Ruby

I needed to get away. Someplace safe. Someplace far away from the mess I've made of my life. Turns out I have a half-brother I never knew about. I took a chance, left everything behind to go find him in Riverbend, Montana. Then because I’m me and I have my luck, my car broke down.

The surly cowboy who picked me up didn’t seem thrilled with the idea that I was showing up unannounced at Long Valley Ranch. But he didn’t know I had no options left. It was either this or go back to the ex-boyfriend who hit me.

I didn’t know what to expect of life on the ranch. I know didn’t expect to make friends. I didn’t expect to feel like I had family.

And Cody… well no one could have expected Cody.

Cody

She lied to me. She told me she knew Jake and Ellie but when she showed up at their door I could tell she was a total stranger to them. Even if she was related to Jake by blood. Jake and Ellie being who they are took her in of course. Because of the bruise around her eye.

Someone hit her. And while that didn’t sit well with me, it didn’t mean I was suddenly going to trust her.

No, instead I was going to watch her. I watched Ruby a lot. Until I stopped watching her and started wanting her…

♦ Note: this series is made up of five novellas or something similar to chapters books. They are all under two hundred pages so they go really quick!

So, you would think this book was about Jake and Ellie but nope, it's Cody and Ruby's story. Don't worry though, we still get plenty of Jake and Ellie.

If you read The Baby, you've met Cody. He's Rich's son and used to be a rodeo star until both he and his horse got injured.

And remember that letter Ellie wrote? Well, it ended up in Ruby's hands. Her life hasn't been so great so she took that as a sign and headed to meet Jake, that is, until her car broke down. And that's where Cody meets her.

He gives her a ride to Jake and Ellie's and things actually go pretty well. They offer her a room and she helps as much as she can around the house and ranch.

Slowly, she and Cody start getting to know each other and they get to spend more time together when he starts picking her up at the diner where she got a job.

description

She learning to cook at the diner and starts making desserts...even bringing cookies home to Cody as a thank you for all the rides he's been giving her.

Things take a turn when she suggests they go see a rodeo. They decide to "fake date" and end up having a good time.

Cody's been under some stress keeping his Dad's drinking a secret but when it leads to a near disaster, all bets are off. Fortunately, that near disaster forces Cody to examine his feelings and he comes up with a plan.

I wasn't sure how I felt about Ruby at first but I certainly did like her growth. I thought her relationship with Jake was really sweet but it's her relationship with Ellie that shines. (Okay...maybe with Gary too!)

I was happy to get more of Cody. He's a really stand up type of guy and I loved his "plan" to get Ruby even if he came off a bit cavemanish!

You know some ugly drama is coming and come it does. Ugh...I really felt bad for Ruby - at first - but my heart went out to Cody. I was happy he was able to catch up.

And that epilogue? Just perfect. ~sigh~

*** Book Q & A***

* How did the book make you feel?: Oh my goodness! What a pleasant surprise. I sure loved this book! There was light angst.
* How do you feel about how the story was told?: It was told in multiple POV. There were a few typos, but they weren’t super distracting. The pacing of the story was good. The climax was a bit predictable, but it was such a great story overall.
* What did you think about the main characters?: Cody was a horrible jerk at first to Ruby, but he eventually begins to trust and care for her. His attitude transformation is very well-done. Ruby’s character development and determination throughout the book to be a better person is moving. I loved the characters!
* Which parts of the book stood out to you?: When Cody throws Ruby over his shoulder. Ahem. Sexy cowboy caveman! It was a slow burn, though.
* What themes/tropes did you detect in the story?: Cowboy romance, enemies to lovers, overcoming addiction
* What did you think about the ending?: It was so satisfying. You’re rooting for them!
* What is your impression of the author?: Gonna binge now!

This is part of "The Bride" Series, but this is actually Jake's sister Ruby's very own story-with Jake and Ellie as side characters in the background. Ruby has had a total shit life, she's out of a home, her car died and now she's pretty much destitute. She discovers she has a brother, and when she shows up on his doorstep, her reception by Luke is lukewarm, to say the least. Jake's ranch hand Cody detests Ruby on sight. He doesn't trust her and he's pretty shitty to her for quite a bit of this story. I definitely got my "Asshole Hero" cravings filled with this story. This one will definitely go on my re-read shelf. I really think I need to check out S. Doyle's other stories now.

