The Wrong Brother

Rate this book
Two brothers. One lady. And a heart torn in two.

ISABELLA CARRINGTON has always favoured her mind over her heart.
Meeting Charles Dashwood, she quickly decides that he is the one for her. After all, he has all the qualities she appreciates in a man; he is kind, honest, and most of all dependable.

However, in the very moment, Isabella whispers her 'I do', her eyes catch the glimpse of another man. A man whose eyes look unnervingly familiar, and yet, stir a longing within her heart and soul she has never known.

Just as she gives her hand to Charles Dashwood, her heart is stolen by none other than her husband's notorious twin, ROBERT DASHWOOD, VISCOUNT NORWOOD.

When mind and heart do not go hand in hand, can there be a happily ever after?

This story was short but it really touched me in such a special way. Isabella is a smart woman that has finally found a man that respects her brain as well as her other features. She is about to take the final step in that relationship when something unexpected happens. What a great book this was.
It had such heart. I will keep it as a go to my happy place read. I loved all of the characters. I can see this family coming back as a sequel. Maybe Bree will consider that.

Let's start with the thing I disliked. The insta-love. I know it's just part of the genre but it's really annoying and at least in my opinion lazy writing. Sure in a novella length story it's the most convenient way but it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

The rest was good. Pretty standard for HR but still enjoyable. The predictability is a bonus in this case as it lets your mind relax and unwind which was precisely what I needed.

There's not all that much to say about this story.. It was kind of OK and I thought that the interaction between the characters was also kind of OK, but what I do object to, is the insta-love aspect of the story. Twin brothers Charles and Robert were the epitome of how brothers should protect each other and be there for one another and I'm deeply sorry that there wasn't more of this aspect. But the love side of things (if I can even call it that) was simply ridiculous. Unless, of course, you believe that two people can fall head over heels in love with each other simply by seeing each other across the room and be together happily ever after after having known each other for two days.

Isabella Carrington decided to marry Charles Dashwood because he is honest and trustworthy. It does not matter that she does not feel a special attraction to him. After all, there is time to fall in love with a husband after the wedding, is it not? Too bad that soon after she makes her vows, her eyes see for the first time her true love... Robert Dashwood, his husband’s brother!

Absolutely delightful! This book was fun, romantic and definitely worth reading. Bree Wolf’s writing style is captivating and her ideas for this kind of plot were spot on. I really had a great time reading her novella, first book in the “A Forbidden Love Novella” series, and I hope I can get to the second book very soon!

While I was reading I had no idea how the author would solve the crazy situation she had put her characters in, but now that I know what happens in the end, I can say that she was very clever! I loved how everything went and I am happy that Ms. Wolf managed to create a sweet “happily ever after” out of an embarrassing and complicated circumstance.

The characters were lovely and I particularly liked Robert (I cannot help but fall for the “bad guy”!) but Charles was also very interesting and I am very curious to see if what the two brothers did to solve their problems will still work in the future!

Love at first sight? Yes, please! If you want to spend funny -but also exciting- moments with a good, clean Regency book I definitely recommend Bree Wolf’s novella “The Wrong Brother”. You will love it!

This is just a darling, fun, clean, Regency. The author starts the story in "England 1788 (or a variation thereof)" which was just brilliant. Here twin brothers Charles and Robert are discussing their studies. Charles is studious and sober while Robert is wild and bold. Robert lures Charles out to a forbidden adventure promising to study tomorrow; an accident ensues and Robert takes the blame.

15 years later Charles is preparing to marry, running the manor in Robert's place and generally being studious and serious. His bride is a serious, educated, young lady who would be labeled a Blue Stocking if she wasn't so sweet and beautiful. Their happiness is all but guaranteed.

As she exits the Church Isabella spies Robert, with his long hair and dark eyes and falls head over heels in love. And Robert is equally smitten with his brother's beautiful wife.

The author contrives the cleverest solution to this problem...

This is a delightful tale written with Bree's usual flare for intrigue and mystery. It seems there is no way out but leave it to Bree to find a way for love. I am looking forward to the rest of the series on this unusual theme about twins. (less)

I flinch tagging this regency but I guess that is what it tries for.

This has been a supremely Mondayish Monday so I decided to deal with it with a book I'd half hate. And it worked! I feel more cheered up by the pure ridiculousness I just read. Though I'm not sure ridiculous begins to cover the antics in this book.
Read the synopsis and you can guess what happens. No, that guess is not too outlandish. It happens.
With barely 100 pages of actual writing, the story at least goes fast. I can't think of a good reason to recommend it (unless you like forbidden insta-love that develops into burning touches and blushing glances and humorless angst) but there is also no reason not to read it. It was fairly clean. Full ridiculous.
The ending kind of makes me want to pound my head into a wall. But at least I'm feeling that and not angst over Monday. So, you know, if you're looking for a trade off...

