A fatal car crash. The sole survivor. And the dark hooded stranger that wants her dead.
When a terrible accident—not accident—stole my parents’ lives, my whole perfect life changed. My memories are hazy, and there are scars on my wrists. I’ve been locked away for my own protection…until I prove my sanity, until I lie. There was no hooded figure on the road that day, no one standing over me as I lay paralyzed watching my parents burn.
I am Cassidy Lockheart…20-year-old orphan.
Determined to free my caged mind, I find myself far away on an unexpected trip to help return my forgotten past. The snow was part of my life before, but now it’s like a blank slate, until an avalanche changes everything. But I’m not alone. These other ‘lucky’ trip winners may not be the strangers they pretend to be. And my hooded attacker…I see him everywhere.
Is this real? Or delusion caused by head trauma?
Either way, I’m being watched. I can sense it. I can feel it. Someone is after me; maybe they’re after us all. The avalanche was no accident. It was staged to deliver us to this abandoned place. A place where the walls whisper dark secrets of a sinister past…a past no one can escape. Trapped, this snow won’t let up…it won’t let us leave. My lost memories hold clues, but they’re buried so deep, polluted and twisted in my every waking nightmare. What is real? I don’t have the answers. But I need them. Time is ticking and if I don’t figure this all out soon it will be too late.
The past is coming for us all…and it wants blood.

This book was something different from what L.L. Myers usually writes. However it’s excellent, I loved this book so much and recommend you give it a try. J.L. Myers is such a great Author, she can write anything and rest assured it’s going to blow your mind. There hasn’t been a bad book of hers that I haven’t loved.
I beta read this book but I swore to always be honest in my reviews, be it ARCs , beta read or « bought » books so I can honestly say that this book is worth 5 stars for me !
For once I’ll take some time to “set the scene” and explain how I came to read this book whereas mysteries are not my usual genre. I fell in love with JL Myers fantasy series “Blood Bound". I’ve been truly amazed by the intricate plot. She was a mastermind at imagining very complex plot without ever losing the reader. Events happened in the fourth book that she planned right from the start leaving some crumbs for the reader and suddenly everything made sense. I was “Wow! Of course! How did I not see it?”. By the end of the series I told her that her brain must be fried! She told me that indeed she wanted to write something simpler and would next write a standalone to rest her brain. So when she asked me if I wanted to beta read her next book I agreed immediately even if it was not my typical read.
Well let me tell you that her brain is certainly not rested right now.It may be a standalone but it’s far from simple!
I don’t want to spoil your fun and being a mystery I can’t tell you many things about the plot so I’ll go with analogies:
-I felt like a mouse in a trap or in a labyrinth. The hooded killer was waiting, lurking in a dark corner and I never knew when he would strike or who he would kill. I felt hunted!;
-If you can imagine how a fish out of the water must feel you have a pretty good idea of how I felt. I was not only totally out of my comfort zone rarely reading mysteries but I was also literally panting seated at the edge of my chair. Totally out of breath as it was riveting!
-you see the flight simulator astronauts have to experience? The one with the seat going in every direction so fast you can no longer tell up from down? Well that was me in the seat with my brain cells pushed in every direction to try to understand what was happening and who the killer might be!
-now I’ll use Tom Thumb analogy. You know how he leaves a trail of crumbles to try finding his way back home? Well that’s what J.L Myers did with her clues. She left a trail of clues to help the reader find the killer. Only I never found my way either, except by the end of the book.
And I hurt So MUCH for that poor girl and what she went through. Be warned the book is closer to very, very dark read sometimes!
So in a few words it was: confusing, riveting, breathtaking and pure genius! I was left speechless and open mouthed!
And now yes I will fangirl one last time for JL Myers and no she does not pay me to say this: maybe I have special tastes but I really think she should be on your “writers you think deserve to be better known” shelf.
Cassidy Lockheart barely remembers the crash that took her parents lives. Her mind had splintered as she lay there watching her parents burn. They say her mind conjured the stranger, they say she will be healed when she believes that, so she lied, because she knows…and she runs from everyone, including herself.
It would be the mysterious trip she won that would bring her face to face with that figure from her past and the forgotten hell she endured. An avalanche, a deserted home in the woods, a locked room that told the story of a child terrified, alone and abused and death. So much death.
