The real Garfield will always be his delightful, newsprint comic strip, and I have never felt much affection for these graphic-novel spin-offs. They tend to incorporate fantasy and other such freakish components that don't really belong in the Garfield world. But out of curiosity, I sometimes take one off of the library shelf and give it a read. Here's my analysis of Search for Pooky:

The title plot, which encompasses the majority of the book, concerns a simple premise: Nermal wants to get even, so he takes Pooky from a sleeping Garfield, but it mysteriously vanishes while he is planning his scheme. Garfield and Odie embark on a search that takes them to many places. I was not impressed by the storyline; it was significantly disjointed, with the primary events being connected by a very thin line. The climax is theoretically exciting but utterly random. And while the artwork maintains the classic Garfield style, some of the characters' facial expressions are overdone and queer-looking – yes, even for Garfield!

My biggest gripe, by far, is the portrayal of some teddy-bear aliens who venerate Pooky as their savior. They refer to him as the “chosen one,” who will help them win in battle. “It was foretold in the prophecy of the elders, a long time ago in a galaxy far away...” They place him on a throne of honor, and lines of teddy-bear aliens process down the halls, chanting, “All hail the chosen one! All hail the chosen one!” Is this not a mockery of the savior of the world, Jesus Christ? There are striking parallels. I was reminded of the Jerusalem scene with Christ riding a donkey through people chanting, “Hosanna to the son of David!” Some people may ridicule me for these claims, but as a devout Catholic, I will not support a book like this.

As for the two shorter stories, “Princess Priscilla” is rather sweet and unusual for Garfield. Although I felt the same way about “Friendly Foe,” the character designs were absolutely terrible! It looks like some crude, revolting computer game graphics. I don't know how else to describe it. Why did they feature a different illustrator? Couldn't we stick with tried-and-true?

I don't recommend this graphic novel. Perhaps I'll meet a better one in the future.

This book was ok. The first couple stories weren’t too bad and I actually enjoyed them. The last one though was pretty bad. The characters barely looked like the characters they’re based on which I think completely distracts from the story and it wasn’t that good of a story to begin with. Overall the book was better than some other new Garfield books that I’ve read but I still didn’t think it was that great.

A good mix of classic Garfield with some comic book elements.

This was so disappointing. I remembered Garfield very fondly, I always thought the comics were incredibly funny. But in this one, all the jokes fell flat for me.
