A future dystopian wasteland. A woman awakens from the past. She is the key to restoring humanity, except not everyone believes humans are worth saving.

Raven Winter lives a normal everyday life. Until one day, while on vacation, she is involved in an accident which freezes her in time. A century later, her body is found by a scientist on an expedition searching for the key to humanity’s survival. Hoping Raven’s body was frozen before the plague and the nuclear wars which followed it, he revives her. Now Raven, confused and suffering amnesia, is in a world completely alien to her own. All she knows is nothing is as it seems in the underground colony where she is a prisoner. Only one thing is clear. The residents have revived her for a single reason – to take her possibly fertile eggs.

Matthew, a lead scientist in the colony, is shocked when his specimen awakens. Thinking she would remain in a coma forever, he finds himself enthralled by the beauty and intelligence of the woman from the ice. Before long he is faced with a horrible decision – to harvest her or give up all he has ever known to set her free.

I think this book shows Ms. Fortune's excellent writing skills. The story ran very smoothly with a little bit of almost everything including mystery, suspense, prejudice, evil by the one who is called "the creator", the lone humble heart of Mathew who wishes only to do what is right despite his brother's determination to follow the Creator's command to kill Raven, and the determination of Raven to survive, just to name a few (phew!). I think this book has great potential to be a success.

This book has an interesting premise, but I cannot give it more stars. The writing is good, the story keeps your attention, but this first book in the series is so short and has an abrupt ending, which feels more like it should be the ending of a chapter, rather than the ending of this book. It felt so uncomfortable to me that I won't read on, in spite of the interesting story and my curiosity as to where it could lead.

I received an Advanced Review Copy of K.M. Fortune’s “Awakening” with no expectation of a positive review.
“Awakening” is a well written, well edited and well proofed short story, that is unfortunately billed as a serialized novel, which is the only reason I gave this book four stars instead of five. Some superstar writers may be able to get away with serialization. Personally, I have only bought “Interlude,” the serialized, digital only, book that was part of Dean Koontz’ “Odd Thomas” series, since it was digital only I could not get a used copy. I didn’t pay the extra money for Stephen King’s serialized novel “The Green Mile.” I don’t like book series’ where the individual books can’t be read as stand-alone novels, either. I don’t know why K.M. decided to serialize this, I just wish she hadn’t. If the idea of a serial novel does not bother you, then “Awakening” is Book One of the series you will want to get.
I was getting involved in the story since K.M. is an exceptional author. There was strong, complex initial character development. The dialogue was concise and believable. The story was fast paced, but the length of the story kept a lot of development from occurring. Then, before the hour was out, it suddenly ended with those glaring words: TO BE CONTINUED

This book was given to me against an honest review. It proved a great reading experience, adventure, mystery, suspense, science fiction even if in a dystopian environment, I kept being hooked to it. A world which could prove to become reality, when people believe blindly words spelled by their leaders as good or evil.... Zealots are not far from taking over.

This is the chilling story of Raven Winter, an American young woman who loved to push herself to her limits, and who had gone on holiday to the Sierra Nevada mountains to climb with her partner when an avalanche hit them and they were buried in ice. Raven was found a hundred years later in a frozen glacier, by a scientist who took her to his lab and did his best to revive her. However during the time lapse of a hundred years the world had been ravaged by wars including nuclear ones and a plague had hit the planet leaving woman infertile. The scientist, Matthew was himself a clone, who was part of a cult, who followed the creator, and who were religious fanatics and full of superstitious nonsense. In the mountains there also dwelt mutants who seemed to be hybrids of humans and animals and who mainly roamed in gangs to terrorise the nomadic peoples who just strove to survive. This is Raven's story of survival in a world she suddenly found herself in, knowing everyone she had known was long dead and surrounded by ice, with no food, shelter or weaponry for defence. Matthew helped her escape the cult's compound when he realised she was to be killed so that her eggs would be harvested, since she was a woman from before the plague. However in saving her life for the 2nd time running he had sent her into the icebound, scary wilderness for which she was so ill prepared. I love Raven's character, she is a fighter and though the obstacles she faced seemed insurmountable she never once gave up. This story is written in episodes but this first books' review is for the first 5 episodes which are now in one book. The book stops at a cliff hanger which has me craving to read book 2 asap. It is a thrilling, edge of the seat dystopian survival thriller at its best!

