The Carpenter's Dilemma

Rate this book
Family secrets can be buried but never erased. Eventually, the unspoken shadows of the past will threaten even the strongest promise of love.

Dean Matthews should be enjoying the steady and fulfilling life he’s built for himself. He’s triumphed over the land, making a real go of a new life working and rebuilding his late grandfather’s farm. He found love and laughter with his intensely passionate boyfriend, Mikael. And, if the man he loves occasionally shapeshifts into a werewolf? Oh well, we all have our quirks, right? It had taken some time, but Dean eventually came to accept that at least some of the animalistic ardor his new boyfriend exhibited was due to the fact that he sometimes was... an animal.

Dean wants to settle into a comfortable honeymoon period now that he has everything he’s ever wanted, but finds he’s dealing with a whole new set of complications. The meddling and overbearing ways of his new boyfriend’s family for starters, plus the dark secrets of this isolated community Mikael is from. Just how much will Dean be able to compromise? Will there be any love left once they’ve traversed these new battlegrounds?

Gay paranormal romance at its hottest, THE CARPENTER DILEMMA exposes the wild side of men and beasts, featuring a buildup of sexy storytelling and a pack of steamy scenes.

A tradition-trapped werewolf and his determined farmer ...

Book 2 of the Family Secrets series by the wonderful storyteller, Noah Harris. A thrilling werewolf shifter episode, which shows how Dean, 27, a farmer, is in love with carpenter Mikael, “Me-kell,” 25, a werewolf from The Grove. Our couple is doing well until Mikael is summoned home. We meet his family, most of them are nice, but the Alpha, Mikael’s father, is old school, mean and ridged. Dean is not welcome, leaves and is shown his error. Back he goes to set things right, so he can be with the man, “mate” he loves. Once again we get their steamy sexiness, and an angry sex scene, too, but it ends in erotic tenderness. It seems there is more to Dean than he knew, and more similar to his beloved grandfather. After Dean has challenged the Alpha, he then learns the consequences. A terrific tale of fighting for what you believe is right.
We have a HFN, and more to come in book three.
Enjoy !

Having not read the first book in the series, I feel that I have probably missed out on quite a lot and this has taken away from my enjoyment of this instalment. The MC's in this story are now an established couple, living together but pretending to the neighbours that they are 'just good friends'. Mikael is a werewolf and Dean is human. Mikael has not been home to 'The Grove' in some time and is avoiding his family and their demands that he return to where he belongs and assume his duties as son of the pack leader. The pair are living on the farm that Dean inherited from his grandfather and although the farm was incredibly run down when he took over, he has quickly turned it into a success with the crops thriving even though other farmers appear to be struggling. Life is going well for the two and Mikael has got himself regular work as well.

This book focuses on Mikael's dreaded journey home, which Dean refuses to let him make on his own but like in life, once they arrive, the in-laws stick their oar in and it causes a rift between the two men. I have to say, Dean came across as the better man in this situation and Mikael's behaviour was poor, to say the least. The book has an HFN ending and is clearly open to further instalments.

As with NH's other work, this was a nice, easy and uncomplicated read with well defined, likeable characters. My only advice would be to read these books in order to fully understand what's going on. I'll look forward to seeing how the men get on in the next book.

The Carpenter's Dilemma is the second book in the Family Secrets series by Noah Harris. I loved this addition to the series. I loved how Dean finally gets to meet Mikael's parents and the other werewolves of The Grove. Although nothing goes as both Mikael and Dean are hoping, and Dean will have to decide what he really wants and whether he is willing to fight for it. The book is well written and nicely edited. And I can't wait for the next book in the series to see what happens to Dean and Mikael next. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.

Short & Sweet

I get the first book was more of a setup for the series so I understand why this one was so much better. This book just flowed better. The writing and the story improved. There was more character build as well. My only knock is the fact Dean, initially, always seemed to be the one trying to make the relationship work. Mikael might of had the big d**k but when it came to his father it was Dean who had the balls to stand up for them. Other then that little issue, it was good. I look forward go the next.

That was surprisingly a very well written sequel of "Family Secrets". The relationship between Dean and Mikael is getting more defined and serious and the progress toward it is pulling. I am really intrigued to see in which way or how the Author "Noah Harris" will continue or choose to move toward.

