Cameron Shaw knows exactly what he's doing when it comes to coaching high school boys on the football field, but caring for a six-year-old girl is a whole different ballgame. When a gorgeous, highly opinionated woman shows up with his niece in tow and claims he's Piper's new guardian, Cameron's first response is "hell no." But he can't abandon a little girl who just lost her mother....
Audrey Bennett wasn't planning to stick around town, but Piper's gruff, way-too-good-looking-for-his-own-ego uncle clearly needs help. The longer she stays-watching Cameron teach Piper to make pancakes and tie her sparkly pink shoelaces-the harder it is to leave. Especially when he stops arguing and gives Audrey the most toe-curling kiss of her life. But just as she thinks he might be the one, a secret he's been keeping threatens to tear apart their happy little family.
I started writing back in 2004 and six years later self-published the third book I wrote. Two years after that I landed a contract with Grand Central Publishing.
Now I'm just chugging along, spitting out books faster than my kids can turn my living room into a disaster zone...
Actually, that's not entirely true. I only wish it were true.
But in all seriousness, I write sassy and sexy contemporary romances for Forever Romance. My Trouble series is available online and wherever paperbacks are sold.
I liked this romance quite a bit. I decided to read this book because I was in the mood for a romance even though I was in the middle of two mysteries. I really didn't know a lot about the book but it ended up being one of those books that I didn't want to put down. It is the third book in the Champion Valley series but I read it as a stand alone without any difficulty. I am really glad that I stumbled upon this sweet romantic story.
I loved the characters in this story. Audrey and Cameron were both wonderful on their own and even better together. They both have had some things to deal with in their past which really still affects the way that they approach relationships. I thought that the chemistry between was very well done. Piper was such a fun kid and incredibly resilient. I thought that the Bee Hive gang were all great characters that added just a touch of humor at just the right times.
The story starts with Audrey bringing Piper to her new guardian. Audrey's best friend and Piper's mother recently died and Piper's uncle is to be her new guardian. Cameron was not close to his sister and the idea of becoming the guardian of a 6 year old girl is more than frightening for him. Audrey is fiercely protective of Piper and plans to stick around until everyone is comfortable with the situation.
I really enjoyed watching this trio figure things out. Cameron didn't know his niece until everything happened but he seemed to be a natural with her right from the start. Audrey has a hard time letting others take control but she is willing to try things Cameron's way at times. Cameron and Audrey had a ton of chemistry from the start but they are both very focused on putting Piper's needs first.
My biggest issue with the story was the whole guardianship issue. In this story, Piper's mother knows she is dying and has time to make plans. It didn't make sense that she would leave her daughter with a brother she really didn't know over a best friend that has been there with her every step of the way. I also had a few moments in the story where I wanted to tell the adults to stop talking about certain issues in front of the child. Young kids are sponges and will pick up every little thing you say whether you want them to or not. I had no problem putting those issues aside and just rolling with the story so it really is a very minor issue.
I would recommend this book to others. This was a really sweet romantic story with very limited heat. There are some adorable moments in the story, some great chemistry, and a few laughs. This was my first experience reading any of Erin Kern's work and I do hope to read more in the future.
I received a review copy of this book from Forever (Grand Central Publishing).
Initial Thoughts I liked this one. Cameron and Audrey were great together and Piper was adorable. This was a really sweet romance with characters that have had a lot to overcome.
I received an ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
This is my first Erin Kern book and it definitely is not my last. I was unsure about Erin's books because call me a snob but I didn't like having characters with children from previous marriages or just children dumped on characters in general. HOWEVER, I have GROWN as a reader and now I love these stories. I especially loved Changing the Rules by Erin Kern because it featured a reluctant uncle who didn't know what the heck to do with a six year old girl who carries a stuffed animal at all times because her mother passed away from cancer.
It really is such a tragic story that made me tear up at the thought of this little girl who went through so much. And then we have Audrey, who was given the responsibility of transporting her best friend's daughter to the uncle, AKA the hottest guy she has ever seen. They meet by the side of the road when Audrey has a flat tire. Like a total independent woman she is, she doesn't let Cameron help her change her tires because she knows how to since her father taught her. Cameron is impressed by her strong attitude and that's when I knew I would love Audrey too. Audrey's been holding everything together since her best friend passed away and she thought it would be easy to drop Piper off and call it a day but Cameron also has his issues. Specifically, his bachelor dude issues that he doesn't want to give up. So Audrey stays and watches over Cameron, making sure he's attending to Piper's needs but soon she realizes that Cameron may have been doing a better job than her all along.
