They aren’t the kind of women anyone misses. Truck-stop hookers, runaways . . . no one would even notice they’d disappeared if the killer didn’t photograph their lifeless bodies, posed in the back of a semi-trailer. Exactly like the infamous Trucker murders. But this isn’t just a copycat. It’s a vendetta.
NOW HE’LL TEACH HER
Carmen Jacobs interviewed the world’s most terrifying serial killers for her bestselling book, The Heart of a Predator. The police might not believe her, but she knows there’s a monster out there, paying homage to other murderers. The only person who can predict where he’ll strike next is Griffin Archer—a reclusive software millionaire with ample reason not to help her.
HOW TO DIE . . .
Carmen has charmed her way past Griffin’s defenses before. He didn’t intend to let it happen again. But with a psycho sending her trophies of his kills, he has no choice but to get involved. The clues point to a killer obsessed with Carmen—someone who knows her work, her past, her secrets. Someone who won’t be satisfied until he has made all her deepest fears come true . . .
I'm not exactly sure when I fell in love with books. Probably on my mother's knee listening to her read Dr. Seuss to me. I do remember that I was barely old enough to cross the street by myself when I discovered the delights of the local library. Could anything be more wonderful than spending summer days surrounded by stacks of Nancy Drew mysteries? Over the years I fell in love with Victoria Holt, Jane Austen, Agatha Christie, and J.R.R. Tolkien just to name a few. I read poetry, essays, biographies, and plays. In fact, I read anything I could get my hands on.
Years later (no, I'm not admitting how many) I'm still an avid reader, and my tastes are still as varied as they were in my youth, which I suppose helps to explain why I enjoy writing regency historicals under the name of Deborah Raleigh, as well as my contemporary paranormals as Alexandra Ivy. For now that is enough to keep me busy, but who knows what the future might hold!
I do have a few other loves in my life besides reading and writing, the most important being my unbelievably patient husband, David, and my two sons, Chance and Alexander. Without their constant support and belief in me, I never could have been able to follow my dreams. They are truly my heroes.
What Are You Afraid Of? by Alexandra Ivy is the second book in the romantic suspense The Agency series. While this is the second book in the series it contains all new characters and a new killer so it can be read fine as a standalone novel if one chooses to do so.
In this addition to the series Carmen Jacobs has written a best selling novel about serial killers after interviewing them. She’s off in a remote cabin vacationing when an envelope shows up on the porch. When opened Carmen finds Polaroids of victims that resemble the murders from one of the killers in her book but these photos were not used in his case.
Carmen thinks that there very well may be new victims out there and possibly a new killer so she contacts the local police only to have them think it’s a publicity stunt for her to sell more books. Knowing something sinister is going on Carmen contacts Griffin Archer and enlists his help finding this new killer before the killer comes after Carmen.
Now to explain my rating on What Are You Afraid Of?… There’s nothing particularly wrong with this book, it’s a typical romantic suspense with the couple coming together while avoiding danger. We have a serial killer on the loose to find and a couple with decent chemistry for some steamy moments but when finished with this one I just felt that while all the boxes were checked it didn’t really stand out and wow me either. To be honest the wrap up even felt a bit standard and I suppose what I wanted was a bit more twists and turns to keep me guessing but instead was led straight to the end leading to a bit of a let down so while it was OK I dare say it may be a bit forgettable too.
I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.
Carmen Jacobs lost her parents at a young age to a tragic incident crime. She is now an investigative journalist who has written a book about serial killers and what leads them to do what they do and the MO that they used.
Some killer with his kill club has decided to take on the task to copy the killings. Not a true copycat though. When she receives photos of what the trucker killer did she goes to the authorities. She doesn’t receive a warm welcome as they think that it is a stunt to promote her book. She then goes to the one person who doesn’t want to help her but she trusts. Griffin Archer.
Griffin Archer high tech billionaire never expected to see Carmen again but this time it is different. She begs for his help. He is a genius and a recluse but in the end he can’t help but go after Carmen who is following a clue in Kansas City.
It is a cat and mouse game. Where family lies, betrayals and secrets come to light. Where the author shows us that one of the seven deadly sins and sick psychopaths leads to a killing spree of epic proportions.
