Lucky Strike McAllister isn't very lucky. In fact, he isn't much of anything most days, to hear his MC tell it. Since the death of his father from cancer and the suicide of his pops, he's done nothing but find ways to get into trouble. He's talented with an airbrush gun and an amazing artist when he sets his mind to it, but more often than not, the things Lucky sets his mind to are pretty self-destructive. When Thorn and his partner Cain, are forced to fish Lucky out of the ocean on a chilly fall night, both men decide he needs a keeper and who better than them to keep Lucky from destroying himself. Too bad Lucky can't see that they're trying to help. Bitter and lashing out, he does everything he can to sabotage the only chance he's ever been giving at truly belonging to someone. Will Lucky be able to put aside his anger long enough to get to know the two men who have taken such an intense interest in him, or will he run from them, his club and everything he's ever known, and burn the last of his luck in the process?
LAYLA DORINE lives among the sprawling prairies of Midwestern America, in a house with more cats than people. She loves hiking, fishing, swimming, martial arts, camping out, photography, cooking, and dabbling with several artistic mediums. In addition, she loves to travel and visit museums, historic, and haunted places.
Layla got hooked on writing as a child, starting with poetry and then branching out, and she hasn’t stopped writing since. Hard times, troubled times, the lives of her characters are never easy, but then what life is? The story is in the struggle, the journey, the triumphs and the falls. She writes about artists, musicians, loners, drifters, dreamers, hippies, bikers, truckers, hunters and all the other folks that she’s met and fallen in love with over the years. Sometimes she writes urban romance and sometimes its aliens crash landing near a roadside bar. When she isn’t writing, or wandering somewhere outdoors, she can often be found curled up with a good book and a kitty on her lap.
HOLY SHIT! DNF and return for refund at around 50% because:
- Lucky is attacked by THREE guys with their hands and feet as well as a bat, and he has NO marks on his hands/arms/legs?!?!? I repeat: NO MARKS????? He's not limping or in PAIN, making it possible for Cain and Thorn to spot his injuries immediately?!? Yeeeaaaahhhh naaaaah, that's not gonna fly.
- As I understand it a GOOD Dom LISTENS and tries to understand their (potential) Sub. They do NOT ignore EVERY report on said Sub, and decide that they know EVERYTHING better than everyone else, BEFORE getting to know the Sub.
- I can SMELL the miscommunication-plot from here, and I am half a world away. For FUCKS sake, WHYYYYYYYYYY Also: why does Lucky decide to keep the attack secret and deal with the bad guys himself???
- At one point there was this weird incestuous feeling when Mark was in the room, watching and masturbating when they were doing a scene. Mark, the father of Cody -Lucky's best friend- as well as a 'guide' when Lucky is alone.... It felt creepy, since Mark read like a father figure at times.
- And lastly I do not find it credible that Lucky wants to get down with his bad self with Thorn, since Thorn is a FUCKING douchebag....
Miscommunication trope can get me all wound up, but it is all worth it in the end. There are so many aspects of Lucky I can relate to, like his inability to express his feelings and desires, which makes this all the more interesting read for me. There are some spelling and grammatical errors, but not enough to detract from the rating.
I don't generally like MC books, but I liked the premise of this and took a chance. I'm glad I did.
Lucky's father is dying, so to escape, he spends a lot of time at the club's Dungeon. He's a natural sub, but is afraid to commit to a Dom. One night, he gets in over his head and needs to be rescued by the club president, Mark. With his permission, Mark sets up a scene with Cain and Thorn, and they become a regular thing at the club.
When Luckys father dies and his other one commits suicide, he feels lost and quickly loses control. Cain and Thorn have wanted to take their relationship to the next step, and here's their chance. They take him home with them for a change of scenery and try to help him. Unfortunately, they make the mistake of not confessing who they are, and it takes a while for Lucky to warm up to Thorn because of it.
Eventually, something happens with Lucky to make Thorn realize his mistakes, and he makes the effort to change is ways. This leads to a nice HEA, but not before some MC business almost takes away that chance.