It's really great work.

This an amazing second book to “The Carpenter’s Dilemma. In this second book we already know that Dean and Mikael are together as a couple and have actually been living together in bliss for a few weeks. They both know that it will all come to an end when someone from The Grove or Mikael’s family shows up until then they are happy.

The dreaded day came soon and Mikael’s cousin’s show up to tell him he had to come home. Even though Mikael has been extremely happy, his family problems still had not been dealt with and this he must do. After all he’s the heir and only son of the Alpha leader, Samuel.

Mikael wanted to spare Dean the trouble and stress with what Mikael had to deal with, but Dean wouldn’t hear of it and he was going to stand by his lover’s side. Dean didn’t understand the packs traditions before he ended up in the middle of it.

It was terrible that Mikael’s cruel, uncaring father, Samuel, demanded his son’s compliance with the ancient tradition of the pack and having a male as his mate would not produce an heir. Dean’s temper flares with the way Samuel was and controlling and dictating his son’s life and not in a nice tone of voice. And Dean let the old man have a piece of his mind not realizing you don’t talk to the head Alpha that way.

All Mikael did was cower back from his father demands while Dean stood up for his lover. Dean couldn’t understand why Mikael wasn’t fighting for his rights as a person. But Samuel made sure his son understood he had responsibilities as an heir and it was time he fulfilled them.

Staying on the packs land was difficult for Dean, a once spirited man that over days turned depressed and inward. This was due to Mikael picking up his responsibilities as heir, coming home late at night and not paying an attention to Dean once he was home. It tore at Dean’s heart that his lover was turning his back on him because of his father’s demands. Not even wanting to touch him.

During the day, Dean did try to go out to meet some of the pack, but he was ignored or glared at with anger in the packs eyes. The whispers and gossiping hurt Dean. He dealt with this alone. The only people who visited him were Mikael’s sisters and cousins who had come to like Dean. The all said this was the first time they had ever seen Mikael this happy. But it all came down to Dean staying inside to not see the look in the eyes of the pack and he felt unwanted there and Mikael one evening said it was better if Dean wasn’t there.

It was sad when Dean was hurt by those words and quietly left with Mikael’s back still to him. Once Dean was home he was nothing by miserable and went into a deep depression feeling sorry for him for days. He felt it was Mikael’s turn to save their relationship since he had saved it last time.

The farmer next door, Mr. Williams who looked after Dean’s farm when he left with Mikael stopped by. Dean had had quite a few beers and Mr. Williams had conversation with Dean and told him how his son had died. Mr. Williams gave very wise words to Dean and basically saying go fight for your man and the life he wanted.

The next morning, Dean’s depression lifted with a purpose now. He was going to go get his man back, even if he had to fight for him. I loved how Dean raced back in Mikael’s truck to The Group. When he got there all eyes were on him with shock. It was thrilling with Dean’s determination, how he carried himself with confidence and that no one was going to get in his way of his mission.

First Mikael’s cousin greeted him back and then Mikael who tried to insist that Dean leave before something bad happened. Well it did when Samuel came up in back of Dean and demanded that Dean get off from pack land. Dean swirled around and wow, you have to read it to get the full impact of the growling confrontation between Dean and Samuel. The words and phrase ping ponged back and forth in their heated argument in front of the whole pack.

Then when Samuel abruptly dismissed and turned his back on Dean, Dean issued a Challenge” to the man. Yeah, right, a seasoned alpha male werewolf against a human. Not a chance of Dean winning, but that wasn’t Dean’s point, his point was he would fight for what he wanted and he wanted Mikael.

Whatever excuse Samuel said to stop the Challenge, Dean came back with a reason to have it. Of course Dean was scared, because he knew he could never win against a werewolves’ strength. But the Challenge was official and the fight was to be that night and Mikael was furious with Dean.

Mikael ordered Dean to follow him to his house and once that door was closed all hell broke out between them. Yelling back and forth at each other and a threat from Mikael before he lunged at Dean to grab him and Dean slipped away and soon he had Mikael on the floor on his stomach sitting on top of him. Then it turned into the best makeup sex they have had. They both knew there was a strong possibility that Dean could died tonight.

