~One will be born Four she shall bind Two of Friendship Two of Love Shall it will be The Aether~
I lived a normal life for a soon to be seventeen years old. Well if you can call having a paranoid mom normal. In till I learned my mom really isn't so paranoid after all. Everything she has done. Everything she taught me, was for a very important reason. A reason I soon found out one dreary dark night. It's just a nightmare I told myself, till I had to grow a backbone and realize this is my life now. A life of Royalty. A life of powers. Bonds and war. A life I have to except. A life that I Am To Live
In a world of mundane humanity, Basil's mom is a little different. Emergency drills are the norm. One a.m. wake ups, running, hiding, the usual oddness. One early morning wake up is different, though. They've already done their drill this week. This time her mom gives her a pendant and words to repeat and sends her into the woods. She does as she's told and uses the pendant. But after a bright light comes darkness. Out of that darkness comes madness, though. Where is she? This doesn't look like Earth anymore, Toto. Everyone is using strange words, has interesting marks and these animals? Just where exactly did her mom sends her?
This was an interesting opening to the series. Just enough info to lay groundwork but enough mystery to keep you guessing and looking for the next. I do like that Basil is no shrinking violet. She is confused, overwhelmed and not going to just accept whatever she's told. Maybe running off wasn't the smartest thing to do but it wasn't a completely TSTL moment. But that ending? Yeah, we readers are going to need some explaining in the next book. Oh, and I can't tell if there are typos or that's the language? Thrown? Is that supposed to be throne? It is used a couple times. The language base seems to be Latin but thrown still means tossing not a royal seat so I'm confused. There are others but that one really got me.
Okay, usually I am pretty kind when it comes to reviews because I know how rough a bad review can be on a new author, but omg do not publish something that seems like it was edited by an eighth grader with spellcheck! If you expect to make a living writing than at least have the decency to give your readers a finished product. In this day and age there is really no excuse. If you can’t afford an editor, go to any Facebook group and find yourself some beta readers who will easily find most of these mistakes, and for free no less. Story was interesting but main character was wishy-washy at best.
Four stars because is so short! I know we were warned about the slow romance and cliffhanger but did it have to be 13 chapters only!? That didn't even wetted my appetite! You should warn the reader this is not a book but a novella. On the other hand, the characters were cool, Quinn was my love at first read; the plot is awesome and Basil is very annoying. Hahaha. Yeah, I'm mean with teenagers as main characters 'cause they tend to be very impulsive in their decisions (which is only a reality). Even so it was an entertaining read... But I wish it was longer! 😭😭
It took me roughly an hour and a half (if that) to read. A rather annoying cliffhanger that made no damn sense at all. Like seriously why would she do that? She knows nothing of the world she is in and tries to kill the person she's with because she was offended they thought she was a pansy??? She barely even batted an eye at the forced bond but she lost her shit and tried to murder him because they all think she's a pansy. I want to read book two almost just because I want to see her get her dumb arse hurt after ditching him. It was fine up until that really stupid move, slightly confusing and rushed majorly but that could kind of be over looked.
What would you do if you found out that you weren't born on Earth? Basil has just travelled through a portal to a world that makes no sense, only to find out that she's a major political figure. Now to work it all out. I love Me Martin's books but I feel that this one could benefit from the services of a developmental editor. There's so much potential in this book that isn't tapped and a few grammar and syntax issues. Despite that, I'm loving this series and can't wait to see the next one.
So glad I didn't pay for this story written by a child. Pages were just repeated paragraphs and the last several pages were previews for other books. She actually thanks her beta reader. I can only assume the beta reader is also a child because how can you not see all the errors. I think almost every page had an error of some sort. Story has tons of potential but is in need of serious editing.
I thought this was a decent beginning to the series. There isn't much character development for the few men in her life, but as of right now, it doesn't take away from the storyline. The storyline is good and kept me reading, wanting more. Basil on the other hand, for all of her inner dialogue about needing to not show the fear she feels, sure is whiny. I'm not sure if I like her at this point. Only time will tell.
All it would've taken was some people to edit it, there were lots of spelling mistakes and repeated passages. I really wanted to get absorbed by the story but couldn't thanks to the lack of editing.
Outside of the editing, it was an ok prequel to what I hope would be a good series, it felt a little bit unfinished, a rushed ending.
This story is intriguing and action packed. Basil is thrust into a strange new wold, and while she is a strong character, she is out of her element and trying to figure out what is going on. While the story does end on a cliffhanger, I cheered Basil’s actions :) Hopefully book 2 is out soon
I liked the idea behind the story. The characters and plot. But there were a lot of errors. Parts of the story repeating itself. Like a computer glitch. Otherwise....a good start.
Loved it!! And that ending!! She's Basil was like I'm done with this, I'm in charge now!!!! Dylan you shouldn't have missed her off!! Absolutely loved it!! I need the second book!!??!!?? Also please make it longer??
What an awesome book!! It’s so funny and Basil is surprisingly amazing when it’s all said and done... but that cliffhanger is going to have me reeling until I get to book two!
