Have you ever been curious about the middle ages?

Have you ever wondered what life would be like if you grew up during that time?
There was a gatehouse and drawbridge with many arrow slits in the walls so your father could defend your home if he was attacked.
Well, let me tell you - life would've been a whole lot different back then!
Tapestries were woven pictures that hung on the walls...They were as colorful as they were beautiful.
Everything from the house decorations to even the meals were completely different!
Fish, herbs, and cured ham hung from the ceiling where they dried and could be used in the tasty dishes
Not only does the kitchen have...unusual...decorations but also setting the table was very strange as well
You used only knives and spoons, and your cup was made from an animal horn.
All in all, this one was another huge success. I absolutely LOVE the cover - it's so cute!!

And it was so much fun to learn about the Middle Ages - makes me want to pick up more books about this era!

With thanks to the author for a free copy in exchange for an honest review

I have an interest in history of all periods and ancient histories have always been appealing. If You Were Me and Lived in.... the Middle Ages is not a history book or a story set in a historical period. It is a book that contains a lot of information pertaining to the historical period of the Middle Ages. That would be in the period 400-1400 AD.

The illustrations are softly conceived images of dress, housing, cities (villages), castles, and life in general during this period. The author takes you through the days of a young school age miss. The author also delves into the variety of classes in the feudal system of the time. She doesn't call the lowest of the low "slaves" but chooses to call them the "un-free." The "un-free" peoples were not free to do as they chose, however, and they could not even leave their village without permission. The difference between the nobility, well to do, free, un-free, and poor is pretty clearly defined in the book. It will reveal to the reader that the very poor might live in a one-room hut made out of sticks, clay, and daub and that the hut has no chimney but still they have a fire for cooking inside the hut. Also, that the hut is shared with the family's animals. Life was hard, indeed.

The quantity of soft-facts given in the book makes a good introduction to learning about history. It reads easily, though not for very young readers. I'd say perhaps grades 4-6. But it can be read to younger children with comprehension. I think that reading this will open the door for children's pursuit of more definitive research and even toward reading fiction about the period - King Arthur and other tales.

There is a glossary in the back that can be helpful when the reader comes across a word that perplexes them. The couple of pages of famous people from the Middle Ages is interesting and could lead to the reader seeking to do some biographical research.

I received a complimentary copy to facilitate this review of my own opinions. I received no compensation.

It’s the year 1072 and we’re traveling to a small town (village) in England, courtesy of Carole P. Roman. It’s the Middle Ages (or Medieval) and this period in history lasted for nearly 400 years.

From the structure of society to what your home looked like (as the daughter of a knight in William of Normandy’s army), Roman details what life was like in the Middle Ages. Her description of life ignited my imagination so clearly, I could close my eyes and picture it.

The sections include society, home, food, the church’s influence in everyday life, ale, eating meals (most did not eat until mid-morning), clothing, work, hierarchy of classes and more.

Roman doesn’t leave anything out and I learned so much about the Middle Ages. It was very impressive and the illustrations partner with the words to create a terrific historical book any child will love.

I love this series and again, I wish I had this when I was young because I truly believe I would’ve fallen in love with history instead of ignoring it. Teachers, parents and educators will all find this book on the Middle Ages imperative to the yearly curriculum.

My Rating: 5+ stars

If You Were Me and Lived In...the Middle Ages by Carole P. Roman is yet another awesome history book for kids that adults can learn and love too! I love these books as much as the kids do! They are packed with info from what the kids of the times names would be, what they would eat, play with, wear, school, what was expected of them, class societies, and so much more. The middle ages have always fascinated me and all of Roman's books teach history better than school books! With the wonderful phasing, and the cute illustrations to go with them, kids will remember these books more than a textbook. I wish my kids had these when they were going to school, they would have enjoyed history more. I received this book for a honest review.

Carole P. Roman has added another title to her new series on different historical periods throughout the world. I just finished the book on the Middle Ages. As usual, there are tons of facts and details, including the clothing, foods, and recreation enjoyed by the people of Medieval England during the late eleventh century. Carole has chosen the family of a landed knight as her example, explaining the home they would have lived in, the social customs, and the education the children would receive. But she also compares that family to their servants, pointing out that the wealthy would have worn finer clothing than their servants or the peasants who worked the farmland. She also compares what the family eats to what those less wealthy might have on their table.

