When Winston Churchill died, I was in high school and remember the funeral on television. Because I was born after WWII, I didn't know much about this man. However, over the years, I continue to bump into his name and some of his achievements. So I was delighted to read his story. The first thing out of the box, I found out Churchill won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1953.
I was surprised to see that Churchill's mental health was treated so early in the book. As a licensed professional counselor, I doubt that he could have done so much in his life if he were bipolar. However, many people learn how to thrive in spite of having Attention-Deficit Disorder or clinical depression. They learn to work very hard in the periods between the depressive states.
It is interesting that Churchill realized in India that he thrived on chaos. That's a useful skill to have for a leader. From reading this, it is obvious that Churchill wasn't right all the time and he seemed to have made some rather glaring errors in judgment. For that, Winston was sent into the 'wilderness,' (out of the government). During WWII, it is a good thing that Churchill didn't need much sleep and he thrived on chaos because he didn't get much of one and plenty of the other.
Churchill was the mediator between Stalin and FDR. It is quite a comment on Winston's longevity, the fact that he was the only member of parliament to get elected during Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth's reigns. Winston had a 4-day funeral; Queen Elizabeth ordered his body to lie in Westminster Hall for 3 days and 350 million people watched his funeral on television. Even for Americans, Churchill's voice is easily recognized. This was a fascinating story of a unique man.
Wonderful little overview of one of if not the greatest politician to have ever lived. Presents Churchill in a positive light and gives him credit where credit is do. If you have never studied the leaders of WWII, hopefully this quick read will encourage you to find out more about the three leaders of the Allies. While Winston is bigger than life, this book shows his humanity also. Highly recommend this book for all.

Winston Churchill was more than a military and government leader,
In 1953, he won the Nobel Prize for Literature for his “mastery of historical and biographical description as well as for brilliant oratory in defending exalted human values.”
Churchill was a husband, a father, a painter, and a historian, among Even when Churchill was touring France’s Maginot Line in 1939, he still managed to paint with his friends near Dreux.
Churchill was responsible for a large part in the development of the tank, as well, and in 1915, he created the Landships Committee, which designed and produced the first British tanks.
He served as the First Lord of the Admiralty, and in this position, he encouraged modernity in the British Navy, pushing new warships to use oil instead of coal engines, as well as promoting military aircraft and setting up the Royal Navy Air Churchill returned the gold standard to Great Britain, which led to deflation, unemployment, and the miner’s strike.
Later, Churchill noted that reinstating the gold standard was the worst mistake he ever made, as it created negative economic and social effects, the largest downside of which fell upon the coal industry that was already suffering because of the general switch to oil as fuel.
Before the period known as the “Battle of Britain,” Churchill said, “… we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender.”
In regard to the Allied victory at the Second Battle of El Alamein, Churchill said, “This is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.”
During the meeting between Churchill and Stalin, Churchill said, “Let us settle about our affairs in the Balkans. Your armies are in Rumania and Bulgaria. We have interests, missions, and agents there. Don’t let us get cross-purposes in small ways. So far as Great Britain and Russia are concerned, how would it do for you to have ninety percent predominance in Romania, for us to have ninety percent of the say in Greece and go fifty-fifty about Yugoslavia?[145] Stalin agreed to the proposal, but five years later, the Soviet Union denied his acceptance of the “imperialist proposal.”
A well done Biography of one of the greatest influential leaders of the 20th century I was especially impressed with the details of Churchill's less than stellar political misfires , opinions and policies in his youth and later life yet one cannot imagine anyone else leading England in WW2 a prime example of being not really finding your place in life and then suddenly at the right place at the time, and then unfortunately no longer really being needed because it's a different world and your methods and approaches are no longer viable great reading
Winston Churchill was one of the “big three,”along with President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Stalin. He had a long list of accomplishments - he led Great Britain into victory over Nazi Germany in World War II and served as Prime Minister.
His list of accomplishments are commendable. The book also writes about the flaws in his character. He had racist views referring to people of color as savages and saying that they were not as capable as white people.
I enjoyed the book - it was concise, thorough and interesting.
While yes, I do like reading history, for some reason contemporary history was never part of what I like to read. However, this one actually surprised me. Once I started reading I did not want to put it down and was actually wishing it had been longer. Go figure! Anyway, I highly recommend this to everyone. Enjoy!
A fair account of the contributions Sir Winston Churchill provided in leading the United Kingdom and Allies efforts to counter German Nazism as it overtook many parts of Europe during World War II. I enjoyed this short read since it refreshed my memory of Churchill’s early life, his leadership as a prime minister and later as world statesman.
For a man who served his country got 70 years, and did so through multiple monarchs, wars and technological changes, this short biography of Winston Churchill will give the reader insights into the man, the statesman and the soldier-author. A fascinating historical personage, the biography gives a high level overview of this amazing man. A good read.
A fairly typical bio from this series. Fairly brief and easy to read. Hits the high spots but that's pretty much it. I would just use this as a intro and get into it deeper if the reader has more interest. Though I did read a few things about WC that I did not know about before. I highly recommend it for beginning readers or those who don't want or need a more detailed bio.
So I’m too young to know this history, but I was eager to read about the man, the myth and the legend! His earlier years were more interesting to me as he was a writer, gardener, builder, father and artist! The war years were interesting but boring to me. Obviously it wasn’t boring for the people who were there to witness it all first hand.
Everyone should read this short overview of this great man. History should not be forgotten Great overview to ensure we will remember them and appreciate the sacrifice made during ww2
A great book, that catches and describes the essence of Winston Churchill. I do remember his funeral. Thank you for putting this book together. In the world we live in today, it's hard to find true honorable me.
Churchill had a long career but this gives a concise overview of his career. However, it does not provide much on his family life. A fairly quick read for someone wanting a synopsis of Churchill.
This book about is a brief and concise account of the life of Winston Churchill. It does not beat around the bush whatsoever. Although, I'm pretty sure there is more to Winston Churchill's life than what is accounted in this book. All the same, it is a good read!
I'm not a big history buff however I enjoyed this very much. Churchill was a great leader and did a lot in his life. He was also very human. Good read.
