Personal Response
Rising, by Tom Abrahams was a really good book. This book was filled with action and told a good story. It told such a good story that I felt like I was watching the scene of the book. I liked how the scenes were laid out in the book and were built up to an exciting ending. This book started out a little weird, but in the end it was great.

Plot
This book took place in a little town in Texas where the scorch disease infected people. The scorch was like a plague that spread across the world. When the plague finally ended, thousands of people had died. Even after people survived the plague, they had to worry about gangs and thieves. There were a lot of gangs, but the way everyone lived was old fashioned. The law could not be trusted. Taverns were everywhere, and people were walking around with guns on their hips. Everyone had to have one eye looking forward and one looking backward everywhere they went. Nobody could be trusted even if they seemed like friends. There was almost nowhere safe to live. All the cities were destroyed and the gangs owned them. Food and water were hard to find because of the drought. Nothing was paid with money. It was based on what people had to trade. Guns and bullets were a high demand and anyone could buy whatever they wanted with just a few bullets. If people didn't know how to shoot a gun, they better learn quick. Having a gun in this book was a key to survival. This book took place in a little town where there wasn't much of anything left. They were there in search of the guys who killed Marcus's friends.

Characterization

Marcus was an older man who used to live a nice life before the scorch hit. Then everything changed and he couldn't trust anyone. He had a family living with him that were being chased by a group of guys and he was willing to help them out. They were there for a while and he and the family became really close. One day a gang came and killed everyone for no reason, just to kill, and left him to die with two gunshot wounds to the stomach.

Alex was a young girl who grew up in the scorch and lived with it her whole life. Marcus found her in a broken down city where she was trying to kill Marcus. Marcus noticed that she was all alone and he felt bad for her. Alex tried to act tough, but she knew that she wouldn't make it much longer if she didn’t team up with Marcus.

Setting
This book took place in Ablance, Texas. The time period was about 20 years in the future when the scorch and gangs took over the cities. No one had a house where they stayed. They mostly slept in the woods or on the side of a street.

Thematic
The theme in the book was teamwork and trust. Trust played a big part in the book. People wanted to trust others, but it was not good to have too much trust in someone All the characters had to be ready for a friend to betray them and break that trust they had with each other. These people also needed teamwork. It was hard to do anything by themselves. If a person couldn’t shoot a gun or lift heavy things, it was good to have someone there to watch each others’ backs. It also helped to have someone there to make sure that they didn’t get lost trying to do everything for themselves.

Recommendations
I would recommend this book to seventh graders and up, mostly because there is a lot of violence and a few inappropriate words. There are also some words in there that might be hard for some younger kids to read. Someone who likes action and comedy would like this book. There was a lot happening in this book that made me feel like I was watching it instead of reading the book.

Marcus Battle cannot seem to catch a break. Just when everything settles down and he can enjoy life, Wham! along comes some Murphy’s Law to turn it all upside down. It’s been five years since Battle returned to the homestead with Lola, Sawyer, and Penny. They have managed to survive and come together as a family without much interference until now. Three men changed Battle’s world in a matter of minutes.

“Revenge is a dish best served cold.” And, Marcus aims to serve it all three times.

The Dwellers came into power after the Cartel was defeated. Their reign did not last long and the former state of Texas is once again a lawless territory with competing gangs plaguing the innocent. Battle’s moral compass, or what is left of it, will not let him pass up a chance to set things right for those he stumbles upon.

His search for revenge meets him up with the most unlikely companions. One tries to kill him and then becomes his constant sidekick. Another is on a similar quest as Marcus and joins them to exact his own retribution. The trio, while somewhat comical, are a deadly combination.

This is my favorite quote from the book: “If these people could shoot, I’d be dead three times over,” he muttered. Not sure why, but I found this hilarious. What Battle said is so true in this situation. But, I digress.

Abrahams’ fourth novel in The Traveler series, Rising, is fast-paced and gritty. True to the series’ name, Marcus is always traveling. He cannot stay put no matter much he would like. The story is reminiscent of tales from the Wild West with vigilante justice and guns-a-blazing. There are no more hospitals to patch you up. You are more than likely to die from infection or bleed out from your wounds.

