Knowing the Bible

1–2 Timothy and Titus: A 12-Week Study

Rate this book

The Knowing the Bible series is a resource designed to help Bible readers better understand and apply God’s Word. These 12-week studies lead participants through books of the Bible and are made up of four basic components: (1) reflection questions that help readers engage the text at a deeper level; (2) “Gospel Glimpses” that highlight the gospel of grace throughout the book; (3) “Whole-Bible Connections” that show how any given passage connects to the Bible’s overarching story of redemption, culminating in Christ; and (4) “Theological Soundings” that identify how historic orthodox doctrines are taught or reinforced throughout Scripture. With contributions from an array of influential pastors and church leaders, these gospel-centered studies will help Christians see and cherish the message of God’s grace on every page of the Bible.

The letters to Timothy and Titus are among Paul's most personal and practical epistles. The apostle writes to instruct these younger men in the importance of sound doctrine and to urge them to rebuke false teaching. This accessible study shows how Paul's letters exhort all Christians to protect and pass on the true gospel of Jesus Christ, which has the power to save and transform sinners.

I wish I could say that this is an awesome study, but unfortunately the best I can say is “this is the best study I could find,” which is too bad. Don’t get me wrong, it was good enough to piggy back off of in a group setting. I had to do a lot of independent research to answer questions and fill in gaps, which also, is fine.

Pros:
The study is fairly thorough, offering historical context and theological discussions.

Cons:
The author clearly uses the ESV study Bible in writing the questions, and often the author will write a question where the answer is in the ESV study Bible, but the question is written such that, unless you already know the answer, how in the world is a person supposed to get their on their own?

Many of the questions are leading questions, which a huge preface & then pose a question that the author seemed to already answer in the leading question

The author often skipped over a verse or set of verses entirely, either because he deemed them unnecessary, or maybe because he didn’t want to or know how to deal with them, specifically sections in 1 Timothy 2

This book is part of the series “Knowing The Bible”. Was thought provoking and we did enjoy bible study. However, we did find some of the questions confusing.
