Meet Violette, a curious 12-year-old girl who travels the world with the Cirque de la Lune--the Circus of the Moon, where her mother is the human cannonball and her father is the insect trainer!
Sometimes she would give anything to have a normal life, parents with boring jobs, and a real house. But her life is different! In Paris, Violette meets Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, a funny and eccentric painter who shows her how to appriciate all the joys of being different!
"Whimsical, adventurous, and fun." - Midwest Book Review
Teresa Radice is an Italian comics writer, born in Milan in 1975. In 2002 Radice started working for the Italian Disney magazine Topolino. For almost twenty years she scripted comics featuring such characters as Mickey, Donald, Scrooge, Goofy. Since 2004 Radice has been involved in an artistic partnership with her husband, illustrator Stefano Turconi, also a prolific Italian Disney cartoonist. Since 2013 Radice and Turconi have published a number of graphic novels, which have received praises in Italy and France. Among their works available in English there are Violette Around the World (Viola Giramondo, Tunué 2013), the Forbidden Harbour (il Porto Proibito, BAO Publishing 2015), Tosca (Dargaud 2017).
Violette is part of a family working at a circus during the time of Toulouse-Latrec. They are currently in Paris and Violette has been going to school during their time in the city.
The book is a surreal and bright display of color and sheer joy. This was a lot of fun to read with fantastic characters of the circus and the city dazzles on these pages. Everything is alive with energy and zest here. It's a place you want to jump in the pages and visit.
I think this is a great new edition to middle grade graphic novels.
Extremely pleasant, delightful illustrations, a story that is optimal for the sub-12 crowd. Violette roams Paris with her circus friends and Toulouse-Lautrec (no booze or prostitutes here, fortunately). There's not much more to it than that, but it's all perfectly nice.
lovely story, great art work. Lots of life lessons in this one. Main take away is you can only be you and no one else. " Everyone should march to the sound of their own music! Only then can we really be ourselves and be able to express our own beauty!"
Didn’t finish - even though I liked the start of the story, the drawing style for some of the POC characters was offensive and I knew I wouldn’t be hand selling or adding it to any recommend lists on that alone.
Great introduction to the series. The art is so gorgeous! The diverse of ethnicity in the circus yet they came together like a big family just warmed my heart.
A beautiful story with gorgeous illustrations, it tells the tale of Violette whose mother and father both work at a circus. Violette loves her life in the Cirque de la Lune but sometimes wishes that her life is "normal" until she meets a painter who teaches her to appreciate and love all the people and things that make her life beautiful and unique. This is a wonderful book for readers of all ages.
Free spirited girl sent home from school finds a famous artists sketch book. Great concept to introduce the flawed artist. Set in the late 1800s around a community of circus performers. However there were some problematic racial stereotypes in the story and illustrations.
