From New York Times bestselling author Cinda Williams Chima comes the third gripping adventure in the Shattered Realms series, where intricately interwoven storylines converge as the warring Seven Realms struggle to unite against a horrific tyrant.

Vagabond seafarer Evan Strangward can move wind, waves, and weather, but his magical abilities can’t protect him forever from the brutal Empress Celestine. As Celestine’s relentless bloodsworn armies grow, Evan travels to the Fells to warn the queendom that an invasion is imminent.

If he can’t convince the Gray Wolf queen to take a stand, he knows that the Seven Realms will fall, and his last sanctuary will be destroyed. Among the dead will be the one person Evan can’t stand to lose.

Meanwhile, the queen’s formidable daughter, Princess Alyssa ana’Raisa, is already a prisoner aboard the empress’s ship, sailing east. Lyss may be the last remaining hope of bringing down the empress from within her own tightly controlled stronghold.

Holy crap on a cracker!!! I loved it!

I loved the hell out of this book!! I meant to re read the first two but wasn't able to but I'm hoping to re/read all three. I hope the last book knocks the series out of the ballpark!

These characters are awesome! Actually, I think I might need to re/read the 4 books in the beginning of this world and then start these again! Who knows! I'm just happy with this book for now!

Happy Reading!

description

When I first read Flamecaster, I told myself be careful what you wish for.

This Shattered Realms series is set 25 years after The Seven Realms series, which is one of my all time favorite YA fantasy series. Because that is the case, the character shift to Han and Raisa’s children being the main characters meant they are not safe. Some of the characters I love from the first series are going to die and that was also why thirty pages into Flamecaster I was in tears sobbing and didn’t think I’d continue the book. Stormcaster made me glad I continued because after I wiped away all my tears I had a theory, a dream, a hope for my beloved character who was gone and I WAS RIGHT!!! and it made everything so much better for me.

Stormcaster is much like Flamecaster and Shadowcaster, in that we spend the first 30% of the book with a new character getting their backstory and bringing us up to present time. Evan was the envoy that came to Ardenscourt for Jenna in Flamecaster. His origin story was so interesting I didn’t care that it took us a third of the book to get back to where we left off at the end of Shadowcaster. Evan and Destin’s history was fleshed out and I will say it was different than I expected but wonderful. I was happy to find out he wasn’t exactly what we thought he was.
You are in deep water, Pirate, and you’ve forgotten how to swim. Do not fall for this dangerous, moody, mercurial boy. It will lead to heartbreak or worse.

We have a few different story lines happening; Adrian is with Lila headed back to his homeland and to see his mother *insert tears here*. Alyssa is captured with Breon and headed to wherever the Empress lives. Hal is on his way to his father to try to gather an army to look for Alyssa. Destin is in Ardenscourt hoping to stop a civil war. Lila is actually in all of the places because that girl is badass and totally gets around. Jenna is with her Dragon Cas and they are having their own adventure, let’s just mention here how awesome Cas is.

The thing I love about this world is that the women in it are so strong. It is one of the few stories I’ve read that has a Queendom instead of a Kingdom. The head of the Army is a woman, one of the top spies is a girl and another girl is a tamer of dragons and has hatched a dangerous plan of her own. Never is it said the girls should be bundled up, stowed away safely, knitting. They are all out there making differences and being strong in so many ways.

Stormcaster is where I think a lot of the story is getting traction. There are some bigger movements on what the Magemarked are and why the Empress is after them. I especially enjoyed learning more about the bloodsworn and trying to develop a theory about what those crazy blood drinking priests might be. Adrian’s reunion with his mother opens back up the political intrigues which lead to Han’s assassination and the attempt on Alyssa. I loved getting page time with Raisa. I’ve missed her so much since she is not the star of the series. But again she is the wonderful character I loved so much in the Seven Realms series.
“You smell of the road— sweat and horses and leather, meadowsweet and pine.” She put up a hand when he tried to apologize. “No. I like it. My father was a clan trader, and he always came home smelling like faraway places. It reminds me of something your father said once.” She closed her eyes, remembering. “He said, ‘I want to breathe you in for the rest of my life.’”