A sweet and quick hot cowboy romance. I really needed it after the emotional rollercoaster of my Susan Fanetti read. I think Ms. Boyle shall replace Kelly Elliott as my go to cowboy author.

Short, sweet, funny, cute, emotional and hot. That's pretty much how I would want to summarise this lovely book for you.

The storyline was really really good. Although I didn't quite like that Cody and Ruby's story interrupted Jake and Ellie's story (cz it's I am partial and when I give my heart to someone... It's theirs to keep.. I hate interruptions!), I was undeniably fascinated with how the story licked up and where it was going. I read through all the main parts, skipping the rest because I know the vibe that the book is trying to deliver. Their story was similar, yet very different from JEllie's. Their chemistry and the compatibility was on the spot!

Most books push you to become misogynists...thanks to their Hero's and boring Heroines... But this isn't one of them. I loved the female character over the male. Ruby is down to earth. She's such a good person inside-out that the readers can literally feel it in their bones. Honestly, Ruby's story got me really curious about the book because I initially had no intentions on pursuing this book. It's BEAUTIFUL to see how silky smooth the transitions in the story were.

S. Doyle has this (uncanny, in a way) ability to get me hooked on her books. She did such a good job at distinguishing between all her main characters. Ruby and Cody's story felt personal in some ways. It normalises insecurities and mistakes and shows that everybody deserves the right to redemption (if that makes sense).

Cody is an amazing character too. I love how helpless he gets when it comes to Ruby. LOL. He's so cute. Like Ruby, he comes from a heavy past. The dynamics between the tow of them, especially the nickname he gives Ruby—calls her 'Seattle'. Hehe. It was interesting to see how different their dynamics were when they 'unofficially' got into a relationship with one another, especially when you compare it with most romance novels in general.

Yes, the book did lack a lil in the romance department because the book was really short...and certain incidences were repetitive...hence the 4 shiny stars!✨✨

The Bride series has been an absolute joy to read and The Homecoming, which is Ruby and Cody's story, is an excellent addition.

After opening a letter addressed to her absentee mother, Ruby learns she has a half brother she had no idea existed. Struggling with life in the city, with no job and no money, Ruby packs up her belongings and sets off for Montana in search of a new start. When her car breaks down, it is ranch hand Cody who, albeit reluctantly, comes to her rescue.

So well written, I loved the interactions between Ruby and Cody, their banter, their push and pull, had me laughing out loud. The chemistry between them was hot but it was a slow burn, which allowed us to see their relationship develop. There's a wonderful cast of supporting characters and, despite the hardships of living in a farming community, this author makes it sound a wonderful place to live. Heartwarming, funny, a little angsty, but very sweet and sexy, it gets five big stars from me.

This book can be read as a standalone but as a huge fan of this series, I was delighted to get another glimpse into the life of Jake and Ellie and their expanding family, although they're not the main focus of this story. I really hope this series continues, as I'd love to read more about the residents of Riverbend.

This is not a typical adult book that automatically jumps into the intimate part. S. Doyle build Ruby and Cody's story with a real life approach, overcoming first impressions, building trust, friendship and finally intimacy. It is refreshing to read a book that will make you reflect on life and not just read for the sake of smut just because it belongs to adult category. S. Doyle is a great treat for those who seek not only sexiness but soul searching and finding oneself as well. Take a dive in the series and fall in love and identify yourself to the characters you'll meet along the way.

Rating 4.5 stars.

S. Doyle's series, The Bride, has been a great ride.  The Homecoming is as fun, sexy and well written as the previous books.  These men are not touchy-feely sweet guys.  Cody, like Jake (from the first four books), is the epitome of the tough western man.  He's not going to tell you what he's thinking or how much he cares in most circumstances.  Which is difficult in the beginning of a relationship but special when he finally does admit his feelings.  Ruby's life with her and Jake's mother has been even harder on her than Jake.  She's never experienced being cared for or part of a family.  She's certainly never had a healthy relationship with a man.  Coming to meet Jake and Ellie, is the best decision Ruby's ever made.  She finds family, love and a good man.  The book has a nice touch of tension caused by Ruby's ex-boyfriend, Jake's dad and Ruby and Cody's initial antagonistic relationship which adds nicely to the sweeter elements of the story.  Doyle has said she enjoyed writing this series and I've certainly enjoyed reading it.