I must say that it is not my favourite book that Bree Wolf wrote, but it was well written and the love story was charming! Isabella marries without feeling true love and then she finds a so powerful and strong love with her husband's twin!! What is going to happen when you finally find out what true love is but in the wrong eyes, when eventually you realize what is love from the first sight... when everything is so right but unfortunately at the worst and wrong moment what are you going to do? How are you going to live with a Love so powerful burning your inside when you mustn't even consider that this is a possibility? You must definitely read this book to know what will happen. I hope to read other books of this series.

Friendship, love, fears are present in a mixture that keeps you enthralled until the last page.
This is the first book of a new series of Bree Wolf. Lady Isabelle and Charles Dashwood are very good friends and they decided to marry. a marriage of convenience based on the many interests they have in common. But ... the day of the wedding Isabelle meets Charles's twin Robert. A spark is born between them. An intense love filled with grief because they do not want to betray the trust of Charles. Eventually they find a solution to their problem that brings joy to everyone but also a mystery that will be interesting to follow.
A book that I recommend to everyone.

Bree Wolf can definitely write about emotions. It is a short story, a novella in which you will read almost only about feelings, struggles. And it is done nicely. I like this book.

But, I would like it more if there was more action. I mean, it could be a very good historical fiction and a full novel. I read novels which have a fascinating historical background, many plot twists but they are lacking this kind of writing about emotions which Bree Wolf seems to know how to write. She seems to be very good in creating tension between characters and scene which accelerate your heartbeat.

I'm struggling to adequately rate this short novella.

Amongst the good things, I'd point the writing. I love how Bree Wolf can portray such deep feelings in so short a story. I also loved the characters, both twins, Isabella, and even her sister Adriana. In a little more than 120 pages, we really get to know them, to the point of being both surprised and not surprised at their decisions (if that makes any sense). Charles, always doing what he feels right. Robert, always doing what he wants. And Isabella, letting her mind rule her decisions. Until everything changes, and all of them are trapped in a situation with no apparent solution.

The bad things? First of all, the length. I wish this was a full-length novel because, as it is, it all feels too rushed (everything happens in about two days, after all). Also, I don't like insta-love stories, and this one must hold the record, but I understand that it had to be done this way in order to be a novella.

Despite it, I really enjoy Bree Wolf's stories, so I guess it's closer to 4 than to 3 stars after all.

Wonderful story about brotherly love, sisterly concern and marital bliss... And an unsolvable problem solved in an intruiging way.
I can't wait to read part 2, to see where that will lead!

👎👎I wanted to like this book, I really did, but I couldn't get over the whole falling in love with her husband's brother, 2 seconds after saying her vows! Seriously, I'm not a fan of the whole love at first sight anyway, but this was too much. I get that marrying for love was the exception, especially among the ton. But her husband was good, kind, honorable and Robert was a rogue with a notoriously bad reputation. The whole falling in love with your twin brother really needed to happen BEFORE the wedding vows. You still can have Charles and Robert trade places so as not to cause a controversy with the ton, but seriously, talk about the ultimate betrayal. YOUR BROTHER AND YOUR WIFE! Charles is the only unselfish person in this whole situation, and I want to see him get the happy ending he deserves. The writing was done well in that I did in fact finish the book, and I do want to read the next in the series because I want to see what happens for Charles. I want him to have his happily ever after.

The Wrong Brother (Forbidden Love Novella, #1) is a sweet romance and a fun read. A great quiet afternoon read. Isabella Carrington has found her perfect match. Little does she know that she will fall in love with someone else on her wedding day. Ms. Wolf cleverly maneuvers this worrisome and difficult situation to a happy ending for all. It would be interesting to see a glimpse into the future to see if this arrangement actually worked.

This book was clean, short, and simple.
It was a too simple for me; bordering on unbelievable, ridiculous, and silly.
They fall madly in love with each other (willing to give up everything) after looking at each other across the room.

Very short story, with unrealistic and extremely outrageous conclusion. Easy read that some will like. There's very little complexity, and not a lot of depth to some of the characters. Charles is probably the best of characters, Shane that the author didn't give herself more reign with the plot by extending it into a novel.

This was an entertaining historical romance series, albeit each installment was relatively short, not allowing the characters to grow effectively. The characters each had distinct personalities and the humor was welcoming. Strange incidents were proposed that I had never heard of before, some which were totally believable and some which were absolutely not. It was not always easy to understand or empathize with the characters.

The characters in this installment just didn't seem realistic and I was less than satisfied with the plot development. It contained a totally incomprehensible conclusion, based on a juvenile solution to their unique problem. The writing was simple and did contain some grammatical errors.

