Severino Di Giovanni. C'era una volta in America del sud

Rate this book
Puro tango-punk nero e ribelle.

While Bayer’s understanding of anarchism clearly differs from his subject’s, which leads to some unfortunate moments of haughty disdain, the story of Severino di Giovanni is undeniably captivating. The circumstances around him interest me for the same reason as accounts like Tellez’s book on Sabate and Parry’s on the Bonnot Gang: namely, the ways in which the actions of these individuals provoked pearl-clutching and condemnations from anarchists more concerned with appealing to the masses and using unripe circumstances to justify continued passivity, as well as the manner in which these insurrectionaries managed to sustain their practice of attack in clandestinity while hunted and besieged from both within and without the milieu. This text is up there for me with Arrigoni’s Freedom: My Dream for its portrait of a life lived both within and against this world. Recommended.

A great true crime story of the anarchist Severino Di Giovanni. He bombed banks, killed cops and inevitably was caught up at a printing press as he planned his next zine.

I originally found this book as a freshman in college and devoured this hero Di Giovanni. While I still admire his willingness to live his ideals, put into praxis what he believed, his relationship with a 14 year old girl complicates his hero status.

For several years, a charismatic man dressed entirely in black terrorized the established order of Buenos Aires with his suitcases packed with explosives. Remarkably, he put out a regular newspaper filled with his opinions at the same time, and even published fine editions of books by Reclus (with money from bank heists). The military officer appointed for his defense at trial felt compelled to make an eloquent apology on his behalf (he then had to flee the country). The exceptional story of Di Giovanni is one of the wildest episodes in anarchism's history.

In many ways, this is just another tale of early 20th century "anarcho-bandrity," which of course entails plenty of excitement and cheering. However, what was most striking to me is the animosity and fierce betrayal by other so-called anarchists, condemning other anarchists (and publicly naming names) for acts and ideas which they do not approve. Severino proved himself unrelenting, and lived as he would be fated to die, with a cry of "Long Live Anarchy!"

¿A quien debemos nuestras libertades?

If I rated purely from my on point of view it would get two stars. I'm simply not that interested in anarchist bombers and bank robbers from the beginning of the 20s century.

With that said it is well written and the author, while not an anarchist, takes quite a sympathetic view of his subject and the research done is solid. While di Giovanni wrote and published a lot of articles and papers there is not a lot of discussion around his ideas. Here it is quite obvious an anarchist historian could have done a better job because s/he would understand the different strands of thoughts in the movement and could have focused in on di Giovanni's central ideas. An anarchist historian would probably also have done a better job of painting a wider and more detailed picture of the anarchist movement in Argentina. As it is now it is a book centered around the person di Giovanni and about the heists and killings, the hiding, his family life and love affair, the debate about the pros and cons of his actions within the anarchist movement and his capture and death.