I loved seeing the dynamics of this relationship develop. I loved seeing the bits where it was all realistic. I loved how human Audrey was too. She knew she had something good but she was so afraid of losing someone she cared about like all the other times in her life so she just ran from her problems, hoping to avoid them. It was frustrating but needed to be done. And I loved how Cameron was this strong guy but also super unsure of himself when it came to bearing his feelings to Audrey.
MY RECOMMENDATION:
Changing the Rules is the third novel in the Champion Valley series and honestly, I suggest to read this one because I'm going to go back and read the previous ones too.
Audrey Bennett became the temporary guardian of a six-year-old little girl when her best friend died of cancer. Audrey would have been ready to take care of Piper, but her friend specified in her will that she wanted her estranged half-brother to be the official guardian. So that's why Audrey and Piper are going to Blanco Valley, to meet the girl's uncle. But things doesn't get to a good start when a stranger offer her help she doesn't ask for. And it's just her luck that the same gorgeous but infuriating man is the one she's supposed to meet.
Cameron Shaw is a bachelor very popular with the ladies who coach football at High School. He might move to Denver soon if he accept an other work's proposition. When he hear about Piper's existence and that he's been appointed as her new guardian, his first reaction is to flee. Cameron is not a bad guy, he just never seen himself as raising kids and doesn't think he's ready for it yet. But he want to at least try for his niece's sake. For Audrey, Piper's well-being is her priority, so she won't leave before knowing that the little girl is in good hands. Cameron offer them to stay at his guesthouse instead of an hotel. She wants Cameron to make Piper feel like she's number one, but he just need time to adjust.
Audrey is a worrier. Not quite a control freak, but she have little tendency and she doesn't trust easily, due to a strange family history and men who didn't treat her right before, but Cameron's little attentions, and his opening toward his niece and how he's so observant makes it harder for Audrey to resist his charm.
It was my first time reading this author and I really liked what I've read. Audrey and Cameron were both endearing characters and little Piper will probably stole your heart too. My favorite part: the fact the heroine doesn't text and the Post-it conversations.
This was such an adorable, light, easy read that Erin Kern has provided us with. Changing the Rules is the third book in her Champion Valley series, but it is a complete standalone. I have not read the first two books and I was able to thoroughly enjoy this one.
Cameron Shaw does not expect to become the guardian of his niece, Piper, whom he has never met. He refuses to take in Piper because he has no idea what he is going to do with a kid, but there is no way in hell Audrey is letting him skip out on his only sister's dying wish. Audrey just needs to convince him that he can be the guardian Piper needs and finds herself living in his guesthouse along with Piper. It is a learning curve for everyone as Cameron struggles to find a connection with Piper while ignoring his growing feelings for Audrey. Audrey struggles with the idea of letting go of Piper while protecting herself from Cameron because she has learned the hard way that people don't always stick around. Piper struggles with settling into a life with an uncle she has never met while still grieving over the mother she lost.
This was a joy to read because they were a perfectly imperfect family unit that were finding their way through life as they went. Cameron and Audrey are both control freaks, which makes for a dew interesting nights in the kitchen. Piper was freaking adorable. I loved her resilience and her positivity. This was a pretty quick read that was very well written.
I recommend this book for those who love: adorable six year olds, two Type A personalities, an alpha athlete, and a heroine who names designers alphabetically when she needs a breather.
This is the 3rd in a series and I’ve read all of the books. However, I definitely think this one can be read as a standalone. I quite liked this romance – love how the story centered around Piper and Cameron’s relationship with her as well as with Audrey. I didn’t buy some of the story around Piper being ‘left’ to Cameron who she didn’t know. Yet, there was Audrey who did know and love her. It felt a bit convenient to use that plot to bring them all together despite the fact that it didn’t make complete sense. But, I admit that the story was so cute that I didn’t really care that pieces and parts weren’t as solid as they could have been. This is much more of a sweet romance than a steamy one. Not a lot of sex in this one which is nice for those who aren’t as interested in the sexier romances. All in all, I liked this one!
NOTE: I received a copy of this book from the publisher for an honest review.