Who doesn’t like a romantic suspense book with a good old serial plot? Well I do. I just didn’t like this one.
It started off strong and with all Ms. Ivy’s books somewhere along the way I lost interest and got bored. I don’t know why I do it to myself. Glutton for punishment maybe?
I most certainly am in the minority here because the book is engaging. It is well written and it has a strong plot with solid characters. So why didn’t I like it? To be honest I really do not know.
I predicted a lot of who it all was and what really happened to Carmen’s parents. I had a feeling who it could be and who he was working with. I really do not know if I will read any more of the books in this series.
Carmen Jacobs is the author of HEART OF A PREDATOR which is based on interviews Carmen has conducted with mass murderers in prison. Griffin Archer is a high tech genius with law enforcement software used to find the bad guys. Ivy has developed two characters who must hunt down a killer who is leaving clues to his next gruesome plot. Pages reveal how our lives can be traced and that death awaits around the corner. Violence is not just hinted at so WHAT ARE YOU AFRAID OF? may not be tolerable to some. A weaving of many possible suspects although I had this one figured out. "A copy of this book was provided by Kennington Books via Netgalley with no requirements for a review. Comments here are my honest opinion."
I thoroughly enjoyed this chilling view of exactly just how twisted killers can be. This story focuses on Carmen, an investigative journalist whose had a book published looking at just why some serial killers do what they do. As she prepares for her book to finally be published in paperback she's completely unaware that someone is plotting to bring the grisly murders from her book to life. A package arrives that has Carmen seeking help but the authorities don't believe her so she seeks help from a tech genius who knows his way around computers. Unfortunately Griffin isn't exactly bowled over by Carmen as she previously misled him but even he starts to realise that someone is obsessed with Carmen and it's apparent that she's in danger ! Ok I'm not going to go into details about the plot because it's very different to other suspense stories I've read and I've no wish to spoil my fellow readers fun. I will say that even though there's a romance happening here it's not glorified or used to titilate but actually just enhances the story that focuses on serial killing. This book all connects back to Carmen and her childhood as a demented killer slowly stalks her but sometimes the enemy is hiding in plain sight. A page turner if ever there was one with twists at the end that made it a very satisfying read. This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair
I’m trying to figure out how best to describe how I felt once I finished What Are You Afraid Of? besides wow. It was an edge-of-your-seat read for me that was hard to put down and made me think in more ways than one. Here is my thought process.
First wow: The characters Carmen and Griffin. I’m not always too found of quick romances, but in this case, knowing there was a history of sorts between them, I’m going to let it slide. She’s a journalist and he creates software. Definitely, opposites are attracting here. I liked the chemistry between them and how their romance doesn’t overtake the story. Instead, it enhances it and adds flavor.
Next is the killer because it is an even bigger wow. I’m chanting to myself “Don’t give it away! Don’t give it away!” because this was simply delicious. Okay, I may have guessed before the ending who was killing the women. Let me rephrase, who was behind the killings. Their deaths, the killer, the whodunit was so multi-leveled that even if I knew who the killer was from the beginning, the ultimate reasons why at the end still would have blown me away.
Second wow: The plot A journalist who writes a book about serial killers that eventually is stalked by a copycat serial killer that mimics the killers in her book. Is that karma being a bi-otch or was this always to be Carmen’s destiny? Again, I’m chanting “Don’t give it away!” It certainly seems ironic that here Carmen writes a book, which makes her non gratis with the police and now has to seek help from the very man she semi-played to write the book in the first place, Griffin.
Everything about the plot was exciting. The chase, the mystery, romance, the whole cat and mouse from beginning to end kept me sneaking in reads when I should have been doing other things. All the twist and turns are provided not only from Carmen and Griffin trying to find the killer but also from the killer’s perspective as well. That, in itself, made for some creepy stuff.
My final wow: The concept I like a story I can sink my teeth into. I like even more a story that will make me think. Not in the figuring out who the killer is but applying this to real life. I’ve never given much thought to true crime stories and their writers. What Are You Afraid Of? certainly had me thinking about them. Do real authors experience loathing by the police? What does it take to be a writer of these kinds of books? Do they get hate mail from victims and love letters from the wannabes? Author Alexandra Ivy has given me quite a bit of food for thought with What Are You Afraid Of? This is going to be a book that is going to linger in my mind for quite some time.
