Clump, A Changeling's Story

Rate this book
A race of monsters by day and ferocious timber wolves by night, the Windigos who live in the Red Canyon are formidable creatures. They survive by eating the flesh of the living but, oddly enough, there is one amongst them who cannot abide the taste of meat on his lips. His name is Clump and he's the chief's only son. Each night and under the cover of darkness he sneaks away to feed upon a multitude of wild berries and fruits. No one knows his terrible secret but his father, Serpen, is growing suspicious. Then one day, the Nonhawks, a vile species that likes to murder and maim, capture one of the tribe members, brutally disfiguring another. Serpen organises a group of hunters to help save Horith, the son of his trusted advisor, from the clutches of the Nonhawk tyrant, King Forusian. After the pack makes its way inside the castle, events spiral out of control which lead to Clump being accused of abandoning his father and leaving him to die. Sentenced to death, Clump's life changes forever when he is forced to flee his village. He soon embarks upon a magical journey where he will strike an unlikely deal with a witch, be saved by a Plainwalker and find a friend in an Elvin princess. Be prepared! This is a touching story of unlikely friendships, unexpected love and the most deadliest of betrayals.

Lynette was born in London but raised in Burnley, Lancashire. From the tender age of five she was raised by her grandmother who gave her books in which to help keep her quiet. However, Lynette found she had quite a passion for reading and subsequently began writing once she started school.

Whilst at junior school Lynette's teacher was so impressed with her writing skills that her stories were read out to her classmates. Due to family commitments Lynette was unable to take her writing further and joined the Forces instead. Lynette married a soldier and when her children came along she had little time to write but jotted down a few tales for her boys to read at bedtime.

Lynette's husband was so impressed with her ability to capture people's imaginations that he encouraged her love of writing by buying her a laptop in the hope she would write something a little more substantial. So with a great deal of encouragement and a push in the right direction her first novel Sinners of Magic was born.

Lynette decided her first novel would be something magical and her inspiration came from writers from her childhood such as Enid Blyton. ‘The Faraway Tree’ and ‘The Wishing Chair’ were her first real taste of fantasy and later on in life J.K. Rowling's Potter series proved to her that magic was still alive in peoples hearts. Her second novel, Betrayers of Magic is currently available on kindle and will be out in paperback by May 2013. Lynette currently lives near Grimsby and works part-time for the NHS.

Synopsis:

The Windigos of the Red Canyon are formidable, dangerous creatures. They are monsters by day and timber wolves by night. They survive on flesh and especially enjoy the flesh of immortals. Then there’s Clump. Clump is the son of his tribe’s chief, Serpen, and Clump is the kid who doesn’t fit in. Clump is the Red Canyon’s only vegetarian Windigo.

After striking a bargin with a witch to save a member of the tribe, Clump is accused of treason by his father and forced to flee the village. He survives with the aid of a Plainwlaker. Then the witch needs him to help an Elvin princess to release the Fourth Mage.

Clump and his friends find unexpected friendships and love in unlikely places, while facing the wrath of Serpen’s vengeance.

Review:

Lynette Creswell has set the story in the world of her Magic Trilogy. It is a story of monsters told through from the monsters’ point of view. The hero of the story is Clump, a Windigo who was cursed at birth to be sickened by the taste of meat. Upon being accused of treason by his father, Clump is sent on a quest to help the Elvin princess Crystal. The action scenes are sharp and brief. The story line holds together very well, though it drags at times. The dialog seemed geared more to a younger audience. Still, it is a heart warming tale of friendship, love, and loyalty.

I absolutely loved this book. It is the story of Clump a shape shifter. It is action packed, mystical and a great adventure too. It very definitely belongs to the genre - fantasy. Clump belongs to the race called Windigos. I don't like spoilers so will do my best not go into details. Anyone wanting to know more will find lots among the reviews on Amazon. Sufficient to say Clump is the son of the chief but is born different to the rest of his race. There is magic, a witch, an elven princess, goblins, wyverns and other unusual life forms. There is hatred and love, evil and good, brutality and tenderness, loyalty and betrayal and unusual friendships. It is also beautifully written, imaginative and descriptive. Highly recommended if you enjoy fantasy.

Lynette Creswell did a good job of building Clump's world. The story is well written and well edited. It is a modern day folktale.

Clump was a likeable character, as were most. Serpen, his father, was well written as a sympathetic villain. What I liked most of all about Clump's story is that he's struggling with being different--and the stakes are high, so he keeps his difference hidden as long as possible.

Once it's known, he has to live with the reactions of the other members of his pack. I think it's a timely story--and an important one for this day and age.

I loved this book, love me some Clump! This is a well written book about a character from the authors' fantasy trilogy which is going to be my next read. The characters are well written and each one is fully formed in his/her own right even the irritating ones (there are one or two) which just adds to the story. I love the fact that this book has a little bit of everything that goes to make a good fantasy read without losing sight of the trials and tribulations of the main character. If every action has an equal and opposite reaction then Clump is in the middle of dilemma that is not of his making and he's not as secure in his own skin as one would expect. The reason/s for this become clear as the story progresses and how he copes just adds to the suspense. I really enjoyed this book and honestly can't wait to find out where Lynette Creswell's pen will take her next.

I found this book to be a very entertaining read. The story centers around a wendigo named Clump, which I must admit, I thought was a very strange name, but you really come to love him. He's born into a rather brutal world, but is a compassionate creature. I don't want to give away any spoilers, but he is forced into some adventures, but does eventually find his family again and paves the way for a better life for his entire village. Great story, and congratulations to Ms. Creswell.

The odd monster in us all

A young adult novel with fast paced action flying and splashing and fighting above and below a vast fantasy world, created in several other sequels I believe. This book is from the unique perspective of a monster, Clump. For their desire for flesh, his breed are almost vanquished, surviving in a desert canyon awaiting an unsure fate.

I really enjoyed the pace of this book. The story was interesting and I found all of the characters to be intruiging. I'm looking forward to reading the other Lynette Creswell books that I have and hope they follow a similar pace - I love fantasy books but sometimes there is just too much "filler" and I lose interest.

A very interesting story. The premises that the story is built on is very interesting. Although I was unsure about this book at first, I am looking forward to reading the next one.
