JoAnn Becker, a wealthy socialite from Ottawa, has devoted her life to music and teaching others. She is content with her unmarried status, still living at home with her parents. That is until one of her closest friends moves west to marry the Mountie of her dreams. Once her friend is gone, she feels a bit lost and confused. When Miss Hazel approaches her with a plan to send her out West to marry a Mountie as well, she agrees, not sure at all what to expect. Kendall expects a wife just like his friend married—someone who will cook, clean, and dote on him. When JoAnn arrives, he finds that she’s nothing like he expects, but everything he needs. The two of them make beautiful music together, but he’s not certain it’s enough to sustain a relationship. Will JoAnn agree to stay in the West and marry Kendall? Or will she give in to her insecurities and flee back home to her privileged life in Ottawa?
I am surprised how much I liked this short story about JoAnn and a few other women who are "matched" to marry men in Squirrel Ridge Junction. JoAnn doesn't know a thing about work, chores, cooking, or anything else of the kind since she grew up in a house with the wealthiest family in town; however, the man she is matched to marry, Kendall, is from pretty meager means. So when they first meet they are very opposite except for one wonderful thing they have in common: a passion for music. She taught music, plays violin, piano, and guitar, and he plays guitar. Plus they both sing. Music becomes their main connection.
I love the bantering back and forth and how she's so inept at being a housewife and has to learn the simplistic things. Her BFF, Jess, who is already married and knows how to do "wifely duties" teaches her. Normally, if this were set in contemporary times, I'd be rather livid at the things Kendall expects from JoAnn. But because of the setting and era, I loved how they played into each other's hands. It's short, quick, light-hearted, and you're bound to laugh at the silliness between the two. One of my favorite examples is when she tries to make him chicken and dumplings (one of my favorite dishes when made right) he says, "I'd rather eat sand that her chicken and dumplings." JoAnn is too humorous and I love them.
Joanne was a member of Miss Hazel’s church. Miss Hazel is determined to her sons’s Mountie friends married. Joanne would be perfect for Kendall has he loves music just as much as she does. It does help Joanne’s friend Jessica is married to Miss Hazel’s son Theodore.
Kendall is happy to be getting a wife. He wants her to cook, clean and dote on him like Jessica does Theo. Joanne is a pampered woman who comes from wealth. Can these two work this out?
Lovely read about two people from different parts of life come together and have more things in common than they thought. I am enjoying this series so farad look forward to more.
The story itself is simply written, no great literary creation by any means, yet for me it exposed the repetetive, boring, dreary lifestyle millions of women were expected to endure down the ages. Joann comes from a wealthy family and has a yearning for music. She plays piano, violin and guitar and sings exceptionally well. Her parents were progressive enough to allow her to teach music, but no more than that. She travels with a group of young women to British Columbia to marry a Mountie and her life completely changes. Being married, her whole day is cooking, cleaning, washing over and over and over. I remember my mother telling me she had to leave work when she married as only unmarried women were allowed in the workplace, but I thought nothing of it when I was young. Looking at this story from contemporary times it tantamount to losing your independece. Even Kendall her new groom sums it up when he says ' I can't learn from you, you have to learn from me.'. She replied ' ...Because you have a penis. You can't learn from me because I haven't?' I never gave it serious thought before. Men made laws, women were non persons in their eyes. Joann found a decent, loving man (that is obviously the nature of this story). Imagine the millions of women who did not. I shudder.
I am truly loving this series so far. The group of authors who have compiled this series have certainly managed to bring it all together, giving it the feel of having come from the same, yet giving each book their own twist that makes them unique. In this book, we have the pleasure of experiencing just how a love can grow with only a few common interest. JoAnn is a socialite with very limited "life" skills, but she's willing to learn, especially when it means the possibility of joining up with her best friend Jess after she left the comforts of Ottawa to venture west to marry the only man she has ever loved. When Ms. Hazel commandeered her to "offer" herself as a bride for one of the mounties working with her son Theodore, she jumped at the chance. But, as she approaches her destination, doubts start to rise. Will she be enough of a "wife" for the handsome mountie/musician, Kendall. Kendall knew JoAnn was the only woman for him, almost from the moment her heard her angelic voice as she sang. But would she be able to endure the "wild west" and the life of a mounties' wife? Yet another wonderful read in this series of "mail order brides", Canadian version!
JoAnn has grown up having servants. Her parents did make her get a job, though, to be able to learn how to work, so she became a teacher. She also taught guitar, violin, and piano lessons. She especially loved the violin. When Miss Hazel matches her with a Mountie who also loves music, JoAnn thinks life couldn't be any better. Kendall is thrilled that he's been paired with another musician. He's also ready to have someone cook and clean for him. JoAnn didn't pay real good attention when Miss Hazel was trying to teach her how to clean and cook so when she makes chicken and dumplings for their dinner, it is barely edible. She wants to go back to Ottawa. Kendall isn't sure what he wants. Will these two find a way to compromise or will their marriage end in disaster?
