I had the pleasure of attending an event at which Hosanna performed various spoken word pieces back in 2013. Ever since then, I've been following her on social media and I was ecstatic when I found out that she would be releasing a book this year. This is an amazing book that I would highly recommend to anyone, whether you've listened to her spoken word poetry or not. Her newest piece "I Have A New Name" has been instrumental in this season of my life. Her authentic writing style and honest love for Jesus are so refreshing and motivating. I'm so glad that I've gotten to read this book and learn more about her story along with the amazing truths that she eloquently highlights from the gospel.

This book is practical and down to earth with spiritual truths. It is simple to understand and to apply. I enjoyed this book for the relational touch that the author contributes. I liked that it was formatted to write notes in.

I had the opportunity to hear Hosanna Poetry in person this past year while at a conference, and what a dynamic ministry she has! She performed an original poetry monologue on stage about our identity in Christ entitled “I Have A New Name” which can be found on YouTube and on her website. I recommend that everyone listen to it!
In this book, she takes us through our old names - things we think about ourselves from shame, from our past, and from what others have told us about who we are - and then presents us with what the Bible says about our new names. These new names are the names God calls us when we are made new creatures in Him through salvation in Christ and are mentioned in the Bible.
She talks about two people in the Bible who God renamed: Jacob to Israel and Simon to Peter. She explains the names they used to answer to and how God changed their hearts and gave them new names to answer to. Both men left their pasts behind and followed Christ from then on.
Some things I liked about this book are the questions she asks at the end to get us thinking about how we think about ourselves, what we tell ourselves, and how our experiences have shaped who we are and what names we actually answer to in our minds and out in the world.
Three things gave me pause, however. I have done some reading about Bible translations and how some Bible translations out there are not as accurate and do not have scholarly interpretations behind them. Some have been interpreted by artists and not Bible scholars. I like total accuracy when it comes to biblical translations. When an author changes Bible translations within the book to find the words that best fit what she is trying to say, I do take issue with that.
Second, Ephesians 1:4, 5 says, “even as He chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love, he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will.” There were at least three places where Hosanna says that we must choose God, but Scripture teaches that He chooses us.
Third, she mentions Steven Furtick and Lisa Bevere, two people I don’t agree with theologically and believe to be false teachers. Steven Furtick scares me. I run when I hear his name. These two mentions caused me to speed read through the rest of the book because he (Furtick), mostly, instantly loses credibility with me. I like that she mentioned C.S. Lewis later in the book. His “last chapter,” so to speak, has already been written. With living people, they can still screw up.
I thank Hosanna for writing this book and for how honest and compassionate she is throughout the book. She has put her personal pain on display and shows a vulnerability both on stage and in what she writes that is rare in today’s world. She is an example of someone who has allowed God to take her and all her past pain and failings and use her to show His love to other people every day. She is kind, humble, and relatable, and I wish her all the best in her life and in her ministry.
I do recommend this book.