This story was so damn good! Right from page one, I was engaged and invested in the story. The suspense was killing me. I HAD to know "who done it", and I couldn't put this book down until I reached the last page.
Great writing, story-line, and characters.
I highly recommend this book.
"I voluntary read a copy of this book which was provided by the publisher via Netgalley."
What Are You Afraid of? by Alexandra Ivy. Book Two in The Agency Series.
Holy Smokes, What a ride. WHAT. A. RIDE! I am not even sure I can put into words how I feel, this was beyond creepy. lol. I thought the first one was creepy, but I think this was more like goose bumps thrilling. You can read this as a standalone, but you will want to go back and read the first one, which I loved more then this one. I still really enjoyed this, but not as I did the first one.
This book follows Carmen Jacobs and Griffin and the "Hunter"
Alexandra Ivy has such wonderful talent pulling the reader into her worlds, keeps us engaged and pulls the rug out from under your feet. You most defiantly don't want to miss out on this suspense mystery. The romance in this novel is not the forefront of the story, its there simmering in the background but not the main focus. I enjoy personally a little more romance, but for you readers that don't you will love this.
Griffin is a software millionaire and Carmen is a investigative journalist she has recently written a book about 5 of Americas worst psycho killers. And it seems she has interested a new killer that now has his eye on the prize. He is the HUNTER!
Carmen turns to Griff for help, and from there we bask into secrets unveiled and killers who want them both dead, but why? With plenty of things being uncovered and truths are revealed, but are they the real truth? Who can you trust? family or foe?
The scenes from the Hunters perspective are pretty gruesome and pretty graphic, I was on the edge on my chair at times. I didn't see all the twist and turns, the last 40% was intense. I loved it, I was shook!
Plot, characters and the writing is perfect, it is very twisted and it read fast. it makes you keep guessing, lots of suspects and until the very end you wont know what the heck is happening. Its so good!
I am not going to go into the blurb too much, or anything else as I went into this bind and I think it is the perfect way to do so.
Trust me when you pick this chilling thriller up you will not put it down till the end.
Carmen Jacobs is an investigative reporter who interviewed 5 serial killers to write her very successful book. She's on vacation in a remote cabin when she discovers an envelope on her porch. Inside the envelope are pictures very similar to the ones she used in her book. She attempts to get the police involved but due to taking law enforcement to task for not doing a better/quicker job bringing down these killers, they aren't interested. So, she goes to the one person she knows can help her, even if he won't be too happy to see her.
Griffin Archer is a computer genius with a billion dollar tech company specializing in cutting edge software for law enforcement. He is an introvert, a behind the scenes guy, while his partner, Rylan, and his best friend, does the sales and PR.
This book just didn't flow that well for me. I didn't feel a real connection between Griff and Carmen. Griff seemed to change his feelings for her too easily and they slid straight to deep feelings. I guessed who the bad guys were early on. The action was ok, the romance meh at best, making this a not very memorable book.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC provided by NetGalley and the author.
Pretend You're Safe by Alexandra Ivy is the 2nd in The Agency series.
Series Background: (Warning – May contain spoilers from previous books)
Griffin Archer and Rylan Cooper run a software development company that provide security solutions to law enforcement and government agencies. Griff works out of California, but Rylan recently moved back to Missouri to marry Jaci. He is now commuting.
My Synopsis: (No major reveals, but if concerned, skip to My Opinions)
Carmen Jacobs is a journalist, whose best-selling book told the story of five serial killers who she interviewed in prison. One of them, was Scott Daniels, who raped, tortured and killed hookers inside his semi, and dumped the bodies. When Carmen receives a package with photo's of dead women, similar to Daniels victims, she knows there is a copycat out there. But the police don't believe her.
She goes to Griff, who she had tried to interview at one point, but had been refused. He doesn't make it easy for her this time either. But eventually, Griff realizes that Carmen herself is in danger. He is also realizing that his feelings toward her are intense. He will do whatever it takes to keep her safe. But finding this copycat killer is not easy, and he has a feeling it may involve her estranged family, although Carmen cannot understand how or why.
