The Incubus #2
Incubus Bonded
Mal and Jessica have spent four glorious months abroad, traveling to exotic places, enjoying other people and each other. However, they’re tired of traveling, and they both miss Azrael more than they expected.
When the sorcerer shows up on their doorstep, they’re excited to see him. However, Azrael hasn’t come on a social call. He needs Mal’s magic for a difficult task. Mal isn’t willing to wear Azrael’s collar again for free, no matter how he feels about him. Mal’s price: “You. No wards. Anything I want. And Jessica gets to watch.”
Jessica has deep misgivings. A night together could be bliss…or it could be a disaster that will break hearts and ruin everyone’s chances of the home they desire. As they work together to build a magical gate, dodging hostile wizards and fairies, can Mal and Jessica gain Azrael’s fragile trust and find their way into his heart?

I was really enjoying this series up until this bit:
“Shhh.” Mal kissed his ear. “Don’t say that.” He nuzzled Azrael’s chin up and pressed a hard kiss against the pulse of his throat and then down into his collar. “Just for once, let me teach you something. Let me make you a little more human.”
So, what, asexuals and other people who can't/don't have sex aren't human? Human enough?
I wish people would THINK before they say/write shit like this. Thanks for shitting all over people who don't have sex.

November 12, 2020DNF at 5%. As much as I enjoyed the first book in the series, I also struggled with the free love and the fine line between coercion and consent. Straight out the gate with book 2 we’re confronted with coercion again. And this time, to me it feels blatant. Azrael asks for a favor from Mal. Something he really needs Mal’s help with. Mal only agrees to help on the condition that he and Azrael have a night together and Jessica gets to watch. Azrael REALLY doesn’t want to, but eventually agrees after strenuous resistance because he REALLY needs Mal’s help/magic. Even just agreeing leaves him shaking and in tears.
I don’t care if Mal and Azrael love each other, this is still emotional and sexual abuse. I have lived this, have had people I love aggressively bully me into sex. It’s gross. It’s abusive. It hurts. It destroys trust. And it’s not love or loving.
I recognize my experiences with emotional and sexual abuse affect my objectivity but I just can’t with this. I feel hurt and distressed. It’s not worth it to me. And even if Azrael ends up feeling good about his time with Mal, it still comes with a huge side of coercion so no matter the outcome, I can’t get past it. I don’t feel good about condoning or normalizing the idea that if you “love” someone it’s ok to coerce them into anything, let alone sex. I feel sick just thinking about it.

Ploughing through this series too....

I like and did not like this installment. I fell like the F of this group is left out too much. It is all about the love between the two men. Not that it is not great but it does seem like she is an afterthought not apart of the main attraction.

Erotic romance and poly relationships done well…
As I mentioned in my Incubus Caged review, I am not an avid romance reader, but have read a fair share of erotica. This series is a great blend of the two along with the addition of fantasy.
I enjoy reading books that represent parts of my own life. I’ve been in open/poly relationships most of my adult life. Having a book that positively represents a MMF relationship where it isn’t all about jealousy and cheating, is most excellent. With that all said, I’ve read some reviews calling this book “acephobic.” I disagree. I do not see Azreal as being asexual. He is sexual, to the point of being almost frightened of it in some aspects. It is because he has had to suppress this nature due to circumstance. I say this as being on that spectrum myself as I see my sexual orientation as mono-ish demi- pan- whereas my romantic orientation is poly- demi- pan-. I invite you read a bit more into this story and the motivations of characters before relying upon what I perceive to be knee-jerk reactions due to a misunderstanding in this work of fiction.
The idea of an incubus (demon) being aligned with bright magic and what that means in this world especially when it comes down to consent. It is well written and does not take the “sexiness” out of things. And that is not to say that boundaries are not pushed, but they are handled in an appropriate way that does not detract from the yum that is happening. It’s something I’d like to see more of in these kinds of stories.
I was a beta reader for this novel, but as I mentioned in the review for the first book of this series, Lauren Harris as the narrator brought this story alive with her exceptional narration. I look forward to listening to the next book in this series.

There's this author who has been writing one kind of story the entire time you have known about them. Over the years their skills have improved, and the stories have only gotten better. You fell in love with their characters, gritted your teeth as they chased their dreams and endured their nightmares. You wanted to live in their world, even though it's kind of fucked up, just because they presented it to you in such vivid, majestic detail.
And then, one day, you find out that they're writing a different book. A whole series of them, and they're a good deal different from what they were writing before. And you feel a little sad, like they were breaking up with a long-time lover. It's not permanent, they tell you, they'll write more of those books you loved, but they're experimenting with this new series, in an entirely new genre.
And then you get to read them, and you fall in love all over again.
You probably won't have heard of A H Lee before, but trust me--she brings a wealth of talent to these books. The characters are flawed, quirky and lovable. The obstacles they face have real consequences, and you wonder sometimes how anything could possibly turn out well at all.
And OH MY GOD the sex. Hot, explicit, and masterfully woven into the narrative. Meaningful for the characters, and dripping with repercussions.
That was my experience beta reading this series. Trust me--this is erotic romance at its finest.

