This is a great book to read when you can't sleep at night. Not because it is boring but because it is a series of short local newspaper columns about Maine life, easy to digest, sweetly remembered, and not some heart pounding thriller that will not ever allow you to sleep. Hughes has a talent for seeing beyond the eye-view into the heart of a matter. Sometimes humorous and always thoughtful. You will see yourself in many of these remembrances of days in the life of...
I liked the first few sections best and their descriptions of Maine and life in the state. The middle bit was a bit too moralizing and spiritual for my tastes.
There was also a comment about Indigenous cultural practices being delusional that left a sour taste in my mouth.
My husband and I took our first trip to Maine last fall..and fell in love. A bookshop along the coast had a section of local Maine authors. I picked up this book and wanted to bring a bit of Maine home with me. I have enjoyed these stories so much. I hope Lew-Ellyn keeps writing more!!