My Opinions:
Okay, yes, this second book also has a romance angle in it, of which I am not a fan. However, these books have good plots, and good writing, so I can overlook the romance. (That, and the sexual tension is a little hot -- hey don't judge me -- you are never too old to appreciate it).
This was another entertaining read, with a fast pace, and lots of suspects. Although it didn't exactly WOW me, it was still a decent book. I don't think any of the books in this series are going to be very deep, but, I will continue reading them, because sometimes you just need something a little lighter.
Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) provided by the Author and Publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an fair and honest review.
The first book in this series was very intense. I hope this 2nd book can live up to that. I have a mental checklist for what makes a 5-Star read and this book lives up to all of them. The characters are believable - check. The characters exhibit depth and growth - check. The romance is intense and true - check. The plot works - double check.
Carmen Jacobs is secluded at a cabin in the snowy Rockies trying to unwind and decompress after a year on the road for her bestselling book tour. She is also hiding from the holidays because she has no one to celebrate with. Polaroid pictures of dead women and a threatening note find their way to he porch. The local police are less that concerned. Carmen is freaked because they are copycat killings from a serial killer she profiled from her book.
When Carmen Jacobs first approached Griffin Archer, a reclusive software millionaire, he thought she was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen. When he found out what she really wanted, he sent him packing. Not she's back and begging for his help. Just what his wet dreams were about, this hot, beautiful woman on her knees in front of him, except, he never dreamed she would be begging for his help. He sends her packing, again, but after some computer investigating, he decides that she just might be in danger and she is one woman he just can't get out of his mind, so he follows her.
Carmen wrote a book about serial killers but now someone is going through it and copying their methods. Is she on the list of their kill club? She isn't taken seriously by the police so she goes to the one man who might be able to help her. Griffin is a computer genius who can find just about anything, including who might be behind the threats she's getting. I enjoyed this books with its surprising twists and turns. And it had the happy ending I am always looking for.
This is exactly the type of book I love to read and Alexandra Ivy has been a long-time favorite of mine. This is the second book in The Agency series that featured Carmen Jacobs and Griffen Archer. I really liked these two characters and thought they worked well together. I really do need to find myself a Griffen! The book was suspenseful and chilling. The ending I did not see coming which I totally appreciate.

Carmen is a writer and wrote a best seller about serial killers. When she was a child, her father killed her mother and then himself, leaving her with her mother’s parents. Now someone is copying the killers in her book. The killer is sending photographs of murdered women. She goes to the police but no one believes her. She goes to Griff, a computer expert for help. She tricked him while she was writing his book to find out about the program he wrote for the authorities to catch killers. Griff is still mad about being duped, he turns Carmen away but then goes after her. He decides to stick by her when she starts getting more photos and is cut by a stranger. The longer they are together, the harder he falls for her. But when she’s taken right out of his house, he’ll do anything to get her back. Extremely suspenseful. This will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat. Secrets are uncovered and truths are revealed. A little steamy but more action and suspense. I don’t want to give too much away but I hope people will understand what I’ve wrote and read this story. It will leave you thinking “ OMG “ * Voluntarily read and reviewed this for Netgalley *
Just as Carmen Jacobs best seller book abut 5 serial killers is about to come out in paperback she receives pictures of women who appear to be dead. Some of them were used in the trial of the killer called the Trucker, but there are 3 that were not. There is also a mysterious note in the envelope with the pictures. The police are convinced it is a publicity stunt to help with sales of her book. Carmen turns to the one man who wants nothing to do with her, Griffin Archer. It seems someone is copying the serial killers in her book.
There are some very twisted characters in this book and they are obsessed with Carmen. The plot is great with suspense that kept me turning the pages. There was also a romance, but it wasn’t the main focus of the story. The author did a good job of keeping you guessing who the bad guy is, there are plenty of suspects. I guessed part of it but still was fooled by the twist. This is the second book of a series but could be read on its own. Thank you to net galley for an advanced readers copy.
I received ad advanced copy through Netgalley in exchange an honest review.