Well!!!... I lost hours of sleep for this awesome finale!!
At one point around 3am I put it down to sleep and within 10 mins had to pick it back up and finish it, it was THAT amazing!!

I haven't had so many book butterflies in a long time, Ruby only had to speak or even think her inner thoughts to us and I was either feeling it hard with butterflies or in tears - just LOVED IT!

I didn't think it would be possible to enjoy Cody and Ruby more than Ellie and Jake, but I definitely did and Ruby's building relationship with Jake was gripping too - just about broke my heart when he said they weren't family. I was desperate for her to be okay! The author did a superb job with this book - write more like this please SD!!

Absolutely fantastic series, brilliant start to my reading year!

S.Doyle continues her 5 star streak. I love her writing and story telling style. I loved that Ruby, Jake's half-sister who I met in The Baby got her own HEA. I also loved that it was with Cody. The attraction between them was strong and I loved the slow build of their romance.

I felt like I read and finished this book way too soon. I loved the themes in it and I loved being in Long Valley again. It always feel like I'm visiting old friends when I do. Plus seeing Jake and Ellie again is always a pleasure, not to mention I got to meet Jack!

If you haven't picked up this series, you don't know what you're missing!

That's how I feel right now.
I practically inhaled this series and it took me completely by surprise.
I was expecting a pretty easy read with middling angst, a satisfying amount of smut, and a HEA.
...
I got the angst, alright. And the smut. And the HEA.
What I wasn't expecting was the emotional whiplash and the total incapability to tear myself away from Ellie and Jake's story.
I couldn't do it.
I fell hard. Real hard.
And then their story was over, happy but over, and it was Cody and Ruby's turn to wreck my heart.
And wreck it they did. Jesus, these two. Their level of angst is nowhere near the heights of Ellie and Jake but damn, in the last few chapters they bloody well near gave me a coronary.
I knew their story would come good. They'd get their happy ending but still... way to put a vice around a girl's heart, Doyle.
description

I love being with these people. Their wit and their hot tempers, softened by the exhausting amount of love they have for each other.
And after four books of Ellie and Jake being, quite frankly, infuriating, it was so nice to have a one and done with Ruby and Cody.
One book to find each other.
One book to nearly fuck everything up.
One book to fall disgustingly in love, with a side of Ellie and Jake being meddlesome matchmakers.
...
Bliss.

But now it's over and I'm bereft. Where will I get my fix of alpha-mallow ranchers and their foul-mouthed better halves?
...
There's Luke, though? Lovely Luke. There could be a Luke book, right?
...
RIGHT?!

The Homecoming is yet another great addition to The Bride series. These stories so carefully crafted by S. Doyle are simply a joy to read. Just when I thought I wouldn't love another couple quite like Jake and Ellie, along comes Ruby and Cody. Jake's half-sister is a woman who needs is desperate to feel loved and needed. Her unexpected arrival to the Talley household and ranch takes everyone by surprise. And although she isn't sure where her future will lie, I was more than hopeful she'd find a place in the heart of Montana.

I really loved her spirit and her ability to soothe others even when she thought herself unworthy. Ruby is truly good person and even though her first run-in with the brooding Cody is anything but pleasant, there is a definite spark between these two that even Jake and Ellie acknowledge, reminding themselves a bit like they used to be before they found love with each other. Cody is never easy but his own personal issues, particularly with his Dad, have Ruby wanting to know more. These two are as stubborn as can be and I enjoyed watching their sparring and the fight to resist one another. Even with the differences in their upbringing and surroundings, the City Girl and the Cowboy really make a great match, one that made me smile from beginning to end.

There is such a special warmth to this series, reminding all of us how important to have good family and friends around us when we need them most. The small-town feel is the perfect backdrop to this and Jake and Ellie's love story. Seeing what matters most in the world and the simplicity of every day that is cause enough to make one happy.

I honestly could read about these characters forever. They are well-written and full of heart.

I happily give The Homecoming a solid 5 stars!!

The cowboy and the city girl

I fell in love all over again with The Homecoming. Ms. Doyle has such a style of writing that flows easily and brings us relatable characters who hit you right smack in the heart. The small town appeal is the ideal setting for Cody and Ruby’s love story.