Someone is killing the other “winners” of this fateful trip and Cassidy has no idea whom she can trust. A child’s diary and their pained artwork will unravel a story of horror beyond imagining and somehow Cassidy will uncover the truth or die trying as the stranger from her past seeks retribution for the small child who once lived only to be an object of abuse, rape and torture while those who could help her turned a blind eye.
Nerve Damage by J.L. Myers is about as hair-raising as a dark suspense can get! Steeped in an ominous mystery, veiled in shrouded details from the past, this tale will have even the hale and hearty sitting back to take a breath. Lots of gore, lots of blood and unspeakable acts, if you are looking for a tale to white-knuckle your way through, this could be it. J.L. Myers has horror down pat, and the setting and atmosphere ramps up the tension one hundred-fold. Complex and razor taut from start to finish!

**Complementary ARC received by the lovely J.L Myers, and which I voluntarily reviewed** I need to put my 2 cents in before I write my review to this amazing book. First of I lived it, and was scared S%&*less at some points and had to put down the book quit a few time too, due to the intensity of the story-line. Lol I now remember why I don’t watch psychological Thrillers alone. Yeah I know I sound like a baby, but boy if the story is that good you forget that you are alone watching / reading that someone will give you a heart attack if they do scare you. Review Summary: Great story and nerve-racking at times (Pun intended) Book starts off where Cassidy basically bears witness to the murder of her mother and father, but let me tell you something, pay closer attention, read the book really slow or you might get a bit side tracked and confused. Wait it might just be me that have that kind of problem. Lol You briefly get to meet Kasey ( Remember that name and like I said pay attention) as the 3de person, but all is not what it seems, you’ll get pulled into this story so fast and you’ll be turning pages and read well into the night and it’s worth it I promise. After the accident & murder of her parents Cassidy ends up in a mental institution and gets to relive her nightmares every day, and in as sense get forced to say that whatever she saw that night was just a figment of her imagination, and by know Cassidy wants to get out and ‘move on’ with her lives and visit her parents graves and go back to university, and in the ‘end’ she finally manages to get out of this place and go to her parents graves, it’s a miracle or curse that she made it this far after trying to commit suicide to escape the horrors, but as you know live is not always that cut and dry. Back at the university she enters her room, and released that someone was in her room, and went through her stuff, and to her horror burned all her photo’s but one, were her parents was smiling and looking really happy in snow gear, but she can’t remember this place, and wishes that her memory of her life will return to pick-up the pieces, whilst sitting an envelope was pushed underneath her door and she opened her door to see who it might have been, but no one was there, opening the enveloped she saw an all paid expense trip to a holiday resort and she has to leave tomorrow, being confused who might have done that she starts packing for her trip. AND… Here is where you really should start paying attention ladies & gents because this is were the fun \ horror begins. Waiting at the bus stop for her bus to the ski resort, Cassidy has this weird feeling that she’s been watched, for what reason she is not entirely sure, and she spots someone with a dark hoodie, but disappears just as fast after that. Getting on the bus she bumped into a boy and he seems so nice to her and apologizes to her for not looking were his going even though it was her fault. He introduces himself as Jeremy and then notices that she too are going to the same ski resort. Coincidence?? Arriving safely at the ski resort and checked in and getting settled things start to happen, and it leaves Cassidy confused, because she lost quit a few hours, so it means she blacked out again, deciding that she has to go search for something to eat, she bumped into Jeremy again, and he said that he met a few other people and will be going for an outing the next day and that she should join them. After finalizing that they’ll meet-up the next day at ten they go their separate ways. The next morning Cassidy woke up to an alarm to realize that she set a reminder for herself of the meeting and that she’s near running late and have only nineteen minutes to get ready. She finally meets-up with Jeremy and he helps her divert the others around the main building to the back for her to quickly grab her gear and something to eat. **PS** From here on out I’m just going to give you cliff notes and leave you to purchase the book and read the full story. Deal?? Cassidy is all geared up and joins Jeremy with the others. *Brad a very cheeky and annoying young man *Jill young girl with blond hair *Katherine a former social worker *Stan Blunt retired cop Okay so now you have met the others that forms the group. Lol Pay close attention to these characters they all play a very important roll into Kasey’s story the girl I mentioned in the beginning. The story takes them all through a scenic root, and then disaster strikes, and they all get forced to work together not really knowing what lies in store for them all, and boy are they in for one he’ll of a ride, that will change everything for them all, and then the story starts making sense and all the pieces to this Hectic Psychological Thriller comes perfectly together and you’ll see the big picture…
Kasey so very young, and neglected, been abused beyond your wildest imaginations, forced to live a life of a caged animal. No one should ever have to grow up / go through something so bad. In the end I really could identify with her but then it was already too late.
