Pamela Humphrey was inspired to write after researching her genealogy. Intending to create a booklet for her mom and immediate family, she set about gathering stories and pictures of the Ramirez family. She ended up writing her first book, Researching Ramirez: On the Trail of the Jesus Ramirez Family, a family history of her great great grandfather’s family. During that research, she found a christening record that ignited her imagination. Using the documentation she’d found as a backbone for the story, she imagined what life was like for her ancestors and wrote The Blue Rebozo, a fictional account of her great grand aunt’s life.

On a road trip, when driving through the Texas Hill Country, the landscape sparked the idea for her latest book. Weaving mystery, genealogy, and romance, she wrote Finding Claire. She is currently writing the next book in the Hill Country Secrets series.

She is a stay-at-home, homeschooling mom who enjoys many creative outlets: sewing, paper-crafting, jewelry-making, practicing her bass guitar, reading, and conversing with imaginary characters (what most call writing). She lives in San Antonio, Texas, with her husband, sons, black cats, and leopard gecko.

I don't read a lot of romantic suspense novels, but after reading the description for "Finding Claire" I was immediately intrigued. I thought it sounded like a great story. I wasn't disappointed.

The book starts 2016, in Texas Hill country with a woman who is kidnapped. She is transferred in a van, then locked in a closet. A couple of days later she's able to escape. Unfortunately, she has no idea where she is but what's worse she has no idea who she is. As she stumbles along through tress and brush, she comes upon what looks like an occupied cabin. She is close to losing consciousness and won't be able to go much further. Just then she sees a cat in the window, she takes that as a good sign, and knocks on the cabin door.

It's three in the morning when Alex Ramirez's cat alerts him to the fact that someone is outside. Someone is banging on the door. He opens the door to a woman who is bleeding, covered in scratches with rope tied around her arms. She's terrified and flinches when he tries to touch her.

She tells him she's been kidnapped and that she escaped but that she doesn't know where she's from or even who she is. She has pictures with her that have the name Claire and Emma written on them and they are dated 1986. Alex asks if she's one of the people in the picture, but she has no idea. He decides to call his friend, DJ who is an investigator with the local Sheriff's Office and asks him to meet them at the hospital.

When they get to the hospital, the woman is checked over and interviewed by the investigator. She asks that Alex stays with her. She's terrified that the men who kidnapped her will come looking for her. He assures her that he will keep her safe. For some reason she feels like she can trust Alex.

*** Possibly very minor spoilers. Usually things that are already mentioned in the description or within the first few pages of the book.

The doctor says that she has a type of amnesia but that her memory will come back in time. She decides to go back to the cabin with Alex, who tells her she can stay with him as long as she needs. The police don't have much to go on as they don't even know their victim's first name. Alex decides to call her Rainy until they can find out who she really is.

All of this is bringing up old memories for Alex and we learn of a woman from his past, Ellie. He feels he wasn't there for Ellie but he vows he will be there for Rainy. She is desperate to find out who she really is. Alex hopes he can make up for his past mistakes by protecting and helping Rainy.

Interspersed throughout the book are letters from a mother to her daughter. The letters start in 1987 and are dated every year on the daughter's birthday. We are given more information with each letter. The letters are heartbreaking. You can feel the mother's love and the agony of missing her child in each letter. The author makes you feel that pain and so many other emotions with her writing. I thought the letters were a great way of explaining some of what happened in the past from the mother's perspective.

I really enjoyed this book. I found the author's writing style easy to follow. I liked reading both Alex and Rainy's perspective. A suspenseful read with a great plot and well-developed characters that I came to care about. I was very invested in the story and anxious to know how it was going to end. Overall, this was a solid and entertaining novel that I quickly devoured.

I am really looking forward to more from this author. Hopefully book two isn't too far off.

Thank you, Pamela Humphrey for providing me with an advanced copy to read and review.

A woman wakes up alone in the back of a van. She does not remember who she is or how she got there. She is finally able to escape and finds herself at the Cabin of a man named Alex. She tells him she has been kidnapped and her kidnappers are pursuing her. Alex brings her in, gets her medical treatment and calls the police.

