The yearly Daily Guideposts gook have become a staple of my devotional reading over the last decade or so, thanks to my parents. I have really come to enjoy the diversity of readings that I get from them.
They aren't all good readings, and there are a couple of the writers whose readings I would just as soon skip. Marci Alborghetti and Erika Bentsen come to mind immediately.
There are a number of writers, however, that never fail to inspire me. Among those are Sabra Ciancanelli, Brian Doyle, Julia Attaway, Rick Hamlin, Brock and Pam Kidd, and Carol Kuykendall. I'm sure I missed some.
One might question the fact that I gave this book two more stars than Swindoll's The Finishing Touch. But, you see, I don't really expect great depth from Daily Guideposts. I don't expect it, yet there are many times when it surprises me, almost to the point of tears.
There are always a couple of times a year when the same writer takes a whole week, usually around Easter and Christmas. There are also a few thematic segments that are scattered throughout the year. These are also typically by the same writers. For example, this year we had "Relying on God's Unfailing Love," by Erin MacPherson; "The Beauty of Simplicity," by Julie Garmon; "Confidence in Difficulty," by Julia Attaway.
Julia's writings strike a chord in my heart. She deals with mental issues in all of her children, and we have had some of that in our family. Julie Garmon's segments on simplicity touch me, as simplicity is one of the disciplines that I strive to work out in my life (without much success, thus far).
Carol Kuykendall wrote the Easter segment last year, and it was simply marvelous. So much so that I felt compelled to send her an email telling me how much I appreciated it.
I look forward to beginning Daily Guideposts 2019 today. As usual, I received a copy for Christmas, from my mother.
