Winning the Battle for the Night: God's Plan for Sleep, Dreams and Revelation

Rate this book
Win the Battle for God's Plan for Rest, Rejuvenation, and RevelationIn our fast-paced world, we see sleep as "wasted time," or else we lie awake as anxiety, fear, or distractions run through our minds. That was never God's intent for the night. Without realizing it, we've handed this sacred time over to the enemy. With warmth, compassion, and keen biblical insight, counselor and speaker Faith Blatchford reveals that it's during this precious time that God imparts everything necessary for us to be equipped for the day. Without peaceful sleep at night, we are robbed mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually of the resources we need. God created the night and the dark--and he called it good. He dwells in it. The dark does not belong to the devil, so don't let the enemy steal it from you. Here are the tools you need to take back your night, to encounter the God of rest, and to sleep peacefully the whole night through.Includes a chapter on how to help your children overcome nightmares and fear of the dark.

I hate writing these type of reviews as I'm forced to do with this book. When I ordered this book, I thought I was going to be reading about the importance of sleep, insomnia, etc.. I was not expecting a book on dreams. Yes, dreams are important, and I'm a firm believer that God makes revelations to people through dreams. I also believe that some dreams are prophetic. However, is a book really necessary on this subject?

99% of the book is the author referring the reader to pray, which is the reason to my asking about this book being necessary because God will reveal himself to whomever He wants through dreams, visions or no dreams at all. Not every believer has dreams with meanings. To make such a claim is to play with fire. We have to be very careful and ask for spiritual discernment when it comes to spiritual matters as dreams.

The author makes it seem as though, you can manipulate your way into having God give you dreams, that's just not how God works! Yes, God has given dreams with meanings to many, many Christians, but if you haven't had any, don't try to force yourself to follow a process in order to dream.

From an early age, God has given me prophetic dreams pretty much about anything you can think of, from revealing secret sins to dreams about the Tribulation and the future. I did nothing to "cause" those dreams, God simply used this avenue to speak to me. The amount of sleep you have has nothing to do with dreaming. I have taken quick half hour naps and have dreams with meanings revealed to me in that short time.

If you have zero knowledge about dreaming and/or want to have dreams, I recommend you pray. There's nothing in this book that can help you understand the subject any better. Have questions on ANY spiritual matter, go to the Source, not a human being. Man makes mistakes and can be wrong, but God never is.

I received a copy of this book from Chosen in exchange for an honest review. The opinions expressed here are entirely my own.

I really wanted to love this book but it was VERY elementary. It's possible that I feel this way because these are truths I feel like most people know, but it doesn't seem very deep or profound. The last two chapters have some good nuggets but overall I was mostly disappointed. I know this author is powerfully anointed to set captives free and I was hoping for more from this book.

[Note:  This book was provided free of charge by Chosen Books.  All thoughts and opinions are my own.]

As someone whose troubles with sleep are well documented [1], this book is both a risk and an opportunity.  The author talks about her own longtime struggles with sleep and her own deep interest in divine and demonic influence on sleep, and how one feels about this book depends on a variety of elements.  Do you believe that God still communicates with believers through dreams, and that dreams sometimes contain warnings that are often ignored, to the peril of those who had been given prophetic dreams and did not take them seriously?  Do you believe that there is a demonic influence in many nightmares, as the author specifies this as meaning night demon numerous times in this book?  If you believe both of these things, this book will likely contain much of interest and value for you.  If you believe neither of these two, this book will be at best a reminder of various human factors--PTSD, anxiety, high levels of technology use, obesity, sleep apnea, and so on--that negatively affect sleep, many of which I am sadly all too familiar with.

This book was a short one--I read it as an ePub and it only came to 113 pages there, filled with a variety of chapters organized in a topical fashion.  Throughout the book we find out that the author was born into a mainstream Christian background and found little encouragement or insight from her religious background concerning dreams.  She relays various stories about the dreams of Abraham Lincoln and victims of the Holocaust who were given what appeared to be prophetic dreams.  The author's charismatic background accounts for the extreme interest in the spirit world here, which may put off some readers, both in its references to the Holy Spirit as well as its references to the demonic world.  Despite the author's own frank confession of her longtime struggle with bad sleep, there is a certain "blame the victim" approach to poor sleep here, where people are blamed for having their sleep harmed because they have been deceived by satanic lies, even where they are not to blame in terms of diet and exercise and going to bed earlier for their sleep problems in other ways.

Even so, although there was much that could offend, overall I found I was satisfied with the book's approach.  The author's tough approach to the reader was balanced by her own sincerity, and the author's depth of study into the problem of sleep for believers is obvious to anyone who has shared her troubles and her approach to them.  As someone who has strong beliefs about both the malign nature of a third of the spirit world as well as the way that dreams are an aspect of divine communication, I found much to agree with concerning the author's perspective, despite some differences.  Likewise, the author's comments about PTSD and the responsibility of parents for the dream life of their children was also something I could agree with and wholeheartedly endorse.  If there was much in this book that reminds me that a great deal of the unpleasant nature of my own sleep is my responsibility, it was comforting to know that my horrific sleep life is not a problem I have alone, and there is considerable value in that realization.  For those readers who share my struggle and the author's, then, this book provides both comfort as well as a prod to take action.