Each story is able to stand on its own, however, characters do crossover within the installments, so the reader is offered more insight by reading the books in the order they were presented. On the positive side, these books are clean, which I personally prefer. Each conclusion contains its own unique H.E.A This one was far from traditional.

Received as a free e-book. Not my cup of tea at all. Firstly, "England, 1788, or variation thereof" as the setting; my question regarding this would be, why choose to set a novel in a historical era without doing even a tiny bit of research beforehand? Whilst I appreciate this is not meant to be "serious", neither the social conventions, the economics, the language, nor the political situation are reflected in this book. As for characters wanting to see Machu Picchu.... in the early 18oo's..... really? On the positive side, it was very short.

This is a short story and I am not going to say anything about the storyline out of fear to give to much away . There would be no point in reading it if you already know how the story goes would it ?!
If you are in for a story ful of love and affection then you should read this one , I am sure you wil not be disappointed .
And for who is interested : no sex .

Excellent book that I received by the author for an honest review. Brothers, Charles and Robert, switch identities so that one brother can have the woman he has fallen in love with at first sight. Have to read the second book in the series to find out what happens to the other brother.

I really liked Charles, his character was portrayed as sincere and thoughtful, always looking out for the well-being of those around him. His regard for his brother is touching and unfailing, even if his brother hasn't always deserved this level of regard.
The rest of the characters...meh. I liked Isabella at first, she seemed intelligent and mature, realistic and thoughtful. But then she takes one look at Robert and she's an idiot. So disappointing. Then she's constantly weeping or on the verge of tears for essentially the remainder of the novella. Where's some of that stiff upper lip? Come on, now. Behave like and adult. She loses any and all of the maturity she portrayed at the start of the novella.
Robert starts the novella as a rogue with a devil-may-care attitude, awaiting the very instant he's able to run offand resume his profligate ways once more. Then he sees Isabella and is somehow a whole new person with morals and an upstanding character? A man who is offended and insulted by the mere insinuation that he could behave in a dishonorable way? Yeah, sure.
The book was too insta-lovey. And despite their protestations to the contrary and their unwillingness to past a certain point their still going behind Charles back and I can't respect that. Even if Charles doesn't love Isabella romantically, it's still the principal of it all. Had they avoided each other instead of seeking each other out, I could have respected Isabella and Robert more.
Due to the insta-love this novella didn't really feel like it had any substance. If their love had developed over the first few days of their acquaintance while Robert was staying at the house after the wedding, I would had have enjoyed it more. And if the love wasn't so intense instantly that they couldn't fathom ever being apart, at the expense of Charles.
*spoiler*
And then Charles is willing to give up literally his ENTIRE life for them. Oh, Charles. They do not deserve you.
*end spoiler*
Obviously though this is a novella, and there is a limited amount of pages to fill, so things need to be more condensed. As a novel, I would have rated this book probably 2 stars due to the rapid progression and lack of character development. But as a novella, I would give it 3-3.5 stars. Bree Wolf has a really nice writing style that flows nicely and is always enjoyable to read, but I wish the love connection has been hashed out more so that it felt more plausible and their actions more understandable.

I came upon this book while surfing my tbrs and I like this wrong brother troupe. But nooope this isnt for me. The book was too short and it just didnt have the it factor. Maybe coz I was reading a lot better books this didnt get any stars from me. But there was nothing believable in the story at all. Zero chemistry and half the time I felt sorry for charles.

Spoilers ahead:

Charles and isabella are getting married and they are married. Her sister says she shouldn't marry him coz she doesnt love her but she wants to marry charles coz they both read.
Isabella sees robert once they are married and she is suddenly struck with some cupid arrow and knows she loves him same goes for Robert. I mean that is just so stupid. They dance together and they are having impure thoughts(we arent told what they are).

Now Robert is getting drunk and isabella is crying during her wedding night and she says that she loves someone else. So charles let's her sleep alone and he keeps pleading with Robert to tell him what is wrong. Robert is supposed to be a rake and a wanderer and she is intrigued that he wants to travel.

We see a huge prologue story totally unnecessary for this book about charles and Robert childhood. Then charles goes away for a day and asks Robert to keep her company and they almost kiss and he leaves. And after lunch she sees him punches the wall and he says she feels it too and that he cannot betray him brother. Then charles is there and he says they can figure everything out once everyone leaves

Then she goes walking and disappears I'm the rain and they go searching and robery finds her crying. She asks him to kiss her and he does. Then they decide that they have to tell charles and it isnt fair. He talks to charles and he already knows that they fell in love. So he says they will switch places so that he can be with isabella. They put Robert's hair like charles and they switch placed and robert and isabella go to travel Egypt and Poor charles stays back and is working his ass off like usual. I just couldnt believe the love and felt sad for charles.