A big thank you again J.L Myers for giving us one epic book and keeping us glued to the pages
Next time, PLEASE use an editor. If you cannot afford an editor, at least secure the services of a beta reader with good knowledge of the language and how to use it properly. Poorly written - bad word choices, incorrectly used words, severe abuse of noun/pronoun agreement in order to try to disguise the gender of the villain (there are ways to do this without making your lack of correct grammar echo like thousands of fingernails dragging down hundreds of chalk boards).
Oh, the story? Unreliable narrator; unbelievable situations. It was painful, but there must be something in there to polish because I did read the entire thing.
I loved this! I don't normally read many thrillers, but Nerve Damage sucked me in and wouldn't let go. It's full of twists and turns that leave you guessing till the very end. The switch from current time to the past occur seamlessly, filling the reader in on the backstory that has shaped the characters into what they are today... and explains WHY they are doing it. Cassidy is a complex character with demons riding her coattails. She lost her family and feels like it's her fault. The guilt drives her actions and sets things into motion that can never be undone. The characters she meets along the way have their own issues, and together they weave a finely written tale filled with mystery, suspense and a brutality that, as a reader, you can feel down in your bones. I thought it was beautifully written and paced perfectly. Couldn't put it down! 5 stars!
Very well written, not a book I would wish to read again. I was never a fan of Ann Rice, or V. C. Andrews, the very dark place that this book inhabits is one that I would not wish to visit often. I do not believe that is a spoiler that child rape and violence are part of the plot. A subject matter that is real but not an area of entertainment for me.
That said; this is a smart and well put together novel. The author is to be commended for an exemplary job.
I picked this book up when I read the synopsis. I've always loved a good psychological thriller and this one did not disappoint! The scene is set with Cassidy and the accident and then picks up with her having lost memories of her past. The story takes us to a remote location where there is a dark and deadly history. It was enthralling and gripping from the first page and I loved it completely! I had some guesses as to the end, but was gladly surprised with how things turned out! Amazing writing! Highly recommended!
Nerve Damage by J.L. Myers is a fantastic thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Cassidy is a well-written character that really makes you believe in Myers writing. This book is a story about the past coming back to haunt you. You cannot run from your past because it always comes to bite you when you least expect it. The ending was a major shocker that left me with my mouth open. I loved every minute of this story. It keeps me guessing the entire time.
This is a story about a girl that was orphaned by the fact that her parents were killed in an accident. Cassidy is a very believable character that makes the reader feel for her, and you want to care for her. There are many twists and turns throughout the story. The twists and turns keep the reader on their toes. The ending is shocking and not expected. The reader will be very pleased with this finish. I like that the characters were well developed and full of personality and gave the reader a reason to care about each character. I love the twist at the end. I will not spoil it, but it gave me chills when I read it. The one scene that I liked was the beginning when the character was watching the accident and how that played out. You really feel for the character and want to do something for her. I also like the flashbacks that were telling us the past and giving us more of a story of the character.
I did not like that the story ended. I wanted more, and it gave me a satisfaction of completion. I just did not want the story to end. I felt so enthralled with the story that I felt it was my story. I also did not like that some of the characters had to die. That is a must with a story like this, but I did not have to like it.
The rating I give this book is a 5 out of 5 stars. The reason for this rating is that Myers gave us a story that was phenomenal. It holds the reader's interest from page one. Myers is a master of the thriller. I would recommend that anyone that loves thrillers with a psychological twist then this book is for you. I would not recommend this book for the young reader or anyone that does not like thrillers.