I recently read Pretend You're Safe, so I was excited to read the next installment of the series. This story centered on Griff (Rylan's business partner from Pretend You're Safe) and Carmen. Carmen is a successful writer who starts receiving gifts from a group of serial killers based on killers from her book. Carmen turns to Griff for help when the local police do not take her seriously. They work together and travel across several states to try to get a step ahead of the killer. Of course of their time together, Griff and Carmen develop a really sweet relationship. Even though there are scenes from the victim and killers' POVs, they aren't incredibly graphic. The book has a nice balance of suspense/thriller and light moments.
I've really liked Alexandra Ivy's couples in this series. The relationship development is a little more realistic than some other books I've read. I also appreciate that her male characters are not controlling alpha-males. Maybe the next book will move on to Nikki at the FBI?
Griff knows how to give his woman that awe in her life, "Griff stepped closer, watching as her face softened with shocked pleasure at the sight of the gold bracelet with antique charms that was nestled into the ivory satin. “Oh, Griff.” She lightly touched a charm in the shape of a seashell with a dusting of tiny diamonds. “It’s perfect.” Griff likes to be honest, “it wasn’t,” he assured her in a gruff voice. “I’ve endured more restless nights and cold showers since I met you than I have in my entire life.” I liked this book, I loved Griff.
The Agency #2, Another great romantic suspense from Alexandra Ivy. What Are You Afraid Of? is book two of The Agency series which can be read as a stand alone. Griffin Archer sexy computer geek, software programmer, millionaire and delicate looking but tough journalist Carmen Jacobs whose claim to fame is her true crime non fiction Heart of the Predator in which she interviewed five serial killers and went over their cases. Carmen is on a well deserved break from her book tour in an isolated cabin in the woods. No one is suppose to know where she is and her publisher isn't suppose to forward any mail but that doesn't stop them a large brown envelope appears on her doorstep and as much as she want to ignore it she is curious by nature and opens it. Inside she finds fightenly familiar pictures, pictures so similar to the first serial killer in her book, but it couldn't be him he was already dead. When the local police won't take her seriously she knew of one person who could help her as long as he still didn't hate her.
Griffin knew Carmen was in trouble the moment he saw her, if her constant attempts to call him wasn't a dead giveaway her pale complexion and the terrified look on her face was. After the way they parted company the last time he knew it must be serious if she asking for his help, but even after she explains there might be a copycat killer out there he still was hesitant to help her. It's not until after she leaves to continue on her own does he realize that another thing the victim all have in common, they all look like Carmen. Griffin gives a friend at the FBI a heads up about what happening, and he starts checking things on his own. It escalates when Carmen receives a bouquet of flowers with an old nickname on them. Griffin thinks this is more personal than even Carmen realizes and starts asking questions about her past and the murder suicide of her parents.
The relationship between Carmen and Griffin starts off rocky. When they first met, in events before the book starts back when Carmen was still in the process of writing her book, she wanted to interview Griffin because he wrote the program that assisted the police in apprehending on of the serial killers she was writing about but he wouldn't do it. Carmen managed a "chance" meeting and they got close but then Griffin found out who she was it didn't end nicely. Despite all that Griffin is still insanely attracted to Carmen and when he realizes she is the focus of the copycat his protective instincts kicks into overdrive. Griffin is willing to do anything to protect Carmen catch the copycat and prove to Carmen he's worth the risk of loving.
Overall, I really enjoyed this one it really hit the spot. I like Ivy's writing, she does fantastic with the suspense and the whodunnit, she kept me guessing. She always transports me into the story and I just can't put it down.
Alexandra Ivy has done it again! The Agency’s second book is a spine chilling suspense that will holding your breath in anticipation.
Griffin and Carmen are two very strong characters that easily draw readers into their story and are easily related to. Their relationship starts off on a slippery slope but grows stronger and hotter as they fight for their lives, and the story is full of emotional turbulence which holds readers tightly in their grip. Carmen faces some hard truths and she discovers just what learning about killers has done to her life as comes face to face with disbelief, mistrust the one man who has ample reason to dislike her.
The fast paced plot keeps suspense and anticipation building throughout the story keeping chills rocking reader’s spines as the killer plaques the couple with doubts and fears by ensuring that Carmen knows that he understands her and knows all her secrets. Readers find themselves glued to the pages to find out what happens next as surprising twists keeps everyone on their toes.
