Jimmy Liao (pen name: 幾米；autonym: Lao Fu-Bin, 廖福彬) born in Yilan County, Taiwan. in Fine Arts, with a major in Design. He had worked in advertising companies for 12 years. Now he works as an illustrator. Since 1998, Jimmy published several illustrated books with amazing originality and multi-faceted narratives. He had since set a fashion in creating and publishing illustrated books in local and international markets. Utilizing images as a refreshing form of literary language, Jimmy creates in his works poetic frames that emit charms and appeals. He has published seventeenth popular books so far, and they are translated into English, French, German, Greek, Japanese, Korean and so forth. Being the most popular illustrator author in Asia, creating lots of fantasy and touch hearts cross all generation, however, with low profile personality, he enjoys the family time more, lives a tranquil life and devotes most of his time to work. Immersing in his works is just like to go into Jimmy's inner world, his inviting stories reflect the reality of real life, more and more people are intoxicated by his vivid strokes and his magic realism narratives. Now in Asia, Jimmy becomes vogue of the time, beyond his stories, "Jimmy" is like a pop of a new life style.

This is a lovely book. The story between a man and his beloved fish friend. In my opinion, underneath there is a much deeper analogy between the life of this fish and the real world. This metaphorical book makes us think about the meaning of friendship, freedom and love (even though sometimes there are weird situations between the man and the fish). Also...... first book in Chinese, yay!

Um álbum lindíssimo, mais pelas aguarelas (belíssimas) que pelo texto (que, contudo, é bonito na sua simplicidade depurada).
É uma história que se percorre em 20 minutos. Não conhecia o autor, mas gostei muito. Aconselho vivamente a leitura, sobretudo para quem gosta de artes plásticas.

É um livro lindíssimo com uma lição de moral lindíssima. Dos poucos livros que conheço do artista este destaca-se por ser o único a aguarela. Os efeitos criados e pouco trabalhados nas páginas, com as suas cores lindíssimas passam uma mensagem magnífica de que ninguém deve ser prisioneiro! E que lá no fundo todos os somos. Delicioso. Um álbum que vale a pena ler a apreciar as belíssimas aguarelas.
Apesar de ter pouco texto, deixa-nos uma mensagem importante.

This book touched my heart and broadened my sense of imagination the way stories by 几米 always do.* It's a story about letting go, and happiness. Also selfishness and isolation. When I saw the final page, the soft yet intense watercolours of that sunrise over the ocean, I felt like my chest had expanded, or some tension had been released from me.

I was intrigued by the dedication, in which he mentions a doctor by name and nurses of ward 071. After some digging, I found an extra bit of context that lent the story a bit more meaning: it's about the author's time in hospital when he was diagnosed with blood cancer. The dream-like sequence of the man in the story swimming in the ocean with his beloved fish, only to find that he is trapped in a fish tank of his own, is actually how the author felt when his friends could not come too close when visiting him, as doctors feared contamination. They had to stand on the other side of a window, and he would wave at them, separated by glass. (Link here to the chapter from his book that explains this; mind you, though, it's in Chinese.)

Love that he created such art, melancholy yet uplifting, from the memory!

*I can read Chinese much more fluently than I can write in it, hence the review in English.

Gosto muit das ilustrações deste autor, mas confesso que as suas histórias ficam um bocadinho aquém das minhas expectativas... Mas a mensagem final, ainda que não seja clara como água, é a de que todos precisamos de ser libertados dos aquários (rotinas?) em que vivemos. Quando isso acontece, "flutuamos pelo céu"... não sei é por que é que é "como um peixe verde fluorescente"...!

This is one of the best of Jimmy's picture books. The story is amazing and even if you only end up with the Chinese version, the story tells itself through his amazing pictures. I just finished translating it from Chinese into English as I have done with other books by Jimmy for my family back home and I thinkt hey are going to love it just as much as others I have sent them including Turn Left Turn Right, The Moon Forgot, Subway and The big Blue Stone. Jimmy's books are amazing for anyone to read, no matter what age. I hope they are more available in English soon for more people to read them.

Que lindas ilustraciones y linda historia. Leí comentarios que les parecia una historia simple y a mi me removió el mundo.
Y es que las historias te llegan según tu grado de afinidad con tu vida, con lo que estas viviendo en el momento o con lo que viviste alguna vez.
Por eso les contaré una historia, he tenido mascotas durante de mi vida, no muchas pero si he tenido experiencias.
Actualmente tengo 3 perritas pero hace poco la perrita que es del pasaje estuvo en celo y se cruzo, mi mamá, mi hermana y yo le hemos agarrado cariño y no podíamos ser indiferentes a como la acosaban los perros, decidimos operarla de emergencia, por que además es una perrita vieja + de 10 años.
Ella al ser de la calle estaba acostumbrada a ser libre y no estar entre 4 paredes como la tuvimos que tener 1 semana (yo igual daba apoyo moral desde la distancia, pero fue mi idea operarla y adoptarla). La historia me marco por eso, yo queria ser dueña de una perrita que estaba acostumbrada a la libertad, que encontraba un castigo que la tuviéramos bajo 4 paredes.
Igual la historia aún esta en desarrollo y soy super protectora con los perros, pero me aliviana la carga y si ella es feliz libre, yo soy feliz.
La perrita pide entrar ahora a la casa a dormir sobre todo (le damos comida y agua obvio), la amo y eso que aún no convivimos juntas.
