I hated the heroine. She was bickering and fighting with the hero nonstop. She was cold and a shrew. I was so tired of her attitude. Epilogue was lame. No pregnancy or kids. Slow, boring book! Not a fan of this author. :(
His Mistress by Blackmail by Maya Blake is a passionate romance that starts with a hero out for revenge but ends with him falling in love with a beautiful and courageous dancer.
When security guard Benjamin Woods steals a precious heirloom from casino magnate Xandro Christofides, Xandro’s only link to the whereabouts of the thief is through his sister, aspiring dancer Sage Woods. She won’t give him any information about her brother though, so he has to resort to more nefarious means.
Sage is hoping to get a position with the Hunter Dance Company and when she’s chosen to compete in an audition on a luxurious Greek Island, it almost seems too good to be true. And then she finds out the man who has bought the company is none other than the one trying to find her brother. Xandro makes it clear that she won’t be leaving his side until her brother returns his belongings. Blackmailed into playing the part of his current partner, Sage soon finds that pretending gets more difficult as she finds herself attracted to Xandro – and the feeling is mutual. Will Xandro’s plan for revenge be thwarted by true love?
So he blackmails her. Manipulates her using her love and concern for her brother, who is the only real family in her life. Takes control of her livelihood so she can't be financially independent without him. Tells her what to wear. What to do. Where she's going to live and when she's going to touch him. At one point, he even takes her phone and her clothes so she has to wear what he's given her and can't have access to the outside world. In what world is this not abusive?
"For starters," he also says at one point, "you need to not shrink away when I come near you."
"I don't like my personal space invaded," she responds, totally reasonably.
"Brace yourself," he says, "because I intend to invade more than just your personal space."
Put this conversation in the context that she's basically kidnapped. She can't leave without risking her livelihood and the safety of her family and possibly even herself, not to mention that she's actually geographically isolated on an island for part of the novel. Then you get the picture.
There's also the moment when they're talking and he takes the sunglasses right off her face, saying people should look each other in the eyes when they talk. At another point, he offers her a piece of shrimp off his plate and she says no thank you. "Your lover is offering you a morsel from his plate," he says. "Are you going to refuse me?" Maybe she just doesn't like shrimp, buddy. Stop gaslighting her over meaningless things. At one point, she's rehearsing, since she's a professional dancer and has been dancing for years. "At the risk of getting my head bitten off, you'll wear yourself out if you don't slow down," he says, in one of his many epic mansplaining moments. Like, just trust her that she knows how to train. She's not telling you how to run your hotel casinos or whatever.
But no, the next line is: "Self conscious of the mild sheen of sweat filming her body, she retreated to grab a towel."
!!
I love category romance and suspension of disbelief, and even the alpha hero trope, but this is too much. It's 2019. Can we stop telling stories like this already?

Alexandro Christofides is angry, he has been robbed and the jewelry stolen has significant meaning to him. It means so much that he will use anything in his power to bring the person that took it down. Trying out for a part in a dance company has been Sage Woods dream. Having suffered so many times in her life between parents that did not believe in her talent and being bullied by other dancers, to finally have the chance to succeed is all she wants. What she hasn't figured on was the fact that the brother who was always behind her has stolen from Alexandro Christofides. The wrath of the greek will be taken out on Sage as he forces her to be with him in a fake relationship to try to get her brother to surface. What happens from here is an amazing story of two people who's past has made them as they are now, and finding that what has always been missing in their life is right in front of them. What starts out as blackmail ends up with a HEA. absolutely loved this story a book for the keeper shelf.
Alexandros Christofides will stop at nothing to get back the ruby necklace stolen by Ben Woods. Finding a weakness through Ben's loove for his sister, Sage, would be the way to bring him to heel and get his item back. But then he meets her. And even though he is blackmailing her in to being with him until Ben is caught, he finds he needs her more than the past.
Sage Woods loves her brother. Despite his shortcomings, he was the only one in the family to support her desire to be a dancer. Being blackmailed by Xandro who is holding not just her estranged parents life in his hands, but her dreams of being a dancer in the as well. And the more time she spends with him. the less it feels like being held hostage, and more like a heart calling for another.
A bit long and slow. Hard to get past the anger and get to the real story.
The first rule of blackmail? Always stay in control Ruthless (Worldwide Hotelier) Alexandros Christofides will stop at nothing to recover a precious family ruby heirloom necklace-including using delectable (dancer) Sage Woods as bait! Made to leave their homeland in the cloak of night, falling into the wrong crowd, but one constant that made his mother happy and he means to get it back from her brother Ben. But his plan to blackmail her into compliance unravels when he discovers just how quickly their attraction ignites! Now Xandro's in danger of forgetting his own rules...because in this game of seduction there can only be one winner...
I do love a crazy sauce romance plot, and this one has it in buckets. The hero has an heirloom stolen, and he hunts down the only connection to the thief - the thief's sister. He basically railroads the heroine via purchasing the dance company she works for, and she pushes back. It has great tension between the hero and heroine, and is a quick hot read.
Maya Blake is a hit and miss for me. Unfortunately this was a miss. Two thirds of the book was frankly quite boring, and the last 3rd was just okay. The heroine was not likeable, the hero was marginally better. A very average book.
I read this book awhile ago, bu I remember the premise of trying to flush the heroine's brother out by the hero blackmailing her beccause her brother stole from him. Passion ignites and the rest makes for a good passionate story.
I love this book !!! The theme ( blackmail ) is one that I really enjoy in a romance book. The characters fit the plot just right. Would highly recommend it !!!
Xandros would be a great villain because he is ruthless. I didn't buy into the love story at all; more like Stockholm syndrome than actual love. I miss the old Harlequin romance stories.
"Blake's story is paced nicely, and her dialogue is skillful. She does a particularly good job depicting Sage's initial reluctance to get involved with Alexandros and then her eventual fall for him. Alexandros, for all his domineering power, still comes across as a sympathetic character" (4 stars @ RT Book Reviews).
