As my criteria for giving a five star rating is "this book could change my life or outlook on life", I would have to say The Mystery Gut qualifies!
It's not exactly an entertaining book to read, but it is educational and provides a really well-structured and authoritative overview on how our digestive systems work, what can possibly go wrong, and how to go about fixing it. I found the sections on how gut health can impact on immune and inflamatory conditions, and those focussing on microbioata particularly useful.
Professor Kerryn Phelps is a well-respected Australian physician (and former politician) and penned this guide with her colleague, Dr. Claudia Lee. An section about nutrition, including several gut-friendly recipes, was written by dietician Jaime Rose Chambers and was a useful addition.
This is a book which is quite easy to read one chapter at a time over several weeks, as I did.
Highly recommended.

I am pretty obsessed with gut health and whenever I see a new book on the topic I always grab it. As a result, I do know quite a lot already, so I didn't learn anything new from this book. But it provides a fantastic overview for anyone new to the topic. The writing is clear and engaging and as it's written by medical professionals you know you are getting reliable information. I especially liked how open and honest the writers are about things like conflicting advice, lack of evidence, and differing opinions on the topics they cover. Overall, this is a fantastic book and a great reference for anyone suffering from gut issues who don't know where to start.

For too long it was assumed that the gut was a mere food processor in the body. But recent research in this area has revealed that the gut is actually quite a complex interface and – like the brain – it has its own nervous system. The gut also impacts our general wellbeing, immunity, mood and memory. The Mystery Gut is a well-researched and highly readable book and guide that explains our digestive system and some common conditions and issues. It also offers practical advice, recommendations and recipes to improve your gut health.

A comprehensive guide to pretty munything that can go wrong with your gut. Lots of information as a guide but if you want more specific information on your specific diagnoses condition further reading guide is attached. This book would have been awesome at the beginning of my “fix my gut” phase almost 18months ago. It’s a great starting point for a patient embarking on a diagnostic journey. Reading this book on the other side of my diagnosis and treatment it provided more of the conflict I’d seen myself in actually making a diagnosis for someone like me who was otherwise fine but had serious symptoms. A good and informative read.

It's a terrific book: comprehensive, and helpful because the information is accessible, and practical. I was disappointed that the chapter on food additives was so short. I feel the subject is more important than this. Albeit, I avoid them and feel this is the best advice. If you avoid them, then their many deleterious effects on health is not an issue. Maybe the topic warrants a separate book, putting a strong case against food additives, backed by evidence. Possibly the commercial lobby needed to be appeased.

A very informative book about various things that can happen the digestive system and what might be behind various problems (food intolerance, IBS etc). Written clearly and concisely, I feel like I've learned a lot reading it and found some new ways to look at gut issues.

But as always consult your GP before doing anything ;O)

I liked the level of scientific and medical information presented in this book - it is very readable but also appear solidly anchored in medical knowledge. Decided to put it on hold as I think I may benefit from reading Dr Phelps' earlier book, Ultimate Wellness, for a more big-picture view, before returning to this one