Alexandra Ivy always produces well thought and defined out plots that keep readers guessing and holds them captive throughout each story and the characters are always life like and well developed. What Are You Afraid Of? is another exhilarating example of her romantic suspense stories, it held be captivated from the first chapter until the very end and even had me wondering what I was afraid of? I am certainly looking forward to the next book by Alexandra Ivy.
After finishing Knives and Kisses, I was really tempted to read a library book or something new from KU, but I felt guilty about that since I thought I should be reading something I’ve already had for awhile as that’s something I’m trying to do this year. I was really worried that if I spent too much time looking for something though, that I would just go back to that awful restless feeling that I’ve been in for like two years, so I decided to just pick a letter at random in my kindle app. The first book didn’t pan out, but either I accidentally clicked on the As section of my phone kindle app or it just took me there, but either way, I saw Alexandra Ivy’s What Are You Afraid Of? and as you can see, it worked out!
Before What Are You Afraid Of? I was only familiar with Alexandra Ivy through her paranormal books, but when I saw that she also ventured into romantic suspense, I was interested right away as it’s one of my favorite sub-genres of romance. So I got What Are You Afraid Of? and it only took me like six/seven years to read it… I’m facepalming right now. I don’t know why I didn’t read it at the time because I loved it from the jump now, so I’m sure I would have felt the same way, but I suppose there’s no point in wondering about it now. I finished it and enjoyed it and that’s the most important thing!
What Are You Afraid Of? was a wild ride from start to finish. I had tons of theories and predictions some of which turned out to be true and there were definitely times where Alexandra Ivy surprised me as well. This was fun and entertaining and I think if you’re a fan of romantic suspense, you’ll enjoy this and it will keep your interest. It was a fantastic read and I had an awesome time reading it! I’ll definitely check out more of Alexandra Ivy’s romantic suspenses in the future!
This was a quick read for me. I have not read the first book but you don't have to read this book. I really enjoyed Griffin and Carmen. Poor Carmen has a lot of messed up people in her past that come back to haunt her. Griffin is her rock even if he doesn't want to be at first. Griffin is someone I would want to date in real life, too bad he is only in a book. Someone is stalking Carmen and she turns to Griffin for help. The story evolves quickly as in less than a week everything happens. I did enjoy the book. I would read more in this series or by the author.
*Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to read this for my honest opinion*
There was nothing wrong with this romantic suspense but it also didn't have anything particularly memorable about it either. It was a typical RS book with a serial killer hunting the heroine and the hero trying to keep her safe while they tried to discover the killer's identity. The book pretty much laid out exactly who the villains were (there were more than one and I would have loved to have been kept guessing on who they were but it was obvious early on). I wanted more surprises and twists and turns then the plot provided and even the epilogue was pretty standard. So if you enjoy RS books this is a good one but not one you will particularly remember long after you've read it.
This was a fast-paced, interesting read, that I found I did not want to put down! Great, multi-faceted characters. Vivid descriptions. Kept me captivated from the first page to the last. An excellent read!

Carmen Jacobs wrote a book about serial killers. Now she has received some photos of some women who appear to be dead with a cryptic note stating are you the hunter or the prey. This book is full of suspense from the very first page until the end. If you enjoy suspense I highly recommend this series.
4.5 This was nice and creepy. I did have it figured out though pretty early . I didn't have it all figured out which was nice. Looking forward to the last book.
I adore this author. I am a total wuss for suspense books, but I put myself through it because I know this author will bring it all to the table. So amid my starts and stops and pacing---I finished. So worth the read!!
The premise alone should set you on edge. Carmen is an author and has published a book about real life serial killers. I mean....why??? Someone is sending her photos of copycat kills and she turns to the only person she knows that might help. WE met computer geek Griffen in the first book of this series.
They have a history but Carmen is determined. Hold on to your seats because what follows is a laundry list of who dunit? So many possibilities. The twisted path to get to the ending left me glued to my kindle for the last third of the story.
We have some romance along the way between Carmen and Griffen but ultimately this is a suspense novel. Grab it. Read it. It's worth your time.