Carole explains that Europe was very fragmented after the fall of the Roman Empire and that the feudal system of kings, lords, knights, and serfs took the place of the vast empire headed by a single emperor. Men like the father of the family she describes were called on to support their lord when he needed soldiers and were rewarded with land and sometimes even a noble title. Life expectancy was not very long, the example given of a man already on his third wife or a woman remarrying after being widowed would be very common. The importance of the church is shown by how many cathedrals were being constructed, how many times a day people were expected to pray, and the way that families sent their children to become nuns or priests and serve in the church. Young readers will probably be shocked by the details of medical practices such as bloodletting.

At the back of the book there is a section which gives brief descriptions of famous people such as William the Conqueror, Joan of Arc, Saladin, and Charlemagne. And there is a glossary of terms to help out readers who may not have encountered terms like almonry, blanchette, or crenelate.

A nice introduction to young readers who are curious about the past and important time periods and people. This series gives a broad overview of each period and location, and enough specifics to answer basic questions while also giving facts that can lead to further research.

I received a copy of the book from the author for review purposes.

I would expect that most kids who read this book would feel grateful to not have grown up during the Middle Ages. Life was quite difficult and if you were not a family of power and wealth, then life was pretty difficult for you.

Roman focus's on life as a thirteen-year-old girl of privilege in her examples from the Middle Ages. Life for her consisted of sewing and praying. There were rituals and rules that must be kept every day. Life of others in the village was not quite as comfortable. The peasants lived simple lives full of hard work. Their children also had to work very hard.

Girls who read this might be shocked to hear that most daughters were married off as young as thirteen and there was little choice in who they would be marrying. Girls were also not allowed to go to school unless it was to a convent to read the Bible. I was surprised by the medical treatments when someone was ill, including blood-letting or bleeding out the old blood until new blood could be formed. The patient would be weak for months. Can you imagine if we had to do that now?

Life in the Middle Ages was difficult and yet somewhat simple. But, I would bet most kids reading this would be quite glad they are growing up now rather than 900 years ago. The end of the book includes a listing of famous people from the Middle Ages and a glossary of terms. There are several that will be new to most readers.

These books are meant for upper elementary to middle school-aged kids, but offer lots of information and learning for children that enjoy history and learning. Roman is extremely talented in her research and retelling of history for children to understand. Making it personal by putting the reader in the mind of a child their age makes the learning even more interesting.

My Review:

Carole Roman is at it again! She has released another great book added to her, If You Were Me and Lived In...series. This one is entitled, If You Were Me and Lived In...The Middle Ages. A book that is jam packed with a lot of goodies and facts so that your child can learn start from the comfort of their own home.

Carole is always sure to pack a bunch in there so that your child can glean from this fascinating subject that is The Middle Ages. I liked the part in the book about any home that has two chimneys meant that you were a wealthy family. She also mentioned that the servants slept on the floor on straw. Your meals were served on a large piece of bread called a trencher that soaked up your meal and this was given to the poor to eat.

If You Were Me and Lived In...The Middle Ages was filled with tons of information and was a joy to read.

I received this book from the author for the purpose of this review. All comments and opinions are entirely my own.

So far the thickest book in this particular series, If You Were Me an Lived In... Middle Ages is a very advanced read for the target audience, and not in a bad way either. It covers so many aspects of the Middle Ages that if grasped at their young age will set them ahead in school when they begin studying this time in history.

It is written in simple terms with some vocabulary words that are included in the glossary at the end of the book and well illustrated pages to help the kids better envision the words they are hearing.

The only flaw I can point out in this particular book, is that pages are much longer in this book than they were in the others of this series. The targeted audience has a very small attention span when listening to books and sometimes the only thing kids like to do is flip the page and because of the lengthy paragraphs on each page, they will have to wait quite a while before they get to look at a new picture.

So, though I still highly recommend this author and all of her series, this particular book in the series is a bit long winded and needs to be read to an older audience of probably 8+ so as to not to lose their attention so quickly. I give it 4 out of 5 stars.