Slowly she begins to remember bits and pieces of her past. She begins to be called Rainy by Alex. Since she feels safe with Alex, after receiving medical treatment, she goes back to Alex's cabin to stay with him. She slowly tries to piece together who she is and what happened the night she was kidnapped. Alex attempts to assist her, but he is also dealing with his own personal loss. He has retreated to his cabin to morn a loss and having Rainy there stirs memories, but also helps him make attempts to move on. The entire time, there is the threat that the kidnappers will find her.

The book is also laced with letters written by a Mother intended for her kidnapped daughter, Claire. I thought this was a very nice touch. The book is told both in the present day but also told in the past. The story in the past is the story of the woman whose daughter was kidnapped and the circumstances surrounding the child's disappearance.

This book has touches of romance, mystery, and suspense. The book also deals with family secrets, grief, loss, kidnapping, and second chances. I enjoyed this book. It took a little bit of time for me to get into this book, but once grabbed, this book kept my attention. There is nothing really graphic or hardcore in this book, so it should appeal to a wide array of readers.

Received from the Author in exchange for an honest review.

The beginning of the book is a little cliche if you read the description but for me it was a great mystery immediately.

She wakes up in the back of a van, and her whole world changes. mystery-outline-woman
The author sets up the character in a weak and semi-altered state. She is confused and has no memory. The part where she finds herself at Alex's house is where it begins to really cook! The Texas Hill County is where the plot thickens. If you are a fans of a good intriguing mystery, then please grab this one. I was consumed with it. Injured and afraid—yes but it is not graphic, just good writing!

Personally the way the author wrote Rainy and Alex as best friends was the icing on my cupcake. While things can be moving in a way you like, here comes Rainy with the common sense attitude. Sometimes he annoyed me. I wanted Alex to grow and trust, so when he was all in right away, I was happy while the doubters started to come out of the woodwork.

Overall it is a worthwhile read. There is a lot of small town type characters for you to love. I am so anticipating more from the author and the series. Way to go Pamela!

From the moment I began reading this book, I couldn't stop. Maybe that sounds cliche, but if I tell you that the book opens with a woman who's been kidnapped and is in the back of the van with no memory of who she is but a picture she has that says "Claire" on it, would that pique your interest?

Pamela Humphrey certainly knows how to write to keep the reader gripped from page one. This mystery lady escapes from her captors, only to stumble across the cabin of Alex, who comes to act as her protector but has his own demons haunting him.

A suspense romance, this book keeps the reader guessing what's going to happen next as "Rainy" (the lady who was kidnapped and nicknamed by Alex) and Alex begin to fall in love. Will the men responsible for kidnapping her be caught? Why did they kidnap her in the first place? What's her connection to Claire? Who is Claire?

Saying too much would ruin the book, so I won't, but I definitely recommend this one. By the end, I was crying -- whether tears of happiness or sadness, I won't say. I'll leave that for you to find out...because you have to read this book!

this was surprisingly good. I enjoyed it. would like to continue with the series possibly.

a couple things that I didn't like: the overly dramatic retelling of her 'traumatic encounter'. also the amnesia inducing 'trauma' seamed to me to be blown out of proportion. I really felt like nothing really happened to her. she really just gets locked in a closet for a day, and then runs thru the dark, into cacti. I feel like her escape was much more traumatic.
then in the beginning, the 'friends' of the hero completely flip out about the hero wanting to shelter the h. like they harp on and on, repeating the same warning over and over. I mean really, the guy is a grown man. the ' best friend'/ sheriff (who in my opinion should have had a similar opinion to the H) was highly suspicious and irritated by the victim of this crime, and hardly did any investigation into the crime. later in the story, after seeing the H smile at the h, these beasties flip a 180, and suddenly start pressuring the H and h to stay together. they knew each other a week.
yeah.
just some things that made me strain an eye muscle or two, rolling them so hard.
overall I enjoyed the story. the H was an interesting character. fiercely protective, dealing with unresolved grief and guilt, hiding out from the world. he was also not the typical knuckle dragging, face first into violence type of guy. it was nice to read about him. the main mystery was a bit boring in the end, and the side characters were annoying more than anything. the cat was fun.
but I have say the best thing about this book were the letters/ story told by "mommy and daddy". as the story unfolded every time the story would break away from that, I would be a bit annoyed. they really sucked me in.

