Surviving an EMP when you're not a Navy Seal or a prepper. Ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances.
After several attacks on the unfinished settlement at Tabernacle, Nick Mercator argues that hunkering down is not the answer. There will never be enough ideas and skills inside the walls to remake their world. A chance encounter with a dying invader presents both a spiritual dilemma and an opportunity to act on his beliefs.
The subsequent recruiting mission to a beleaguered town goes badly when an army of marauders attacks its helpless citizens. Saving them will require the reluctant leaders at Tabernacle to send help. Even that won’t resolve Nick’s moral issue, however. He can find peace only by taking on an even more perilous task.
Sometimes, thinking outside the box is all about what we have inside…
This series is so well written! The story lines inside this boom will keep you wanting more. But the important thing is that this series brings up something about survival in a long term grid down situation that msny books do not address. That is not the need for communities to survive, but the longer term need in actually rebuilding scoiety and the ability to start converting raw materials into useable items. Much of this knowledge has been lost to the vast majority of America and it will take manpoer with diversified knowledge and the ability to research to regain the tech to start converting raw materials into needed building materrials and survival matetials .
It has been a little while since I read book 2, but I think that the author's writing has improved and I liked this story. It does bog down at times especially with Nick's angst over a woman's reaction to hearing her husband is dead, but there is also a lot of action and ends with a good segue to the next book. I like that these people are thrown together without much preparation and are working together to survive. I also like learning about some of the particular issues that they face and how they are solving them.
