Back of Beyond
Cody Hoyt, although a brilliant cop, is an alcoholic struggling with two months of sobriety when his friend Hank Winters turns up dead in a remote mountain cabin. At first it looks like suicide, but Cody knows Hank better than that. As Cody digs deeper into the case, all roads lead to foul play. After years of bad behavior with his department, Cody in no position to be investigating a homicide. But he will stop at nothing to find out who murdered Hank. And why...

The Highway
When two sisters set out across a remote stretch of Montana road to visit their friend, little do they know it will be the last time anyone might ever hear from them again. The girls—and their car—simply vanish. Convinced by his son and his former rookie partner, Cassie Dewell, former police investigator Cody Hoyt begins the drive to the girls' last known location. As Cody makes his way to the stretch of highway where they went missing, Cassie discovers that Gracie and Danielle Sullivan aren't the first girls who have disappeared in this area. This majestic landscape is the hunting ground for a killer. Can Cassie overcome her doubts and lack of experience and use her innate skill? Can Cody Hoyt battle his own demons and find this killer before another victim vanishes on the highway?

Badlands
Twelve-year-old Kyle Westergaard dreams of getting out of Grimstad and leading a better life. One day, while delivering newspapers, he witnesses a car accident and takes a mysterious bundle from the scene. Suddenly he’s in possession of a lot of money—and packets of white powder—and Kyle can’t help but wonder whether his luck has changed…for better or for worse. When a gang war heats up, it’s up to Cassie Dewell to help restore law and order. As she is propelled on a collision course with a murderous enemy, she finds that the key to it all might come in the most unlikely a boy on a bike named Kyle. He seems to know something that Cassie does not about what lies beneath the surface of this small and troubled town…

Paradise Valley
For three years, Investigator Cassie Dewell has been on a hunt for a serial killer known as the Lizard King whose hunting grounds are the highways and truck stops where runaways and prostitutes are most likely to vanish. Cassie almost caught him...once. Now, she has set what she believes is the perfect trap. But the plan goes horribly wrong, and the blame falls on Cassie. Disgraced, she loses her job. At the same time, Kyle Westergaard, has disappeared and Kyle's grandmother begs Cassie to find him. Cassie agrees—all the while hunting the truck driver. Kyle's disappearance may have a more sinister meaning than anyone realizes. With no allies, no support, and only her own wits to rely on, Cassie must take down a killer who is as ruthless as he is cunning.

Alright, anyone watching the Big Sky adapatation of this series, on ABC and Hulu? It's now 4 episodes in (5?) and while they did change some pretty key elements as you all will notice - I actually like it! It's not as dark and brutal as the books, which I really had to struggle with reading. I'll be the first to say that, as a reader of ALL Box novels, I keep confusing Jenny with Cassie because the onscreen Jenny looks more like book Cassie than the Cassie actress does. I don't think the show ruined anything, tho - like I said, the books were so dark, I like the levity of the show, the quirky almost "Twin Peaks" schematic of Ronald and the trooper's personalities and relationships. The motive behind the kidnappings is a little jumbled tho, and edges away from the very basic reasons most long haul serial killers do what they do. Even then, I like it better. I look forward to the next episodes! Anyone who goes from the show to the books, on the other hand, will have a dreary surprise LOL.

The C.J. Box Highway Quartet Collection: Back of Beyond; The Highway; Badlands; Paradise Valley (The Highway Quartet #1-4) was a good read by C.J. Box. This box set consists of; Back of Beyond, The Highway, Badlands, and Paradise Valley. Back of Beyond (The Highway Quartet #1) was another great read by C.J. Box. Cody Hoyt is a brilliant cop that is also an alcoholic struggling with two months of sobriety. His mentor and AA sponsor Hank Winters is found burned to death in a remote mountain cabin. It looked as though it was a suicide of a someone who fell off the wagon. Cody knows that Hank wouldn’t do that after being sober for fourteen years. Cody looked at the scene and knows that there is foul play at hand. Unfortunately he is in no position to investigate the homicide even though he is determined to find his killer. The clues are linked to an outfitter leading tourists on a multi day wilderness horseback trip in Yellowstone National Park. On that trip is Cody’s son Justin. Cody is desperate to find the killer before the group heads into the wild. Gracie Sullivan is only fourteen years old and suspects someone in the group is dangerous. The Highway (The Highway Quartet #2) was a good read by C.J. Box. Two sisters set across a remote stretch of Montana to visit a friend. They never would've guessed that this may be the last time someone hears from them. It seems as though the girls and their car just vanish. Cody Hoyt is a former police investigator who just lost his job. This led him to falling off the wagon after some long term sobriety. His son and his former rookie partner, Cassie Dewell, convince him to search for the girls. Cassie discovers that Gracie and Danielle aren't the first girls to disappear in the area. It seems that there's a killer on the loose who may just have a mysterious partner. Badlands (The Highway Quartet #3) was a great read by C.J. Box. Grimstad, North Dakota is a place people do not head to and they have struck oil. With the new oil flowing, crime comes along with it. They have a serious law and order problem and detective Cassie Dewell has just been assigned its deputy sheriff.Kyle Westergaard is a twelve year old paperboy. Everyone writes him off as a “slow” kid. He dreams of getting out of town, taking care of his alcoholic mom, and give them a better life. While delivering newspapers, he witnesses a car accident and has money and white powder. The gang war is heating up, and Cassie fears they may be in over their head. While investigating, Kyle keeps showing up where he doesn’t belong. Paradise Valley (The Highway Quartet #4) was a great read by C.J. Box. Investigator Cassie Dewell has been on the hunt for serial killer, The Lizard King. He is a long haul trucker, who preys on lot lizards, who are prostitutes who frequent truck stops. She almost caught him when she set up what she thought was the perfect trap. There were over half a dozen undercover officer, including Cassie’s fiancé, ready to close in on him. Unfortunately the plan goes wrong and Cassie is to blame, she loses her job and they investigate what happened. Kyle Westergaard, a kid that Cassie has taken under her wing has disappeared after telling everyone he is going on a long-planned adventure. Cassie is begged to find him by Kyle’s grandmother. Now Cassie is a lone wolf, with no support or allies. I enjoyed reading this book and can’t wait to read more by the author.

Suspenseful, well put together.

The description was so accurate I felt like I was visualizing every chapter. I love where it started and where it ended. Suspense, heart pumper at times, and constantly a mind provoker as to who did what and what happens next. I highly recommend this to anyone who likes mystery and suspense.
