This is a modern adaptation of Pride & Prejudice, set in the Bluegrass region of Kentucky. William Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet meet under false circumstances set in motion by her sister, Lydia. A whirlwind romance ensues, complete with mistaken identities, sometimes-difficult family members, and inevitable misunderstandings.

What a delightful short story. I loved the Darcy/Lizzy interactions. Since this was a short story the storyline progressed rather quickly. There was minimal angst and it was over before I had a chance to get agitated. This was a reimagining of our P&P characters set in modern times in the state of Kentucky. We open at during Derby and Will Darcy needs a date. Only he calls the wrong number. This sets the stage for our dear couple to meet and to laugh at the misunderstanding. Part of that was also Lydia being Lydia. However, we didn’t have to deal with her very much.
Rating: PG-17: steamy, sensual, non-graphic scenes of adult themes.
In this story, Darcy’s mother is still alive as well as his grandmother. Two strong women in his life and I loved the interactions between these women and ODC. It was a testament to the man he had become. I love when a man has manners.
This story could be considered somewhat predictable and some might call it a bit syrupy, but I enjoyed the light-hearted banter and playfulness with the characters. Of course, there was the ‘fun was had by all’ picnic held at the Bennets. Mrs. Bennet and Lydia tied for first place in ‘The Most Embarrassing’ category. Lawd!!
A modern story with an unusual meet cute for Darcy and Elizabeth. Though the Bennet group is the same, the Darcy family has some very interesting additional characters.
This was the 164th book I read this year but at the time there was no listing for it on Goodreads as it is unpublished. The author very cleverly uses a word that begins with the letter "D" for each of her chapters. The story is less than 100 pages in my estimation. (It is difficult to number the unpublished books.) It is a modern story set in Kentucky.
Anne Darcy is demanding Will bring a date to Derby Day. (She wants grandchildren!) He continues a lie he told her that he was dating someone and comes up with the name "Elizabeth". He calls the Bennet Agency (Companions for the Elderly) by mistake and Lydia sets him up with her sister as she has an opening in her schedule. He did ask for someone who could pretend to be named Elizabeth. And when Lydia realizes he is looking for a date...What a joke!
So you can see where this is headed: mistaken identity and expectations on the part of his family when he does take her home. Grandmother, Mildred Darcy, however is the one who rules the roost and she demands that he bring his "girlfriend" out to the farm to meet her.
The couple falls in love quickly BUT when Will impulsively pops the big question...what else?...he gets it all wrong. Oh, this is not about wealth and connections...as you will find out if you read this short but sweet and romantic story.
And the author has a twist at the end which had me blurry eyed. Who said you're too old to find love a second time?
