This week’s Bookburners was a lot of fun!

First off, the Orb is pulsing. There’s not a current magical threat, but something is coming. And Menchú thinks he knows who is behind it all…

Meanwhile, Sal’s got a problem of her own. Her parents are visiting Rome. She tried putting them off the best she could, but they’ve boarded a plan and come to check on her and Perry. She’s got to convince them that she and Perry are utterly normal and that absolutely nothing supernatural is going on. However, that’s easier said than done.

There was a lot to love about this episode. In particular, I adored Sal’s parents visit. I could tell it would be wonderful, and it so was. They clearly love Sal, but they can’t help but do that parental thing where they pry into your life in ways you don’t always want. For instance, asking about Sal’s love life. I’m not sure there’s anything more awkward or embarrassing in the world than relatives asking you about your love life. Of course, in Sal’s case, she’s got bigger fish to fry. Her parents are both former cops and investigators, and they always know when she’s hiding something. Keeping them out of the world of the supernatural involves more work than she expected, and it never failed to be hilarious.

Hannah seems to want to steal something from the Vatican museums, but Menchú has no clue what. After all, there’s a lot of very old artifacts in the Vatican. Whatever it is she wants probably connects to her larger, mysterious plan. Oh, and Menchú still hasn’t told the rest of the team about Hannah. At this point they’re starting to get suspicious; he clearly knows something he’s not telling them.

Ashanti didn’t have much of a presence this episode (although her looking at animal videos was so adorable), but Grace does make a return. She may be trying to distance herself from Team Three, but she still obviously cares for them. I also really enjoyed getting to see more of Perry. His situation is unusual to say the least, and I like getting more insights into it.

At this point, I’m sure Hannah will be the villain of the season. Now, I’ve got to keep reading to see what she does next…

Another shorter entry in the series, and this time we're focussed in on Sal's family - not the family she's found in the job this time, but the actual family who are finally not allowing her to put them off any longer.

It was another strong installment; Perry is naturally an awkward situation just waiting to happen, as is the real nature of Sal's job. Add in a decent sprinkle of some unnerving happenings, and the resulting mixture was a nicely different glimpse into why it's better to work half a world away from the people you want to keep safe.

Thank you to the publisher and to Netgalley, for making a free copy available for review.

An enjoyable story but, once again, it felt like a filler and not a stand alone story of its own. Nice to have Sal's parents involved but I am getting a little worried about the series as a whole. Have the writers run out of ideas?
