This is my first time reading interactive fiction(IF) and I enjoyed it a lot! I'm so glad that I know of it's existence now. For those who don't know what interactive fiction(sometimes, also known as text adventure) is: it's basically like a book where you are the protagonist. The narrator lays out the plot and you have to make certain choices for the story to move on. Your choice affects the storyline.
I'll tackle this review in 2 parts: the "book part" and the "game part". And yes, I will count it as reading a book because it's the same length as an average book and you have to read it. Apart from the game points and other elements, it did feel like reading a book.
The Book part: The story follows the protagonist aka you, who is a wizard. Your quest starts with finding loot and glory alongside your best friend Reginald. As you go further you get to fight demons, slay dragons, become a vampire, go to hell, travel to other dimension, and get back to your true love. There is loads of magic, action, twists and turns along the way. It was also narrated in second person (a first timer for me) which brought a different kind of feel to the overall experience. The writing was good and creative brimming with imagination. And I suppose it's quite difficult to write IF as there are several places where the plot diverges according to the choice made and the author has to loop it back to the story. I'm looking forward to reading other IF by Sam Landstrom. Here's a link to the game which has all of his work as well some other authors'.
The Game part: It's a pretty simple layout; you read, make a choice and deal with the consequences. You earn/lose points like Life, Mana and Morale. So you have to make careful choices to keep the points in your favour or your avatar dies. This volume, Wizard's Choice, is divided into 6 (big) chapters. It was the game part that made it so enjoyable. Highly recommended for Dungeons and Dragons fans and epic/high fantasy readers.