This is an intense read! It pulls you in from the very beginning but it has so many surprises and twists that you won't know what is really going on or what is coming next. This story was nuts. Cassidy is having memory issues after a car crash kills her parents but she survives. She knows there is more to it but no one believes her. She gets released and wins a all inclusive paid trip at a ski lodge. There are other contestants as well and they end up getting together and going on a trail together. There is an avalanche and the group all get stuck together and find shelter at an abandoned house. Cassidy starts having flashbacks/seeing a ghost of a little girl and what happened to her in that house. She sees the hooded figure and knows that bad things are going to happen but she has to figure out what is going on and who that figure is. I can't say much more without ruining/spoiling the story. This story is really well written and gripped me from the beginning. I had to figure out what was going on with Cassidy and what the connection was with all the people. This story is twisted and it deals with some tough subjects but it is really well done. It's definitely a psychological thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat until the end. I really enjoyed it! I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
This is not a happy story. There is no sunshine or rainbows in these pages. Nerve Damage is dark and disturbing to the extreme and there are scenes of abuse, both physical and sexual, that may be triggers to some. That being said, I was completely consumed by this psychological thriller and could not put it down. I had an idea of where this story was going, but the author threw enough twists at me to keep me second guessing myself. Myers is quite the master at dangling carrots as she builds a tension filled tale of a nightmarish look inside a mind broken by terrors that no one should ever have to suffer. The story does jump between past and present and in and out of the killer's mind, sometimes rather abruptly, but as the book progresses, there is a purpose for those jumps and what may seem confusing at first, all comes together to create a chilling tale to rival the early works of King or Koontz. For me, the evils that men do is always so much scarier than any of the things that go bump in the night. Nerve Damage shows just how terrifying and manipulative an intelligent mind can be when it's completely shattered by unspeakable horrors. From the opening chapter to the mind-blowing ending, I was riveted. This is one that I won't soon forget and will serve to set a high bar for future reads in the genre.
Man this book was extremely disturbing in the best of ways and no of course I was not ready. All functions outside of finishing this book ceased. This story is captivating I mean it starts and you are stuck until it ends. Nothing is what it seems as we go back and forth from the current scene to memories to the killer's description of events as they play out. It is wonderful. The author did a marvelous job of providing just enough detail to make you stay invested as your heart breaks for the little girl and the horror she experienced. They left her so they must pay. But who is making them pay? The drama is high and my bottle is about empty so there's nothing more to say. A simply marvelous read that will have you heart breaking and your mind reeling and in the end breaking for the little girl who is all grown up or is it another twist from this author. Nothing is what it seems. The damage is done. Now they must pay.
I was given a free copy of this book to review BUT I am an honest person and if I really hated it I would say so.
Fortunately I loved it. So much so was up until 1:30 this morning to finish it as I wanted to know how it ended. Do not usually read thrillers but will certainly read more if they are all as good as this.
It is difficult to review this book without giving too much away and it did keep you guessing until the end. Starts off from the viewpoint of Cassidy who is getting over her parents death in a car accident in which she survives and she wins a holiday competition. She joins fellow winners and then things start to happen to the other members of the party. Throw into the mix another story running alongside by way of flashbacks and it will have you on the edge of your seat.
This wasn't the first book I've had the opportunity to read by J.L. Myers and she did NOT disappoint.
This is one of those books I normally avoid. I am so glad that I didn't. It's a must have in the Kindle or on the bookshelf.
This book pulled me in from the very first wood with the well written storyline and the well developed characters, and kept me hooked until the very last word! It has so much and is so well written; it feels so realistic that you just has to read on. The book blurb and the other reviews adequately describes the storyline so I'm not going to repeat that info here.
I enjoyed this book and I am looking forward to reading more books from this author. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys good thriller!
I received a copy of the book from the author and chose to write a review for other readers.
In Nerve Damage, we meet Cassidy Lockheart, a troubled young woman who is haunted not only by her parents' murder, but also by a hooded figure that seems to stalk her wherever she goes. After receiving a free, too convenient trip to a ski resort, she and several other people find themselves stranded in an abandoned orphanage. There Cassidy finds a diary and begins having flashbacks of abuse suffered by another person. After all hell breaks loose, Cassidy finds herself literally face to face with a murderer.
This was a good read but-for the moments of violence that I think were meant to come across as terrible and oh so brutal, but seemed like just another act of violence.
*I received this book on LibraryThing in exchange for an honest review
Nerve Damage is the perfect book for those who love psychological thrillers. The plot does not disappoint. There are plenty of secrets and twists and turns that will keep you entranced well into the night. I enjoyed reading this book and I will admit I was a bit back and forth guessing who the mysterious hooded stranger was. Suspenseful ending though!
Due to some of the content in the book I recommend this book to adults only. There is a warning in the beginning of the book about very graphic scenes.
