This is the second book in the Mackenzie August PI series, and like the first, it’s very entertaining. In this one, Veronica “Ronnie” Summers, the beautiful lawyer with whom Mack is in love, asks Mack to handle an investigation for her father, Calvin Summers. The job involves tracking down the identity of an informant who was responsible for sending Calvin to prison for tax evasion. Mack is reluctant to work for Calvin because Calvin makes it clear that if he succeeds, the informant will be in danger. But he agrees to take the case because Ronnie asks him to do it.

As he learns more about Calvin’s business dealings, he begins to see that tax evasion may not be Calvin’s only criminal offense. Calvin’s associates include some very unsavory characters, including mobsters. But Mack doesn’t break promises to clients, and he has promised Calvin that he’ll find the informant. So he pursues the investigation, all the while being unsure of what he’ll do when he learns the informant’s identity.

The book is fast-paced, and the “whodunit” aspect of the story is only one of its strengths. Colorful characters and humor abound. Mack is portrayed as an attractive guy whose opportunities for sex and romance can be at odds with his principles and sense of himself. He has a great relationship with his toddler son, Kix, and has “conversations” with him in which Kix plays the role of Mack’s conscience. He also has a good relationship with his dad and with his friend Manny, a U.S. Marshal. They joke that Manny is either Tonto to Mack’s Lone Ranger or it’s the other way around.

The book is set in Roanoke, Virginia, and in largely rural Franklin County to its south. The author weaves in some social commentary about the life choices available to poor people in the area. At one point, Mack says a local attorney recommended that he read Hillbilly Elegy to get some understanding of the culture of poverty in “Redneck Appalachia.” If I met Mack, I’d also recommend Deer Hunting with Jesus (which I read just before this book) for the same purpose.

Now that I’ve read the first two Mackenzie August books, I think I’m hooked on this series. My only complaint is one that I seem to have about quite a few books these days: the need for better copy-editing or proofreading. (Maybe I notice it a lot because I’ve worked as a professional editor.) The most egregious example here is a comment Mack makes to Ronnie about what clearly should be a “mnemonic device” but instead is written as a “pneumonic device.” That criticism aside, though, the book is very enjoyable and I recommend it.

I really liked this second book in the series, in addition to the prequel [which I read second].

Mack lives with his father, his son, and a friend who is a rather peculiar Federal Marshal. Mack is trying to earn his living as a PI, to be a great dad to his toddler, and to be an honorable man of faith. Most of the men he deals with in this story are not good; the two main women are both well educated professionals and are attracted to Mack. Herein lie a lot of Mack's struggles outside the professional and family life.

I am going to nitpick a bit here: Mack is a former English teacher who corrects other people's grammar and word choices. The stickler in me wishes Mr Lee had asked me to proofread his penultimate draft to spot obvious typos or (heaven forbid) errors. In this book, I did wonder -- with the characters in view -- whether the author was writing dialogue in their regional patois. I cannot proofread their speech patterns; they are beyond my ken.

Having said this, I look forward to the next book in the series very much!

I may have liked this book more than the first; it's hard to say for sure, because I liked them both quite a bit.

Mackenzie August is a really interesting character. In a lot of (good) ways, this series reminds me of Veronica Mars. Intriguing mysteries with a likable & witty main character who solves the crimes the police can't (or won't). I strongly suspect that fans of one would probably enjoy the other.

Marshmallows, do yourselves a favor: After you finish The Thousand Dollar Tan Line and Mr. Kiss and Tell, check out the Mackenzie August books!

Good Good Stuff

We get the complications of relationships and a good mystery thrown in to boot. The story takes us a little deeper into the world of Ronnie and some of the secrets she's hiding. I love the chemistry between the two,its almost like seeing Bogart and Be call in the beginning of falling in love. The.story flows so effortlessly that you forget at some point it has to end ,because the case has to be solved. This was good entertainment and a good way to spend time.

Mackenzie’s toes dabble in the local crime underworld, and he does it with his unique flair for humour and straight talking. A little surprise is in store for him in regards to the woman he’s attracted to and - let’s say no more. Loving this series!

Uplifting

Mackenzie is witty, and driven. He is hired by the underbelly, and takes the job to be close to the woman who has his heart. Things get complicated, and messy, and GOOD!

My newest favorite author

I love discovering authors who consistently write well. I have read the second and third books in this series and will be doubling back to read the first book. I could hardly put these novels down, they are written that well. I'm a fan.

great book

The Second Secret has our hero, Mackenzie August, trying to find out who betrayed a local business man to the local Federal Prosecutor. Mackenzie really has a lot to uncover and this one had more investigating in it. As a teacher, I would prefer he were back in the classroom, but this was still really great!

