Fandom: Harry Potter -------------------------------------------------- Based on "Hatal Fart Attack" by Corwalch, "Royal Ward" follows the changes in Harry's life after he gains the personal attention of the Queen. My thanks to Corwalch for permission to write a sequel. Reading "Hatal Fart Attack" first is recommended, but not absolutely required. Please note that this story begins in 1989, shortly before Harry turns 9.
A looong, mainly Gen fic. It's well worth the read, assuming you're not utterly opposed to ♦︎ an RPF thread (including Princess Diana getting a happy ending of her own!), ♦︎ a slightly-too-mature-for-his-9-thru-11-years Harry (much better than the reverse!), ♦︎ redeemed Malfoys (no instant fixes, just gradually-developed realizations, starting with enlightened self-interest‡), or ♦︎ an event-shaping OC (college-age tutor/advisor Stephen is just a decent Muggleborn guy with normal smarts and "normal" magic, though, no overpowered Gary Stu or anything), ♦︎ or of course if you're a devoted fan of APWB Meddlemore (this is one where he's embezzling Potter money, too, which is not solidly part of my personal headcanon but certainly isn't a deal-breaker for me either, and he's not even a central character).
It ENDS with Harry and his yearmates Sorted into Hogwarts (well, the morning after), but all the major obstacles to a happy life for him (and Sirius) have been removed. Even the surviving Dursleys — Dudley being the bigger project here, because mother-blindness lasts a bit longer in this Petunia than total resentment of Harry (especially since he's rarely upset into accidental magic anymore) — have been rendered tolerable, also gradually and naturalistically, though they don't have to be a big part of Harry's life hereafter, anyway.
My only significant content nitpick would be that although bullying-victim Harry does call Sirius on the teenage Marauders' treatment of Snape, and gets through to him, there's at least one prank of his mentioned that Harry and Stephen laughed about, while I was very disapproving:
There are also a couple trivial internal inconsistencies (e.g., Harry having pizza supposedly for the first time twice), some canon-typical fatphobic insults (though it'd be ridiculous of me to object to the healthy eating also discussed), plus a few conversations completely retold = repetitious, but the reteller usually offers a new perspective, so it's not a big annoyance.
Definitely do count this as a rec from me — as you can tell by the fact that when I belatedly realized I hadn't checked and shelved it on Goodreads, I got sucked into rereading the whole massive story mere months later! (Yep, you've heard that song from me before! 😁)
‡ Oh, I should perhaps give a content warning for discussion of infertility, miscarriage, and stillbirth, which inbred purebloods unsurprisingly often suffer from. (You'd think even aristos would get a clue from the careful breeding of ~pedigreed~ pets and livestock, wouldn't you, but maybe workers do all that, without owners ever learning any details themselves? 🤔)
A decent, unique so far, read. Could easily become five stars, but the story hasn’t finished posting yet (though the author assures us it’s completed).
The premise is, as shown in the prequel, Harry saves a little kid from a punch by Dudley, and that kid turns out to be Prince Harry of the House of Windsor. As someone younger than Canon Harry Potter, and not from the UK, it’s not always easy to keep up with the names and happenings, but if you were born before the 1990s, you likely know enough offhand to keep up, no matter; and if not, there’s always research.
The telling is even-placed (slowish, but very detailled, and a lot of things happening) story with few clichés (except for some copy-and-paste from other stories of the same author, but only in the first two dozen or so chapters) with mostly decent spelling, it clearly shows the author evolving with the story. Anything in the story itself is believable, no deus-ex-machina; some foreshadowing (), with quite enough going on to keep the reader amused and occasionally surprised, but very consistent. I would be very much pleased if this evolved into a full seven-year (well nine, as it starts in 1989) epic.
Enjoyable enough if you're fine with "Dumbledore was enabling home abuse and embezzled from Potter's vault" kind of fic. Actually Dumbledore's parts are quite minor, it's mostly about getting better life for most of characters: Harry, Sirius, Malfoys, even Petunia and Dudley. And Lady Di too, royal subplot was quite strong and I liked it more than in Long Live the Queen Another big part was magical / muggle relations, and even if I found it lacking subtlety, it was interesting. I have also to commend author for finishing it, as this fic was written over a period of 7 years.