A child growing up in the Middle Ages would have been born in about the year 1072, more than 900 years ago. This was the age of Knights, Kings, serfs and the like. The clothes were somewhat elaborate, travel was hard, easier by boat surprisingly. The richer folk had large homes with several rooms that housed not only the family but servants, knights and soldiers there to help the owner serve and defend the king. Interesting to me was the fact that seven year old boys were fostered out for several years to learn a trade. The barber pole started during this time. Instead of paying for a doctor the people went to these places with a red and white striped pole. It represented bloody bandages. They pulled out teeth and did operations as well as giving a shave and a haircut. Some boys were allowed to go to grammar school but if they answered wrong when a question was given to them they would be beaten. Talk about school discipline! Each family would give at least one of their children to the church. The church played an important part of the people's lives. Children also had games they could play and some even had knight training. One of my favorite games today was played back then, backgammon! This book will be a great learning tool for an older child, and could get them a good grade on a book report.
I won this book in a contest and was not required to give a review, positive or otherwise.

If you were me and live in...Middle Ages by Carole P. Roman is another marvelous book in her newest series about Civilizations Throughout Time. Her first series introduced culture and customs to elementary age and younger children and with this series, she brings history to life for older students. With muted colors, Mateya Arkova has drawn beautiful illustrations to show what life in the Middle Ages would have looked like in the year 1072 AD. The author takes the reader briefly through a discussion of village life and feudalism. With enchanting pictures and easy-to-read text, readers learn about large houses made of stone and protected by large walls and moats for the nobles and simple huts for the peasants. The author touches on clothing, food, religion and the different occupations and recreations of this time period. Occasional questions throughout the book encourage reflection and discussion. Included at the end is a glossary of words, with pronunciations, and also a section on famous people from the Middle Ages. This is a wonderfully informative book that is sure to capture a child's interest and imagination.

Another wonderful book written by an amazing author that will take young readers back in time to a fascinating period of history. Carole P. Roman, brought the middle ages to life. In fact we are about to embark on a great journey back to the Medieval time period. Back to the time of castles and knights who fought bravely for the princess. Where peasants were given small plots of land; Before I read this book I didn't know that those peasants that owned land were free while others that didn't own land were not free. That made a big difference. Just like today though, taxes had to be paid. This was also the time of William the Conqueror, or King William the I of England.
There was one very interesting fact on page 18 where it talked about the large circular building called a dovecote and what it was used for. There are so many fascinating facts and famous people from the middle ages to learn about, but you can't learn about them if you, my young reader don't pick up this very educational book titled, IF YOU WERE ME AND LIVED IN...MIDDLE AGES, and read about all of the things that happened at that time.

If you were me and lived in… series has opened the world to children about countries they may never visit and now she has included history lessons about eras long ago. If you were me and lived in...the Middle Ages introduces the period known as the Middle Ages and the daily lives of those who lived during this time. There is information about the communities in which people lived, the jobs which were performed and the everyday homes. The food, drink and clothing which were a part of daily life were discussed. At the end of the book, there is a list of important people from the Middle Ages as well as a glossary of terms which were introduced in the book. Ms. Roman has brilliantly made a series of book which presents information in a fun and entertaining manner. The information is simply presented but grabs the attention of the readers. These books are great additions to any school or family libraries as children begin to explore history and the world. I highly recommend these titles and other titles in the If you were me and lived in… series!

This book is part of a series designed to introduce children to how other people live in different countries and during different time periods. Using a mixture of illustrations and photography, the author talks about children who lived during the Middle Ages and what life might have been like if you were a little boy or girl who lived during that time. She talks about location, family, food, and fun. The difficult or unfamiliar words have a pronunciation beside them and are all included in a pronunciation guide at the back of the book.

My children really enjoy this series and look forward to each one. While the style of the book is laid out like a story, this is non-fiction and more informative. Children will learn quite a bit about the the history from the view point of other children around the world while having fun reading. I would recommend this book for family fun or for schools as an addition to curriculum.

We received this book to give an honest review.

K enjoyed the book but not as much as I thought he would. I think because it was a bit longer for him that he was starting to lose interest.
In this book we get to see how it was to live in the Middle Ages and it didn't seem to be too fun. We got to see how some people were not able to be on their own and had to work for those that owned the land. Living in the Middle Ages was hard on everyone even those that might have money because even for them they still had to answer to somebody.
You get to see the clothes that were worn to even where people slept.
The pictures are wonderful for the book and come alive as you are reading. I felt as though K and I learned a lot with this book more than I remember learning in school. There is a glossary in the back that you can use to help understand some words along with a list of famous people that lived within this time period.

This is part of an exceptional series of books that teaches young children (and a lot of us old people) history and how it used to be in an enjoyable and pleasurable way of learning! This one had a couple of typo errors but did nothing to distract from the story! Wish I had had the chance to learn history this way when I young! Good for any type of class or just reading aloud to maybe hospice patients and every library of any sort should have the whole series of these books!