I am enjoying Battle’s struggle to retain his humanity. He often goes into the darkest places of his mind. Then along comes someone he is drawn to because they remind him of happier times in his past, and he starts that long climb back towards his version of normalcy.

His story will continue.

5 out of 5 stars.

I received this book for free from the author for review consideration. This in no way affected my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

I have actually read books 1-4 in this series. I love the Marcus Battle character, who is the central character in each of these dystopian novels. There is plenty of action in each book as Marcus fights to survive and keep those he loves safe.

Personal Response:
This book was very eventful and always had something going on. The characters were always faced with challenges, which kept me reading. The author did a good job making the whole story interesting and not letting it get dry.

Plot Summary:
Battle took in Sawyer and Lola as they were both homeless. They lived a good life on the farm and weren’t bothered too much by people passing by. There was a group that showed up to the farm. They killed Lola and Sawyer and almost killed Battle. Battle stayed alive and wanted to get revenge on this group. Battle met Lou while they were in a standoff with each other. They traveled to a compound that held resources, such as gas. They traveled to the compound, because they wanted to kill Barbas. Barbas was the guy who killed Battle’s family. Lou and Battle met a man named Rudy. Rudy wanted to kill a man who took his family. The same guy killed Battle’s family. Rudy stayed behind with his wife, and agreed to let Lou borrow Fifty. There was only one more man to kill and his name was Cego. There was a shootout and Cego was killed. Marcus was shot but started to recover.

Characterization:
Battle changed a lot throughout the book. He started out itching for revenge, because his family was murdered. Throughout the book, he only saw hatred because of the murderers. He met Lou along the way and grew to be more understanding. He learned to be patient, because she was a teenager. Lou was very hostile in the beginning and only cared about her knives. She grew closer to Battle and looked at him like a friend. Battle was the father figure Lou didn’t have.

Impacts of Setting:
The book started with Battle and his family on his property in Texas. The book took place in Texas within cities of: Abilene, Del Rio, and El Dorado. The story took place in the futuristic time period. They traveled to these places to kill the murderers who killed Battle’s family. This was important to the story, because they traveled to these places to find the killers.

Recommendation:
I really enjoyed this book and hope that the guys in my class read it! I recommend this book to people who like action and are over the age of 14. There is a lot of action and killing in this book, so girls might not like it. The word content is fairly simple, so people shouldn’t have a hard time. I also recommend this book to people who like to read about dystopian books. I recommend this book to these people, because this book is about a world without government and it’s about guns. I give this book a four out of five stars.

After many requests from fans, Battle returns in this fourth installment of 'The Traveler Series'. He is finally beginning to feel like he has a home, a family, and a semblance of safety. But his path toward vengeance is always beckoning, always calling. Will Battle ever be able to turn away from the prize of destruction and the lure of revenge? Will he remain a solitary vigilante or can he find a life of purpose with others?

Outstanding writing and an excellent story. I'm so glad Marcus Battle is back. Incredibly well done!

ALL eight novels are approximately a 70 hour listen - a post-apocalyptic world. A flea born pathogen, highly contagious, wipes out over two-thirds of the world population. There is no cure, but there is natural immunity. If you want the full experience, in sequence: Home, Canyon, Wall, Rising, Battle, Legacy, Hero, and finally Harbor.

Plot. Marcus Battle, a PTSD victim, returns to Texas and loses his son and wife to the plague; he speaks to them and hears them speak to him. Marcus also lives as a hermit on his land, defending it with shoot-first, so you don't need to ask questions. After months of solitude, Marcus rescues a woman being chased by a cult of marauders. The marauders have her son. They successfully burn Marcus's house down. Under a facade of revenge, Marcus and the woman set out to rescue her son and rid Texas of these thugs. The story has a considerable slice of flashbacks to Marcus' time in service - when he nearly dies to rescue his badly injured friend. Will Marcus conquer his own demons, rescue the boy of a stranger? Stay alive? Will he have a second family?