Other than some editing issues I hope are resolved, I ended up liking this a lot more than I thought I would. I like that although Thorn made some mistakes, both he and Cain let things move at Lucky's pace. Most MC books I've read had the members heavily into illegal activities, and I like that Joker's Wild was trying to distance themselves from that type of stuff. Between the relationship stuff and the MC business, there was just enough drama and angst that it didn't overtake the story or feel overwhelming.
This was such an emotional rollercoaster, I loved watching Lucky’s development through his hardships and troubling times. You could really feel how bad he was hurting after the loss of his parents and how even though he had so many people around him, he still felt alone. Thorn and Cain’s relationship was really nice to watch and how they cared for Lucky really warmed my heart. I really liked how close knit all the club was together and how they worked through things with Lucky in order to help him. Definitely recommend.
Literally from start to finish. You want an emotion filled, hold your breath, unpredictable yet fantastic book? Look no further. I cannot recommend this book enough.
The story has a decent plot, but is in serious need of editing and updating. (Who uses the Yellow Pages anymore?) I also prefer my kink to happen on page and not be glossed over. Points for actually talking about issues in the relationship between characters. But this book could have been SO much better with some quality editing. Medium angst. TW for minor character suicide and major character attempt and depression. Kinks: bondage, blindfolds, plug, wax play mentioned as an after the fact.
Lucky is wandering aimlessly after the death of his father and the suicide of his dad. He feels guilty and is too afraid and stubborn to ask for help. Even the members of his MC, his other family, are not able to get through to him. The only two men who show their interest are Thorn and Cain. They are an established couple of fifteen years but they see Lucky as their missing part. I loved this story. I was engrossed in the story right from the start. It is well-written, steady-paced and flowing. Layla created rather complicated characters in all three men. Lucky and Thorn are so much alike that they have the biggest problem connecting with each other. Cain is more the peacemaker and is the first to calm down Lucky and give him with he needs even before Lucky realizes himself. Their journey towards each other is slow but steady. Each of the men has their own demons to fight. They have to swallow their pride, let go of the past, admit their mistakes and let the others in. It is a very emotional story that had me tearing up many times. But it is also funny and most of all full of hope. For me, the success of ménage stories depends on the writer’s ability to create a realistic and believable relationship between three men, especially when two of them are already a couple. Layla succeeded beautifully. I never had the feeling that one of the guys was left out of the equation. They complement each other in every way despite or maybe because of their different personalities. This is not your regular BDSM novel for two reasons. There are not much actual sex scenes but that doesn’t mean that there is no heat. On the contrary, the chemistry is palpable and sparks are flying. There is always an underlying sexual tension with smoldering glances and furtive touches. Furthermore, this is not a story to ‘learn’ about BDSM. I think it is enjoyed more if the reader has a certain knowledge of the genre.
Lucky is a mess. He's a submissive without a Dom. He has been brought up in a motorcycle club, but with his parents on the edges of that club and in failing health, Lucky is spiraling out of control. He goes off the deep end when one of his fathers die of a disease and his other dad takes his own life. Thorn and Cain are a couple who have spent time with Lucky and want him in their bed, but going about letting him know that in such a roundabout way might be what loses him forever.
I liked the concept of this. This was more a 3.5 for me because while this was supposed to be a BDSM title, it was a very light one on top of the fact that the menage was a poorly configured one because of the lack of communication. Lucky was very dramatic in all the ways he showed he needed help. I loved his interactions with Cain, but with Thorn and Lucky it was just so stressed and filled with tension that it was hard to like them as couple together. Getting all three of them together was a long, awkward, and drawn out process. I wish the development of their relationship as a Dom/switch/sub worked more fluidly. Most of this I felt was very Dom/switch (Thorn/Cain). It had a lot of good points and a good story, but I think my critical analysis of M/M romance menage bdsm titles makes it hard to for me to really love a story if it isn't thoroughly written and put together well. It's hard enough for one (bdsm or long term menage), but doing both is really difficult if the writing isn't strong enough to create strong characters and stories together not just individually.