I received an ARC at no cost from the author and voluntarily reviewed it. All my opinions and thoughts are in no way influenced by this.
OMG I LOVED this book. It’s a horrific psychological thriller about an abused child. Everyone and I mean EVERYONE fails this child. They see the abuse clear as day and just blindly turn the other way. It’s tragic what happens to this poor child. I absolutely loved how each detail that is given plays a major role in what’s to come. It was great. Kept me up late at night just to finish. I knew, I KNEW who was who and who did what. Haha….my suspicions were right! If you love a nice twisted thriller, trust me, this is the book for you. Ahhh I kind of really want more. It was just too good. You get little doses of crazy with a hell of bang towards the end.
I really enjoyed reading this book. It's very dark (VERY), and contains potentially offensive scenes of abuse, but I feel these scenes just helped me put myself in the protagonist's frame of mind.
Do NOT expect a lighter YA feel to this story (like the series Wilder or Blood Bound). The writing in this story is just as well crafted, but is filled with tales of horror that run so deep under the skin, you can feel the blade open each individual blood vessel as it journeys down your limbs.
If you are brave enough to pick up this book, buckle up and enjoy the thrills. Just remember...you were warned.
Based on the storyline i thought, in the beginning, it could have been more intense, and then it did! Make no mistake this is a very dark story...keeps you guessing in the beginning, and you think you figure it out before the main character does but there is a slight twist you might not have seen coming. I'm still up in the air about the ending...be forewarned, it's not an HEA. Honestly, I don't think this story could have had one, but there were other possible non-HEA endings that I would have liked better.
Overall, I thought Nerve Damage was well written and stayed true to form of the book's description. If you want a read that raises the hairs on the back of your neck, Nerve Damage is for you. At times, I had to take breaks when it became too intense. For those of you who like things that go bump in the night, this book is for you. (Note: I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review). -Tex.
Calling this an awesome page-turner feels inadequate!
An awesome thriller. The term "page-turner" seems like an insult to all other page-turners... J.L. Myers paints an incredibly vivid emotional picture that I found hard to put down. The impending sense of dread builds with every page and, even when I thought I had it figured out, she kept adding twists and turns that left me doubting my conclusion.
J.L. Myers outdoes herself with this book. Well done!
As a fan of J.L. Myers books, I knew I had to read this one too. And believe me it did not disappoint. It was a great psychological read full of twists and turns that keep you guessing. Just when I’d think I’d have it figured out, there was always a little bit of doubt lingering in the back of my mind that would make me question my suspicions. This book definitely kept me interested and invested in figuring out the mystery behind the hooded figure. Well done, J.L. Myers, well done.
Nerve Damage is a crazy thriller that keeps you guessing. I thought I cracked down the killer, then I second guessed myself.....more than once!
I don't read much thrillers so I don't know how they typically end. That being said, I'm kind of on the fence with the ending. It feels like a cliff hanger, but I'm not sure if there's more to come.
All in all Nerve Damage is a great thriller that will keep you up all night!
Keeps you on the edge of your seat all the way through! Hard to put down.
The characters were hard to keep up with, there were so many. I believe Kasey and Cassidy were multiple personalities of the same girl. J. L. has such a great vivid imagination. it's hard to believe a girl could do all The things that she did, all the gory killing. i suppose she was pushed to it by the way she was treated. I look forward to her next book.
What a thriller. Had you guessing through the book on what is going to happen next who did it. If you want a book that will keep you on your toes this would be it. It has many twist and turns. In the beginning you think you know what and who and then its like maybe not. The only thing I would change would be the scene with the prescription bottle. I received an arc copy for my honest review.
A well written, fast paced thriller that will have you guessing right up to the end. No spoilers, but I loved CJ. His steadfast love and support were the only things that relieved the horror and constant abuse. If you love psychological thrillers then you can not go wrong with this one.
The book starts out with the reader confused and at a loss for what is happening. But in a good way...It's like we are experiencing everything almost first-hand with the main character. And the further along in the book you get, the worse things get. It's very hard to predict what will happen next in this epic thriller by J.L. Myers. This is an amazing book.
This was a totally different read for me from J. L. Myers. I read this book in one sitting. The book kept me guessing throughout the entire story. The ending was surprising and unexpected. If you cannot handle rape, this book is not for you. But you would be missing out on an awesome story!