It is fantastic to be back in this world and while you might have shied away from it if you read the Seven Realms series, I think fans will be especially excited about a few of the developments in this series in regards to characters from the original series.

Warning – This contains a developing relationship between a same sex couple. While there is no sex, there is a kiss. I don’t say this to discourage anyone from reading it but as a parent I liked knowing those things going in so I could answer questions my kids might have had. I hope this doesn’t dissuade anyone from reading.

Audio Note: As always, this is well performed and the narration of the all the characters is done well.

Reading this now was ill advised. Now there’s the dreaded year-long wait for the finale and I’m still no closer to answers than I was in book one.

This was amazing! I’ve been waiting for Evan Strangward story since Shadowcaster and CWC did NOT disappoint.

I don’t know how everything will be wrapped up in the next book since there are loose ends literally at every turn but I sure am excited to find out.

This book was exactly what I’d waited for, it did not disappoint. I love this series, this world, these characters. My god, there were so many bomb shells that I’m still sort of reacting to.

I’m just a sucker for it all, all the moving pieces and the way the storylines weave together and the endless strategy of it. C.W. Chima never fails to surprise me at every turn. These are the kind of novels you have to set aside time to give your full attention to, that possess you with a need to know what happens next. And then leave you floundering in wait for the next one. I’ll never be able to fathom why these books aren’t more widely read. Go read them, don’t let me spoil you.

Stormcaster was one thing after the other. And, just like the last two books, we’ve got way more pieces of the puzzle to sort through this time. We met Evan back in Flamecaster, but weren’t exactly very endeared to him. Now, with his entire past on the table, he’s one of the family. And having his and Destin’s background made me need to peak back through Flamecaster and wonder how I could’ve missed it. I love Destin Karn and Evan Strangeward. They broke my heart. That seems to be a running theme for the pairings in these books.

Things really started to come together in this third novel. We finally got a glimpse at what might really be going on Carthis, and it’s not looking good to say the least. Plus, characters have started meeting up, even filling each other in on all the endless plotting. I loved it. But the next book’s reunions are going to be dazzling.

All my lovelies better get their happy endings, and I’m really looking forward to certain folks getting what’s coming to them.

Well, it's safe to say Cinda Williams Chima knows how to build a story book by book, with each one out performing the previous installment. I already knew this of course. Having read both of her previous series', but it needs to be said for all the readers out there that have not had the pleasure of reading any of her stories. In Stormcaster, the character development and world building are mostly complete. We do get a couple of the characters backstory at the beginning, but other than that the characters and plot take center stage.

There is really no down time in this book. The story glides through each of the eight POV's with steady precision. There is a lot going on, but it never got confusing or felt diluted by so many storylines. I could literally go a day without reading and pickup right were I left off without feeling lost. I truly enjoyed each characters chapters, because they all have a vital role to play in the overall outcome.

Stormcaster set the tone for the final book in this series. My emotions were literally up and down throughout the story. A joyous moment would be followed by a disastrous event, or a long awaited reunion would be accompanied by devastating news. I have a bad feeling all of my favorites aren't going to make it out alive. The last section of the book had me on pins and needles. Instead of just one cliffhanger, this book ended with several in the final chapters. I'm so glad the final book in this series was just released. I would have gone crazy having to wait months on its release.

While I don't read very much YA these days, the Shattered Realms series has helped remind me why I fell in love with reading to begin with. To be emotionally invested in a book and it's characters is a wondrous thing, and Mrs. Chima has always been able to captivate me with her stories. I have been a faithful fan for many years, and this series has only solidified that bond between author and reader that so few in this world truly understand.

Actual rating: Yes, that’s 5/5 stars!!
All the stars I can throw in there!! 😍😍

Wow... It’s been a while since I’ve read a book that I honestly could NOT put down!! But of course, it had to be Cinda Williams Chima’s world that enchanted and wrapped me up completely in the characters and their intertwining stories! Because, wow...