Ruby is Jake’s half sister, and her showing up at the ranch unexpectedly has everyone surprised and a bit suspicious. At this point, feeling downtrodden and weary, Ruby is ready to leave her past behind and start a do-over on life. She is a woman in need of love and healing. Ruby is unsure Jake will accept her wholly into the Talley household. I really loved how her character blossomed the longer she stayed, and for once truly felt needed. Ruby befriends Cody who works on the ranch, and their friendship is created out of shared pain and anger.

Cody has issues with his alcoholic father, and Ruby knows all too well how that feels. She has a knack of reading Cody when he’s hurting. Love that she can sooth Cody when he needs it. Cody’s patience and compliments go a long way to making Ruby with her self-esteem issues. I love the fun and humor infused in their banter, especially when Cody calls her “Seattle”.

The Homecoming is a well written, and heartwarming story that made me smile. Just when I thought the series was over, Jake and Ellie, once again graced us with their appearance. I love that we got to see how the Talley family is ever changing. Another great addition to the Bride series, and I hope we see more in the future.

I received a copy and voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

"Once the attraction switch goes on, you can’t turn it off."

Много прямо высказанных откровений, вроде "I was jealous as shit and mad at him for making me feel this way", когда думаешь, вот да, черт возьми, да.

Oh my gosh! I've been reading this series all day!

Cody is a lot like Jake. Big tall brooding cowboy who does not do feelings well. He has some anger issues. But all in all, a real winner of a man. A bit caveman at times, but those are so fitting with his character.

Ruby starts off the story in a bad place. Zero self esteem, she views herself as non deserving of anything good. She grows into herself in Montana. Learns about family. About cooking. About ranching and goats. She learns she is worthy. Mostly she is taught this by Cody.

They too, had a slow burn romance. But once it took off, whew! Hold onto your panties! Smokin' hotness ahead. I absolutely loved how Cody got Ruby into bed the first time. I've never read a story where it happened like that. So caveman-ish.

I had one continuity issue with this story. It bugged me enough that it lost a star in my rating. I really liked this one. I really liked Cody. I really liked the person that Ruby turned into. I really wanted to 5 star this one, and I don't hand those out lightly. But Ruby is 22 years old in this story. Jake (her brother) is 30. 8 years difference. Their mom left Jake when he was 12. Ruby should be at least 13 years younger than him, not 8. If he is 30 in this story, then Ruby is 17. Except shes not. She is clearly a grown woman. She is 22. So I know this is semantics. But it bugged me. If you can overlook it, then go for it. Way good story.

This book was bittersweet as I knew it was the end end of the series.

I was curious about Jakes sister and how he would accept her. Her dad back story sucked me straight in and I felt protective of her straight away. As Codys reaction was similar I knew he was going to love her with his whole heart.
The story of him and his dad was sad, I know it was mentioned in previous books about Rich and his drinking, and it was sad to see it get worse. Both Cody and Ruby were a little bit broken and controlled by other people and their actions. Together they were strong enough to help each other see the light, in themselves, each other and life.
The added chapters with Jake and Ellies point of view was nice, it was nice to see Jake come to think of her as his sister, as family is family.
This was beautifully written, yet again and I am so sad that it's the end as I loved this whole series so much.

Near Perfection

I loved the story of Ruby, half-sister to Jake and Cody, Jake’s ranch hand. She’d intercepted a letter written by Jake’s wife to her mother, explaining where Jake had been living and that they were expecting a child. Ruby was hoping to have a place to hole up after her ex-boy friend had hit her. Cody finds her on the side of the road when her car broke down and brings her to the ranch where she begins her self-discovery in improving her life and healing her soul. Cody distrusted Ruby and her motive for being there but discovers his need to protect her. It is such a well crafted story, except for editing errors. I laughed, shed a few tears and celebrated for the couple when they finally give in to their sexual chemistry. The book also follows the happy conclusion to Jake and Ellie fulfilling their dreams of a family. It was a perfect HEA for all.

When the Bride Series "ended" with book 4 I was devastated, it was one of the best series I had read in quite some time. Now, Ruby and Cody get their own story about moving forward despite what has happened in the past, believing in yourself and valuing yourself. Ruby is deeply flawed due to many abusive/neglectful relationships in her young life and Cody is trying to do the right thing by both his alcoholic father and his boss. Both find strength in friendship and ultimately love. Although this book has its fair share of sex scenes, it didn't feel like sex was the main story (although judging by the number of orgasms Ruby had, I think she was making up for lost time); trust, friendship and inner growth were at the forefront of the story. All in all, well worth the read.