The story moves to Battle's father-daughter friendship with an orphaned, snarky, broken girl. Smart as they come, fiercely independent, able to sling a knife with lightning speed - Louise (Lou), is as damaged as Battle, having lost loved ones to the virulent infection and possies of opportunistic thugs. Lou and Battle's adventures traverse the years and the miles in search of a life without violence.

Liked. Good character development, easy to visualize action, well-organized plot over eight novels. No sex, no explicit language. Decent narration and production.

Not so hot. There are some holes in an apocalyptic world, in my opinion. Not much mention of shortages of essentials like gasoline, medicine, etc., all that would surely be horrific. No mention of tampons - hey, they will run out! Just sayin'. By the time the series ends, a span of 21 years since the plague, there is also a plethora of ammunition - who's making all this stuff? Lots and lots of double-tap gun violence. A bit slow tempo, but just pump the speed up a tad on your iPhone.

This is a long series, cliffhangers throughout - but, comes to a satisfactory conclusion with the final novel, Harbor.

Written by By Tom Abrahams, narrated by Kevin Pierce in unabridged audiobook format, released in March 2016-19 by Piton Press LLC.

Recommended - don't have to stretch the imagination much. This stuff could really happen, as we all now know with COVID19.

Dorothy and the Scarecrow follow the yellow dusty road on the way to revenge

Major Marcus Battle is joined on his road to revenge by a young knife throwing girl and her dog. On their way they're joined by a collection of characters, some of which live to continue on.

By now we know the characters well enough to be surprised by some of their actions. But then, we know that Battle is unpredictable and unfathomable in his decisions. For some strange reason, in spite of everything, I like the old soldier and kinda admire him. Lou, the stray he picked up along the road and sorta adopted, is another character with a deep past well beyond her seventeen years. She is a perfect fit to Marcus' surly heart. Along the way, they're joined briefly by some fellow travellers and some other unsavory nogood full-sized Munchkins who can't seem to survive. The wicked witches of East and West and South (wickedest of all) are the goals along the yellow dusty road. The three on this quest (Marcus, Lou and her little dog Fifty) quickly become my idols as they travel singlemindedly to their goals.

The action is crisp and clean, the characters have depth and color, the storyline is straight with a few fitting knots along its length, and the storyteller is now one of my favorites. All this combines to create a memorable read, but I'd suggest you start at the beginning with book one - Home. Try it. You'll love it! I did and I've already got Battle, book five of this series.

At the end of Wall, Battle told Lola and Sawyer, let’s go home. And they bring 9 month old Penny. Then book 4 starts about 5 years after. Battle and Lola are together, Sawyer has learned to hunt and lots of other things from his Dad and Penny is about 6. Battle feels blessed to have another family. The mauraders come to the property. Battle is on the back side and by the time he gets back to the barn, the three men have killed Lola, Sawyer and Penny. Then they shoot Battle and leave him for dead. After he gets the bullet out and heals up,,it is time to go find these three men and kill them. He hasn’t home far when he encounters seventeen year old Lou, whose name is really Louise, but she doesn’t like it so she goes by Lou. She has 2 knives that she is excellent with and throws one next to Battle to warn him off. There are men who are capturing young women like Lou and some older and are selling them in the sex trade. Battle gets her knives but says she is welcome to come with him hunting down the three men. There is a lot of action, more people are killed, they come up on a man and his dog getting water at a lake. Once Battle decides he won’t harm him, he finds out that one of the men who killed his family haven taken his wife and his cousin’s wife, so they join Battle and Lou on their Quest for revenge,. Still more killing. But to find out if they find the men and the women you need to get the book, it is great. Now I am on to Book 5 of the series.

Book 4 in the series, another end of the world book. They are like the westerns I read when I was a kid, fast, easy, fairly mindless but very entertaining (kick-ass, ex-soldier/cop/special forces/super-duper tough guy with dead women/wives and lots of dead bad guys in his past and many more to come in the future). This one had lots of all of that. I enjoyed the momentum of the story but the development (or lack thereof) of the main character's emotional life seemed to fluctuate from book to book and he seemed stuck after awhile and that disappointed me for some reason. It's hard to rate these kind of books - I could rate it 2 stars or 4 stars. If I look at these titles (I read 4 of these in this series) in a few months and can't remember how I felt about them, I will lower my star rating). At least it wasn't another zombie apocalypse. I've read a bunch of those the last few years and they start to all run together in my mind. By the end of this book I felt like I had had enough.