Nine hundred years ago, there was a time period called the Middle Ages. It began in England. People from other countries came to live there. Kings had power. They made the laws and ruled their people. During this time, knights, battles and castles were part of every day. Everyone had a job to do and it meant working together.

I can't tell you enough about this book and series. Ms. Roman really went above and beyond here. It's informative, educational and such fun to read. Well written and characters that will make you smile are huge in this book. Your child will love learning more about our past. Perfect for home schooled children. It's so easy to understand, kids will want to hear it again and again.

I found no issues.

I gave this one 5 cheers out of 5 because even my high school aged children found it interesting. ~Copy of book provided by author in exchange for a fair review~

I received this ebook for free in exchange for an honest and unbiased review. Having said that, I wouldn't keep reading this series if I didn't enjoy it.

The "If You Were Me and Lived in ...." series are little slices of history with brightly colored illustrations and fairly accurate information. They are an excellent introduction to different countries, cultures and time periods for young readers. In ...the Middle Ages, the reader travels back in time to learn about the life of a young woman, who tells the reader all about what the world was like for a young person of her station.

These books include vocabulary words, age-appropriate descriptions of historical events, and an overview of what life was like at home. I think they will be an excellent way to get children interested in history; and also a way to show them that even though people and places may be different, we all still have things in common.

I would like to thank the author for sending me a copy of this book. After reading this book I passed it on to a neighbour for her young son. This book, along with the rest of the series, is really interesting and educational for children. In my opinion all young children should have copies of Carole P. Roman's educational books in their home. This book contains a lot of information about what the middle ages would have been like. The books in the "If You were Me .." series are an easy and interesting way for children to learn about other places from around the world and other periods of time that have already past. These books are a good set for children who are just starting out with reading. I would highly recommend these books to any who works with or has young children as they would be a real asset to any childrens book collection.

We were gifted this book by the author in exchange for an honest review. I would almost code this book in the series as a chapter book. It is lengthy but contains a lot of great learning materials. The author includes two additional things in this book that are highly beneficial. One she includes the glossary so that if there are hard words the children can look to find out what they mean. Two, she includes important people of this time period. The children were very excited to hear about the food and the music and the differences between how they live in how the children of the middle ages lived. They were also quite surprised at how a lot of the decisions were made by society versus by the family themselves. Great series we will continue to follow!

This book provides children with an informative look at life in the Middle Ages. The author provides a large amount of information covering everything from crusades, to nobility, peasants and Knights, as well as the variety of jobs, housing and lifestyles of various classes of people that lived in the Middle Ages. It is perhaps a little dryer than some of her other books but it is still an entertains, fun way for kids to learn about history. The illustrations are colourful enough to catch a child's eye and they follow the story well. This book would be great for classroom use, home schooling or for just an everyday read. I received this book at no cost and under no obligation.

This is one of thickest books this author has written for children. It is another book that I will proudly place on my school shelves. Readers will learn when the Middle Ages began and ended. Readers will also learn about the different classes of people and what life was like for them. Most readers will love to read about knights and castles, foods and jobs At the end of the book the author has once again given us a glossary and short biographies of famous people of the Middle Ages. It is my pleasure to recommend this book.

In this new edition of If You Were Me and Lived in... we travel through time. This time we visit the Middle Ages and let me tell you it´s very interesting and educational. The illustrator did a great job giving life to the words written by Carole and creating a vivid and colorful world.

I like that the author talked about all what people did, no matter their social status. She writes about everything, food, clothes, games, religion and more.

The book is longer than the ones in the Countries series but it´s understandable because we need more pages to discover a fascinating and rich world.

Here is another type history book about the Middle Ages by Carole Roman.

Here she compares today's small town in England to that of England back around the year 1000. Again we learn the type of clothes, the houses, and the food they ate at that time. The language back then was also strange.

It's a cute book full of information for the young and old, even I learned things while reading. And the pictures were charming and fit the story well.

The only thing that was a negative was the typos I found throughout the book. But overall it is a great learning tool.

Text seems dull to me and not particularly well written. I think even the title is grammatically incorrect. I cannot recommend this because of the poor grammar. Illustrations are mediocre. A passage showing disagreement of subject: "At twenty-one, they would become a knight, usually by proving his skills or participating in battle." Incorrect punctuation: "Rush torches dipped in animal fat gave the dimly lit interior it's only light."
