Daniel Warren Johnson is a Chicago-based comic book writer, artist, and illustrator. He's worked on titles for most major publishers, including Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, and Image. His current series with Skybound/Image Comics is EXTREMITY, a sci-fi/fantasy title he is writing and drawing, and continues to update his webcomic Space-Mullet in his spare time.
The depth and complexity of characterization in this story is astounding. The composition is wonderful as ever, really underpinning the story, characters, and themes, which of themselves are rich and detailed. All of the characters are so compelling, and I love following their journeys, especially when some of them feel so inevitably tragic (reminds me a little of Of Mice and Men, actually). In this issue I especially enjoyed Rollo's speech and the interplay between Thea and Jerome. The contrast between Jerome's appearance in the past and the present was especially compelling as well, specifically changes in age, feeling, and most impressively, emotional/spiritual weight. Though again, the comic is very gruesome and I wouldn't recommend it to people who struggle with gore, if you're looking for a fresh, philosophical, and beautifully detailed take on a revenge story--especially if you want an extra twist with the family relations, I would highly, highly recommend this series. One of my all time favorites for sure.