Plot: This book has our storm creating pirate on the cover (Evan Strangward 😍), but it’s about all the characters as they struggle to figure out how the fractured Seven Realms can unite and face the threat of the Empress - and I LOVE how they’re now all driving the same overall plotline!
This series always has the best political intrigue with a great ever surprising magic system!

Characters: I love them - wonderful, complex and distinctive characters! And they’re all in this one! We have the pirate mage, the poisoner/healer, the soldier (so happy that Hal was in this a lot), the dragon rider, the spy (Destin, I liked him from book one, and I’m not disappointed now that we see more 😍), the princess, the magical musician, the smuggler!
But I wish there was more of Breon. He’s just so adorable and funny, and I love his POV.

Romance: I loved the bits and start of romance! I ship all the couples in this series so hard, and the one introduced in this one I knew was there since the first book! 😁👍🏼 (Would it be a spoiler to mention who they are? 🤔)
I did wish that there was a bit more romance overall for the characters, but I guess that’s because we’re nearing the end, the plot is getting more intense and putting everyone where they need to be — (but I need those reunions to happen for all the ships, before the actual ending of the series, please! 😁)

And fans of the first series, The Seven Realms - I think you’ll like this installment too! 😉

The ending makes me know the next book will be EPIC, and judging by the final book of the first series, I have no doubts!!

Shattered Realms - Trailer

"We need to ask forgiveness, not permission!"

Actually rating 3.5 stars

This was a hard book to rate, compared to the first two books, Stormcaster was a let down to me. This book suffered from the middle syndrome, not much had happened , I felt more that this book is a preparation to the final book in the series. Regardless there were a few things I disliked so I will put the things I loved or disliked but be aware ....

...may contain spoilers!

Loved:
- that Ash made an appearance ( well it was more a 5-6 chapters from his POV) and I loved every scene with hm

- loved that there were many POVs
- liked that we meet Hal's family and also the problems in Ardenscourt
- Jenna & Lyss meet and spoke of Ash
- the appearance of Han
- the mystery regardless the traitor or traitors from the Fells
- we find more about the empress and Carthys

Disliked:
- Evan bored me to death and this was a let down because I was expecting to like him
- there were too many new characters
- I wanted more of Breon , that guy is so funny!
- that Ash & Jenna did not meet
- the LGBT thing ,it is like the authors try to force you to LGBT even if the book is not in that genre, honestly I did not saw this coming ( not to be judgmental but if you want to write about LGBT at least put the book in the right genre)
- instead I felt like Destin & Lila had a more romantic potential from the last book so I disliked that the author choose instead to make Destin gay!
- some scenes were so boring that I skipped some pages
- action scenes were so few

This was definitely better then Shadowcaster for me. Not that Shadowcaster was bad it was just missing elements that I love about CWC's books. I kind of love how each of these books takes us into the lives of characters before the start of Flamecaster and kind of directs us on how they got from point A to point B. In this we followed Evan who is an orphan who was raised by Pirates until he finds out that he is so much more then that. I will leave it at that since this is the third book in the Shattered Realms series. CWC writes so fluidly from page to page. She finds ways to make all the characters come together through magnificent storytelling. The one thing that makes this series stand out for me is that it is more political action then anything. And because CWC writes so effortlessly the plot never drags on. I don't know how this is all going to wrap up in just one more book but I am excited to see what is in store for the finale! Too bad I have to wait a year!

Well. I read this. And it's not just a bridge book, but a boring bridge book.

(I actually thought this would be the third book of a trilogy; when I got to chapter 40 or so, and there weren't enough pages left for a resolution, judging by the book's glacial pace - well. I was not happy.)

I can't work up the energy for a rant because I simply don't care anymore. I already ranted about how this series wrecks the worldbuilding of the previous series; at this point, I don't think it's even in line with the first book of this series. New magic is introduced just to further story - old characters are diluted and new characters are interchangeable - everyone is wary and distrusting and wry and operating all by their lonesome - they've from all over, but they're all exactly the same and so are their motives, and they all seem to working toward the same (unspecified!) goal - they move between places with ease but little eye toward a coherent timeline - and they're always one or two degrees of separation away from each other, a distance that's been present the entire series and is really, really getting on my nerves. I GET IT. YOU DON'T KNOW EACH OTHER, YOU DON'T TRUST EACH OTHER, THERE ARE TOO MANY OF YOU AND NONE OF YOU INTERSECT EXCEPT IN TEDIOUS, POINTLESS WAYS.