This book is kind of hard to summarize without giving anything away…but I am going to try! Finding Claire finds our main character, Rainy, escaping from her captors. She is injured, cold, and has no idea who she is, when she ends up on Alex’s doorstep in the middle of the night. Alex takes her in, rushes her to the hospital and calls in his best friend, who happens to be a detective. Rainy grows increasingly attached to the man who came to her rescue. As they delve into the mystery that brought Rainy to Alex’s door, the two uncover not only what the past holds, but what the future might have in plan for them together. This story is told in multiple points of view, Rainy and Alex, but also includes letters for Claire written by her mother as she unfolds the events of her past.

I absolutely LOVED this book! I knew after reading the synopsis that this book was right up my alley. Humphrey creates a beautifully enchanting mystery that had me drawn from the beginning. I loved everything from the characters, to the storyline, to the flow of this book! Finding Claire has the perfect tempo…it’s story unravels at the perfect speed to keep you entertained until the end. There were just so many elements that connected well within this story. You have the story of Alex and Rainy, Claire, and Claire’s mother. Past and present. All of these different stories come together to produce a spectacular novel. It has twists and turns at every point, although I must say that the ending wasn’t necessarily a surprise to me, but the way it unfolds is well done!

Rainy’s character is extremely relatable. If put in the situation I probably would have handled things the exact same way. When we meet Rainy she is shy and timid. Having no memory before the kidnapping she is very nervous about who to trust, and she clings to Alex. However, she doesn’t trust herself in her bond with Alex outside of him being a savior. As the story unfolds we get to see Rainy come back into her own. We get to see her character develop into a strong woman.

Alex is a guy who has shut everyone out. He lost his wife a couple years prior, and has moved to the middle of nowhere to get away from having to deal with the past. But when Rainy appears on his doorstep one night he must take on the role of protector. I loved Alex, he has been through so much and watching his character blossom and get a handle on his past as the book goes on was truly great.

Overall, this book is a tale of finding out the mysteries of the past, and falling in love with parts of your life you didn’t expect. I recommend you take the journey with Rainy and Alex as they explore not only their pasts but also their future together. This book really just is the perfect combination of everything I love…romance and mystery, strong and weak, happy and heartbreaking. I very much suggest picking this book up and giving it a read! I can’t wait to see what comes next in this series!

I loved the overall premise of this novel, although I think that the climax/conclusion became rather predictable very early on in the novel. Despite that, this was an entertaining and engaging suspense thriller mixed with romance, love and loss. The subplot of trying to figure out “Claire’s” identity flowed well with the investigation regarding Rainy’s disappearance, and also revealed secrets from this small town’s past and tragic events that had happened many years earlier. What was interesting is the times that I felt most nervous or in suspense, ended up being perfectly fine, such as when Rainy was at Travis’ office. I was convinced something was very wrong, but it wasn’t! I love that the author was able to continue a roller coaster of suspense from beginning to end, but also not make things completely frustrating. I especially loved Claire’s mother’s letters over the years. I can’t go into detail without spoilers, but it prompted several tissue-worthy moments that also added to the mystery of the novel.

If I remember correctly, the author plans to continue Alex and Rainy’s story, and I absolutely cannot wait to read more. I’ve already downloaded the short story about DJ’s wife, Becca, and cannot wait to find out more about Alex and Rainy. If you have not yet read Pamela Humphrey, she needs to be added to your list of author’s to watch. She embodies wonderful storytelling skills and reels you in from the first paragraph.

WOW. Just WOW! I was not expecting that or this. I got myself a gem. I got multiple POV, a hero that was selfless, an mysterious woman that knows not who she is, where she is, and much of anything else. There was back and forth, past and present, there was his, hers and theirs. This was layered with more than you would imagine. There was the underling mystery. Do you want to solve it or do you want to just have some peace.

I don't want to over analyze the read. It was compelling and spellbinding. It captivated you and drew you to the lives of the people involved both past and present. It gave you common ground to stand on and then allowed you to sink in further and open more of the things lost or just blurred.

An interesting missing persons case that shifts from 1st to 3rd person narrative; and about thirty year shift(s). No language or intimate situations.

It only seems to come as ebook, and I hope the sequel comes at a sale price sometime soon.

Intriguing. Tender. Fulfilling. There were a couple of things I had to buy into in order to move the story along for me, but I'm glad I did. I can't say I was surprised by the ending, but it made the story satisfying. I appreciate that it was a clean read.

