It was a routine mission, saving some more victims of the Corporations greed, but it turned into a nightmare. Now you’re alone, separated from your team, with a superior cybernetic killer hunting you down inside a building from which there’s no escape, could you survive?
The Nano Liberation, instigated by Frankie and her team at the A.C.T. freed billions from the tyranny of the Corporations rule, but the Corporations aren’t going to go down without a fight.
While the former victims of the Corporations rule start to stand up for themselves and fight back, the Corporations move to regain their power, killing these innocents and blackmailing officials.
Frankie and the A.C.T. find themselves stretched as they try to respond to every report of Corporation violence. When they head into the Undercity, into one of the huge support buildings, it seems like just another mission, until the ambush.
Outclassed and outgunned by cybernetic mercenaries hired by Psytech, Frankie finds herself separated from her strike team, trapped inside the building and disconnected from the outside world. Now she is being hunted down by Hellion and her team, an elite strike force that will stop at nothing to kill Frankie.
Now Frankie must survive in a hostile environment, find her team and somehow find a way to fight back against a bigger, superior and bloodthirsty mercenary group.
This new Cyberpunk action thriller, the third book in The New Prometheus Series, is a must read for fans of Ghost in the Shell, Blade Runner, Dredd, Appleseed, Akira, The Matrix, Robocop and Total Recall.
I'm very much enjoying the NEW PROMETHEUS books by Andrew Dobell, that are sort of the popcorn of cyberpunk. He does heavily serialized stories about the adventures of Frankie and her anti-Corporate Task Force. Frankie is sort of a British Motoko Kusanagi, except most of her powers comes from her 99% cybernetic body rather than any training on her part.
This book is a Deus Ex-esque extended action scene where Frankie and her team are chased into the underground of London (literally the former city that was built over for the new arcology) and deal with a team of murderous corporate mercenaries. Along the way they have to make a deal with a bunch of killer scavengers and organ thieves that include the ones who destroyed Frankie's body in the first place.
Frankly, no pun intended, she handles it better than they deserve. I think this is a good little book that is pretty much non-stop action from start to finish. I also enjoyed the romantic complications of Frankie and her crush as both of them deal with sorting it out. It doesn't dominate the narrative but adds an interesting new layer to it.
I thought the first book in this series was very good but I wasn’t as impressed with the last book. Unfortunately, it seemed that this one was also going to be equally disappointing. The story started to go wrong for me when the author decided Frankie should have a pathetic crush on Gibson and then it just went downhill.
Her first encounter with Hellion starts with her firing an automatic rifle at her, however even though she is a super fast cyborg and at close range, she still misses. This sets the pattern for the rest of the book, with what is basically one big battle with Frankie constantly being beaten up.
I didn’t particularly like the fight, as most of it was fairly unbelievable. Even when distracted and in the middle of a fight Hellion can see a gun being fired at her and is able to move out of the way or deflect the bullets using her sword.
Finally the author has decided Frankie needs another arch enemy so when Hellion is hit from behind by a couple of sniper rounds blowing a massive whole out of the front of her chest and she then falls out of an aircraft and smashes into the ground, is she finished? Of course not!!!!!
I nearly gave the book 1 star but I do like the way Frankie doesn’t mess around trying to talk to the bad guys, if they deserve killing she just kills them!
Another good story with Frankie and her team continuing the fight against the corporations. There are some interpersonal interactions which impact the current story and definitely appear to set in motion future interactions between the team, a potential new semi-ally, and a new enemy.
Frankie and her team are sent out but they did not know it was an ambush!! Corp hired guns have set a trap. Action packed as ever!! Can't wait for the next one!!!
I really enjoyed this series - Frankie is vibrant believable and you empathize with her problems. The action was believable - she was not invincible and her comrades were also real as was the opposition. Looking forward to the next one
I rather enjoyed this story but got a little tired of how Hellion was never taking any damage while poor Frankie was taking a beating. Looking forward to reading the next book.
Book three of the Aventures of Cyborg Frankie Gene. less focus on the ACT and the actions of the evil Corps, very much more focussed on Frankie, effectively a seige war in a towet block and rival Cyborgs (albeit these are in league with one of the corps).
I enjoyed this one quite a bit as the pace picks up and is a bit more battle based which helped a lot. Good story to go with it as well allowing for a nice piece of Frankies past to be dealt with.
