn’t even think it would work. I kissed Patrick the night we met and he couldn’t have made it clearer—he isn’t into me. Not like that. He’s funny, sweet and holy-shit-hot—entirely too good for a girl like me. He’s perfect and I’m... not. So, we’re friends. Just friends. When my life falls apart and I need a place to live, Patrick comes to my rescue, no questions asked. I know it doesn’t mean anything. It’s just one friend, helping out another. I know that... but I can’t help but want more. I can’t help but want him. It’s my friend, Tess, who points out that Patrick may be perfect, but he’s still a man. That if I push hard enough, I can make him want me. I know she’s wrong because I’ve been shot down by Patrick before and I have no desire to subject myself to it again... but what if she’s right? What if all Patrick needs is a little push?
The last thing I expected was for him to push back.
**Warning** This book contains enough hot sex to melt your panties clean off (seriously, you should probably just take them off, right now...), so if hot sex scenes o’plenty aren’t your thing, you’re in the wrong place! This 90k words romance novel is super-hot (I mean, really, really hot!!) and is intended for mature audiences only! You’ve been warned! **This full-length novel is the FIRST in a series and does end in a cliffhanger, which is resolved in book 2, CLAIMING CARI. There is no cheating and book 2 ends in HEA.**
I really wanted to like this book and it started off great. However, I'm not a fan of using others for emotional manipulation. Spoiler alert: Patrick was getting a blow job from another woman right before he finally sleeps with Cari. I just can't enjoy relationships like that.
I read this the first time a couple years ago and liked it quite a bit. On this reread I can’t even finish because the friends to lovers trope is so annoying. He just sits around twiddling his dick for 4 years while he watches her bang a loooooooooong line of other men. That’s not alpha. I’ll leave my original rating since my change of heart is only about the trope and not the writing… but if I read this blind today it would have been a DNF. 🤷🏼♀️
I knew better than to read this, so I’m going with 2 stars instead of 1. The trope here is friends to lovers and I loathe that trope. Not dissing anyone who loves it but it’s the opposite of what I look for in a romance. I’m not into unrequited love and any romance where one or both characters sit by and watch their love interest be romantically involved and date other people is the kind of angst I avoid like the plague. Great for you if you like it but it sounds like a misery fest to me.
So why did I read it? Not the cover or blurb, though both are fine. The blurb doesn’t really mention dating other people as a part of this equation. It was an ad for the book with a pesky excerpt. One day I’ll learn excerpts can’t be trusted as a form of advertisement.
Both H//h are romantically and sexually involved with other people and their relationships with these other people have critical repercussions for them throughout.
Instead of either of them talking to one another, she tries to sexually tease him into making a move and he’s so dense it takes him 6 months to get it and then he doesn’t automatically think that the girl he secretly loves is actually into him but no the girl he’s pined over for years is cruelly playing a game with him for her own amusement. Like how do you even make that leap? Why not give her the benefit of the doubt?
Then he’s pissed because he immediately thought the worst possible scenario of her and instead of exploring their mutual attraction and interest he’s mean to her and she’s so fucking pathetic she lets him do it while also trying to make him jealous.
Just fucking no.
Safety - no. Just no. After H , immediately assumes the worst of h, right as she’s heading out for a date, he gets a nasty skank to go back to their apartment-even though they agreed not bring their hookups home/ and gets a blow job from her. The h is feeling bad so she goes back home to make amends and catches the show. H still has the OW’s lipstick all over his dick and h brings him a towel to wipe it off. This asshole still has his head up his ass though so he’s not even sorry. There are other safety issues but this one is the first one and the worst in my opinion.

This book was hard to rate. Overall I enjoy the author's writing style. I loved some of the characters, the main h&H, not really that much. I wish the author had focused more on the relationship rather than the sex scenes [which seemed repetitive and overdone IMO]. Don't get me wrong, a good love scene that adds to the story is great, but this just was OTT for me. There were things I enjoyed and equally things I did not. I'll probably move on to the next in the series because book 1 ended on a very abrupt cliffhanger, and now we're left in the middle of unnecessary and dragged out drama. Yet I want to see how it works out, even though it's pretty clear, I'm invested just enough to try book 2. Also, I'm hoping the writing gets better, IIRC this is quite an earlier work for her.
