I've enjoyed reading Nicki Edward's Australian rural/medical romances - and I enjoyed her One More Song, though with some mixed feelings.
On reflection, though I enjoyed very many elements in the book, I felt as if it was trying too do much. The story is mostly set in picturesque rural town in north-east Victoria near Beechworth - and it picks up themes of bushfires, drought, floods, charity concerts, motor neurone disease, caring for aging loved ones, as well as absent and or distant fathers. Harry - a talented singer in musical theatre - is handsome and caring and very likeable, while Eddie (Edwina), a nurse in the local hospital, is strong, passionate, loyal and fierce. There is obvious chemistry between the two, though they need to work through their various commitments to family and how to 'marry' Harry's (potentially international) career with Eddie's strong ties to her grandparents, nursing and local community.
For me, I found the love arc a little messy as both Harry and Eddie come into the story with current relationships (Harry a friend with benefits, Eddie a long distant relationship with a narcissistic man) and the pace itself was rather stop, start and then, all of a sudden, resolved. Still, I loved the characters, the lovingly reproduced rural setting, as well as the ambience of the musical theatre scene.