And it's so sloppy. There are two different Bosleys: one's a horse, one's a person. WHY? A character realizes, in the middle of a meeting, that the meeting itself is significant because it's a treasonous act; you couldn't realize that, oh, two days before instead of smack-dab in the middle, where it has no place? A character finds out that someone isn't dead, but then almost passes out when hearing about a poison attempt. Isn't that reaction a little delayed?

None of this matters. It's pointless and petty. Its glacial pacing means that nothing feels urgent - even though there are, like, seven different wars going on - and everyone seems to have all the time in the world to connive. Separately.

So I'm done. Definitely with the series - I just don't care anymore - and probably with the author. You'd never think that seven books (two series!) could be an aberration.

No spoilers in this rapid review of Stormcaster. I really enjoyed it and give it 4.25 stars. Chima’s books have it all: intriguing characters, a unique magical system, and great worldbuilding. My love for this world grows with each installment, just as it did in Seven Realms, Chima’s original series in this setting.

Stormcaster opens in the past to tell Evan Strangward’s backstory beginning at age thirteen. Many incidents and people in his younger years are pertinent to current events in the Realms. Evan’s story eventually catches up to the present, and we finally check in with the other characters from the first two books. Here is what everyone is up to when we first catch up with them:

*Ash finally arrives home to a disbelieving but warm reception, and he’s quickly thrust into wartime politics.
*Hal makes it home but then follows his brother to Ardenscourt to attempt rescue his mother and sister.
*Destin is also in Ardenscourt, hoping to quietly right the wrongs of his current ruler as well as his former one.
*Lyss and Breon are still Celestine’s captives, but the plans she has for them are surprising.
*Jenna and Cas are still traveling together, trying to gather enough clues to defeat Celestine, find Ash, or (hopefully) both.

As you can tell, Chima is weaving together many different threads in Stormcaster. This was the penultimate book in the series, so by the end we have a decent idea of whose plans are falling into place, which characters are or will soon be in the same locale, and what the final battle(s) might look like. She also gives us a nice surprise, one that will especially delight her long-time readers.

With a cast of characters this large, I always end up picking favorites. But it’s harder than normal with this group. Each character is distinct and well fleshed-out. Honestly, I like them all, but I have special place in my heart for Ash. I consider him the main main character, and I’m excited each time the chapter is from his point of view. And I give Breon an honorable mention. He’s a bit of a side character, but there’s something I’ve liked about him from the first time he was introduced. It’s the combination of his spunk, self-deprication, and goofiness.

I definitely recommend this book! I enjoyed it from cover to cover. The climax had some game-changing moments, and I can’t wait to see what Chima has planned for the finale. If it’s anything like book four in her Seven Realms series, it’s sure to be action-packed and certain to be a fitting end to a great series.

This was my favorite book in the Shattered Realms sequel series to the seven realms series so far, my favorite series of all time.

If I have one criticism of it it's that it's too short, or maybe too much is happening in it considering the length—there are so many intricate and intertwining storylines to keep track of that sometimes I got confused. Rather than having two main characters and occasionally diverging like in the main series, this sequel series has constantly switched viewpoints to the point where there's an ensemble cast. And perhaps there are too many romances for me to care about, too. There seem to be a lot of beta couples forming and I feel like the next and last book might rush to flesh them out.

That being said, everybody's story manages to be interesting and it was really hard to put the book down because I needed to know what happened next.

Oh, and the first 100 or so pages of this book were Really Gay. I could've had a whole book of that shit. Gay Things really are better!

I just wish this book was twice as long so I got a better feeling for the big picture rather than switching between a ton of different perspectives in a small amount of time.

Oh my...I'm seriously getting a hangover from this one...