I probably would have given this another star if it had been better proof-read/edited. There were some glaringly obvious typos and words that I wasn’t sure were used in the right context. That, aside, this was really a gem of a book.
Lucky is a broken young man, who, after a double tragedy, goes on a mission to self-destruct and push away everyone else he has left. This includes Mark, the president of the MC pack/gang he (and his father’s) belong to. Enter Thorne and Cain, who take a liking to to Lucky, at one of Mark’s clubs. After Lucky’s behaviour and attitude deteriorate to the point that he’s being arrested, getting into several fights, and allegedly, sleeping around – they decide to step in when they discover he’s taken an impromptu dip into the big blue sea. With Mark’s agreement they pack Lucky off to their own chapter of the MC (although you don’t really see much of the bike side of things), move him in and offer him a job, despite his angry, little bunny attitude and his refusal to acknowledge Thorne as his superior.
So, it’s a poly affair of sorts but the kink stuff is few and far between, and as someone who works in MH, I enjoyed this rather for the obvious transference Lucky is pushing on to everyone – Mark and Thorne being prime examples.
Throw in an angry. little. bunny, a brat routine, and MC men in leathers (and a little bdsm) and I’m all in.
There's something about miscommunications that just does it for me, it gives such a good angsty plot some times, and with it so much feels with Lucky because he is filled with anguish. He had me tearing up a good few times against my own will. And I wish it had been enough for me, but there is so much inconsistencies that it takes away from what could be a very good story. Not too mushy, not too over the top.
The pov keeps changing without any warning and it's between four different people. Injuries that shows less severe than should be possible. Change of positions that makes no sense because it's not stated that the char even moved in the first place. It's not big things and I overlooked things because I liked what I was reading, but in the end it adds up and it becomes distracting.
Be ready for an emotional roller-coaster of a ride with this one for sure. Lucky is having the worst year of his life and when his MC president sends him away he cant help but fall another rejection added to the pile that is his life. Thorn & Cain having met Lucky prior to his serial want to get to to know him more. Lets be blunt Thorn doesnt handle the situation well and makes many mistakes and if it weren't for Cain I don't think this group could have come together in the end. Cain can see yhe real Lucky and keeps encouraging him to let his demons go. What takes rock bottom for these three men to find there peace is a ride for sure but a worthwhile ride at that. An overall engaging read that ensnares you from the moment you see the three together for every hard fought step along the way to their HEA.
ROLLIN' JOKERS Book #1 sets the pace. Rollin' Jokers is a motorcycle gang. LAYLA DORINE has written tough guys you can't help but fall for. Lucky is a young man who is devastated by loss. The club are the only family he has. Deciding to take his pain out in all the wrong ways. Thorn a strict Dom and his switch Cain are determined to save Lucky from himself. This is a angst driven story. It's so well written that you see why these clubs are so tight. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK AND THIS ROLLIN' JOKERS SERIES!!!!!!!!!!
I liked reading this story but... I wasn't feeling the chemistry between the Mc's though Caine and Lucky yes but Thorn hmm not so much, especially since Thorne only gets the stick outta his ass at 79% . I always try to read ménage stories but I just don't get why an established couple needs/wants a third person in the first place . I keep trying though for the one story that will make me think that it's possible to have an lasting and equel relationship between 3 people .
I loved the dynamic between Thorne, Cain and Lucky. To watch their relationship grow, the push and pull I thought was executed really well. I enjoyed the concept of the story, I’ve never read any MC books before. I liked how both Thorne and Lucky had dimension to their character, that it wasn’t all just about the physical aspect of the relationship. The only reason this is not a 5⭐️ read is that I felt the end was a little rushed. But really enjoyed this book!
I loved the story. I was looking for more spice but man I couldn't beat the story. Before I knew it I was done with the book. It's a good read. The passage of time was well done as well as the emotions. I feel like this caught grief very well, as someone who recently went through losing a dad as well, it was very poignant to read Luckys struggle with anger and grief.
