This collection features the entire Araneae Nation series in chronological order and includes:
A Heart of Ice A Hint of Frost A Feast of Souls A Cast of Shadows A Time of Dying A Kiss of Venom A Breath of Winter A Veil of Secrets A Solstice of Mischief
Hailey Edwards writes about questionable applications of otherwise perfectly good magic, the transformative power of love, the family you choose for yourself, and blowing stuff up. Not necessarily all at once. That could get messy.
But I want more!!! This doesn’t feel over. What about Pascale and Lleu. What about the plague? Is it over? Are the people safe. Nope this just feels incomplete.
My mistake was reading this series in this one and done format. Unless you don't mind slow, slow reads, I wouldn't recommend it with this series.
Where this series shines is in the world building. Edward's has created a marvelous world here with a few different clans that we get to witness with their varying cultures and interconnected dependencies on one another. She's worked a series spanning plot around a legend that all the clans have knowledge of and woven it into the cultures of the clans. I think she did a fine job of that. Her play on zombies was unique and interesting for the majority of the read.
The romance worked for only two of the stories in this whole series. The rest may as well have never happened because they lacked real connection, chemistry, and failed to convince me that they'd ever take place with those characters in those scenarios.
The final book left me feeling completely unsatisfied and as though this entire story was unnecessary because, ultimately, nothing came of it. Nothing truly was resolved. It feels unfinished. But I'm seeing a pattern here because this is the second series I've read by Edward's where this has been the case. And while I enjoy her writing, I don't enjoy non endings.
It's not a bad series overall. It's unique and interesting, but the world is the focus here rather than the plot or the characters, and as such, it's not very exciting. I'd recommend reading it between something exciting to avoid the slow read fatigue.
I am a HUGE fan of Hailey Edwards' work so when I found this set on my Kindle (no telling how long it has been on there!) I knew I had to read them. So glad I did.
This collection includes 9 stories, 3 I believe are shorts. I could not put it down! The series starts with Lourdes. Her parents had just been assassinated. Their clan has no warriors, they have to hire others to defend them and she has learned that their current "protectors" are responsible for the deaths of her parents, the clan Maven and Paladin (leaders). In her attempt to find new protectors, she turns to Maven Isolde, a friend of her mother's. In return for their protection Maven Isolde requires the new Maven Lourdes to wed her son, Rhys.
I love how each book shows the interactions with many clans and how they relate to the original story of Lourdes and Rhys. I do hope we will get another book for this series one day, I too want to learn if Pascale ends up with Lleu or Edan!
Stories about several women finding their soul mates. The first is about the Mother of the second story lead character, Lourdes. The rest are stories about women related to Lourdes in some way, friends, friends or friends, women who love her brothers or husband’s brother, etc.
Heavy on the romance. If you are not a romance person this may not be for you. It isn’t harlequin romance level, but it is couples fighting attraction, failing, resisting, questioning, and realizing they are the one and only romance. Sex scenes are in the book and are not vague, but this is not porn, just well written sex for grown ups.
This is different then the Black Dog series. So do not expect the same. Totally different style, characters, and focus. Good stand alone stories compiled together.
I started with the first book in this series about two years or so ago, and just finished with the final episode, that of Marne and Asher's story, tonight. What a wonderful time I spent in the world of the Araneae, where people living in different clans have spider-like traits, some with the ability to spin fine silk, others venomous. Edwards does a marvelous job giving the clans distinct characteristics, economies, politics, religion. Each story is usually told from the perspective of a strong female lead, either a royal or a mercenary or a slave. There are strong romantic elements in each book, but that is not the sole or even the main driver of the story. Very well done, and very recommended.
I love the idea that there are two words, one constant autumn/winter and one constant spring/summer as well as the two gods. The stories flowed from one to the next seamlessly, keeping me invested from book one to the end. I love reading Bailey Edwards because she knows how to develop elaborate characters as well as she sets the groundwork for each of the books, she doesn't use the same settings, the same people aren't always in the forefront but they are kept alive in a beautiful way. I was sad to see this adventure end, now I'm ready for the next to begin!
TBH, I didnt read all the books. Just book 1. And before you read my review any further, let me just warn you that I'm going to be discussing a spoiler below.
Anyway, I read book 1. It starts with a murder of the heroine's parents. Sad, but it happens. And then I read the names of her parents. Sounded familiar. They were the names of the couple in Book 0.5! The novella. Could it be? Yes. Yes, it could. And yes, she did. If you read the collection in order (which I didn't but I did read the blurbs), you'll end up reading the death of one couple in the following book. So, HEA? I dont think so.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
.5 Was pointless, especially if you read 1 before this collection was compiled 3.5 Was complete crap. I mean, not a single redeeming quality. The arc wasn't advanced, the reactions were out of line with reality and I lost any respect for Armand and Nivolette/Astrid
The content flew by. I couldn't get enough of the characters or the plot that carried throughout every book. My only complaint is i wanted more at the end. It felt like it was not over, incomplete. I want to know the rest of the story. Pascale and Edan, Lluen, what happens with the Necrita? Please have mercy on us and continue the story.
I thought I read them all but when I seen the complete set I chose to reread them to make sure. I'm glad I did i missed a few here and there. Now that I have read the complete series I have got to say. Wow what a ride. Nothing got done and not a lot of sleep was had . From the first page til the last absolutely amazing .
I loved all the stories and how the intertwined with one another. Basically 1 couple per book but together as a whole. I loved all the personalities of every character and was also left wanting more whenever I finished a book. I will always be an avid fan of Hailey Edwards.
Was this really just another world created by Hailey?! It felt so real, the characters, the clans, the struggles. We are thrown into each Clan, days/weeks within each other dealing with the same yellow plague. Each book Brings laughter, sadness, and fierce dedication to everything surrounding it! The betrayals are gut wrenching, as well as the loyalty.
I loved all the stories in this series and the characters were so real. However, now that I have finished reading it, I want so much more. There are just too many unanswered questions in my mind. They are all wonderful and the theme throughout was intriguing, so I can't fault them in any way. I just always want more.
Great books. Good characters that were well thought out. Great world building throughout. Loved the plot of the books. Lots of drama and action. The books kept me entertained and wanting more which kept me flipping pages. I loved reading this author and highly recommend this collection. I’ll look for more of this author in the future.
Interesting stories, well linked. Enjoyed them all. The story is made complete through each hero/ heroine finding a mate. Interesting spider characteristics and the veil separation.
In spite of the hard to pronounce native names, the collection ended too soon for me....I wanted more and am looking forward to reading the next selection I can find.
(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I completely change my mind on a series, so want to change my scoring down a lot)
How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author) 4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author). 3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series) or 3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)
All of the above scores means I would recommend them! - 2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.) 1* = Disliked
Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-) ------------