The first earlier chapters begin a couple of years before the even in Flamecaster happen first then slowly it's continue where the last part happen in the previous book left. I really recommend to a new reader who wants to read this series it would be better if you do a binge read. Trust me it would be awsome.

The storyline are getting far more complicate and there's a lot of surprise elements keep popping out of no where...

I really can't wait for the next installment next year.

I am lost for words, at just how incredible this book was. It’s far and away my favorite of the Shattered Realms, probably the best book Cinda’s written since The Crimson Crown. Two books of setup (plus half of this one) begin paying off in the most glorious ways as the arc of this series comes into clearer focus.

To say this series is ambitious is an understatement. Stormcasters adds an EIGHTH point of view to the Shattered Realms – Evan Strangward’s – and revisits five of the seven previously incurred. Add to this undertaking three very convoluted royal families, to say nothing of the assorted nobility and hangers-on. It boggles the mind that anyone could keep up with it – and yet I never found myself confused about anything. The characters are all so distinct, so fully formed, they leap from the page as real people. The careful reader will be amply rewarded for paying attention in this series.

What’s most impressive is that in juggling so many characters and stories, none are lesser than the others. Every time the POV switched, I experienced a mix of sadness for leaving one character, but excitement at revisiting another. And the beauty is that in this book, the characters finally start meeting up and interacting in the most delightful of ways. We’ve done the legwork in establishing and getting to know the characters, now we get to have fun by throwing them all in a room together. I kept squirming with excitement at every new combination!

It’s not all exciting congregations of characters; there are also plenty of smaller moments that reveal so much about the characters. For example, at one point in this book Ash is planning a mission he knows his mother won’t be a fan of. He decides to go with the “forgiveness, not permission” route and keep her in the dark. This is a very striking contrast to when his sister was in the same situation in Shadowcaster – Lyss insisted she get her mother’s blessing. This little thing speaks volumes about the siblings, showcasing how one is considerate and the other selfish.

There are so many characters to love, I could sing their praises one by one. Evan Strangward is just so compelling to read about. Destin Karn grows more awesome with every appearance. Queen Marina (one of the coolest side characters in Flamecaster) gets more time in the spotlight, and does not disappoint. And little Harper Matelon is a force to be reckoned with! Whereas the secondary villains – Granger, Bosley – grow more reprehensible with every page.

Cinda has always written swoon-worthy romances, and Stormcaster is no exception. There is a new OTP in town, and they are adorable together and romantic as hell. They also happen to be two guys. We need more homosexual relationships in fantasy books, and this sure as hell delivers.

Cinda excels at writing conflicts that are not just one side versus another. Rather, everyone here has their own agenda and their own conflicts, leading to a wealth of material in double-crosses and uneasy alliances. You wish they could all just get along and hug it out, but the story is just so compelling this way.

And lastly, Cinda is ruthless about tugging on heartstrings. Of course, we knew that from Flamecaster. And sure enough, a conversation between Raisa and Ash had me bawling, as expected. But longtime fans can never be prepared for the volley of gut punches that is Chapter 43. That one chapter is a bigger emotional roller coaster than almost any book I’ve ever read.

I may have just written a lot about the older generation in the Shattered Realms, but that was a small part in this story. I continue being impressed that Cinda does not use the characters of Seven Realms as a crutch in this series, but makes us fall in love with and care about brand-new characters. It’d be a lesson well worth learning for other writers who attempt a Next Gen story.

It’s surely getting a bit redundant for me to sing Cinda’s praises every year, but here we are. Reading Stormcaster – “It was worth it.”

Review:

Characters: I honestly don't know how to write this section because there are just so many characters that this installment focuses on. I mean, I went into this book expecting it to feel like the other installments, a change in focus, this one on Evan Strangward, his story, and what's going on in Carthis, which we sort of get, while possibly getting a few chapters here and there continuing the previous installment and showing what happened to Alyssa after the end of Shadowcaster, which we also sort of get. However, instead, this installment really felt like the first time this series has come into focus as a new generation of heroes banding together to take down a new foe. While I enjoy the first two installments in this series I really fell in love with this series here, this was the first time that I could truly see the focus of this series, which is mostly the amazing and complex characters that fill this amazing world, and while the story might have been spread a bit thin due to how may POVs there are, but honestly I wouldn't have it any other way it really illustrates the scope of this world and this story.