This was a fast read that kept my interest all the way through. It is about a little girl Piper who has lost her mother to cancer. At six the only two living relatives she has are two men she has never met. One being her sickly grandfather who never gave a care to his first family by cheating on his wife and as a result of having her mom. The other man in her life is the half-brother of her mom the Assistant Coach of a high school football team seven hours away from her home in Boulder, Colorado. Single and no children. The only person Piper has ever considered family and always a part of her life is Audrey Bennett her mom’s best friend. Since her father skipped before Piper was born, Audrey was there for Dianna. She was there at the end for her too. Her last wish was for Piper to be with family namely her brother, Cam. Also, that Audrey is there as she transitions enough to feel comfortable with Cam. This all broke her heart. She had been with Piper since the beginning she couldn’t imagine not having the little ray of sunshine in her life. But she also knew per court order she could not legally go against what she was ordered to do. Let’s just say when Cam finds out he says, “No!” Because what he really says yeah not to many words. Let’s just say Cam is used to much bigger women in his house and most are usually the “One and Done” type. So, a six-year-old is not on his agenda even if she does come with a nanny. Boy, does he find out she’s not a nanny and she is not going to take any of his crap at all. That he better get it through his head or else. He is now a plus one. Yet, he is also a guy who allows the town Beehive Mafia to ride roughshod over (The Twitter) as they call it. Taking pictures of him shirtless while mowing the lawn, etc.…. This is one group of senior citizen ladies that know no boundaries. Even pictures through his windows of him. But he knows them all by name and smirks as Audrey tries to get him to reprimand them. Which tells her he has a heart down deep. You will totally enjoy the banter, the mind games, the acts of kindness, but the love they share for Piper seals the deal. I give this: 5 stars. Attractive interior designer and control freak extraordinaire Audrey Bennett is unlucky when it comes to men. Dumped via text from her latest boyfriend, she wonders if she is unlovable and doomed to the “3 months and done” cycle of relationships with men. When a dear friend’s dying wish is for her to take her young daughter to live with an uncle she doesn’t know, Audrey reluctantly agrees. He is her family, how bad could he be?
Gorgeous football Coach Cameron Shaw likes his life exactly the way it is, uncomplicated and strictly casual when it comes to women. Complication comes in the form of his 6 year old niece and chaos is the woman who delivers her!
I really loved Ms. Kern’s Trouble Series but this is probably my favorite book to date. The backdrop to the story is eloquently provided in little tidbits without slowing the pace or distracting the reader. Let me just say, there is a lot more going on and it was superbly crafted to entice you to turn the next page. I also loved the innuendos and tantalizing, flirtatious dance between Audrey and Cameron as they got came to know each other and tried to make the best decision for a scared, little girl. The extended cast of characters ensures that there is more to come and I for one look forward to it!
I received an advance reader copy from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review. I really loved this one and gave it 5 stars.
Changing the Rules was a sweet and romantic read. The relationship that developed between Cameron and Audrey was fun to read. I loved their constant bickering and the way they pushed each others buttons. There was some drama, but not a whole lot. I loved that this wasn't love at first sight and they had to struggle to come to terms with what they were feeling for each other. I can't wait for more.
This is a fun story. I love how Cameron goes from consummate bachelor to one who finds the one that has him want to change his world. He is easy going with that underlying control of tension to him but also a sweet, kind and good guy. when his niece shows up on his door he is resistant at first. But that cutie pie wraps him around her finger and he wants to help her. He wants Piper to not be sad and to also know that someone understands what she is going through for he went through it as well. Only with Piper comes Audrey-the woman who is protective of her and wary of leaving her with Cameron.
Audrey is one who is serious on everything. She has plans for her plans and doesn’t really trust anyone outside her inner circle. She is a good sweet person just needs to be in control. So when she meets Cameron and he isn’t very enthused about having Piper her hackles are raised and she becomes very wary to walk away. It isn’t just because of Piper though-she and Cameron have an attraction that leaps off the page. As she gets to know him she sees that there is a different side to Cameron and that he loves his niece. She also sees he has an interest in her and is changing. ONly she doesn’t want to believe in the change. She fears that he will walk out of her life like others have in the past and she does run. She runs from love and family due to fear. I love how Cameron takes this with stride and doesn’t push her but lets her see for herself where her heart lies and has her get there on her own.
the story is full of sass and sweet moments. The little girl captures your heart from the beginning as does Cameron. Audrey takes a little longer due to her wary nature. We get some family moments but so much growth especially when it comes to Cameron. As he finds the one he is meant to be with he doesn’t freak out but accepts that it is the time for him and calmly says okay this is where I am and where my heart wishes to be. Audrey and Cameron entertain with their banter and wit but also their saucy moments and tender moments. A story on love and family and finding your way to trust and let someone in. It’s well written and fast paced while keeping entertained to the end.
Erin Kern returns to the Champion Valley series with her third book about football, family and love. Changing the Rules is an excellent feel good novel that readers won't have any trouble relating to. Cameron is the perfect bachelor, but can he be the perfect guardian for a little girl, who's lost her mother? Audrey knows a lot about this little girl but what is she to do with a sexy assistant football coach? Readers will fall in love with these two very different people who bond over the love of a child.
