Infection Z – The Apocalypse

Mike and Tony were on a weekend getaway of drinking beer, playing cards and solving the world’s problems at Tony’s cabin when the end began.
They had often discussed how fragile the world was.
The world’s many unstable political leaders could throw the world into chaos at any time over something as simple as a someone waking up on the wrong side of the bed.
The financial markets of the world were constantly on the brink of plunging the world into bankruptcy.
Someone being late on their car payment could push the world into a major depression.
Society was a mess.
The police stopping a speeder was enough to have one group crying discrimination, resulting in large cities being brought to a standstill by riots and protesters.
Mike and Tony claimed they wouldn’t be surprised to see the world come apart at the seams any day now.

Even though they claimed that they wouldn’t be surprised to see the world self-destruct, when the end of the world came, at first, they didn’t recognize that the end had begun.
What they saw happening around them was something they had never considered.
It just wasn’t possible.
They quickly discovered the one problem of the world that they didn’t have a solution for.
And apparently, neither did anyone else.

Three boys from Tennessee had joined the Navy with exciting expectations of seeing the world, just like the Navy had promised in their recruiting brochures.
Instead of seeing the world, Seaman Rogers, Seaman Davis and Petty Officer Chervanak found themselves stationed at the Naval Air Station in Nevada.
It was an important base out in the Nevada desert where the Navy tested many of the country’s most advanced aircraft and weapons and trained America’s best pilots.
In the sweltering heat of the Nevada desert, they never had much of a chance to see the world.
However, as they soon came to realize, their assignment in the Nevada desert gave them a front row seat to see the end of the world.

Mike, and Tony never knew what happened, all they could do was just try to survive.
The men stationed at the Naval Air Station in Nevada knew what had happened, but it didn’t seem that this knowledge would really make a difference?
Petty Officer Chervanak and the men at Fallon fought desperately to find a way to survive.
In their efforts to survive, they stumbled onto something that may not only allow them to survive, but could also save the future of the Human Race.

Before the end began, they all knew that there were many ways the world could end.
But the one question none of them had thought about before was, “Would there be any way to survive?”
It was a hard question to answer when you had no way of knowing how the world would end.
It became an even harder question to answer when they found out what was destroying mankind and the world.

I was fully prepared to be a hater.

The part of the blurb I did read (no I did not read the full thing) seemed to say it was going to be about a group of buddies in the woods trying to survive the apocalypse and I was kinda down for that but the cover, well, let's just say some questionable decisions were made in its creation. It also became quickly apparent that this book isn't about buddies in the woods, there's a solid chunk of it that's happening on a military base. If you're familiar with my reviews of zombie novels you're probably tired of me saying how I'm tired of reading about military people in the apocalypse. Here's it's almost more like office people in the apocalypse, the military people we spend a decent amount of time with are not the badass that can survive anything type, they're a doctor and a computer guy, we never really get too deep into their characters, but they manage to be decently engaging and to convey just how bad things are. The group I thought it was going to be about turned out to be just 2 guys trying to make it back to one of the guy's place to rescue his wife and child. We also get the wife's POV which was pretty solid and got really tense at times.

The zombie lore was interesting too and it manages to avoid the whole "how did it go unnoticed until there was a critical mass of infected" plot hole, it's not something super crazy and these are pretty typical zombies, it was just decently done. The pacing was pretty good, there were only a couple parts that were a little slow or felt unnecessary.

Just a generally pretty solid zombie read.

Realistic Zombie Plot

I enjoyed this first book and look forward to more hopefully soon. The cause of the zombie outbreak was unique and an interesting twist. Would governments put biological weapons in space to store them. Scary thought but plausible. The characters are interesting and I look forward to getting to know them more. I am always frustrated that females in many of these stories are simply clueless. Linda saying we are saved just from hearing a broadcast bothered me. Also if that was my child no matter how frightening I think preparing them is important. No talking to others, being quiet etc....the thinking of keeping the child in the dark to save them from seeing the worst will come back to bite them. Yes kids will be scared, but prepared is better than losing your safety net because a child doesn't understand the new world. Just my opinion but as a mom, grandmother, and a teacher there are ways to slowly talk to kids and prepare them. I am hoping the author dies this in the next book and also we meet some female survivors who are learning to adapt. All Linda does is cook and won't survive if the men are hurt or killed. Thank you Me. Chesla for an adventure filled first book in my favorite genre.

Why don't authors proofread their work? I am so tired of having a good book ruined by errors.

A Great Surprise

When I came across this book I was just browsing and not sure of what I might come across. I began this book unsure of what to expect. What a great surprise to find a book that I found so engaging! The only thing I found somewhat annoying was the two distinctly separate stories. I believe I would have enjoyed the book even more if the two stories could have somehow come together. Despite this I enjoyed this book immensely and will be checking out more books by this author.

This is a great story with great characters. Totally worth reading. Just don't expect to get much done until you finish it.