Romances: So, I'm not going to lie to you, there's very little romance in this book, with the romances from the previous books split up for the entire installment we don't get that much development on that front, other than off-handed references and some not so off-handed references here and there, but no real development for the couple. We do have a new POV in this book in the form of Evan Strangward, who is the focus of most of the beginning of this book, and that long beginning does detail a romance that he has, and while it is an adorable romance that I ship to no end, it's not in the book much beyond the beginning and while I understand why that is, as they each have different parts to play in this story, I just wish we could have seen more of them together in this book.

World Building: As I said before, this book was series changing for me, I would say it's mostly because it actually continues the story we know. While the previous installment did continue the story from Flamecaster a bit, Shadowcaster felt more like a companion novel, telling a concurrent story from a different front. This installment, well this installment feels like a mix of those two plotlines with a dash of Carthis and I love it. While there are so many Points of View that sometimes the plotlines can feel a bit spread thin at times, I never felt a lull in the story. I was hooked from the very beginning that the only times I would set this story aside were to make sure I didn't burn through it too fast, which in a way I kind of did as I'm anxiously awaiting the final installment in this series. This book expands the scope of this story so much and finally introduces us to Carthis, the Empire across the sea where a great many mythical creatures are assumed to live, including dragons. It was hard not to be struck with what exploring this world, even more, would be like, I mean, I would be completely down for a series set in this world that takes place completely, or almost completely, in Carthis because I feel there's still so much left to learn and I'm not sure how much will be able to come out in the final installment in this series.

Predictability: So, I'm not sure how to talk about the predictablilty in this installment as, while there are a good number of unpredictable and surprising moments in this installment, I still feel no closer to the answer to two of the biggest mysteries in this series, the first being the origin of those with mage marks, and while it seems that we get some explanation on that, I don't trust the source it comes from, and secondly, who is targeting the royal family, which again I would say we get "closer" to figuring out who it is, but since I'm pretty sure I figured out who it is near the beginning of the previous installment I was kind of hoping that that reveal wouldn't be drawn out. Again, I will say that there are a lot of amazing unpredictable moments in this installment but I felt they all happened at the moment and I didn't really feel a large build-up to anything unexpected.

Ending: So, since there are a few plotlines this book follows there are quite a few final climactic moments and I'll be honest with you, they're all full of tension, including something I thought would never happen in this series, and a particularly bad ass moment by one of my new favorite characters, even if they didn't need to be put in a situation where that badassery was necessary. Anyway, each of these moments is fraught with tension leading to some of the most intense moments in this series. It all leads up to some rather moments where we learn more about not only what just happened, but what will happen as this series heads into its final installment and it ends with one hell of a cliffhanger.

Rating:

Okay, look, I loved this book, it was nearly impossible to put down and I practically flew through the story. I am so sad that I have to wait for the next installment, and I just pray that it'll be worth the wait!

"The end of this story isn't written yet, the journey through it is important"

I just finished this book like five minutes ago (and spend the last five minutes screaming "WHAT!!! WHAT!!! You're not allowed to end a book like that!!!"), so I'm going to try to write a coherent review.

Beware: This will probably be very spoilery, so if you haven't read the book yet and are not interested in being spoiled, read at your own risk.

Okay, so in the beginning with Evan and Destin, I thought it was going to be similar to the other two books in the series, where it focuses on one of the people with the magemark and we get to know their story. Obviously, it didn't turn out that way. But I'm not complaining because WE FINALLY GET TO SEE ASH AGAIN!!!

I'm really torn about Destin's character, because in the first books, he didn't seem like a very goo guy. But now that we're starting to get to know him and who he is, I'm starting to like him. However, he's a freaking genius. When he dropped the amulet down Evan's shirt so that the other people couldn't have it. Oh My God. I love it.

Now for the moment we've all been waiting for since the beginning of the first book in this series......... THE REUNIONS!