I was provided with a free copy of this book so I could give an honest review.

The Awakening sucked in me without me realizing it. It's not my normal read, but it sounded interesting. I was not let down.

It reminded me of Brave New World by Aldous Huxley to a degree. A future world, the technology to grow babies out of the womb entirely, unique government as a result, etc. To see the new world evolving at different paces in the eyes of a clone and Raven, a true human woman, was brilliantly presented.

This left me wanting to read more of the series to determine what happens next.

Awakening

I chose this rating of 5 stars because this book deserves it. It was written by a woman, for women (although I firmly believe all readers will find it as exciting and entertaining as I did). Imagine being frozen (literally) in time for more than a century. And when you awaken the world has changed beyond your wildest expectations. How will you survive - well, I for one, can't wait to find out. Come with me, on what promises to be an incredible read.

Quick little 90 minute read. This is her first serial book in the Forever Winter series. It was so refreshing to read a book that was well written. A lot happens in the first installment of this series. I immediately became invested in a couple of the characters and hope that they live long and prosper. I'm off to get book 2.

It just goes to show, put a religious faction, mutants and nomads together in a dystopian world where survival essentials are hard to find and what do you get? War! Human nature at its worse. Finding a frozen woman and defrosting her successfully adds another note. This book teaches you to speed read, leads into some deadly places and makes you wonder. A brilliant read by a fantastic writer!

Really interesting and different. Good reading!!!

I liked the story, what there was of it anyways. VERY disappointed that it turned out to be a little teased instead of a full book. But enjoyable and very different from any other sci-fi that I've read. Happy Reading!!!!

GREAT READ

It is certainly a different type of dystopian story. The backstory gives us a good idea of what type of mess Raven finds herself involved in now. Looking forward to more of your work on this series. Thank you for an imaginative story, Danny Scott.

I really enjoyed this book. The story line was unusual compared to other books I've read. The author knows how to keep you hanging though. I can't wait to see how this girl survives out in the freezing cold with out even shoes. Then the fact that the poor girl is hundreds of years in the future.

Nicely written apocalyptic introduction to what could be a very enjoyable novel.

Interesting twist to the old "world destroyed by nuclear war" premise. Well written, can't wait to read the whole novel.

I thought the story interesting but too short. The main characters had very little depth which I assume will evolve with the next few books. I would have liked more backdrop of the two main characters.

So good

What a great story.
So interesting I could not put the book down, I wished it had been much longer.
I Can not wait to continue to read the rest of the story. The adventure of raven is just starting and there is so much more this story has to tell.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
As a big fan of sci-fi and fantasy, my eye fell upon Awakening and I asked to receive a free copy of the book. When I started reading this book I did so without preconceived ideas or expectations. I gave it a fair chance and wanted it to surprise me. It did.

Not only is it well written, it's also fast - paced with a strong protagonist and a plot that shows great promise. I really enjoyed reading this book and am anticipating the next installment.

K.M Fortune is a writer that is worth your attention. At least I got to dream away and be drawn into her vision of a dystopian future. It has a great premise with a lot of disturbing elements. You just crave to know more about the world and the characters in the book. I am left hungry for part 2.

It's a rather short book, yet it doesn't feel like it. The story is complete, nothing is missing. Everything fits together. The story is built on several ideas which complete each other perfectly. I especially like the beginning with the mountain climbing scene. In my opinion a very good opening for this book.
First I read a sneak peek and then I luckily had the opportunity to read the complete story including a preview of book 2. I really enjoyed reading this. The whole story is quite interesting and I'm looking forward to the other parts.