I don't remember the quote exactly, but it was something like 'what is love, but lust with empathy and a conscience" and that is possibly the most fucked up and disgusting thing I've ever read. I can't even count the ways. Nevermind the shitty things it implies about aromantics.
But I shouldn't be surprised, I guess, since earlier in the book the incubus said something about teaching the sorcerer to be more human when speaking of the sorcerer's first time having sex (well, by that point, the first time having a dick stuck in him. they've already had sex a couple of times, unless you're one of those who thinks it only counts once a dick is getting inserted in a hole, in which you're as disgusting as this author).
I don't know if it's intentional or not, but this second book turned out seriously acephobic. since apparently aces who don't have sex are less human than other people, and aromantics who have sex do not apparently possess empathy or a conscience.
Gross gross gross, will probably never read this author again, and I'm definitely not bothering with the third book.

2.5 stars rounded up
I like this story a whole lot less than the first. Jessica was firmly in the backseat this entire book and it was so sad. I get that Mal and Ren have history and this is more their book, but Jessica gets all but forgotten in this book. I mean, she’s there the entire time, just fading into the background of all of their scenes, and all she does is worry and care for her guys and is just so happy they are together. She spends the entire book helping them love eachother and the men end up having these intense feelings of love and their thoughts just continue to circle around one another with just bread crumbs of thought for poor Jess. It’s even brought up a few times by the characters that they keep leaving her out… so the author was aware of it and just didn’t care? She never complains, even though she is never thought of first. But she always puts them first. It was extremely frustrating. I kept waiting for them to open their eyes and fawn over her, and all she’s done for them… but they just have 2-3 scenes where they remember she’s in the room with them and say one sweet thing to her and that’s it.
She saves their lives twice in this book, spends the entire book coaching Mal on how to handle Ren and she just gets nothing. Just a quick thank you or I love you, they only give her love and attention after they’ve spent the entire scene fawning over each other. No thoughts or actions of love focused on her at all. Just “oh did we get you wet while we were lost in one another? Let’s take care of that. Ahh great, now we can go back to each other.”
I’m invested in this story. So I’m going to pick up the next book, but if the same thing happens I’m dropping the series.

I was mildly disappointed by this book. It fell into some cliche writing and felt more like pure erotica, with little plot. However, the characters are amazing and I was thirsting for a bit of light happiness, which this book definitely provides. It feels almost like one of those silly interludes in TV series when the writers want to take a bit of a break a serious plot. We do get some nice romantic developments, some fun smut, and threads of plots intent on setting up a cozy happily ever after.

Book 2
Well written book that finally had Ren and mal finally consummate.... it literally took FOREVER. I’m also still trying to find out the conclusion of Jessica meeting mab. That seemed like a pretty huge deal how she released the two in a different land and she got like 0 credit and there wasn’t any further explanation. I was also a little disappointed that some of the steamy wasn’t really detailed... that’s just me.

Not what i expected
This book is nothing like I expected from the summary but was really good. I really like how it seems as Mal becomes more human and independent,he actually appears childlike. Which is interesting considering he was never a child and the nature of what he is.i enjoyed reading this and the depth and attention the author gave to developing the characters.

Another great peek into the adventure that is life for Jessica, Mal and Azrael. Again, Mal is adorable. Azrael is so uptight that it is amusing and it is fun to watch Mal pester and pester him. He does a wonderful job of wearing him down.
There is drama, suspense and all around shenanigans as the trio try to figure out their future, while dealing with entities who want to destroy them.

I appreciated more of the worldbuilding from this book. Background on some characters was cool.
I still liked the first book better. Will have to see for the next one

MMy Thoughts and Review:
Jessica and Mal have been gone from the isle for months and are considering a return when Azrael turns up at their cottage. Turns out they were missed too.
It also turns out that there are enemies on the hunt. There is no where to turn that is safe. Azrael has been summoned to appear before a court of his magical peers. Someone means to send Mal back to his Deity, and Jessica is caught between the tug-of-war still going on between Mal and his Sorcerer.
Azrael and Mal MUST finally decide if they have what it takes to be friends and with Jessica there to offer comfort and as a buffer, perhaps the sorcerer and demon can finally be what they each have desired to be for the other for years. 💜👬💚
Ohhh SWEET GAIA, how I love this series! When I read the e-books back in 2018 (exactly two years ago this month), I was introduced to both MMF and MM scenes through this book. While the scenes are not gratuitous, or overly explicit, and the MF scenes still outweigh them, the ones that take place are emotional, and beautiful.
I love that I am now hearing this series in its audio format. Lauren Harris has done a tremendous job bringing A.H. Lee's characters to life. As I have told Abbie in emails we have swapped, even after the hundreds and hundreds of books I have read, Mal still continues to be one of my favorite characters of all time.
If you love fantasy worlds filled with magic, mystery, and silly mayhem, where fairies, dragons, sorcerers, and demons can be friends, lovers, and everything in between, you should give this quirky and fantastical series a try.
Oh, and tell Mal I said, "Hello!"💖