I’ll tell you these two guys are cute and adorable together and their bonding as lovers was strong.

Dean stuck to his word and showed up for the Challenge and fought Mikael’s father. Dean was a spitfire and gave all he had, but Samuel kicked his ass. With the last of his adrenaline he punched Samuel in the face and set him on him butt. No one had ever done that. Of course Dean was a physical mess. Our couple did end up with their HEA, but it’s better to read it then to tell about it.

I was riveted to this book from the get go. Both MCs are great characters with their own flaws as real life. They fit together. The book brings out the secret Mikael had been keeping in the first book, “The Carpenter’s Secret”.

I can’t say enough about this book. For me it was awesome! I hope there’s a book 3.

Summary:

Received for an honest review.

Dean and Mikael have finally settled into a comfortable relationship, but they know that they will soon have to deal with the upcoming problems with Mikael's family. You see Mikael is a member of an allusive werewolf pack that has little to do with the nearby human community. Mikael is one of the few members who lives and works outside of pack land. Now Dean knows what Mikael is, but little beyond the bare facts which becomes abundantly clear when he is finally called to return home. Dean is about to find out that is some ways pack dealings are similar to human interactions by the way they cling to the old ways even though their very traditions make little sense. Dean and Mikael's feelings for one another may be put to the test as they are forced to fight for what they believe in.

It was fascinating to see the differences and similarities between humans and werewolf cultures. Mikael's father may be large and in charge, but his mother seemed to be the power behind him. Dean has his work cut out for him, but he is probably stubborn enough to show any werewolf not to mess with him. While many secrets were revealed more were hinted at and I for one can't wait to see what happens next.

This is the beautifully written and lovingly crafted continuation of The Family Secrets series: Noah Harris' unique and awesome take on the history of werewolves and the folklore surrounding them. The first book, The Carpenters Secret, saw Dean take on his grandfathers run down farm and start a relationship with the eponymous carpenter, Mikael, discovering his secret in the process: he's a werewolf! Both men have 'family secrets' that will be revealed and this second book delves deeper into Mikael's family, the werewolf pack, introducing some interesting characters such as the twins Apollo and Artemis and of course Mikael's parents. The plot revolves around Mikael's dilemma regarding his duty, his status in the pack and his feelings for his lover: he believes he cannot have everything he wants. Dean challenges the pack traditions, where Mikael won't, and puts their growing relationship in jeopardy as a result. I'm hoping Dean's family secrets, intriguingly alluded to in both books, will be fully revealed in book three and I can't wait, as that's the part I'm really looking forward to. Dean and Mikael are warm, loveable characters who both captured my heart and imagination in book one, and book two definitely didn't let me down on the emotional front either. This is shaping up to be another great series and if you loved Noah's Sailing Deep series you'll love this even more. Roll on book three! Note I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.

Dean carried this whole book like the BOSS that he is, and forever will be, in my eyes!

I was livid with Mikael. Did he redeem himself? 😒 I guess.

Dean meets Mikael's family. The cousins and siblings turned out to be cool as well as his mom. His dad was a piece of work.

The story is still good. Although, had I read the book instead of listening to it, I would have probably skimmed through to the end because Mikael had made me mad. And I couldn't have guaranteed that I would have continued on to book three, which I am currently listening to. It's from Mikael's POV.

Notable Scenes/Quotes:

Chapter 8 - Dean really stood by Mikael. Mikael was straight trash. And not in a bad way, but he let his parents run over him and Dean, who really was around there doing the heavy lifting, so he sucked in my eyes.

Will Dean and Mikael grow closer despite family opposition?
July 6, 2017
Format: Kindle Edition
Not quite a four star read, this book has some steam between Dean and Mikael, the main characters, along with a great deal of anxiety and tension. The two are a great couple, but as the story continues, Mikael seems to lose his inner compass and the couple faces hard times when they visit Mikael's family and meet with overt disapproval of their relationship. The romance between Dean and Mikael presents a great background for the author to delve into more society-wide issues about accepting those who are different and don't conform to the norm.

The novel was well-written but one thing bugged me -- the author keeps calling Mikael "the man" instead of "he" or by his name. As one of the main characters, this impersonal term for him was a bit off-putting.

I received an advance copy of this book from the author at no cost. This is my voluntary and honest review.

