Imagine that Queen Elizabeth I never ruled. England and Scotland never unified. It's 1841 the two countries are once more at war.
16-year-old English Princess Myrtle holds the fate of two nations in her hands. She can bring about a truce by marrying Scottish Prince James. Since he is just a boy of 14, she has two years to unlearn everything she thought she knew about Scotland and fall in love with the country that will be her home, and the boy destined to become her husband.
The son of a Scottish Duke, Callum McAllister joins the court to teach Myrtle about Scotland and change her reluctant mind about her future. But when war has been simmering for centuries, two years is a long time. The smallest misstep could bring chaos and return the countries to war. Myrtle must tread carefully to ensure nothing goes wrong.
This delightful steampunk story introduces readers to the world of the clockwork war, a glorious fusion of steampunk and alternate history.
A short prequel with a good narration style from the POV of a princess in an alternate steampunk England. Her world-weary acceptance of her impending marriage to stave off war with the more traditional Scottish kingdom sounded interesting, and there's a hint that there's more than meets the eye to her newfound companionship with a young Scottish noble... But not much really happens. The ending just stops before picking up an alternate set of unrelated characters.
Maybe better as a companion piece to the series rather than a place to start, because while you don't need to know anything about the series to understand this it did feel a bit rushed to me, and without any conclusion to the royal mini-story I felt left hanging.
Nice world building, good writing and an interesting idea, but maybe not where I personally would have chosen to begin with if I'd known.
A good read, just a shame that the first part ended when it did. Myrtle had to agree to the arranged marriage for peace to fall on the fight between Scotland and England. This tells of her first encounter with a Scottish laird and how she found peace with the decision. It also tells how the Duke rose in power to become the powerful person he became in later books. The second part is how Clara came to the attention of the Evil Duke. I did enjoy both but had hoped that there would have been something about Myrtle's journey to Scotland and what happened to change her from a loving young girl to a vindictive one.
I really liked this story. It really makes me want to read the Clockwork War. Myrtle, for being a princess, is a very relatable character, and I really wish she was allowed to marry McAllister. A worthy read, no doubt
Be prepared to be dumped into a world of steampunk royalty. She is being prepared to travel into Scottland to marry for a truce. A simple tale which wraps you up in a beautiful world of customs, steampunk, the growth of love and understanding. It was well written with characters that spoke to you in different ways. A great introduction to what looks to be a promising series.