Great continuation
I have really enjoyed this series so far, especially this book because of the characters and the dynamics of their relationships with each other. So for the most part, Azrael comes off as a powerful man who is sure and confident of himself with a commanding and dominating presence in public. However, behind closed doors in the bedroom, he’s the complete opposite and Mal and Jessica take on a more assertive role. He’s shy and unsure of himself and far from dominating with a more submissive nature. Then you have Mal who is cheeky, snarky, sometimes grouchy but when he is happy, he’s almost child like in his excitement which can be endearing to the right reader. Now Jessica to me seems like the glue holding them together because I don’t think Mal and Azrael would have taken their relationship to the next level and acknowledge their feelings with each other without her encouragement and guidance.
The plot of the story with the trial and the fairy queen seemed to be more of a background story because I felt as if the development of the relationships held more of the spotlight of the book. I am not complaining but it was just an observation.

Now free of his bonds, Mal and Jessica have been exploring the world for the last four months when Azrael shows up at their rented cottage. He needs Mal's help to create a portal that has never been done so far from the source of magic. Mal sees his opportunity to push Azrael to finally give in to their mutual desire. He will help, for one night without his wards. But, creating the gate isn't their only problem when Azrael learns a new wizard council wants to put him on trial for dark magic, the Queen of fairies wants revenge on him and there's a demon hunter after Mal!
This installment pushes the line on consent, since Azrael is actually afraid to drop his wards and be vulnerable to Mal's incubus power. But, after years of forcefully taking magic from Mal, their relationship has always been a power struggle. Lee tempers this via Jessica, who sees how both men are scared of being hurt and actively works to ease those fears. The sexual tension is high, since the payoff doesn't come until the end, but it was worth it.
I loved how much more agency Jessica has in tvus story and the introduction of Lucy. The sex was hot and the story continues to be fun. Looking forward to more.

Mal began to remind me of early Nathaniel (from Anita Blake). And that's above and beyond their shared leopard form. Sexually precocious, touch hungry, yet innocent in many ways. Also equally comfortable with either form and with any sexual partner. The big difference being they are sexually opposites. Mal is naturally Dom, Nate all sub.
In this universe, demons are personifications of the seven deadly sins. As an incubus, Mal is lust personified. Mal is also (in physical form) the living wet dream of his summoner Lord Azrael.
Jessica is a half succubus. Human mother, father who was like Mal. No shifting for her & less talent seeing auras & desires. Less powerful in general.
Lord Azrael is a Sorcerer. Sorcerers being powerful wielders of magic without being natural sources. As opposed to magicians with innate, but lesser power. Azrael pulls magic through Mal, which feels god as long as he isn't overly drained.
Mal is bisexual without any clear preference. Jessica & Azrael both prefer men, but are open to sex with women.

More underwhelming compared to book 1 but still great to read if you want to see the continuation of their story (you can stop at book 1 and be pretty satisfied tbf)
1. We see more emotionally charged scenes in this book and it definitely gives us more insight into the characters and their very unique personalities/the dynamic they have with eachother. 💞
2. The story focuses more on Azrael & Mal's relationship and I was sad to see Jessica being left out :(( (the author made it very clear that Jessica also FELT left out at times so it isn't just inferred).
3. The culmination of the story (and the smut) was quite underwhelming compared to how the story built it up to be but it was still alright.
Ps. Jessica is the definition of " I can talk myself out of anything" 😭🫶💞 , love her sm

Different from the first- enjoyable
This one was definitely different from book one. Seemed to focus a lot more on Mal and Azreal and not Jessica. Also I’m confused about if Azreal likes Jessica? Isn’t he gay? Is he mostly gay, but a little bi? The book doesn’t really clarify if he is actually romantically interested in her.

A great work and a guilty pleasure. :-)
A working storyline with fun twists that keep you guessing. Can't believe I'm enjoying the series as much I am but the author is a favorite of mine.

I liked it. It was a good book. The story is just as good if not better than the first one. It didn't flow as well. That's because it was a lot busier though. There was a lot more going on. I still really enjoyed it and I recommend it.

More like 3.5. I really enjoy the plot of this series and the characters are fun. But by the end of the book, I felt like the direction the romance was going was not realistic. I mean obviously this is magic and demons and all but, the romance seemed... unbalanced.

Devoured it!
This series is amazing, each book just keeps getting better. I loved the descriptions of the new places visited, and the new cultures. And the relationship between Mal and Azrael gets so deliciously intense! Once again, Lauren Harris did a phenomenal job.

I liked it in the beginning but it was too much of a slow burn for me to continue. I lost interest….

This was so worth the wait. Many reviewers were bothered by the sex scene but I was blown away and very turned on. The mm sex scene was well written and narrated I felt like I was listening to a porn movie. I need much more of this

Magical
A great story of magic and love. They will have to go through many problems before things can settle into a rhythm that is all theirs