The next novella is charles story and nope I'm not interested in the series anymore.

Just nope.

I find it profoundly alarming that so many people have given this book 4 or 5 stars. Come on.

The insta-love was ABSURD. Especially when we have two twins who look exactly the same. Especially when Isabella (the main character) sees Robert (the twin, and the brother of the one she is about to marry) across the whole church. And somehow she still manages to tell the difference between the expression on his eyes and the one on her soon-to-be husband Charles, when there is (and I repeat just to emphasize), A WHOLE CHURCH between them.
To make matters worse, they have never met before or exchanged a single word. I know this is a "romance topic", but she (and also he, but that specific chapter is from her POV) literally falls madly and utterly in love with his looks, nothing else (not to mention the bad reputation he has, that she has heard of, and that she despises).

It all went downhill from there. Robert's character is inconsistent: he is supposed to be a notorious scoundrel, but if we (as readers) know that is because the author keeps repeating and repeating his alleged scandalous adventures all over London. Robert's behaviour never gives this "rake" impression away. Never. Well, he gets drunk the night of the wedding. Oh wow. What a bad boy.
And Isabella is just annoying: Bree Wolf tries to present her as a "modern" kind of heroine, well-read and educated, interested in culture and history, with an opinion of her own. And that just doesn't fit together with her constant almost-faintings, dizziness or lightheaded sensations when she gets upset.

Some spoilers from now on (even though you can read it, cause I wouldn't bother reading the book if I were you)

The style of the author is fine, though. The only (and main) problem is the plot of the novella.
And the cover is gorgeous, I'll have to give her that.

I thought this was a nice enough story, however, one thing that drives me a little nuts about these Regency Romance books is the idea of falling in love instantly. I personally feel that love between couples is something that grows from really getting to know someone and then accepting them for who they are. To me, the premise of "love at first sight" is nothing more than finding someone physically appealing. After all, look at Ted Bundy. He was a very nice looking man, but he turned out to be a serial killer. Also, the fact that Charles and Robert were so different in personality and behavior made it a little hard to believe that they were going to pull off switching places for the rest of their lives. I feel so sorry for the women of the Regency period. The fact that if they did anything that wasn't acceptable to the "Ton" would ruin their lives and the lives of their other family members was horrible. I know that this must have been historically correct since author after author write the same things regarding their characters, but OMG I would have been ruined immediately because I can't see myself trying to fit into such restrictive rules of "society." Anyway, it was a pleasant enough read, and I see that there is a follow-up story of Charles (who is now "Robert") since they switched lives, has to deal with the crap his brother pulled with women in order to be able to have his "happy ending". I will probably purchase this just because as I stated, it's pleasant enough "fluff" to make it an enjoyable read for one afternoon.

Another hit!

I have long enjoyed Brea Wolf's recency romances, having read almost her complex Love's Second Chance Series. Bree's female heroines are not the usual simperring females of the time. Her characters are strong, independent, and intelligent women, who seek not just a excellent match but a man who will also respect her mind as well as her beauty. A Bree Wolf heroine would expect to be a full partner in any relationship. And somehow her female characters always seem to find their happily ever after.
In the "Wrong Brother" Bree pushes her new character, Isabella, into a truly impossible situation for a woman in the Recency era. Isabella accepts a match she believes to be the best for her, only to discover her true Soul-mate after she is wed! Bree Wolf 's masterful word craft had me feeling every minute of the lovers angst as they tried to find an acceptable and honorable solution. The agony builds to a climax and just when you believe all is lost, Bree's characters discover a way that is clever, if not a little twisted. As always, the romance is sweet and clean, just a few secret stolen kisses, meant to increase the breathless anticipation of what is to come. In the end, Bree Wolf does not fail to deliver on a happily ever after you never saw coming."The Wrong Brother" is an easy to read, entertaining novella, you could easily finish in one afternoon. Pick up "The Wrong Brother" if you are looking for a way to relax one sunny afternoon in the garden!

I read this as part of a boxed set and I liked it. I love romance books as long as they are clean and have a happy ending. In this book, the heroine Isabella Carrington believes she has found her perfect match in Charles Dashwood. However, on her wedding day, things change when she makes eye contact with Charles' brother Robert.

What is a girl to do when she finds herself married to one man, but falling in love with his brother? Robert has fallen in love with Isabella as well, but doesn't want to hurt his brother and doesn't know what to do about the whole situation.

This is an age old story, but the solution the author came up with to put Robert and Isabella together I'm not so sure was the greatest idea. This story is clean and it is historical, but the solution would make Isabella do something wrong, morally.

All-in-all it was nicely put together and as I said, I liked it. Check it out and decide for yourself. Enjoy!

I received the boxed set free for an honest review. The opinions stated are purely my own.