What I liked:
Piper has lost her mother to Cancer and now she has to leave her home to meet a guardian and uncle she's never known. That's a very heartbreaking thought to me. And when I first started the novel I wasn't sure how things would go for this little girl. I liked the fact that Kern did not make Piper and afterthought in this story. Piper was a very real character who had feelings and thoughts, just as the main characters did. I thought Kern did an excellent job of incorporating family moments into the book that included Piper and made her part in the story central to the plot.
Cameron was one foxy football coach. Everybody knows that Texas and football go hand in hand and Kern really played that up in this book. I think there will be tons of readers who not only appreciate Cameron and his vocation but who will also appreciate Kern's understanding of the culture. Cameron is a bachelor. What's he going to do with a little girl? That's what I was asking myself as I read this one. But sometimes you meet someone who has never really been around kids, who is just a natural. That's the way Kern portrays Cameron. He is just good at it and everything else...
Audrey was spunky. She was a bit wary of Cameron and his flirty ways. She was devoted to Piper and making sure her mom knew what she was doing by making this handsome guy her guardian. I liked that she stayed the course to find out if this was right for a very impressionable and sweet little girl. Falling for Cameron was not what she had in mind. Kern writes her as having lost at love more than once and readers will be rooting for her finding her happy ever after from the start.
What I didn't like:
There wasn't too much I didn't like. I'm not always a proponent of books where the hero or heroine is thrown into a situation beyond their control from the beginning. With this one, that situation was a child, which was daunting. I wasn't sure Kern could pull it off but I was pleasantly surprised at how it turned out. There were a few moments when I could't help but feel like it was all a little too perfect. Too cookie cutter familiar. But it passed quickly because of the superb characters and very well written romance.
Bottom Line:
This is the third book in the series but can easily be read as a stand alone. I thought the characters were well drawn and had very good chemistry from the start. Cameron was the hometown hero who had a big heart and Piper just seemed to fill a spot he didn't even realize needed filling. Audrey was a perfect match for his candor and openness. She was wary to start with and caution can make for some really good tension. Kern plays up the Texas, football and family angle and comes up a winner!
My Review: Sweet and heartbreaking with a small town romantic vibe...I really enjoyed this one. It definitely helps that I'm a west texas gal where we live by high school football, so everything about Cameron's career resonates with me.
But beyond that, there is so much to love about this story. The story about Cameron and Dianna's family broke my heart. I hated that they never got the chance to connect, but love that she left Piper in his care...because he needs that connection. Cameron hasn't had an easy life, so for him to be so completely wrapped up in this tiny little girl is awesome. I loved watching him fall in love with her.
And then there's Audrey. For her to give up this time to make sure that Piper got the situation she needed melted my heart. She has so much love and devotion to this little girl. I couldn't see how she could even consider leaving her, no matter how much Dianna had wanted it. She's in such a hard place...torn between this little girl and her real life which she has to eventually get back to.
Overall, it was just a fantastic book. I really did enjoy reading it. It was pure entertainment and I can definitely feel good recommending it.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.
While there were a couple of things that I feel like weren’t resolved, they weren’t related to the romance between Cam & Audrey so I let it go. I’m OK ignoring little things if I get a great, realistic love story :) And that’s definitely what I liked about Changing the Rules. Everything felt normal – the slow burn of these two getting to know each other, falling in love, and learning to trust not only the other but themselves.
Both Cam & Audrey had things that happened in their lives that have left them a little burned when it comes to commitment. With the death of Piper’s mom (Cam’s estranged half-sister) they have to come together to do the right thing for the little girl. Time and proximity has them getting to know each other and liking what they see. They still are hesitant, but not so much so that it brings on too much drama. Instead they just have to learn to listen to their hearts.
Full of cute moments and feelings being explored, I was very pleased with how smoothly Kern brings these two together and has them working their way to being a family.
*** I voluntarily read a Review Copy of this book. All opinions stated are solely my own and no one else’s. ***
Sexy, fun read with characters you're guaranteed to love.
The author did an amazing job writing this sexy, fun read. She created characters that I couldn't help but fall in love with!
Cameron Shaw ! Sweet baby Jesus ! Where do I even bring! He's sexy as sin and sweet as chocolate pancakes. I was curling up to the pages, trying real hard to touch him. He was just so darn yummy. Cameron loves his bachelor lifestyle. The babes come and go. No strings attached. No one but himself to worry about....That is until Audrey and Piper show up and make him feel things he never knew he wanted.
Beautiful, head strong, Audrey Bennett! I loved her and found her character down to earth and relatable. When her best friend dies, she's left caring for her daughter, Piper. Part of which is making sure Piper gets well adjusted and settled into living with her Uncle Cameron. But Audrey never imagined how easily she'd settle into his life too.