A Story That Will Play On All of Your Emotions

As the fourth in this series, this book does not falter at all from the rest of the books. I started reading this series at the recommendation of another of my favored authors and it hasn't disappointed throughout. I scoured through these four books and now have to wait for Book 5 to see how Battle will take the quieter existence.

I have to say, without giving away any spoilers, the beginning of the book is not at all what I expected and left me a little lost for the reasoning behind the authors shift in the story. But, it sets the stage for the rest of the book and the one to come. I enjoy the authors periodic kick of humor in those tense situations of the story and I believe fellow readers will enjoy Battles new sidekick.

Really looking forward to the next installment.

Good but not as good as Book 1 to 3 it seemed to be rushed and in some way boring there was more action and excitement in the first three books that held and made you want to know more. Still starts off with Marcus Battle second family getting murder and as usual he get shot up and someway service and then goes on a revenge trip and meets a young girl who tried to kill him and then they become friends and he helps rescue women from a group of thugs with the help of an a stranger who wife and sister in law is taken and his cousins are killed.
Sorry to say that is the story in a nutshell flatly no life even the characters are flat and there is no feeling in the characters the narrator I believe he tried but he was not able to.

The Best Yet!

Marcus Battle is back! From the shocking first chapter, through the drama packed story, to the very last page, I could not put this one down. I absolutely love Battles' new traveling companion. Also, Mr. Abrahams writing creates such an easy reading flow, it is easy and wonderful to get lost in the story. Don't miss this one!

Rising. Tom Abrahams

Marcus Battle has survived countless battles. They all weigh heavily on him. His wife and son he lost to the plague. His second family to marauding murderers. Slave traders, drug dealers. Marcus was left for dead. He didn't die. Revenge is a powerful motivator. Along the way he meets Lou. A teenager without a family. She's also a hardened survivor. This is a story of bravery, trust, friendship.....New beginnings. A fabulous read! I highly recommend!!

So many surprises

I hated the start, the deaths seemed so unnecessary but so fitting for the Scourge. It seems like when you think things can't get worse, they can and do. I did enjoy the story, the new characters, and the ending. For new readers they need to start at the beginning or you won't fully appreciate the plot and revenge. I am so ready for Marcus to come across Pascal, perhaps in a future book.

This starts with a very grim scenario but lots of action and drama throughout the story. Marcus is a fairly one dimensional character in most ways but for some reason, I rather like him. I also like the new character, Lou. Seems like another book to come based on the ending of this.

A good series

A good post-apocalyptic series, good enough to want to keep reading the next books as they are released. The main character and thread of the plot can get a little tedious but it's still interesting enough to keep me reading the series.

A good man

Marcus Battle is a good man. Probably ,too good of a man. He has the ability, but there is something holding him back. Perhaps the loss of
two families would do that to a man. But, in book 5, I think will find something about himself.

Marcus Battle tells his story compellingly and to keep your interest to see what will happen next. I could put this book down until I finished it. Lou makes a great new partner. Fifty was another special addition. I am sure you will enjoy this continuing saga of Marcus Battle. Happy reading!

This is the type of story to keep you reading cover to cover. Marcus battles both his inner and outer demons. He is both a good and bad man when the need arises.

Marcus Battle has been living a good life in the five years since the end of the first trilogy. However, his world is about to crash, as he loses everything, it is time for Battle to return to bloody revenge. Good start to the next chapter of Battle's life, with new characters introduced.

There is nothing that held me to this book. The first 3 were great but now the story has been told to death. I wish I had left it with book 3. That would have been the perfect ending.

Good read

Have to read the first three in order to fully appreciate this one, book four. Battle is named appropriately.
And no Battle is not a stupid name, it is rather most fitting.