My gods, this dragged at first. To the extent I gave up on it a couple of times. The story picked up, but as it did, the number of wrong words and typos became overwhelming. I couldn’t seem to read a paragraph without an error, to the point I wonder if the wrong file got uploaded.
This is advertised as the story of Lucky and how he falls for Thorn and Cain but in my opinion, best part of this story was Thorn and Cain fighting to getting Lucky to accept their love. They never gave up on him even when they wanted to or when he arguably deserved it and I think that's beautiful.
The sex was hot, your kindle might smoke, be warned. It was also caring and more meaningful than just sex. The emotions that they were able to experience during sex are what convinced them that they would be able to make a real relationship work in the first place. So if you believe in the transformative power of sex, you'll love this book.
I also really liked the side plot of the wreck diving, I thought it was a really interesting, non standard get rich quick scheme that normal book villains would never think of.
So read this one for hot sex, a caring d/s relationship and all that delicious angst.
Yeah I don’t know. It just wasn’t for me. It wasn’t bad just not that great. I’ve read better sex. I was glad when she skipped some of the sex and just said they had it.
When I met this author at GRL and she was telling me that she had a ménage story that wasn’t paranormal or fantasy my curiosity was peaked and I knew I had to have this.
Lucky has grown up in the Rolling Jokers Motorcycle Club. His “Old Man” dad been one of the founding five and his “Pops” had been a childhood friend of the president Mark. But with his old man succumbing to the ravish of cancer and his pops not holding it together he sought out relief in the only way he could…at the dungeon of his MC club. With Mark looking out for the boy and knowing what he needed he was blindfolded with ear plugs before he was put with two men who could safely give him what he needed. Thorn and Cain enjoyed their time with the boy and wanted to move it further but Mark held them off. Lucky wasn’t ready for a more permanent change in his life after his old man’s death. When his pops did the unspeakable Lucky was left spinning out of control. Now Thorn and Cain are left to pick up the pieces but how is that even possible when he doesn’t even know he knows them?
There were several points in this story when I just wanted to throttle all the older men in Lucky’s life. They were suppose to be looking out for his best interest but both Thorn and Mark really pissed me off! First Mark…I know he was fluster with how Lucky was off the rails and self destructing but that was expected. He’s young and his whole life is shattered. He has a connection to two guys he has never seen but they are only around once and awhile and then seemed to disappear completely. Now, if Lucky had stopped trying to look like he had everything together and didn’t need the help of his MC family thing could have gone much better also. But being twenty one also doesn’t give you much time to know how to act. And Thorn, don’t get me started with that bullheaded Dom! He should have known better and when things kept going from bad to worse he damn well should have listened to Cain and Mark about coming clean with Lucky on who they really were!
Although this book does have sex, duh it starts out in a dungeon, that is not the true basis of this story although it is hot as hell. This is the story of how Thorn, Cain and Lucky learn together to trust one another and learn from the mistakes that have been made. I will say that the author about gave me a coronary the day after Christmas. You make these poor guys go through hell to finally really get together and trust each other and then that was the cherry on top of the sundae??? Grrrr! What I did love was that Cain knew, right from the start, what was best for the young man and stood strong for him. I know that Lucky frustrated them with his actions but Cain also knew that you had to give to expect the trust and submission that they all desired. I think that Cain was my most favorite of these three. Yes, of course, I loved Lucky and I even grew to love Thorn when he finally figured out what he almost lost. All I wanted was for Lucky to finally get what he was searching for and needed…total and complete love and acceptance.
I would have never guessed that I would have fallen for a MC book but this one was so much more than that. I was thankful that it wasn’t all brutal and gory. This was a book about needs and how to help a young man with all he has had to live through. It was the story of an established couple that realized that they needed the love of a third to make themselves complete. It was the story of growth, love and relationship, of a young man not knowing what he needed and a more experienced couple learning what they also needed. I highly recommend this this wonderful book. I gave this 4.5 Hearts because Thorn took way too long to get his head out of his butt and be the Dom he was supposed to already be…all at Lucky and Cain’s expense. Yeah, this is all on you Thorn!
