Marian Keyes (born 10 September 1963) is an Irish novelist and non-fiction writer, best known for her work in women's literature. She is an Irish Book Awards winner. Over 22 million copies of her novels have been sold worldwide and her books have been translated into 32 languages. She became known worldwide for Watermelon, Lucy Sullivan is Getting Married, and This Charming Man, with themes including domestic violence and alcoholism.
Laugh out loud funny throughout, really cheered me up in places, whilst still being a collection of her most intimate moments in the late 90s / early 00s. Touches on alcoholism, loneliness, mental health, christmas, jobs, work, shoes, holidays, familys, shoes and just everything Marianne Keyes. If you’re a fan, you’ll spot some elements of her life that actually crop up in her novels too. Fabulous.
Under the Duvet is a collection of short essays and stories where Marian Keyes shares snippets of her own life, always with her trademark humor.
Because the pieces are quite short, the audiobook format demands full attention: if you drift off for a second, you might lose the thread of the story. Still, it’s a charming and entertaining listen, full of that self-deprecating humor that makes Keyes feel like a friend chatting on the couch.
Even though some of the stories are a bit dated, that doesn’t take away from their warmth or appeal. They offer a candid, funny, and heartfelt look at everyday life, writing, relationships, and the ups and downs we all go through. A light, witty, and human audiobook.
Really enjoyed listening to Marian Keyes read this. I love her fiction, but also enjoy seeing her videos etc on social media and it was good to hear more about how she thinks.
One day I will learn to read blurb more carefully. Maybe. I love Marian Keyes and so I bought this without thought when it came up as an audible daily deal, assuming it was a novel. It is not a novel, it is an essay collection. It is written in the light, charming way that her novels are written, and possibly enhanced by her beautiful accent reading it to me. It was perfectly enjoyable company, but not exactly full of substance.
The main thing I took from it is how much her life experiences have been the canvas for her work. You could almost imagine the characters from her books walking through the scenes she creates in this collection. To me she has a distinct writing style, and it was present here. So I did enjoy this, but next time I'll make sure I get a novel.