Right up front, I'll admit that this author is my treasured niece. That being said, about three pages in, I forgot that I was reading my "niece's book" and just wanted to know who Kate was, and what did she have to do with Claire? This book defies categories. I'd call it a mystery for sure, but it's also a love story, and a story about how love triumphs through perseverance. Grab tissues at the end. Just when you think you have it figured out, there is more...

This is a rich, heartwarming story of love, loss, and triumph, a love story wrapped in a murder mystery nestled against a pair of kidnappings and lost memories/identities. Partly epistolary, partly first person, and partly third, the blend of voices and styles allows for a deeper knowledge of the characters and permits the story to unfold gracefully as more details and facts and personalities are layered into an exquisite confection.

Disclaimer: "I received this book for free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review." Having already read the prequel, "The Wrong Path," a short story/novella about another couple in the book (other than that link the books each stand entirely on their own), I knew I wanted to read more by Ms. Humphrey and was delighted to get the opportunity. My faith was not misplaced!

I enjoyed the story but a few things niggled at me so I marked it fewer stars.

1. I knew straight off she was Claire.
2. When she had forgot she’d mention random stuff no one would pick up on.
3. No guy acts like that after a week, much less a day.

There was too much fate for me in this book. Although it is an original story, which I like.

I’d give it a read, not everyone’s as picky as me.

Plus I’m in love with Emma and Travis love story.

Hill Country Secrets:
I chain read these three stories and couldn't put any of them down until I was finished. It helps to read Just A Friend before reading Finding Kate, but it's not necessary.

The Wrong Path, #0 - I enjoyed this short story. It was well written, shocking and funny. The characters were just introductions so it would take a longer story to know more about them. The author did do a good job of describing them and the events as they unfolded. Perfect for a coffee break or a few minutes relaxation. 5*

Finding Claire #1 - Mesmerizing! Heartbreaking! I dislike stories about kidnappings, but this one was written in a way that was beautiful and heartbreaking. The kidnapping was just a foundation for a wonderful story. This book is a fast paced, well written suspense with realistic characters and dialogue and an interesting plot. This is the first story I've read by this author and I'm looking forward to reading Finding Kate. Library. 5*

Finding Kate #2 - Heartwarming. Finding Kate picks up where Finding Claire stops. I really recommend reading FC first. Another well written, suspense-filled story with believable characters, realistic dialogue and a twisting plot. This story is a fast paced, action packed thriller. I contacted the author to review her books. 5*

Just A Friend (#1.5?) - What can you say? This story started great and then, the truth appeared. A well written, but quickly read short story about young love and life; it brings strong emotions out in the reader. I read Finding Kate next and discovered this story is part of Finding Kate and then, I understood the abrupt ending of JAF. 5*

Finding Treasure #3 - Heartwarming and full of happy surprises. This has been an interesting series to read. FT is easy to get immersed into and the bits of Texas history seen through an early Texian's eyes add to the richness of the story. There's more than one mystery going on, both past and present, and the story lines are well thought out and interesting. The characters keep the reader interested in them and their stories; and it's great when an author actually knows Texas and can make it a character on its own. As with Ms. Humphrey's other books, this one is rich in multiple stories while sharing the past, which brings in the writer's love of genealogy. Other than lower case Internet, the book is well edited. 5*

The Chase #4 - I wish I could have read The Chase side-by-side with Finding Treasure. I had read eight percent before I had gotten FT and started it; so it was interesting to see the parts mesh. The mesh didn't last long and The Chase took off on its own two feet running. The story is interesting, along with the characters. I did find Marissa a little too extreme; after what she had gone through with Paul, it seems her personality was altered too much into irrational behavior. But she has good taste in reading material. Interesting romance with a very good, suspenseful story line and vivid descriptions keep the reader immersed to the last page. 5*
Hill Country Secrets end.

The Blue Reboso - Another heartwarming, interesting story using an ancestor from the author's own family as the main character. There are two actually, the Reboso plays a important part in the story. Well written and interesting in the telling of time history and the perils and struggles faced by people then. The characters are developed enough to be interesting and you root for them. The storyline is well developed and I feel I'm there with the family as the story unfolds. A job well done with blending fact and fiction. I love that it is set in Texas, is accurate and is told by an Hispanic. It is always interesting to read how all people have to deal with life. This is an author I enjoy, having read several of her stories, and I always look forward to reading more of her entertaining work. 5*