PI detective Mackenzie August fell hard for a femme fatale named Ronnie Summers in the previous volume, but she told him she had three secrets. She loves him too, but they remain separated because of these issues, and the second one is addressed here when Mack takes a job working for her rich father and he discovers her dad is highly connected to some organized crime (second secret). How does Mack do his job but maintain his integrity? With wit and irrevence and some engaging interactions with a host of characters thsat help shed some light on organized crime's relation to the cycle of suffering and poverty in rural America.

This one had a few typos and even a grammatical error, which I feel justified in letting irritate me as Mackenzie's character teaches English and points out proper grammar and effective word choices to others more than once in this novel. I do like this series and will certainly keep reading. Also, the arguments he has with his conscience that are conveyed as imagined discussions with Kix who is right there with him are a clever and very effective way to get this rumination across to the readers.

Another score

Yep, I’m an Alan Lee fan for life, it seems. I did not pass Go after reading the first book in this series, August Origins; just went straight in to The Second Secret to lap up more of the same: witty banter and philosophizing from my favorite MMA detective, Mack August.

As with the first book in the series, I didn’t guess whodunnit, and Mack remained as appealing a protagonist as ever, with his adorable son, and equally adorable father.

I’m less convinced of the adorableness of his femme fatale, but that’s the way of these things, I suppose: men fall for women who are terrible for them all the time. Hence the term femme fatale.

Anyway, it’s a fun ride, even when aspects of it made me profoundly uncomfortable. (Geez, Mack, aren’t you worried about your kid getting targeted by the Mob??)

I do wish these indie authors would spring for a copy editor, however. I found my share of typos. Not enough to turn me off, but a good handful.

Other than that, terrific read, and a real page turner. I’ve already downloaded book #3!

I am loving Mackenzie "Mack" August, son Kix, sidekick Manny, his dad, the sherrif and the whole Roanoke gang. Even most of the gangsters have some likeability. Mack can't help his attraction to Veronica "Ronnie" Summers, but every time he turns around, more secrets are revealed. There is much that goes on, but suffice it to say that you won't be able to put the book down. A new woman from Mack's past enters the picture. Mack is hired by Ronnie's father, an unsavory character who was just released from prison, to find out who in his large business enterprises, reported him to authorities which resulted in his lock up for tax evasion. Mack realized whoever the culprit is will not make it out alive if he reveals their identity. There are twists and turns, Mack is quite the character. I love his humor and sarcasm, his family, his determination to try and keep his life on track and do the right thing. You won't be sorry if you get hooked on this series.

This is the second book is this fun new series. MacKenzie is a little bit like Spenser, a little bit like Chuck Norris, and and an all around good guy trying to live a life of honor. This book, like the first is full of witty one liners and MacKenzie is a character you will root for. Plus, some of the secondary characters Mackenzie deals with are both shady and goofy enough to be part of a Carl Hiaasen book. This time, Mackenzie takes a job in part because of his feelings for Ronnie Summers, a woman he is clearly in love with, but who just may be more screwed up than a seven layer burrito from Taco Bell. She's an accomplished, bright professional with a complicated personal life and parental issues. Scott Ellis does a superb job with the narration. My fingers are crossed that Audible will give us the other books in the series and that Mr. Ellis will return to read them.

ANOTHER GEM BY ALAN LEE

Last week I started and finished the Manny Martinez (AKA Sinatra) Series, and this week started the Mackenzie August Series. I downloaded the entire Series and Monday started reading Book 1 and, when finished, Book 2.

Mr. Alan writes great Protagonists & Antagonists along with supporting characters. The dialogue makes you ‘hear’ the characters talking. His plots and subplots weave an exciting, page-turning, compelling story. Just when you think you’ve solved the mystery, you’re presented with a plot twist that leaves you scratching your head… I know I did.

This series is the exception to the rule - once you start reading you can’t put it down. I know I couldn’t. And I’m betting you will be too.

I’ve already told my Family & Friends about the Mackenzie August Series. This is a ‘Must-Read’ Series for any serious Crime/Mystery buff.

I liked this second outing of Mackenzie August even better than the first. I think that's in part because I already knew most of the characters and this. novel enables me to get to know them even better. As mentioned before, our protagonist is very much in the Spenser/Bolitar model, but he has his own personality quirks that make him a likable hero I plan to follow throughout the series. I particularly enjoyed his dialogues with his son Kix (who cannot talk, but the conversation is imagined nonetheless.) The mystery here is intriguing but since neither the reader nor August likes his client (bullying father of potential love interest attorney) we're not really rooting for the "culprit" to be discovered. It's totally fun, great characters and easy reading. I'm going to space my reading of each entry so as not to overdose, but savor them over a longer period of time.

