With British Snipers to the Reich

Rate this book
First published in 1948, this book is a practical guide to the sniper’s art in World War II. Captain Shore’s enthusiasm for firearms and especially for rifles led him to take every possible opportunity to try out different weapons, ammunition and methods of shooting. His interest was combined with sound common sense, and he would never countenance a rumour about a particular weapon or incident unless he was able to confirm it for himself.

As a result everything in this book is based on his personal experience. In World War II Captain Shore took part in the British landings at D-Day, and fought in Normandy and northern Europe. He came across many different weapons in varying condition, some of the worst being those used by the Dutch and Belgian resistance fighters. He was keen to learn from experienced snipers and then to train others, and he became an officer sniping instructor at the British Army of the Rhine Training Centre.

He shares a wealth of first-hand knowledge of different rifles, pistols, machine guns, ammunition, telescopes, binoculars and all the equipment a sniper should carry. This is not only an account of sniping in World War II but also a guide to all aspects of sniping based on personal knowledge and experience in training and battle. Illustrated heavily with photos, pictures and other illustrations of snipers, their weapons and their tactics.

Reminds me of real life major I know who is also a shooting aficionado

Capt Shore lives and breathes his subject. The book is full of interesting little known facts and anecdotes. It is obviously not written by a practiced writer but it is written well enough to keep the reader engaged. It should be on the reading list at Sandhurst. This is the 18 Platoon (Sidney Jary) for sniping.

Interesting and detailed

This is an interesting account and covers a lot of detail. This book is better suited to those with an interest in firearms. It covers more about the craft of sniping, the tactics and methods and the various weapon types and training than juicy war stories but found it interesting nonetheless. I think you need to have an interest in the subject to enjoy this book.

Interesting !

Hard to explain if not into shooting. This is not how to do but more of what was done. The accepted accuracy and distances are laughable now as technology has progressed massively. The stalking and observation requirements are impressive I doubt I would make the grade. Not an exciting read but informative well written and interesting!!!

I found the book interesting. I am dissatisfied with the Kindle version as the photos are minute and the description of the photos are so small you can not read them.

92% of the book was a good read. Like most books of this type to many abbreviations. Authors stop being lazy write all the words. Not TS APV "etc"

Not a great writer but a knowledgeable enthusiast

Brings a strong dose of realism to the historical record , especially regarding training and abilities of average officers and men of the time.

A good read about a rarely covered topic

A decent length book and quite entertaining and informative, especially for gun enthusiasts. More technical information about the weopons would have been nice.

The rifle the learning of a precision tool.

I was a keen rifle owner and a hunter from childhood. The author is a man who learnt his skills by diligent study and great practice. A great book.

Take my relatively high rating as a reflection of the book as a historical document, not an endorsement of the views attested in it

Written in 1948 this was not what I was expecting; very little in the way of actual sniping against the enemy, it is more a compendium and handbook on the dark arts of sniping in the British army at the end of WWII.