I was completely smitten with their story and couldn't get enough. Even though this book is a standalone, I do plan to go back and read the first two Champion Valley books.
A sweet, cute romance! I liked this story and how Cameron and Audrey came together. This trope is not one of my favorites but the author did a great job of selling me on the romance. Cameron, feeling out of his element was adorable. I loved the cute moments between him and Piper. *swoon* I liked Audrey too. I think she and Cameron were great together. I liked that their connection was evident and that they both allowed themselves the chance to explore it.
Although this is the third book in the Champion Valley series, I was able to read it as a stand alone without any problem. The author focused mainly on Cameron and Audrey's story and gives enough backstory for the reader to follow along and not miss what happened in the previous books.
UGH!!! This book was so stinking cute! I am in LOVE with Cameron and Audrey, and our sweet, 6 year old, Piper! Piper was the best part of the story; precious, adorable girl! Piper is Cameron's niece who he is just meeting for the first time. He was reluctant at first, but the more Piper wrapped him around the finger, the quicker he fell under her spell. He's been a single bachelor for years but then Audrey and Piper show up at their doorstep. Piper's mom, Dianna and Cameron's story broke my heart... Then you have Audrey's story too... It's just heartbreak everywhere. Oh, and Piper who has lost her mom. Like I said, heartbreak everywhere! I adored this story so much!!!
This story was such a fun book to read. Erin Kern writes what I call "Feel Good" books and this one fits the bill. Cameron is your typical bachelor who is an assistant coach for the local high school football team and has no intentions of settling down, that is until Audrey drives into town. Aubrey has been tasked with introducing six year old Piper to her only living relative, Cameron Shaw. Cameron and Audrey are both control freaks and don't see eye to eye on how to make Piper's transition easy. Both have met their match and possibly their mate if they can let go of the past and move on to the future.
Cameron is just really full of himself, “looking at me like you’re trying to picture me naked,” he murmured against her ear. This time she actually whimpered. “All you have to do is say the word.” It's really not often that Cameron is speechless, but when he is it's kind of...shocking, “****if I know, Audrey,” he admitted. “I came in here to finish our conversation, and you’re…” What was she doing? Really, all she’d been doing was bathing, and he’d intruded in on her. “You’re…naked.” I loved this book, Cameron had no clue what hit him where Audrey was concerned.
I won a copy of this book from Goodreads giveaways, I was not required to give a favorable review. This is a beautiful story about a little girl who lost her mother to cancer and was going to be living with an uncle she never met. Her uncle Cameron was her mom's half brother. He didn't know about her. Her mom's best friend Audrey was bringing her to him and staying until she was comfortable. But she didn't want her to go. Cameron & Audrey need to work things out for them to work.
Erin Kern is a very good writer. I really like this series. You can read each book as a stand alone, but i suggest you read them from the first book on. I hope there will be another book to the series. This book was definately a page turner, had a very hard time putting down the book. I recommend this book to my family and friends.
This is the third book in this series and I haven’t read the first two book in this series so it can be read as a stand-alone. I liked all the characters and it was nice to see Cameron grow. Both Audrey and Cameron had some serious abandonment issues from their parents. Good book but I won’t rush to read the other books in this series.
While this proved to be a fun read, I often felt like I was missing something. Characters were fairly well developed, although several were introduced in a very peripheral way only. At times there were things that were left unresolved and I wasn't sure why certain plot points had been included. I liked the book, but not one I plan to add to our collection.
in changing the rules, assistant coach cameron gets the family he never knew he wanted when his sister's best friend comes to blanco valley to deliver his niece, who is now his charge after her mother's death.
audrey has upended her life for piper, but there’s nothing she wouldn’t do for her best friend’s little girl. and if it means sticking around blanco valley during football season and making sure that piper’s bachelor uncle figured out how to become a surrogate dad, well then, that’s what she’ll do.
what she doesn’t count on is how attractive she will find him. and how he challenges her but also makes her see where she could do better. audrey and cameron make each other whole. they are better together than apart. it takes them a while to figure this out, and this is a slow burn romance for sure, but it’s sweet and emotional too.
**changing the rules will publish march 27, 2018. i received an advance reader copy courtesy of netgalley/grand central publishing (forever) in exchange for my honest review.
Liked the premise but I was frustrated by the heroine. I can appreciate a heroine who wants to be independent, but did she have to be such a rude shrew because the hero offered to help change her tire? Yeesh. That is so annoying. So that set me off on the wrong foot with this book and I just couldn't engage with the story-telling following that. It was a DNF for me.