I started off really enjoying this however it just went down hill 50% into the story. I absolutely hated how 180 Patrick became and how he treated cari. It honestly wasn’t sexy at all but felt more like she was being forced or rape fantasies like another commented had said. It also leaves on a big cliff hanger so you’ll need to read an additional book to even finish this story. Had such high hopes and now I’m disappointed.
This book should definitely not be read while at work or on public transport. PG 18!!! The sexual chemistry between Patrick and Cari is off the charts and not to mention their emotional connection. The cliffhanger ending had me feeling all kinds of emotions.
DNF - Was free on Kindle Unlimited and recommended, but I'm so over reading contemporary romance about people young enough to be my offspring. Fresh out of college should be categorized as New Adult. It would help me not waste my time. Noped out at 24%
I really liked this book, but gave it 3 stars instead of 4 bc of the ending.
I really loved Patrick & Cari, but I felt bored about 3/4 of the way in. I felt like much more could have been done in this book to draw the reader in!
Felt repetitive and zero character growth throughout the book. Ends on a cliffhanger that was irritating, not riveting. Felt like a desperate attempt to retain readers since the plot hadn't developed in a hundred pages or more and without the cliffhanger no one would continue the series.
Pushing Patrick was a really great read! Captn America or Pretdictiable Patrick is what Patrick has been called his whole life. He's the guy you know you can always rely on. One night in college a girl, Cari, needed a ride home. She made it obvious that she would like to repay him in a special kind of way, but Patrick's a nice guy. Fast forward three years down the road and Patrick is starting to be over the nice guy way, except he asked Cari to move in with him when she gets kicked out of her apartment.
Cari has the hots for Patrick and Patrick has the hots for Cari, but neithier one will make the first move. Cari and Patrick's friend Tess makes a bet with Cari to see if she can get Patrick to loose control and have his wicked way with her. Can Cari break Patrick down? Will Patrick finally find his inner bad boy? You'll just have to read to find out! The storyline was fantastic and I felt bad for Patrick at times because he's such a nice guy, but then you get glimpses of his inner bad boy and it makes you sweat a little. The supporting characters added color to the story line and I can't wait to read more of the Gilroy Clan series.
This One was a tough one for me to rate because I almost quit reading the book about halfway through. Plus I haven’t read the second book yet so I don’t know how everything turns out. Overall I’d probably give the book a 3.5 stars.
What I really had trouble with was just how much Patrick got hurt by Carrie. He was a great guy and he just was devastated. Besides him getting hurt so badly and her just not doing anything to fix it he immediately changes like there’s a total 180. I don’t know if I could reconcile that big of a change with what actually happened. I did manage to get through the book because I do hate to give up on reading something once I’ve started so I will probably finish the second book as well unless of course it makes me as crazy as this book did.
I’d recommend this book only if you are completely prepared for some crazy 180 attitude changes and character changes as well as two main characters I can’t seem to talk and just hurt each other continually.
Holy shit y’all. The chokehold this book has on me is UNREAL.
We got strangers who turn into friends, then roommates, then fuck buddies, then… I leave that blank because I DONT KNOW. I NEED TO PICK UP BOOK 2 IMMEDIATELY.
I gotta say Patrick? I’ve loved him since page 1. Cari took a bit more warming up to but I love them both. They’re so dumb and stubborn and the ANGST. THE PINING? THE YEARNING?
Top fucking tier yall. Top. Fucking. Tier.
I might come back and add to this after I finish book two.
Patrick and Cari are great characters. The writing is strong. The interaction is fun. The flow is easy. I love the secondary characters and their stories. Very nice reading. A few surprises that pop up are very interesting.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I'm conflicted in this. The romance or sex was quite hot and interesting but then the ending was a cliffhanger and I'm just not interested enough. Feels money grab to me.