Miss Hazel matched Joanne and Kendall because they both played musical instruments and sang, she thought this would make a good grounding for a marriage. She has made it her mission to match all the Mounties that work with her son out in the Wild West in British Columbia. She gives the girls she finds a crash course in wifely duties such as cleaning, cooking, laundry, darning and sewing. Some of the girls, such as Joanne, come from wealthy families with servants and have never done any of these chores before. Miss Hazel has her job cut out for her. I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the next in the series.
Book 1 in the Mail Order Mounties series. High society JoAnn agrees to marry a man she has never met. Barely off the train, they unite in marriage. The only thing they have in common is their music ability. Poor Joann really has her work cut out for her. Never cooked or cleaned in her life. Grew up with maids to do everything for her. Will Kendall and JoAnn learn to love each other? Really enjoyed this book and so look forward to reading all the other books in this series. You won't be disappointed!
RNWMP: BRIDE FOR KENDALL has been on my bookshelf forever and I finally got around to reading it. When I picked up this story, I was something that reminded me of Janet Oke’s Canadian West series.
Sad to report, this was not like Janet Oke’s much beloved books about Elizabeth and Wynn. Usually I complain about slow pacing, but this hopped around with no rhyme or reason. The writing is bad, and characters lack original voice and development. The miscommunication trope ran rampant. I guess if I need a Mountie love story- I’ll look into fanfiction 😉
Kendall Jameson needs a wife. Joann Becker needs music and her best friends. Too bad Jessica moved across the country to marry a Mountie. What's a girl to do but allow herself to leave a life of luxury to find her own Mountie. This story is about one of the most important things in a relationship: finding the way to your man's heart, even when you cannot cook!
I love the beginning.Hazel going to church to find 4 mail order brides, and hope she wasn’t sinning. God wanted the men to be happy, so it couldn’t be. Everyone knew what Hazel wants, she gets. Simple in two weeks she would teach them how to cook, make bread a simple fare. What about the instructions of five women together when the Montie’s are gone overnight or loner. Delightful story, as all of hers are.
This story came with a clean and wholesome tag. It's not! I was about half way through and was reading through an argument between the husband and wife when the wife, who is touted as a well-bred woman, used the word for the male private parts. No shock on her husband's part either. Not only would a well-bred woman in this time period not use that word ever, but a clean and wholesome novel should never use that word either!
This series is set in the early 1900's in British Columbia with a group of Mounties in a small town. This is the second story in the series and it was as much fun as the first. This time we have Jo Ann who was Jess'friend back in Ottawa. And Kendall who is a Mountie with Theodore. This story sticks to typical ups and downs of a new relationship without adding fake drama. I really enjoyed it!
This is such a cute book! I enjoyed each and every part. It was a sweet romance about a mail order bride and how hard it would be to adjust in an area without electricity and very few supplies and lots of forestry. I can just imagine Monty running around in the back yard! This has many great characters. I loved it! Recommended for anyone.
This story lacked substance, the characters were flat, the POV was inconsistent, and the backstory was practically non-existent. I realize this is harsh, however, I had to work hard to keep reading out of frustration. I was determined to see it to the end in hope the writing would improve. Unfortunately, that didn't happen.
JoAnn heads to the country to marry Kendall. They hit if off but she's not ready to run a house since she can't cook or clean. While she tries to be perfect he doesn't realize she's working hard to please him so he'll love her.
This is a simple clean romance. No big problems and no sex.
This is such a sweet mails order bride story. I loved it. Brought together by Ms. Hazel, JoAnn and Kendall have a mutual love of music but will that be enough? Can't wait to read the next.
Was an great book. JoAnn moved to where Jess was to marry a Mountie, she couldn't cook nothing but pancakes. It was so funny how she would call the moose Mickey moose or a bear bob
These two would have had a much easier beginning if they could have just talked to each other! Instead they're both trying to win the other over with actions. I'm enjoying these complicated relationships and I look forward to the next book!
Funny, loving and kind. When one has to adapt to new environments everything can go wrong or very right. This goes right. Straight to the heart of readers. Love is not perfection but an action.
Full of Kirsten's patented sense of humor! I love her irreverent "older lady" characters. Miss Hazel reminds me a bit of Edna Petunia from the Suitors of Seattle and Orlan Orphans series'. And of course, this is where we first meet Monty the Moose!
Can’t say that I loved this book. I trudged through to the end because I simply had to finish what I started. Luckily it wasn’t a very long story. The writing style just wasn’t my favorite, and the plot was a bit formulaic. It was a clean read though.
Thought this was an excellent read. The author tells a really good love story, that is clean. I very much appreciate the way she tells the stories they're intriguing they keep my interest I really like them.
I really enjoyed reading this book and enjoying all the beauty of Canada! I am so excited to find this new series about Mounties with 27 books in the series. You will enjoy it I'm very sure!
And a whole passel of them! Kendall and Joann are two of a kind when it comes to music and not communicating! Good thing they have friends who give good advice.
This was such a great story. I love how realistic it was, in that communication is the key to a great marriage. JoAnn and Kendall were terrific characters.