When Mack August fell in love with Ronnie, she told him she had three flaws. The first was her arranged engagement to another man she does not love.

In this installment, we find out the second secret is her father is a criminal. She asks Mack to help discover who provided the evidence to get her father sent to prison for income tax evasion.

But as he begins to look into it, he discovers the father may have an even darker criminal life than his daughter knows -- and there may be many people who wanted him sent away.

The series is on full bloom, as is Mack's love for baseball and the Washington Nationals. I've already downloaded the next book in the series.

Gosh I love these books! Wise-cracking private investigator and tall drink of water, Mackenzie August is back following in Phillip Marlowe’s footsteps. Mac is asked by a nasty mob boss to find the leak in his organisation - will Mac turn the informant over or congratulate him? These are incredibly fun novels, Lee gives Mac a continual stream of irreverent one-liners and as well as a strong moral compass. Mac’s investigative method is similar to Marlowe’s: basically annoy people until the truth comes out. 🎧 Scott Ellis embodies Mac, delivering the one-liners with panache and comedic timing, you can tell me he enjoys narrating these as much as we enjoy listening to them.

Good but not like the first one I read. Ronnies dad contacted Mack about doing a job for him. While in her dads office Calvin ended up hitting his daughter Ronnie. P.O'd Mack to no end. Calvin wanted Mack to find out who was stealing money off of him. So Mack went around to his businesses and checked them out. Trailer Parks, a farm and other places he owned. Mack found out that Ronnie (the love of his life)was engaged to another man she didnt love. Lots of beatings going on with the men. Mack was suppose to have been a BIG guy and strong. He took his beatings as well as gave some too. Well did Mack find out the real thief of the bunch and will the beatings ever stop?

Each book gets better.

I am enamored with Mack August and his posse. Consisting of his father , his very handsome friend, Manny and the baby Kix. He's enamored with Ronnie, she of many secrets and great beauty. So when she asks him to work for her father, a businessman and not a likeable man, he agrees. There are lots of bad guys to be wary of but Mackenzie marches on with good sleuthing skills and sarcasm. The author tied it up with a bow and left me agreeing and smiling. Worth your time.

Good suspenseful read!

This is the second book in this series about MacKenzie "Mack" August, private investigator. I wasn't sure I would like this series but I find that I like the somewhat fast pace of of the storyline involving the August household and this case for the father of his "friend, Ronnie" who has many secrets that he is unraveling one at a time. This case has many twists and turns that kept me turning the pages.

Liked But

Continue to be drawn into the characters in this series. First off I love the vocabulary growth I am getting from these books because of the lead characters stupendous dialogue.

Adore the mythical discussion Mackenzie has with his toddler son Kix. Appreciate the complexity of the men in the August household. Not sure I like Kristen, am with Kix on this one. Wish Ronnie would just come clean and dump the fiancé.

I am off to another book in the series.

Absolutely hilarious

I have fallen in love with this character and it is the first book in my adult years where I have had to check out the meaning of words in the dictionary!!
The main character is a private eye with a love of speaking in 1800 old english. Can't get enough of him. I can work out the endings by the third chapter but that's not why I enjoy them so much i am just starting book 3 of a 7 part series and will be bereft when I finish book 7!!!

Loved it

I find that I have throughly enjoyed both Mackenzie August Books (Books 1 & 2). They are very well written with action, wit, and morality to some degree, and I am thrilled with Manny and Kix. The August men are something else, that includes dad, son, and grandson. I am looking forward to enjoying Book 3. I generally just do one book in a series but this one has me hooked. Don’t read the first one if you don’t want to become an addict.

Very enjoyable read . Allen Lee is a talented writer and he keeps you guessing on who the informant was.

This the second book of Allen Lee's that I have read and I'm looking forward to reading the rest of his books. He is a talented writer keeping the reader guessing who the bad person is.

Decided to end my weeks vacation with another MacKenzie August novel and it was just the cake. Second in the series and gave some additional insight into his relationship with Ronnie. Enjoying these books that are easy to read in one day. The author sets a good pace and while you can put it down to make lunch or dinner, you are compelled to pick it up again to see where it is going.

2 as good as one

If you are looking for a new PI similar to Noah Braddock, Spenser, and John Cuddy I think you will like Mackenzie August. I have read the first two. The first I read through Kindle Unlimited. I have now purchased the Kindle version for 2-4. That’s how much I like the stories.

A series I will read until the author quits writing.

A series I will read until the author quits writing. He has the ability to make me laugh and think. It's been years since I've read John D. MacDonalds Travis McGee but these first two books compare very well with them. It's A great American mystery that is worth a read. Five stars and on to the third in the series.