The romance as well is quite toxic. Patrick is the classic "I'm a nice guy" but really hes a prick. Cari is just meh. Not really anything to say found her boring.
DNF @ 72% Please Patrick cry me a river, nether cari or patrick have any common sense and will not be reading any more of this soap opera especially because it takes a ANOTHER book to get there.
This is the first book I have read from this author and I can’t wait for more! The main characters need to get out of their own way so they can share the love they have for each other. Can’t wait to start the next book!
I did not expect the book to turn out this way! I was 100% shocked!!!! This was an awesome read and I cannot wait to dive into the next one! Thank you Megyn!

While I do not condone the little trick those two girls played on Patrick, I definitely appreciate it! And I love how off-the-rails poor Patrick went when he realized what Cari was doing, it was insane yet at the same time extremely amusing. And then beneath all that there were other stories developing as well as the backstory and continuing story of Cari and Patrick. Well done, looking forward to reading the entire series.
More than anything I'm annoyed with the main characters! They've both pining for each other for years but neither room has the balls to step up. So I instead she pretty much teases him for months (not closing the bedroom or bathroom door, leaving skimpy underwear around, etc) and then when he finally realizes she's doing it on purpose, he gets pissed off and they end up pretty much hate f**king each other, but then still date other people to continue to piss each other off. Grow up, take responsibility for your actions, and learn to frickin communicate!
The book ends on a cliff hanger and I'm reading the next one because it's not so bad that I can't read it. (Usually the only thing that makes me stop reading is continuous and improper grammar/punctuation) I'm 35% of the way through and so far it's still not getting better. The female main character needs serious therapy and I don't mean in the way some other books do it where she's like "cute but psycho" or something like that. She's constantly pushing away the guy she loves because she doesn't think she deserves him and she's putting herself down all the time. She's insecure self-deprecating and it's just too over-the-top and annoying. It's not something you want to read about. Even If it gets better and ends in an HEA, it's not making for a good story.
I liked this book, I wouldn't say I loved it, but I liked it. I really liked Patrick's character - even after he turned asshole but I didn't particularly like Cari - she was just okay. The way she played with Patrick for so long, I didn't love that, even if she wouldn't admit that it was because she actually had feelings for him. He didn't handle it well, lol, although I do understand him being mad.
(Spoilers here!!) Favorite part was the bar scene with Cari's ex and the baseball bat. I also really liked the interactions with Tess. The part towards the end where Patrick & Cari spend the day inside while it's raining - the pool table scene I'm like CARI IS SO STUPID wtf. lol anyway - just a few thoughts.
I thought I had a pretty good idea how this book was going to go. I was wrong. Not totally, I had a couple details right, but it didn't go how I expected. I'm already starting book 2 so we shall see how it goes!
Lots of spice in this one. Oh, and the book does end on a cliffhanger so if you're looking for a standalone or wanted to get the HEA in one book - this one isn't for you.

I simply couldn't finish this book, which is unheard of for me. There was so much potential for a very compelling story and interesting side stories but the main characters were acting like children and refusing to talk with one another, instead having angry sex. There was no romance in this book. Also the description said no cheating and there most certainly was. Very disappointing. I really wanted to read the series because the other characters were very compelling but other reviews say the rest of the books go down this same path. If you don't mind cheating and zero romance this book is great. Just not my cup of tea.
Not sure how the people in this book can call each other friends. They’re constantly playing mind games with each other and they’re all emotionally and verbally abusive.
The longer this book went on, the more ick I got from it. I only kept reading to see a resolution with Patrick and Cari, but all I got was extremely immature “adults” and an absolute brain dead cliffhanger (referring to Cari’s decision). This is high school level bullshit. Definitely not NA behavior.
Lastly, get a better editor!!! So so so so many missing words, wrong words, and misspellings. It really degraded the quality of this book.