The first book in this series introduced Dean, Mikael, and their world to us. This book deepened that by showing us the Grove and their insular society. I feel like I understand Mikael more now, and the stressors that he has in his life - especially since the story is told completely from Dean's POV.

I loved that Dean wasn't willing to back down and be intimidated by Mikael's father, and chose to fight for their relationship instead. I also loved that Dean's actions helped Mikael to understand and express his own feelings for Dean. Their experiences in this book strengthened their relationship and brought unexpected respect from the members of the Grove.

The second book in this series has led us down the path to the strange village where Mikael lives. His dad is the alpha and wants Mikael to get mated and have children. Loving Dean and trying to fulfill his duties are more than he can handle and puts his relationship with Dean in the line of fire. Dean shows his strength in this visit and more is put into question about Dean's family's past. I can't wait until the next novel, hoping it will reveal those secrets to us. In the meantime, Dean's and Mikael's love is stronger than ever and I am left looking forward to the next one in the series. I voluntarily read and reviewed this ARC book.

I fell in love with the characters in The Carpenters Secret but wow if book two isn't better! Noah Harris has a way of using descriptive writing to hook the reader in. You find it almost impossible to put this book down. You visit and discover more about the Grove in book two and questions you had after reading book one are slowly being answered. This book in fact this series is shaping up to be one of this authors best in my opinion. I love the characters and they way they come alive on the page. I can't recommend this book strongly enough you should definitely give it a try.

Book two of the Carpenters's Secret and continues the appealing story of Mikael and Dean.
Dean’s strength shows in his love and commitment for Mikael as how he challenged Samuel - who is Mikael father and the leader of the pack .
Mikael is his heir - tempers flare .
As Wolf shifters you know the strength they hold with their muscles tight their force within——
Everything about this book for me was extremely beautiful I was drawn in from the beginning as the book continued exactly from the first book.
The written words take you to a place where Wolf shifters love and gather , it's a place I feel extremely comfortable with.

Relationship Tested

In book 2 we see Mikael and Dean’s relationship tested and some revolutions from Mr. Williams. As walkways the story moves quite quickly and I was able to finish the book in a single day.

The 🌶️ in this book is a little hotter then in Book 1. There are moments of foreshadowing in another important scene that have yet to bare any fruits in terms of clarifying exactly what Dean is but I am thinking Noah is going to keep building that until the series climax verses an individual book climax.

Another series by Noah where we fall in love with a couple and their love is tested by exterior forces.

I love this continuation of Mikael and Dean's story. It picks up where the first book left off and centers around Mikael and Dean dealing with Mikael's family who does not approve of them being together, especially Mikael's father, Samuel. I love Dean's bravery and how he is willing to stand up to Samuel even when Mikael is not. It's a great story filled with action, suspense, drama, and hot, hot lovin'! I really love these characters and can't wait for the next installment.

A risk worth taking,

Dean is enjoying the honeymoon phase of his relationship with Mikael, but that quickly comes to an end when Mikael is ordered back to the Grove. They both knew this day was going to come but they never thought it would be this soon. From the time Dean enter the Grove, he knew he wasn't welcomed and that's fine he has Mikael by his side but that thought is quickly taken away from him. Now a choice must be made stand for love and possibly die or walk away with regret.

MM. Mikael and Dean know Mikael's family will call him back, they are expecting it to happen. When it does their relationship is put to another test and Mikael seems to break immediately. Dean is amazing and incredibly strong. Mikael's sisters are awesome. The best part of the story: Every bond is different. Relationships are not easy. They are always work. Sometimes you work to fight against yourself and the other person. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.

Loved it

This was masterfully executed. The ongoing narrative of Dean's life journey proved genuinely gripping. You truly come to know the couple intimately. The story's emotional depth is unmistakable and resonant. I'll refrain from mentioning that I went through half a tissue box during one particularly moving section.

The author's meticulous attention to detail is remarkable. I'm eager to continue reading this story and to explore more of this author's work.

Yes!!! We are learning more about the werewolf culture. Though I have to say that Mikael may be a werewolf but Dean is the true strength there. I love that we are discovering more about Dean. I can't wait for the next book so that we may get some answers to those discoveries. I am really loving this series more and more.