Not going to lie, I cried a lot when Ash came back to the palace. Too many feelings. AND THEN they went to the graves and I freaking lost it. There were a whole lot of tears there.

I'm just going to put it out there... I'm not the biggest fan of Jenna. She's an okay character, but I just don't connect with her at all, and I feel like the only reason I liked her in Flamecaster was because I was super distracted by how much I freaking love Ash. So, needless to say, I wasn't too happy when she showed up again. I am hopeful though, that her story line gets a little bit more interesting in the next book.

Hal's back in this book, and I was so excited to see him again. He's such a lovable character. I loved seeing him with his family and working together with Destin.

So. The parts with Celestine and Lyss. I'm not going to say they were the most interesting parts of the book, but I know that they're going to be important and something big is going to happen (I'm thinking Lyss somehow turning the bloodsworn on Celestine, but we'll see how that plays out).

Getting close to the ending, the part with Raisa almost dying. Well... I guess she technically did die, right? Then she just got brought back. I'm both excited and incredibly scared to see where the plot goes with this, as we already know that it caused major complications (aka Raisa losing the line). Of course Han had to be there, and I swear to every god that I do and don't believe in that I am going to lose my shit if they end up talking to Han and he shows up in the next book.

Anywho... I hope this made at least a little bit of sense. I'm really excited to see where the wonderful Cinda Chima goes with this. After this book, there's no questioning why she's my favorite author.

PS Cinda, if you read this (even though I know you probably won't), I love Ash so much, just thought you should know that.

3.5 Stars sadly

Once again, this book kind of made me want to fall asleep for most of it. It wasn't that it wasn't well done, but WOW the politics and talk about war just wasn't it for me. The main characters introduced in book one, two and three, are all separated in different regions and we follow them while also learning a bunch of tactical information on what is to come, but there is no action to really progress that forward (I assume that's for the fourth and final book of course).

I really enjoyed the first 15% of the book, and the last 10%, but everything in the middle kind of made me slow down. My mood to read has been low lately and this didn't really help. There were some parts that really made me want to continue, but for most of it I was bored!! I couldn't help it.

I love Evan though and look forward to seeing more of him. Also I just want the two adult characters from series one to get together because it's about damn time! And it would just be so damn sweet UGH! Oh, and if Crow shows up in the last book I may actually cry because, I love that damn character and I know he's in there somewhere!! If not him than I'll take the person who died in book one please and thank you because I miss him too :'(

In order to continue with the Shattered Realms series you need to read the Seven Realm series first.

2.5/5
I had a lot of problems with this book and truth is, I almost gave up on the series.

I started reading The Seven Realm series last year and they were one of my favorite YA fantasy series. I cared for most of the characters and the story had so many good moments, I was just in love with it, you see? So, I was expecting certain things from The Shattered Realms series too. The first two books were good, I mean, they weren’t my favorite, but they were entertaining enough and the set up for the third one had me expecting answers and more action scenes.

Unfortunately, with this third book, I had a terrible experience. First half of the book was OK, a rough 4/5 for me. We get to meet Destin and Evan’s past and it was fairly entertaining. The fantasy elements were there and they’re presumably a queer couple (which I’m always grateful for), but the fact is that this book felt like it was all over the place.

We have a huge amount of POVs that just read the same. Most of the time I was like who are you? I don’t remember you because their personalities just seemed the same to me. I even had to look up to CWC’s website to know who was who because I was totally lost.

Also, I don’t mind reading about politics in fantasy worlds (I mean, I read A song of Ice and Fire and it’s all politics), but the way the author put it in this book was just boring. The war makes no sense and after +20 years one would expect that things have changed a little. On top of that, the “villain” is just a pirate girl that doesn’t have the personality to be a counterpart of anybody.

If I’m being honest, most of this book could have been edited away and it would have not changed the result. I cannot believe this was written by the same author whose storytelling I came to love. I will finish the series, though, because I have to know how things end, but I’m disappointed. This third book was just a waste of time and it kind of make me feel like The Shattered Realms series should have not existed at all.