The subtitle of this book – God’s Plan for Sleep, Dreams and Revelation – really does give guidance as to what this book is about. I loved it because I often have God dreams and occasionally I have visions which until I read this book I would probably only have ever told my closest friends, just in case anyone else thought I was a little bit crazy.

I really connected with what Faith had to say about the importance of God’s gift of sleep especially that good quality sleep enhances creativity, memory and learning.

Also what she shared about darkness was like revelation to me although once you know, it seems so obvious!

She says,

“The truth about the darkness is revealed in Genesis 1:1-5. It was from darkness that God began the work of creation. ‘In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.’ Picture this scene, although it is difficult to picture because it was dark! But God was there, in the darkness. Imagine you are alone in the middle of a pitch-black desert – no stars, no moon and no streetlights, just blackness. Suddenly, you hear a voice saying, ‘Light be!’ You did not know anyone was there because you could not see Him, but He was there all the time, in the dark. And even more astounding, He could control the darkness because He controlled the light.”

There’s so much more to this but I know that when people are afraid of the dark they haven’t realised that God is with them in the dark as well as the light. I just love this.

So my takeaways from this book are:
1. to live in the knowledge that Father God is with me everywhere – in the light and in the dark;
2. that He has got amazing things to share with me as I sleep so I need to sleep more;
3. that it’s the enemy who is trying to steal my sleep and steal the treasures God has for me.

If you've ever wondered does God talk to us through dreams and visions, this is the book for you. It's Non-Fiction. In Faith Blatchford's book, we are reminded of the dreams in the Bible. For example, Abraham's dream is one among five. Impressionable is the thoughts about why God gave us sleep. Our sleep is His gift. It is exciting to think about God's timetable. Does He live by one? Does He need rest? These types of questions are answered in "Winning the Battle for the Night: God's Plan for Sleep, Dreams and Revelation."

After reading this simple and thorough book, the mind opens to another way God might choose to show solutions to our problems and give guidance, etc. Knowing God is aware of us as we sleep could possibly take away sleep anxieties. After all, He is our Protector. The One who never grows tired, and the One who never leaves us.

It is helpful to read closely the scriptures given in the chapters. I had questions about some scriptures. I felt the author might have become so zealous about this subject that she forced scriptures to meet her conclusions. Nevertheless, I've never read a better book on the subject. I'm one of those people who have never paid much attention to dreams and their meanings. The author's words have made me more open to the fact that God is the same, today and forever. Therefore, it is possible that He talks to us through dreams and visions. There is a chapter for parents too. All parents know that children can fight sleep or suffer nightmares. Swaying their minds to nap time or bed time takes creativity and prayer.

Winning the Battle for the Night

God's Plan for Sleep, Dreams and Revelation

I am voluntarily reviewing a copy of Winning the Battle For the Night through Chosen Books and Netgalley:

In this book the author points out that in this day and age sleep is underrated. In this day and age we are often overworked leading to insomnia, fatigue and other sleep issues. This book reminds us that our body was designed for sleep that a decent amount of sleep and good quality sleep can give us a longer lifespan.

We are reminded that many things can become sleep robbers, but the author points out too that we are not defenseless to the enemy's tactics of trying to rob us of sleep. We are reminded too that unforgiveness of others and ourselves can rob us of sleep so we need to forgive.

This book encourages us too to get the Children in the habit of turning off electronics, and getting sleep and encouraging them to say goodbye to the boogeyman.

I give Winning the Battle of the Night five out of five stars.

Happy Reading!

It does seem that in Christian circles there is always a book that you are told you must-read or even one everyone should read so I'm not going to say it. However if you want a book about sleep, or suffer from insomnia, or just want advice on how to handle dreams this is a excellent book to read and is very uplifting which is not always the case with books on this subject. Faith is an amazing Lady with a fantastic name that is clear to see in her character, her writing as well as her name. I do recommend this book and not just for understanding of dreams but as the title says for a deeper understanding of the night a and a insight into the truth of darkness and sleep or lack of it that many of us have or do experience. The real benefit I had was a insight into the facts on sleep that is more than worth while reading.
I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in return for a honest review.

This book is all about sleep and God's plan for it. Many people don't get enough sleep. God's plan for sleep is essential for rest and rejuvenation. A good sleep schedule causes improvements in all parts of life and makes it easier to focus on God and all He has in store for us

The author of this book covers many topics including sleep problems, sleep solutions, and even Biblical stories of messages from God. Each chapter of this book ends with an inspiring prayer to encourage your own life.

People who have insomnia or have an interest in God's plan for sleep and dreams will be interested in reading this. Thank you so much to the author and publisher for the chance to read and review this book!

Great Book

This is a fantastic book especially for those who are not yet aware of God's promises regarding sleep in scripture. However for me - I do wish there was more information on dealing with insomnia in different stages of life, rather than fear of the dark.

I discovered some fresh insights and ideas about sleep and how God designed it as a natural part of our human existence. It was easy to read, without getting into any in-depth jargon or super complicated scientific concepts.

Winning The Battle For The Night by Faith Blatchford is a great resource for Christians on sleep and dreaming. I mainly picked up this book for help with my poor sleep, but this book is so much more. It helps with sleep issues, but also deals heavily with dreams and what God wants to do in us and through us while we sleep. I highly recommend this book to all Christians.