Stormcaster is the third book in the Shattered Realms series, which happens a generation after the events in the Seven Realms series. Both series are in contention for my all time favorite fantasy series, and I can’t figure out why they don’t get more buzz. Somehow Chima just gets better and better with each book. For those uninitiated to the greatness of the Seven Realms, I would not recommend jumping in with this book because you will be very confused. I would say start at the very beginning with The Demon King (Seven Realms Book 1), but you could also start with Flamecaster (Shattered Realms Book 1) and be OK.

Stormcaster gives readers the origin story of Evan Strangward, a character who has made appearances in the previous two books. An orphan turned pirate, Evan does not understand where his powers to control the elements come from, but he has figured out how to use them to his advantage. He knows the Empress Celestine would like nothing better than to take control of him and use his abilities to help her conquer the realms. Evan knows he can’t stop her on his own.

The plot of the series is complex and would be hard to summarize without including spoilers for earlier books, so I’m going to focus on the reasons why this series stands out for me as truly great high fantasy.

The world building - The sprawling world of the Seven Realms feels fully fleshed out and lived in.
The characters - There are a lot of characters, and Chima manages to make them all three-dimensional people with their own unique personalities, motivations, and back stories.
Political intrigue - Political maneuvering and machinations abound. It’s kind of like Game of Thrones with less sex and violence.
Humor - There is a LOT of drama in this books, but Chima manages to sprinkle in some needed comic relief.
Feminism - The ladies are getting stuff done in these books. The Fells are a queendom ruled by the line of the Grey Wolf Queens. The princess heir is a captain in the army. The main villain - Empress Celestine - is a woman.

I could go on and on. Any teen or adult who enjoys high fantasy should be reading these books. The only problem...I need the next book NOW and I can’t even find a pub date.

Minor spoilers ahead.

4.5 stars. This series really does get better. Well, I got half of my wish to come true. Ash and Raisa reunited finally. I can’t lie, I cried. Just like I knew I would. God, I just miss Han so much. Honestly, I still can’t seem to connect to any of the new characters as much as I do the old characters from Seven Realms. However, I did get pretty attached to Destin and Evan this time around. Their story in the beginning is just so damn sad, and now they’re trying to find their way back to each other! Oh, my heart. I know this review is all over the place, but I’m just gonna keep rambling about everything.

Chima is a master at weaving multiple storylines, and slowly bringing them together. You go into this book with all of the main players scattered, new players introduced, and you’re wondering how the hell shes going to have them unite and make sense of all of this. But she does, and it is amazing. She is the queen of political intrigue. Seriously, there is barely any action in this book, but it kept me on the edge of my seat. I never knew what was going to happen next, and tensions were rising. Sometimes, the jumping from character to character was a bit jarring. I never knew who I was going to be with next, and it would take me out of the story while I worked it out.

I’m not sure this is ever going to top Seven Realms for me, but I love it in its own way and I’m going to keep reading. I think shit is about to get real.

This switches up perspectives yet again to Destin Karn (what a name!) and the stormmage Evan.
This sees them forming an alliance to sail the high seas.

He wanted to tell Evan Strang-ward that the last thing he should do is trust Destin Karn.
It will get you killed, Pirate. It will break your heart.

This had the sweetest LGBTQ relationship, with both unsure and tentative of their feelings. This is emphasised by their lack of experience and young age. This is always refreshing to see, as it isn’t always seasoned young adults who suddenly have to uncover their identity, normally it occurs when we are much younger and unsure.

”Killing is always personal, Evan said, looking the handsome soldier in the eye. "It's the second-most-intimate thing that can happen between two people."

Then, we jump a few years ahead and all of our characters from previous books start to reappear and interacting with each other. Most importantly, Adrian, the lost Prince, returns home.

More is revealed about Empress Celestine’s interest in the Mage marked, speaking of a wider, bloodier, and more brutal war.

”You carry Nazari blood- -the heartsblood of the empire. You have a magical heritage that goes back centuries.”

One gripe with this series - I dislike that it feels like every character has to be paired up romantically. Surprisingly, not everyone is immediately drawn to their sworn enemy.
